Located in the beautiful Oakville neighbourhood of Morrison, amongst the most desirable mature landscapes, this home was an older build in this affluent neighbourhood. The clients desire to maintain most of the charm and character of this older home was the inspiration for the transitional and eclectic design by designers Diane Ernjakovic and Rachel Keach of Oakville design firm, One Three Design Inc.

The wall between the kitchen and family room was opened up and space was reallocated to create a larger laundry/mudroom off their garage entrance. The original family room was reminiscent of an English cottage with heavy wood beams and textured ceilings.
“To set a welcoming and relaxed vibe to the family room, we selected a bold, moody cabinet colour, a refreshing change from the classic white.”
The original wood-burning fireplace was heavy and overbearing with wallto-wall brick. A natural stone slab flanked with customized storage was brought in to cover up the out of date brick while preserving the desirable wood fireplace. Integrated firewood storage and a custom fireplace screen make their frequent use of this fire-
place easy. A small TV finds its home tucked off to the side allowing conversation, reading and entertaining to be the primary focus of the space. The layering of textures and metallics with the eclectic mix of furnishings and art brings life and playfulness into this casual, yet sophisticated, family room. →

In order to winterize the sunroom, new windows, insulation and heated floors were installed. The brick, French doors and fireplace were untouched to show off the original character of the home.
“It was important the space feel refined and elevated to tie into the adjacent interiors but also stay true to its casual purpose.” The predominant use of indoor furnishings such as the club chairs, tables and rug, keep this room from feeling like a year round storage shed for backyard furniture. Durable textiles, finishes and an outdoor sofa were selected to withstand the wet bathing suits and feet of little grandchildren running in from the family pool. A colourful mix of botanical art and greenery brings a lively outdoor feel to this all year round sunroom. The homeowners were thrilled with the final result and feel they now have a space that both they and their grandkids can enjoy. ■

We went back to our roots this year, celebrating more than a decade of generous contributions and impactful support for APJ,” said Natasha Koifman, Canadian Board Chair, US Board of Directors and Festival Gala Co-Host. “The sense of purpose and unity in the room this evening was really special. Over the past 11 years, we truly accomplished what we set out to do: we bought our land, we built the Academy for Peace and Justice, and we will continue to provide education to the people of Haiti.”
APJ co-founder Deborah Rennard and Natasha Koifman opened the gala, taking the stage to express gratitude for supporters and guests, many of whom had been involved with APJ for more than 11 years. The 2019 gala theme, as explained by Rennard, focused on going back to the roots of the organization and looking at all that has been accomplished. The Academy for Peace and Justice has graduated more than 1,000 students since its inaugural year.

The honour was presented to Diane and Michael with a heartwarming celebratory video created by their children, highlighting their unwavering support of Canadian philanthropic initiatives and charities around the world. The award was presented by Robbie Robertson and Janet Zuccarini, who spoke highly of the couple and attributed their relationship to an introduction made by Diane and Michael. This year’s Toronto gala also generously supported The KANPE Foundation. APJ’s mission is to encourage peace and social justice, working to alleviate poverty around the world. This simple yet impactful mission, has inspired many celebrities to join the organization, including Ben Stiller, Susan Sarandon, Olivia Wilde, Javier Bardem, Madeleine Stowe, Maxwell, Nicole Kidman, Pierce Brosnan, Jude Law, Penelope Cruz and many more. Trophy. This extraordinary challenge gives culinary enthusiasts the opportunity to fundraise in support of Epilepsy SCO for their way to a chance to cook alongside celebrity chefs in a chopped-style competition as seen on TV!
Recently, Smeg Canada hosted a cocktail party for those registering to be in the showdown. In attendance was the Showdown’s host, John O’Hurley who is known for his role as J. Peterman on the NBC sitcom Seinfeld, and former host of the Family Feud from 2006 to 2010. Celebrity Chefs Mary Berg, winner of Season 3 of CTV’s hit culinary series, MASTERCHEF CANADA and Massimo Capra, known for his appearances on CityLine, Restaurant Makeover, Chopped Canada and Top Chef Canada were also in attendanace. At the Showdown, guests will have the opportunity to take photos with the Celebrity Chefs, bid on silent and live auction items and mingle with other guests. In Canada, every QX50 comes with the new VC-Turbo engine, all-wheel-drive and, in my view, the best performing continuously variable transmission (CVT) on the market. The smooth, calm yet robust way that this small VC-Turbo engine can deliver power is extraordinary. It’s like having two engines. One is super-efficient and athletic (9.0 L/100 km combined city/highway) with high (14 to 1 ratio) compression and the other is raw power and muscle (280 lbs-ft of torque) with low (8 to 1 ratio) compression. And it can slide between these extremes depending on driver and driving requirements. “Best of both worlds” must be the Infiniti mantra. It also applies to the spacious interior of QX50, which is surprisingly practical despite its ritzy furnishings. The heated split folding and reclining rear seats are on a track that allows them to slide back and forth 14 cm (5 1/2 inches). This allows extra leg room or extra cargo space (880 litres expands to 1,048 litres) if needed, and cargo space increases to 1,699 litres with the rear seats folded.

Sure, the QX50 is a fun vehicle to drive on a twisty country road, particularly if you drop it into the sport mode and play with the transmission shift paddles. There are, however, other times when driving can be tedious and stressful, extended highway drives and congested traffic for example. That’s where Infiniti’s Pro Pilot Assist system can be a tension relieving asset. While not fully autonomous, it’s just a finger tip on the steering wheel away from it.
Fast and powerful yet easy on fuel, stylish outside and sumptuous inside yet profoundly functional, the all new Infiniti QX50 is complex, and an extremely appealing composite. BEST OF BOTH WORLDS - HIGH COMPRESSION
Tightly squeezing the air-fuel mixture inside an engine’s combustion chamber produces more power and better fuel economy. The VC-Turbo engine can also run in what’s known as an Atkinson Cycle mode in certain situations to provide even better fuel efficiency. I was particularly impressed by how quiet the passenger cabin was at highway speeds. What’s called an “active torque rod” under the hood is a clever new Infiniti weapon in the fight to dampen unwanted noises and vibrations. Cranking up the radio volume is the old way, and in QX50 that could be an awesome 16 speaker Bose audio system.
