PERFORMANCE

The McLaren Senna is the personification of McLaren’s DNA at its most extreme, creating the purest connection between car and driver. It is the most track-focused road car they have ever built, and it will set the fastest lap times of any McLaren to date. That is what has driven them to build a track car that is unashamedly without compromise. One that is legalised for road use, but not sanitised to suit it. Nothing else matters but to deliver the most intense driving experience around a circuit.

The McLaren Senna has a single-minded purpose. In the pursuit of the most rewarding and intuitive driving experience, pioneering active aerodynamics generate unprecedented levels of downforce. It is also the lightest vehicle they have built since the iconic F1, with their most powerful road car engine to date. This combination creates a staggering power-to-weight ratio of 668PS-per-tonne (659bhp). It is the most direct and responsive McLaren ever built, surpassing even the McLaren P1™ GTR, to create the purest connection with the driver. ■

Inspired by one of McLaren’s greatest racing drivers, the McLaren Senna is utterly dedicated to allowing the driver to be the best they can possibly be.

THE MCLAREN SENNA IS A NEW TRACK BENCHMARK FOR MCLAREN.

FEEL ANCERLSTUDIO.COM // PHOTOGR APHY: BR ANDON BARRÉ

Hoping to create an open, contemporary space, the residents of St. Germain home, located in Toronto’s Bedford Park, enlisted the help of Nicholas Ancerl of Ancerl Studios, and Architect, Daniel Karpinski to help them bring their vision into reality.

LUXURYLISTED.CA

SPRING/SUMMER 2019

From the start, both Ancerl and Karpinski knew they wanted to add an ‘old world feel’ to this modern-day alteration. They were able to execute this by adding warm, rustic elements throughout the comfortable and inviting transitional design. KITCHEN

When designing within the city, a reoccurring challenge is working with narrow lots that result in long homes, getting little to no light from anywhere but the front and rear. The duo planned for nearly a year prior to the construction and considered all of the challenges that could arise from the unique narrow lot of this modern cladded, traditionally shaped New York brownstone. Ancerl opted to place the kitchen in the center of the house, opening up the ceiling above and placing an 80 foot skylight which floods the space with natural light while making the area open and spacious. “The two-story kitchen is my favourite room in the house,” explains Ancerl. “We couldn’t have been happier with how it turned out. There is so much life found in that space.” The kitchen was finished with imperfect Calcutta marble to maintain the homes’ rustic and warm theme, along with filling jars with produce to bring in earthy tones and give it a punch. →

SKY ROOF

A lovely hidden gem of this home is the sky roof. Many neighbourhood homes maximize square footage, however the St. Germain home maximized its footage while going up to a half third floor, rather than peaking the roof. This allowed for a 400-foot roof deck with a modern extension that overlooks the streetscape. →

POWDER ROOM

For the powder room, Ancerl was challenged to try something different from his usual modern rustic ideas. During a visit to a local tile shop, he found his inspiration when he stumbled upon some beautiful wood plank tiles. He then selected a live edge slab of wood for the vanity and paired it with the rustic tile. To finish off the room, the designer included one tile with the word “recycle’ written on it and placed it directly above the toilet creating a unique focal point.

In order to perfectly complete the space, furnishings were handpicked, custom made or refurbished to bring together the varying textures and rustic theme found throughout the home. In the end, the residents of St. Germain home were thrilled with their newly designed home. â–

SPRING/SUMMER 2019

Q: You recently released your newest collection

“With Love” during Toronto Fashion Week. Can you tell us a little bit about your latest collection? A: The collection is titled “With Love” and

it’s a bridal wear/evening wear collection. It’s inspired by 90’s and early 2000’s love ballads, particularly the song “So into You” by Tamia. The collection itself evokes the whole feeling of falling in love, having a crush, and love at first sight. Everything is very feminine and very romantic, even the fabrics that I used are a lot of floral prints and are light weight, like organza and chiffon. Other than that, it was a smaller collection and it’s entirely made here in Canada, which actually allowed us to focus more on the details. It’s produced by an all-women’s team here in Canada. Q: What has been your biggest challenge to

overcome when creating this new collection? A: I think when it came to this collection

in particular, I knew that I needed it to be a smaller collection so that way I could only concentrate on the details. When I initially start designing a collection, I have maybe 20-40 looks, depending on how inspired I’m feeling. It was just sort of choosing which looks I wanted to showcase in this collection. Some looks I had to get rid of that I really liked, but they just weren’t cohesive with the collection. I also think that production in itself was challenging because I knew that I wanted to produce it in Canada and then I had to get everything done and do all of the little hand sewing details and the overall finishes, which took up a lot of time. It was actually the first time that we used a lot of Couture finishes on our pieces, just to make the collection a little bit more luxurious. When you’re wearing the clothes, everything has a clean finish and feels like luxury wear. Q: What was it like to take part in Toronto

Fashion Week x RE\SET™?

A: This is my third season with Toronto Fashion

Week x RE\SET™, and I think it’s amazing to always be part of such a huge platform. Before Toronto Fashion Week x RE\SET™ I was doing my own solo shows. I have done a show at the Berkeley Church, Yorkshire 37, a Sudbury 99, but doing solo shows are just so chaotic. As a designer, you want to be concentrating on your collection, but when you do a solo show, your focus is on every little detail, even things like renting chairs or renting lighting, whereas Toronto Fashion Week x RE\SET™ makes it easier for designers. You just show up with the clothes, you put them on the models, and

LUXURYLISTED.CA

24

SPRING/SUMMER 2019

they get on the runway, so it’s really helpful to not have to worry about those other things. It’s an honour to be part of a platform like that.

Q: How did you discover your love of design

and what does it mean to you? A: I’ve always wanted to be a designer since I

was little. I think I was maybe 5 or 6 years old when I decided to become an artist and when I was 11, I decided to make my art more functional. I was literally sitting there in Journal Club writing down how I could make money

SPOTLIGHT

off of art. Clothing was something I was always interested in because my mom was a seamstress and my grandmother was a seamstress, so I grew up with that and it was just something that made me happy. From that point on, I would always carry around a sketch book and sketch designs, and then I went to Ryerson for Fashion Design and then after that, I created my brand. It’s like a dream come true and sometimes it feels surreal that I’m literally doing what I dreamt of when I was a little girl. Q: You moved from India to Canada when you were 5 years old and your designs are a mixture of both cultures. How has your background inspired your designs? A: I put both parts of my culture into the cloth-

ing. You can see that the clothes are South Asian inspired but have that modern twist to it. For example, I will use traditional silhouettes, called a Lehenga Choli, which is a full skirt with a crop top and a Dupatta which is the vail. I’ll do those traditional silhouettes and I’ll incorporate modern fabric just because I find that with doing what I’m doing, a lot of girls who have a similar story to mine don’t resonate with completely traditional clothing or don’t completely resonate with Western attire, so I think I’m bridging the gap between the two and offering the best of both worlds. Q: How did you get your big break? A: There wasn’t really a big break moment, I think

it was just baby steps towards everything. When I initially graduated from Ryerson, I was trying to find a job in the fashion industry and that’s especially difficult to do in Toronto, so because I was struggling to find that placement in the industry, it pushed me into starting my own thing. I had initially started with just doing custom orders and working one on one with clients. I started from my parents’ home basement and got orders through word of mouth. I think Instagram was just picking up and getting more popular, so in 2014, I did about 4 or 5 orders that year. The following year it grew and I did about 50 and the year after it was just too many to count and →

I had to open up a store, so I don’t know if there was necessarily a big break moment, I think it was just really good planning and baby steps towards everything. Q: Who is your dream designer you’d like to collab-

orate with? A: This question is a little bit sad because Karl Lager-

feld was one of my favourites and I always thought that one day I would meet him. I would love to collab with Chanel or even Alexander McQueen, they are all my favourites. Q: Who is one designer that inspires you the most? A: I always say that there’s three of them. One is Coco

Chanel just because she’s so classy and she created garments that are so timeless, even if you were wearing it in the 1920s, the same style is valid now and that’s something that I strive towards for when people are buying my pieces. They are purchasing something that they are investing in for a lifetime because the pieces are classic. I love Alexander McQueen because of his aesthetic and rebelliousness, which I strive towards as well. Lastly is Karl Lagerfeld for his work ethic, the fact that he was working for three brands, even more maybe, and doing his own thing and creating new collections like crazy. Again, I want to strive towards that as well and have that work ethic and keep grinding.

LUXURYLISTED.CA

26

SPRING/SUMMER 2019

Q: What sets you apart from other fashion designers? A: I think it’s the fact that initially when I had started my first

collection, I had incorporated my culture into it. I recently went to the Ryerson graduation show and it was really nice to see all these students incorporating their culture into their creations and that was something that when I had graduated, no one was doing. The fact that I was the only one who had done it at the time, made me stand out from the crowd. I think it was one of those things growing up that you wanted to hide it, but then I had that moment where I thought, “no this is who I am, and this is a part of how I’ve grown up.” So, it was nice to let it out in a creative outlet.

Q: What is one article of clothing that you wouldn’t be able

to live without? A: Sweatpants. When I’m in the studio, sweatpants are my go-to.

It’s not as glamorous as it looks, so you have to be comfortable. I do love to dress up, but on my downtime, I need my sweatpants.

Q: Where do you see yourself and your business in 5 years? A: In 5 years I’d love to globalize even farther. Right now, I have

the store in Yorkville, and I have an online shop, but I would love to have my collections physically available in cities around the world and be dressing Bollywood and Hollywood celebs. I want to become a household name. ■

THE ALL-NEW

ACURA RDX

LUXURYLISTED.CA

36

SPRING/SUMMER 2019

Good looking, poised, a charming personality and loves the outdoors, it’s easy to fall for the all-new Acura RDX. No longer the loaded yet lonesome cousin of the hugely popular Honda CR-V, the third-generation of RDX is a coming-of-age transformation to a truly luxurious mid-sized sport utility, with an emphasis on “Sport”.

LUXURYLISTED.CA

While the Acura brand name may not have the same perceived standing as its luxury class German counterparts, the RDX delivers a real-world driving experience that’s certainly on par, and arguably better. New chassis, new interior, new turbocharged engine, new tenspeed transmission and, what’s the clincher for me, Super Handling All Wheel Drive (SH-AWD).

37

SPRING/SUMMER 2019

When you press on the gas pedal as you reach the apex of a bend, a stabilizing invisible guiding hand seems to gently push the outside rear corner of the RDX. It’s the distinctive torque-vectoring characteristic of SH-AWD at work, as it sends additional drive power to specific wheels when needed. If that seems strange, it’s not. RDX is a super-fun vehicle to take for a drive on a twisty section of road. →

AU TOMOT I V E

When pushed, the new turbocharged 2.0-litre engine provides generous low-end torque and makes a growly nose that sports car fans will appreciate. Overall horsepower (272) is almost the same as the previous V6, but fuel economy is much improved (11.0 L/100km city and 8.6 L/100km highway). Closely spaced gears (all ten) make the transmission a super slick operator and help keep the engine in a sweet power band. A large round dial in the dash centre stack allows the driver select driving modes. There’s comfort, sport and sport+ settings and they do transform the driving per-

LUXURYLISTED.CA

38

sonality of RDX. Would like to see an additional custom mode, however, to allow a driver pick and choose settings. Depending on your tech savvy skill level some of the controls and especially the new infotainment interface may be “totally awesome”, or a wee bit intimidating. Most functions are reasonably intuitive, but there’s a learning curve attached to mastery of the finger operated True Touchpad, with a feature called “absolute positioning”. It’s linked to a large high-mounted 10.2‐inch HD monitor that’s close to driver eye-level and is Apple CarPlay compatible.

SPRING/SUMMER 2019

AU TOMOT I V E

The cabin of my test Premium Elite trim level RDX had a spacious, bright and airy feel and a massive panoramic moonroof was undoubtedly a contributing factor. The eye-catching layout was beautifully finished with quality leather surfaces and authentic Olive Ash wood accents. This top-level trim package also comes with acoustic sound deadening, adaptive suspension dampers, a power liftgate, upgraded front seats with power side-bolsters, a head-up display and a high-end ELS audio system. Cabin noise at cruising speed, on a variety of highway surfaces (including concrete), was impressively quiet. The new body of RDX is now six inches longer than CR-V and it has one the largest cargo areas in its class, plus a handy new in-floor storage compartment. An athletic stance gives this RDX a more muscular look than its predecessor. Front and centre is Acura’s new diamond pentagon grille and it’s flanked by adaptive LED headlights with pop-out washers. In fact, all lighting on my RDX was LED. See for yourself and make a date with an RDX at your local Acura dealer.

The Maldives is a true photographer’s paradise. With its silky soft sands, crystal clear turquoise waters and golden sunsets, the remote islands have all the ingredients for a once in a lifetime photo shoot. GET TO KNOW

NEIL DANKOFF

Neil Dankoff, born and raised in Montreal, is one of North America’s most renowned fine art photographers. After graduating from McGill University and before moving to Toronto, he bought his first digital camera and instantly fell in love with photography. The completely self-taught photographer now exhibits his photographs in his three galleries (Kandy Gallery) as well as throughout the brand new Hotel X Toronto, a luxury resort hotel located on the Lake Ontario Waterfront. With nearly 800 completely different shots taken in locations ranging from China to Iceland to South Africa and many others, Dankoff calls this opportunity the gig of a lifetime. His method of using multiple exposures and focal points to capture landscapes separates him from others. Neil was given two years to travel around the world and take photos specifically for Hotel X Toronto. Every floor of the hotel takes the viewer to a different location. For example, Croatia covers the seventh

floor, while the eighth floor is filled with photos from Bolivia. Dankoff had never really travelled anywhere except to Florida, where his grandmother had a property. At the age of 40, he took a trip to Israel and never stopped. Along with finding his passion for travel, he found himself obsessed with taking photos of his adventures. Comparing his photography process to practicing yoga, Dankoff loves the moments when he’s setting up, just a few minutes before the sun rises waiting for things to unfold. In 2015, Neil opened Kandy Gallery in Montreal along with partners Derek and Kirsty Stern. By early 2018, he had opened another Kandy Gallery in the lobby of Hotel X Toronto and has just opened his first US gallery in the heart of downtown Memphis. K ANDYGALLERY.COM

After arriving, Neil was taken to his water villa and he immediately went to work. With a smile that never seemingly never left his face, Neil spent every day photographing the island; discovering its natural beauty from land, air and underwater. “Each time I set up my camera, I was blown away by the natural beauty all around me.” →

Rose Barroso, founder and operations manager of Barroso Homes, is an awardwinning builder of modern and smart homes. Rose is enthusiastically hands-on, whether it’s during the design process of a new home or a renovation of an existing space, she has a zest for modern design and an eye for hidden possibilities. HOME DÉCOR

This Humber Valley Village home was made up of over 8,000 sqft traditional, overdone, and extremely outdated designs. Barroso decided to transform the original interiors into a stylish contemporary space. She blew out walls, removed doors, and replaced a once very elaborate staircase with a single open riser staircase.

LUXURYLISTED.CA

60

SPRING/SUMMER 2019

A small balcony located at the back of the house was extended to become a covered deck running the entire width of the home. Completed with an open flame fireplace, TV and BBQ area, this became a perfect place to relax after a long day. Barroso transformed her simple grass backyard into a hidden oasis by adding a pool, hot tub, and stunning firepit, perfect for any fall evening.

HOME DÉCOR

The boxy, dark and sectioned off basement was completely recreated by removing walls to open up the space. By substantially enlarging the only window, Barroso was able to design a gym separated by glass walls, allowing light to flow through the whole basement. Beyond the glass walls, a games room was added with an Olympic size Snooker Table and a state-of-the-art Sports Simulator. →

Wanting to create a larger, more modern kitchen, Barroso removed walls to give the space an open feel. A new climate control glass wine cellar was introduced into the main floor, adding a focal point to the family room.

Continuing the theme of creating open spaces throughout the home, more walls were removed, and all bedrooms were given their own ensuites and closets. The master bedroom underwent the most radical transformation, incorporating a seating area, large dressing space, huge walk in closet, and a peaceful and bright white bathroom with a spectacular red tub.

Dani Cooperman is a mixed media artist who constructs imagined spaces to create a dialogue between a place and its supposed inhabitants. Photo by Brooke Wedlock

Born in South Africa and raised in Toronto, Dani Cooperman received her Bachelor of Design from the Ontario College of Art and Design in 2003. While working as an advertising art director, she was drawn to the world of graffiti through her own incessant urge to create. Many street artists experience this same compulsion and utilize public spaces for their artwork despite the inherent risk. In cities around the world, the role of graffiti has become a cultural medium to connect communities and ideas through art.

Harnessing the energy of the space, Cooperman manually adds hand drawn graffiti and street art elements to her own original black and white photographs. These visual constructions add dialogue to her personal experience in that place and time. The viewer is drawn into the scene and given the opportunity to produce their own emotive connection to the fabricated environment. →

When choosing her subject matter/story, Cooperman travels to different cities looking for captivating streetscapes full of dimension and texture and photographs them. Really focusing on her surroundings, she takes detailed notes of conversations that she overhears, the local culture, as well as the distinctive street art native to that part of the world. Afterwards, she uses a sketch pad and her computer tablet to create digital graffiti that is superimposed into the black and white photograph. The final image is printed on a large sheet of plexiglass, and then meticulously painted with multiple layers of acrylic.

During her eleven years in advertising, she hired and worked with some of the best photographers, illustrators and typographers in North America. All disciplines from the various

parts of her life molded together perfectly into the art that she creates today. Creating extremely labour intensive work, the hand drawn graffiti elements and photo retouching takes a few weeks, while the painting process can take anywhere from 2 to 4 months, depending on the scale of the artwork. #MyNiagara James Treadwell, Sommelier and Owner at Treadwell Farm-to-Table Cuisine in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario

Think you know Niagara? Think again. Sure, many of us know Niagara Region as the home of the world-famous falls, but there’s so much more to the region— that spans Port Colborne, St. Catharines, Thorold and Welland—to leave you just as inspired and invigorated as the Niagara Falls themselves. Here we’ll feature Niagara locals and their business to share what their version of Niagara is, to encourage you to discover yours.

FOOD & DRINK

We kick our profile series off with James Treadwell, Sommelier and Owner of critically-acclaimed restaurant, Treadwell Farmto-Table Cuisine. Since 2006, Treadwell has been delighting taste buds with flavors that are uniquely local, uniquely Niagara. Think dishes infused with seasonal ingredients from artisan producers within the region, paired with world class Ontario wine. Needless to say, there’s no better place to sink your teeth into all that Niagara has to offer.

ket, especially for gastronomy, while providing easy access to Toronto. My wife and I currently live in Grimsby and find it a terrific mid-point between the restaurant in Niagara-on-the-Lake and Toronto, where she works. There seem to be a lot of things changing around the region and there are now many activities and businesses that suit our lifestyle.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO WORK/LIVE IN NIAGARA?

HOW DOES NIAGARA INSPIRE WHAT YOU DO?

After going to University in Ottawa and working in Europe, I was presented with an opportunity to open Treadwell with my dad, Chef Stephen Treadwell, in Port Dalhousie. Over the past 13 years, Niagara has been a wonderful place to have our business as it is a growing tourist mar-

From day one, our restaurant has always tried to showcase the many artisanal producers of the region. Many of our suppliers from the area are listed on the back of our lunch and dinner menus and we’re delighted that we have been able to continue those relationships today. See-

WHAT MAKES YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT YOUR ROLE?

I’m equally passionate about wine and providing hospitality to guests at Treadwell. I’m inspired by the professionalism and work ethic of our team and feel positively challenged to go above and beyond our guests’ expectations. A lot has been made of how challenging the restaurant industry is (and it is), but I’m proud of what our business has accomplished up to this point and will continue to push myself and our team to be better.

ing the quality and freshness of the product being produced just minutes from the restaurant inspires me the most. Following the focus of the kitchen, our wine program has been built on showcasing what we felt was the very best of Ontario winemaking, with a specific focus on Niagara. Over the past 13 years, we have built what many believe to be the finest collection of Niagara wines in Canada. Seeing the success of the Niagara wine industry, both on a national and international level, inspires my team and I to continue promoting these diverse and exciting wines. WHAT DOES NIAGARA MEAN TO YOU? WHAT IS ‘YOUR NIAGARA’?

Niagara has been my home, off and on, for the past 22 years. It’s an unbelievably beautiful region with an eclectic mix of individuals and businesses. It’s safe, affordable and tolerant. While it has changed quite a bit over the past decade, I feel there is so much more potential and I’m excited by the opportunities being presented to not only my business, but other likeminded locals as well. WHY SHOULD PEOPLE MAKE A TRIP OUT TO NIAGARA?

Niagara is unique in that it presents a diverse mix of experiences throughout the region. Whether that be sport, arts, wellness, gastronomy, or history— this region accommodates the interests of many. Its location from Toronto and the major cities of the Northeastern US, makes it accessible to those looking for a multiday vacation that is not too far from home and unlike any other. ■

UPTOWN UPDATE JANELOCKHART.COM

When a sudden job transfer meant an impending move from Singapore to Toronto, the homeowners were in a hurry to find a house that was move-in ready. Location and schools were a top priority, so the family found the neighborhood first, then found a house and put in an offer. The home was in good condition, but required some renovating before the big move, leaving the Jane Lockhart design team with the task of creating the perfect home, on a tight deadline.

Above: Front entry bench

Dining room

Above: Children’s playroom

Every room, except the kitchen needed to be addressed. The family’s wish list included an open, main floor for entertaining that had a lot of added storage. The second floor was renovated to create a space for the children’s bedrooms and a playroom, while the top floor was transformed from two bedrooms with a shared small bathroom into a master bedroom suite, with a private ensuite bathroom. Finishing off the makeover, the basement was repurposed as a home office with a reading nook, perfect for the children. →

HOME DÉCOR

In order to close the distance gap, everything from photos of inspiration to final plans were exchanged, updated and refined all through email. Custom-designed storage solutions were integrated throughout the house plans.

Starting the renovation on the top floor, the master bedroom and ensuite were completely redesigned. By working with the roof and gable angles, the Jane Lockhart team made the decision to tuck the bed up to a window, using it as a natural extension of the headboard, and created a bespoke makeup table with added storage. Even space under the bed was utilized for more storage.

LUXURYLISTED.CA

74

SPRING 2019

They made sure to accommodate the depth of the mirror cabinets during construction, so the storage behind was invisible. The design team also laid an elegant “carpet” of Arabesque-patterned tile to resemble a rug leading up to the vanity and added a custom roman blind, which picked up on the blue custom-made vanity.

LUXURYLISTED.CA

75

SPRING/SUMMER 2019

In the family room, the built-in cabinetry around the fireplace was eliminated and replaced with more seating. The design team made the decision to beef up the fireplace by adding custom trim and seats into the new niches beside it. →

HOME DÉCOR

In the basement, the awkward closet located under the stairs was removed to create a home office and a nearby reading space for the kids. The Jane Lockhart design team created a reading nook, using the stairs above as the roofline for custom shelving. A seating nook with a comfy cushion and storage made a neat spot to keep the children occupied and the office desk was made longer to take advantage of the narrow space.

With the clock ticking and travel plans secured, the design team was able to finish the work just in time of the homeowner’s arrival, with the exception of a few ordered furnishings. The clients were happy and felt right at home the minute they walked in the door. ■
