Green Pastures by Brigitte Granton

This painting depicts one of my favourite views in King Township and it has inspired me to paint it in all the seasons. Driving west along the Lloydtown Aurora Sideroad it is visible from the hill west of Dufferin and it represents everthing I love about King – its wide open spaces, farmland, rolling hills and views that go on for miles.

King City parking & village core improvement campaign Did you know that parking is permitted on King Road? KCBCA King City Business and Community Association (KCBCA) founded in December 2011, is a Group of business owners and residents in King City. The KCBCA hosts and participates in a variety of community initiatives and events e.g. the Annual Christmas in King City Event and the King City Street Festival. Through such events and future plans, the KCBCA hopes to foster a sense of community pride and encourage local business patronage. The KCBCA also strives to improve the curb appeal, making King City a more beautiful place for everyone to live, work, shop and play. OBJECTIVES • Inform businesses and citizens about free three-hour off-peak time on-street parking on King Road and Keele Street. • Create more visible parking signs. • Replace current signs on posts with larger signs coloured green with permitted times. These can be posted on hydro meters or lanterns or bicycle racks. Install two large green signs to be posted on the King Road & Keele Street at the “four corners” and near the King Township Municipal Office.
• On-street parking stall markings or white painted curbs. • Encourage York Regional Police to control speed limits on King Road. • Encourage the Township to repair sidewalks with the objectives of achieving improved accessibility, safety and improved snow removal. • Replace garbage drums with attractive bins. • Install benches throughout the village core. • Display flower pots throughout the core update the façade of business fronts. WHY • On-street parking will only occur if patrons and residents are made aware of it and feel comfortable to park. If we want to create a main street village core atmosphere we need to make parking and exploring the Town pedestrian friendly and safe. Currently, it is a thoroughfare of fast commuters and large trucks driving through to the 400 Highway. • Sidewalk maintenance will reduce the risk of falling. • We need to take ownership of our village not unlike what other municipalities are doing to create a sense of pride in their community. The businesses need it
and so do our current and future customers. Already we have observed how parking on King Road has slowed down traffic. We have also received considerable positive feedback. Commuters need to adhere to the 50 km zone limit and not travel at the average speed of 80 km zone. • More visible signage will clearly inform commuters that parking is permitted. When we have a parking symbol marked in red with a cross through it, it doesn’t stand out as parking being permitted. HOW The KCBCA has initiated a campaign to gather support from businesses and residents with the goal of encouraging off-peak hours on-street parking and increased Police enforcement of vehicles speeding on King Rd. The KCBCA will work collaboratively with the King Township and York Region on this campaign to achieve our objectives of a vibrant, prosperous, livable and walkable place! Yours truly, Anna Raeli, President KCBCA www.kingcitybusiness.caw

Brigitte Granton Artist
“ Inspiration is everywhere. The countryside of Canada never disappoints!”
rigitte Granton’s passion for painting landscapes in acrylic and oil paint comes from her love of nature and education in the biological sciences. As a King City resident for much of her life, she is drawn to the rolling hills, farms and green spaces of King Township as well as the rugged landscapes of Parry Sound. While working in medical research and forensics, art was always a part of her life, and after raising a family, she was able to focus on painting full time. Over the years, Brigitte has taken numerous courses and workshops in oil and acrylic painting from various prominent artists and as a child she would paint alongside her artist/chef father. In addition to painting in oils and acrylics, Brigitte has many years of experience in creating pen and ink botanicals. She is an illustrator for the North American Native Plant Society (NANPS), drawing native plants for their quarterly publication The Blazing Star and native plant fact sheets. Brigitte has participated and won awards in juried art shows and her works are currently displayed in the Patrick House Art Studio and Gallery and hang in private collections and in corporations in Canada.

he village of Schomberg was settled in 1830 and was initially known as Brownsville after the first landowners. By 1860 the village had prospered, becoming the centre of local commerce boasting banks and a mill, taverns and churches. At the turn of the century, the Aurora/Schomberg railway came to town, and a private residence was converted into a railway station. With the advent of better roads and cars, the railway closed in 1927 and the house reverted to being a private home. In the centre of Schomberg is the Dufferin Marsh, a wetland that provides for a variety of plant communities, which support resident and migratory birds and animals. Within the Marsh are places to sit and enjoy the wonderful environment. There are also several greenspaces with playground facilities and equipment for smaller children and caregivers.
There are many walking paths within the community. At the southwest corner of Schomberg the trail can be taken through local countryside, from which you can see the rolling hills of King and Caledon, and which connects to the Oak Ridges Trail. A new venture within the Village is the Schomberg Community Farm. It is designed to provide a hands-on opportunity to experience and appreciate the link between what we grow and what we eat, while learning about gardening skills, ecology, land-to-table issues, and sustainability. Schomberg is a community with activities that engage families, seniors and youth. The spirit of participation is seen in our sports groups, our business community, the variety of recreational activities, and especially in the volunteer opportunities. Schomberg warmly welcomes all residents to have fun and be involved. KL Courtesy of the Schomberg Village Association

ort Soirée is nestled in the small village of Schomberg on Main Street. As we walked down Main Street on a sunny afternoon, we came across Port Soirée and decided to stop in for lunch. We were greeted by the owner Alvaro who was friendly and immediately helped us to our seats. Port Soirée has a very cozy ambiance and is decorated with the works created by local artists. These paintings and photographs are a pleasure to admire while enjoying
your meal and, additionally, are available for purchase. Both my colleague and I ordered salads to start and fish for our mains. The quantity and quality of our food was exceptionally good. The wine selection is diverse. From the moment we entered to the moment we left, our experience was great. If you are in the Schomberg area, be sure to stop in for a great meal at Port Soirée.

Promoting peer engagement through afterschool programs Whether a child excels at athletics, academics, is a musician, or an artist, finding the right enrichment program does not have to be a daunting task. Bricks 4 Kidz helps to boost self-esteem in children with an award-winning curriculum that boasts both learning through creative play and playing to learn with LEGO Bricks. “Engaging with their peers in afterschool classes, students collaborate outside of their structured class, allowing for a broader scope of retention and participation,” says Dan O’Donnell, COO of Creative Learning Corporation, the franchise developer of Bricks 4 Kidz. Integrating these condensed classes into busy back-to-school schedules should be a priority for parents looking for project-based programs designed to improve social interaction, in-classroom engagement and academic performance.
