FLOOD TO

FAB FR AHMINTERIORS.COM // PHOTOGR APHY: ROB HOLOWK A

Homeowners John and Alana along with their two boys moved into their South Oakville home in 2013 with the idea in mind that they would renovate in the future. As fate would have it, flooding from a broken pipe a few years later turned the idea into a reality.

LUXURYLISTED.CA

12

SPRING 2019

Instead of just fixing the area that was damaged, they decided to embrace their misfortune and do a complete renovation. This required the family to move out for about a year, which was a sacrifice they were willing to make. Deciding to seek help, they enlisted the services of Lisa Frahm, owner of Frahm Interiors, for the design and décor. The Scott Home Company was contracted soon after to obtain permits and complete the renovation. With the team in place, the planning and design could begin. The family wanted a new design that would suit their vision of a warm family home and also be a great place for entertaining. They desired a “wow” factor and the inclusion of bold colour. Lisa instantly grasped their needs and the vision was brought to life. The result was a beautiful family home that truly reflected the clients’ needs and lifestyle. →

KITCHEN

Since practicality in the kitchen was a must, Lisa designed the area to be perfect for a busy family. By removing the wall that separated the living room, an open concept kitchen was created. The custom cabinets were painted a light gray with white quartz countertops, while a darker gray top was chosen for the island to add contrast. The homeowner’s existing dining table was refinished and incorporated into the new

design, with polished chrome chairs that added a fun and unexpected element. Lisa picked simple barstools and had custom slipcovers made with a stain resistant fabric and added porcelain tile with a subtle stone texture for the floors. A white painted brick feature wall was installed with a custom black stained barn door in order to separate the kitchen from the mudroom.

HOME DÉCOR

MUDROOM

The existing mudroom had an unused staircase, which made it very difficult to maneuver. With a little bit of persuasion, Lisa convinced the clients to remove the staircase and relocate the washer/dryer to the second floor, which improved the space immensely. It’s now far more functional for the needs of the family with a large bench and plenty of storage. →

HOME DÉCOR

“My goal when working on any design project is not to simply fulfill my clients’ wish list, but to exceed their expectations.”

LIVING ROOM

The large black stained posts not only create drama and a subtle separation between two seating areas, but they cleverly disguise HVAC and structural supports. The homeowners wanted to keep the existing wood burning fireplace, so it was clad with black granite and white quartz to freshen it up. The clients’ existing 9’ sofas were in good condition, so Lisa incorporated them into the new design and selected a complimentary coffee table made from rustic wood to withstand daily use. Fun blue and yellow accents were then added for a punch of colour.

DINING ROOM

A coffered ceiling detail was designed to highlight the space and to add a classic touch along with simple wall trim. Lisa then decided to redo the fireplace mantle in a clean and classic style. The 10-foot walnut table was custom made to fit the generous space and allow for large dinner parties with the client’s family and friends. Luxurious blue velvet chairs were selected to add drama and complement the living and sitting room accents. →

SPRING 2019

LAUNDRY ROOM/LOFT

Working with an awkward and seldom used space located over the garage, Lisa redesigned the space to fulfill Alan’s desire for a personal oasis. The multi-purpose room now functions as a laundry room, yoga studio, TV lounge and office for the busy mom and wife. Pretty pastels and patterns were chosen to add a feminine touch and show off Alana’s style.

18

SPRING 2019

MAIN FLOOR OFFICE

Located next to the main entrance was John’s office, which was kept clean and simple with a modern desk and credenza. Alana had a painting commissioned, which incorporated an image of John and his business travels, so Lisa decided to make that the main focal point on the wall. Floating shelves on the opposite wall provide additional space for personalization.

The family is enjoying their newly redesigned home, now that it reflects their personal taste and lifestyle. This project was the perfect example of how an unfortunate incident can be turned into a wonderful opportunity. ■

COCO BY JASON STACEY // MAKINGCOCO.COM

Simply put, Grant Fuhr is hockey royalty.

The Hall of Fame netminder, best known for backstopping the high-flying Edmonton Oilers dynasty of the 80’s, Grant always found a way to make the key saves when his team needed it the most, and the championships prove it. Making Coco: The Grant Fuhr Story captures the life and times of the kid from Spruce Grove, Alberta who first strapped on the pads because “they looked cool” and then went on to become one of the games greatest goalies of all-time. A successful career in the NHL is dependant on many things; good coaching, work ethic, the right teammates and most importantly, a willingness to do whatever it takes to win. Hall of Fame Goaltender, Grant Fuhr, who was named one of the ‘100 Greatest NHL Players’ in history, had one objective during his storied 19 year career - win.

SPRING 2019

“I enjoyed putting the stuff on everyday,” says Grant. “I enjoyed winning more than anything.” In 1979, at the age of seventeen, Fuhr joined the Victoria Cougars of the WHL. After two stellar seasons in Victoria, which included the league championship and a trip to the Memorial Cup in 1981, Fuhr was set to realize his lifelong dream of being drafted into the NHL. Rumoured to be chosen in the first round, the junior netminder was watched by a bevy of scouts and coaches each and every game. During the Memorial Cup, then coach of the Edmonton Oilers, Glen Sather, attended a game to watch the prospect.

Above: Glen Sather, former coach of the Edmonton Oilers.

“He wasn’t very good.” remarked Grants future coach. “He let in 8 goals and I told our Scout that I wasn’t going to draft him.” After a bit of arguing back and forth, and a lot of convincing, the Edmonton Oilers drafted him eighth overall. When training camp opened, it wasn’t long before his teammates knew there was something about their new goalie. “His first day in practice, we knew that this kid was different,” said Wayne Gretzky. “we could see that he was special.” After a few years of up and down play, during which he won a record 23 straight games in his rookie year plus a 10 game demotion to the farm team in New Brunswick after calling Oilers fans jerks, Grant Fuhr became the starting goalie for the high-flying Oilers. Their free-wheeling playing style made them a juggernaut on offence but left their goalies exposed. “He was the perfect goalie and temperament for us,” remarks former teammate and fellow Hall of Famer, Mark Messier. “Grant wasn’t worried about statistics, didn’t care about goals against, didn’t care about anything other than winning.” →

Making Coco: The Grant Fuhr Story goes behind the mask of the Edmonton Oilers’ five-time Stanley Cup winning netminder. Through the eyes of teammates, rivals, and #31 himself the film explores the championship success, the controversy, and the redemption that made Grant “Coco” Fuhr a legend on, and off the ice.

Grant loved the philosophy. “I knew I was going to get a three or four goal cushion to work with on most nights,” he explains. “I could make a mistake here or there and could get away with it. My job was to just keep it one or less.” The Spruce Grove native not only backstopped the Oilers to four Stanley Cup Championships in five years but was widely recognized as being the best net minder in the business for some time, despite having just one Vezina Trophy to his credit. His presence in goal during multiple international events spoke volumes, as did his innate ability to raise his level of play whenever his team needed it most…especially come playoff time.

“The timing of his saves was absolutely spectacular. No matter how he played in the first two periods, he had the ability to make the big save when it counted the most.”

In Making Coco, the documentary delves into the details of the goaltender’s drug use and subsequent suspension by the National Hockey League. He admitted to using in the past, but that he’d sought help and moved on. Following an investigation by the NHL, and then president John Ziegler, Fuhr was initially suspended for the entire 1990-91 season, but reinstated after missing 59 games. Fuhr felt the league, which didn’t have a drug policy at the time, was out to make an example of him. “They weren’t sure what to do,” he says in the documentary. “I think they determined, ‘OK, well we’re here to punish, we’re not here to help anybody’. So they decided before I ever got to Toronto [for the hearing].”

“HOCKEY IS THE GREATEST SPORT ON EARTH AND THE BIGGEST THING I’VE TAKEN FROM IT IS THAT

After 10 seasons with the Oilers and five Stanley Cups, Grant was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs just prior to the start of the 1991 season. After a brief stint in Toronto he moved on to Buffalo and Los Angeles before landing in St. Louis in 1995. Thought to be past his prime, Fuhr had a resurgence that year and turned the Blues into a contender after playing an NHL record 79 of 82 regular season games. “He was on a mission,” remarks former Blues teammate Al MacInnis. “He had one of the most amazing years of any goalie I had ever seen. If he didn’t get hurt against Toronto in the first round, we would have won the Stanley Cup that year.” Injuries took its toll on the netminder and after brief stint in Calgary, he called it a career in 2000. Grant Fuhr holds or shares five goaltending records, including most consecutive appear-

THERE ARE SO MANY GOOD PEOPLE IN THE GAME.” ances by a goaltender in a single season with 76 in 1996, and most wins in a single postseason by a goaltender with 16 in 1988. In 2003 he was the first black player to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame and his number 31 was retired by the Oilers the same year. Retired and enjoying life as the Director of Desert Dunes Golf in Desert Hot Springs, California, Grant has had plenty of time to reflect on his career and the friendships he made.

THE AGO PRESENTS: IMPRESSIONISM IN THE AGE OF INDUSTRY AGO.CA

Pulsing with life, Paris in the 1870s was transforming – thanks to wider streets, increased traffic, an explosion of factories in the suburbs and faster, more frequent steampowered trains. No one in France was immune to the rapid pace of change, least of all artists. Impressionism in the Age of Industry: Monet, Pissarro and more explores how French Impressionist artists and their contemporaries, famous for their lush landscapes and sea vistas, were equally obsessed with capturing the spirit of the industrial age. The groundbreaking exhibition features over 120 artworks, including paintings, photographs, prints, drawings, sculptures and period films. History was made and a long-anticipated dream realized in Mojave, CA, as Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo, VSS Unity, landed from her maiden spaceflight to cheers from Richard Branson and the teams from Virgin Galactic and The Spaceship Company.

This accomplishment has been recognized by the NASA Flight Opportunities Program, which flew four space science and technology experiments on VSS Unity, making this Virgin Galactic’s first revenue generating flight. ■

THE SPECTACULAR 88.22-CARAT

OVAL DIAMOND rized by kings and queens for centuries and across civilisations, coveted by tycoons and moguls of the 20th century, exceptional large diamonds have become the ultimate collectibles for modern day connoisseurs. This spring, a spectacular 88.22-carat, D Colour, Flawless, Type IIa, oval brilliant diamond, perfect according to every critical criterion, will lead Sotheby’s Hong Kong Sale of Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite on 2 April 2019 (est. HK$88 - 100 million / US$11.2 - 12.7 million). This is one of only three oval diamonds of over 50 carats to appear at auction in living memory, and the largest to be auctioned in over five years**. Patti Wong, Chairman of Sotheby’s Asia, said: “When you think that one ton of mined earth yields less than a carat of diamond, and that high quality diamonds over 10 carats are a rarity, the discovery of a 242-carat rough, of gem quality and exceptional size, is nothing short of a miracle. The perfect 88.22-carat diamond is a summary of everything: a wonder of nature, a masterpiece resulting from man’s ability to shape the hardest material on earth into an object of ultimate beauty and the most concentrated form of wealth, as stated by Pliny the Elder almost 2000 years ago. Sotheby’s Hong Kong has had the privilege to bring to the market some of the most important colourless diamonds in the past decade and we look forward to presenting this treasure to the world. ” SOTHEBYS.COM

Natasha Koifman is a public relations superstar. Ask any of her clients. Natasha created NKPR in 2002 and under her guidance and leadership, the PR company has established itself as a highlyregarded full-service public relations, artist management and digital agency with offices in Toronto and New York, representing over 40 diverse national and international brands including Swarovski, TD, and Links of London. We sat down with the two-time Canada’s Most Powerful Women winner to discuss International Women’s Day, TIFF, and her passion for giving back.

SPRING 2019

Q: You’ve been running NKPR for over 16

years now. What inspired you to start your own PR company and what have you learned over that time? A: After working in New York for a number

of years as a Journalist and then moving back to Toronto to work for a communications agency, I realized that I really loved the industry, but I didn’t necessarily connect with every single client or project that came across my desk. When I decided to start my own company, the lesson I learned from my previous jobs was to really pick and choose who you work with and what you work on. Even though I didn’t necessarily know how to run a business at the time, what I did know was that I had these key values and principles that were important to me, based on everything I had learned in previous jobs. I knew that I wanted to make sure I was as transparent as possible with all of my clients, that I ran my business honestly and that my compass was integrity. When I started my company, those were the three things that I felt were the most important and acted almost as a checklist for all the different clients or businesses that I was working with. Q: What does it mean to work with NKPR?

How do you separate yourself from your competition?

Q: How has social media transformed the way

A : What really sets us apart from other

A: We took social media and we ran with it. We

agencies is that we are results driven. We are hyper-focused on getting results that are actually meaningful for our clients and their businesses. The reality is, that we have so many more tools in our toolbox today compared to 17 years ago when I started the company. Social media and the ever-evolving digital landscape have changed PR completely and ultimately changed how we do business. We work with our clients almost thinking backward. First asking the question, “what do you want PR to do for you?” Success is different for everyone, sometimes it’s about building a brand and sometimes it’s about sales. We find out those priorities from the beginning so that we can leverage the right tools to generate meaningful results for all of our clients.

NKPR does business?

are the only agency in Canada that is verified on both Instagram and Twitter (@NatashaNKPR). We embraced it and I think one of the biggest things to running a successful company is being open to all the changes that are happening in the world, whether it’s in your industry or not. When I look at social media and how it has transformed our business, the fact that we can do our own market research, through the database and following that we have built on various platforms, is incredible - it’s direct market research. Where in the past we could really only reach consumers through media, today, we can go directly to the consumer to share information and drive sales. It’s an exciting time for the industry as these tools continue to evolve and create new ways for us to achieve our clients’ results.

SPRING 2019

Q: Each year, NKPR hosts 26 Hours of Kind-

ness to raise awareness for Toronto’s homeless community during one of the coldest times of the year. Can you tell us more about this cause? A: From the beginning, giving back has always

been so important to me and one of the key pillars of my business. I started 26 Hours of Kindness several years ago during the holiday season when I saw a real need to support the community where we live and work. We are so fortunate to receive amazing gifts from our clients and partners each year and I wanted to be able to spread that love to those who really needed it the most. That’s how it started, from random acts to volunteering at local shelters the NKPR team spreads out across the city for 26 hours of giving back. Over the past couple years, we’ve moved the initiative to Valentine’s Day – one of the coldest days of the year in Canada. This year, we partnered with global organization →

#HashtagLunchbag to make over 600 sandwiches for shelters across the city. Our office transformed into KINDNESS HQ and we had over 80 volunteers from the neighbourhood come together to pack lunches for the community. For me, when I started 26 Hours, it was an extension of what we do from a philanthropic perspective. We were always doing so much abroad with Artists for Peace and Justice, it really made sense to look at how we could support our local community in a meaningful way. Q: TIFF is an important time of year for you.

Tell us a bit about what you love about TIFF and how it’s allowed you to make a difference to your clients and the charities you work with. A: One of the things I love about TIFF is how the

city really transforms into Hollywood North. I’m often in LA and New York for work and there’s always that buzz in those cities, but something happens to Toronto during the film festival where you can just feel the energy in the city. Since I started NKPR, it has always been an important time for us – for clients but also for causes that we believe in. I was in Los Angeles 11 years ago at a lunch and the topic of discussion was Haiti and how devastated the country is - It’s an hour and a half away from Miami, you have kids that are dying of malnutrition, families that are living on a dollar a day and we needed to do something. We were just two and a half months out from the film festival, so I suggested looking into doing a fundraising event. The timing couldn’t be better, with TIFF bringing in over 700 journalists and all the major celebrities and industry leaders, it was an opportunity to get global eyeballs on a meaningful cause. From there Artists for Peace and justice was created. Ben Stiller and Susan Sarandon are our chairs for the US, Yannick and Shantelle Bisson are on our board in Canada and here we are 10 and a half years later having raised over $32 million, of which a huge portion comes from the annual event during the Toronto film festival. I’m also excited to announce that we are also hosting our inaugural APJ gala in Montreal this year during Grand Prix.

Q: You are the chair of the Canadian Board

for Artists for Peace and Justice and sit on the US Advisory Board as well. Why is being part of this organization important to you? A: I often get asked why I support the charities

that I do, and the answer is because someone has to do it. We can’t just keep talking about it, we have to take action and do something. When I think back to the earthquake in Haiti, where we raised over $5 million to build the first free high school in Port-au-Prince, I look at that and think, if we didn’t do that, who would have? Everyone involved in Artists for Peace in Justice truly wants to make a real impact in that part of the world. We know that every single dollar that we raise goes directly back to our

LUXURYLISTED.CA

school, programming and the hospital that we support in Haiti. For me, this is so important because it allows us to make maximum impact in the community. Now, more than ever, we have to talk about giving back and we have to take action. A retweet or repost is great, but we need to do more. This goes back to one of the reasons we also started 26 Hours of Kindness, I wanted my team to understand the importance of philanthropy. When you spend the time creating a program like #HashtagLunchbag or when you’re physically dropping off those sandwiches to these shelters, you realize how important it actually is. I think it’s imperative that we understand the value of taking action and giving of yourself to others that need you.

SPOTLIGHT

“I often get asked why I support the charities that I do, and the answer is because someone has to do it. We can’t just keep talking about it, we have to take action and do something.” Q: Just over a year ago, you launched AN8,

an angel investment firm with your husband, Anthony Mantella. Can you tell us a little bit about the company and what your motivation was to start it? A : We decided to start this new company

because I was speaking with so many businesses through NKPR that weren’t really in the position to afford PR but had amazing business ideas and strong leadership. Anthony was already doing a multitude of investments, so we decided to pair up together to support the next generation of entrepreneurs. We wanted to use my agency and our financial resources to contribute to businesses that could really benefit in a meaningful way. Then I started to look at some of the stats out there where only 7.4% of angel investors are female and women-led businesses get only 4.2% of venture capital funding. We felt that this was an opportunity for us to pick and choose the companies that we were going to invest in, and it was something for us to be able to do together.

Q: International Women’s Day is on March

8th where we celebrate women’s achievements, raise awareness against bias and take action for equality. Can you tell us a bit about what this day means to you and what needs to happen next to achieve a balance in business and society?

A: International Women’s Day has always

been a big deal for me, even growing up. Every year, my father would always honour my mother on that day, and it stuck with me. I grew up in a household where there was an extreme amount of balance between my parents. They were partners and they worked together for the success and progress of our family. This year’s theme is “balance for better” and I think that’s so important because it is about both genders working together. It zeros in on the idea that women AND men have a part to play in opening doors and smashing through glass ceilings. You need both men and women at the table in order to actually achieve the progress we all strive for because you can’t have a one-way conversation, it has to be two ways.

Q: What is something that not many people

would know about you?

A: I’m an introvert. Most people think that

because I’m in a job that is so social and that requires me to be around a lot of people that I’m an extrovert, but that’s not the case. The only difference between the two is that I get my energy from quiet time, whereas extroverts get their energy from going out and being surrounded by people. We live in a world where there is this expectation that we have to go, go, go all the time, but quiet time is really important. You have to cherish the quiet because it’s actually when you recharge, certainly for an introvert.

Q: You’ve accomplished so much in your

career. What advice would you give to young women looking to make a difference in the world of business?

A: There are a few things. The first being,

have patience! Today, more than ever, because of social media and the rise of the instant gratification generation there is this expectation to be an overnight success. I often advise students and young women to take a breath and be patient with themselves. Have goals and work to achieve those goals, but they are not going to happen overnight. My second piece of advice is to be authentic. Authenticity is a word that is overused but often misunderstood. One exercise I’ve been doing for over 15 years is called the “The 5 I am’s.” I often do it once a year and what it does is help you really understand the five things that make you, you. They change every year for me, but the exercise will help you identify and determine who you are and what values are important to you. These are the values that should guide your decisions, both in your career and in life. ■

My RC came with a 3.5 litre normally aspirated V6 engine that can generate 311 horsepower and delivers power to all four wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission. A Lexus Drive Mode Select system lets you choose between Normal, Eco, Sport, Sport+ and Snow modes to match your mood and/or driving conditions. The Sport+ mode also allows a driver to customize a personal drive set-up. →

Low and sleek, the RC targets a younger, driving enthused buyer and it’s available in a wide range of models that will include (later this year) a race-track-ready (472-horsepower) limited edition RC F. “Wow! That’s a good looking sports car,” was my initial reaction and it was followed by another “Wow!” soon after settling-in behind the wheel of the eminent white pearl RC 350 F Sport test car. A super comfortable bucket-style driver seat was nestled in a wrap-around cockpit that right away seemed to fit, like a high-quality glove.

In addition to triple LED headlights and better aerodynamics, the RC now has a slightly wider stance and a lower centre of gravity. Hidden upgrades include new (adaptable) shock absorbers that provide more damping force and stiffer suspension bushings. There’s also an active noise cancelation system and cabin noise is impressively low, for a sporty car, at highway cruising speeds. Push hard of the gas pedal, however, and the V6 lets out a raspy tailpipe growl at high rpm. In drive, the power surge is immediate and perfectly progressive. While this RC already

provides ample power and performance for most driving enthusiasts, the 5.0 litre V8 engine that powers RC F takes performance to supercar levels. An all-new 2020 MY version of the RC F will (for the first time) include a limited release Track Edition, for hard core driving enthusiasts. Although it will use the same normally aspirated 5.0-litre V8 that’s in the RC F, it’s lighter, faster and has more braking power. Combined with the new electronic launch control system, the RC F Track Edition will be capable of a 0-to-96 km/h (60 mph) time of less than 4.0 seconds.

In addition to carbon fibre body panels (including a massive tail spoiler), the Track Edition sheds weight in key areas, like its Brembo carbon ceramic brake rotors, and it has titanium muffler and tail pipes. Rarely used on production cars, titanium also gives the Track Edition a unique sound.

SIX CENTURIES OF INDIAN HISTORY

BROUGHT TO LIFE ROM.COM

Recently unveiling this rarely seen royal treasure, the Royal Ontario Museum lets you explore the spectacular royal arts of one of India’s greatest former kingdoms, Jodhpur, Rajasthan. Alluring jewellery, lavish tents and canopies, vibrant paintings, and opulent decorative arts tell stories of kingship, strategic alliances, the role of women and life at court. Amassed over the course of nearly four centuries, these treasures reflect the history and artistic legacy of the Rathore dynasty, one of the longest continuous royal lineages in the world, that ruled this desert kingdom until India’s independence in 1947.

Treasures of a Desert Kingdom features masterpieces drawn from the collection of the former royal family, most of which are on display outside their palace setting for the very first time. While the stunning objects highlight India’s multifaceted past, they reveal a lasting cosmopolitan culture that was sustained by a delicate balance between local and external influences, and tradition and modernity. The exhibition will transport visitors to the dazzling landscape of Jodhpur through engaging and interactive experiences. Visitors are able

FINANCE

INVESTMENT GOALS THE LONG & SHORT OF IT BY JEFF FINCH, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PL ANNER // 416 695 8600

nvestors dread volatile markets and, too often, their response is to jump out of investments when the market goes down and attempt to jump back in when it goes up. But it’s a historical fact that markets will always fluctuate and the price of any stock or equity mutual fund is bound to be somewhat volatile in the short-term. The one proven approach for taking away much of your investment risk is simply this: time in the market. Study after study has proven that time in the market delivers much better returns than trying to time the market. Here are some recent findings in support of a long-term investment strategy.

Although negative returns in the short-term are relatively frequent, the possibility of receiving a positive return greatly increases as the investment term lengthens. For example, between 1960 and 2015 staying invested in the market (S&P/TSX) for a year resulted in a positive return in 74.7% of the one-year periods, while staying invested for 15 years resulted in a positive return of 100% of the time.** In any one-year period, the returns of the S&P/TSX Composite Index have been as high as 86.9% and as low as -39.2%, a range of over 126%. However, when investors diversify their holdings and invest for the long term, this volatility decreases significantly. For example, a “moderate” portfolio invested for five years would have experienced a range of average annual returns from -5% to +28%, and if invested for 20 years, from +8% to +15% (S&P/TSX 1970-2015 – range of returns before taxes).*

Many of the strongest market returns occur in the periods immediately following sharp declines in equity markets. Since 1950, following the worst 12-month periods of performance on the S&P/TSX, the market has made solid gains just 12 months later with only one exception. And within five years, the markets were up significantly – meeting and exceeding long-term return expectations.*

So, as these findings once more prove: Staying invested ensures you are always capitalizing on the upside of the market and reducing the impact of short-term market volatility. Most importantly, the possibility of receiving positive returns greatly increases as your investment term lengthens. Of course, having a properly diversified portfolio with the right mix of investments that matches your tolerance for risk is also key to achieving your long-term investment goals. Your professional advisor can help you do that within the right overall financial plan for you. ■

History has shown that economic recoveries following recessions are typically both strong and durable. In fact, periods of expansion that came on the heels of downturns averaged 57 months, or close to five years. After 1960, the average period of expansion following a recession was even longer at 71 months, or close to six years.**
