Wayne Gretzky is just as proud of his Canadian roots as Canadians are to call him our own homegrown legend. Here are five things you may not know about the hockey legend.
Plaid 'Dunn' Shirt UNTUCKit
HE TRUSTS HIS WIFE’S TASTE IN HIS CLOTHING.
Gretzky admitted that it was his wife of 30 years, Janet (their glamorous wedding was bailed as “Canada’s royal wedding”), who discovered the brand first, and picked a few shirts up for her famous husband at UNTUCKit’s St. Louis retail location. Gretzky – who described his fashion sense as one of comfort-first – was so fond of the shirts that he reached out to Riccobono. It didn’t take long before Gretzky ended up investing an undisclosed amount in the company and will appear in various marketing campaigns. The famed former professional hockey player and NHL coach is now a seasoned businessman and has his hands in a variety of business ventures, including the Gretzky Estates wine and whiskey label and a couple of restaurants – Gretzky’s in Toronto, and No. 99 Gretzky’s Wine and Whiskey at the Edmonton International Airport. Most recently, Gretzky has partnered with UNTUCKit, a men’s clothing line that specializes in dress shirts that look good untucked. As a new investor and brand ambassador, Gretzky
was recently in town to mark the U.S.-based brand’s arrival in Canada, participating in a Q&A with UNTUCKit founder Chris Riccobono at the shiny new Sherway Gardens store. I learned a little more about “The Great One” – holder of countless NHL records – during the panel and in an impromptu post-panel interview that the refreshingly down to earth icon agreed to. Here are five things you may not know about Wayne Gretzky:

WINTER 2018
HE STARTS THE DAY WITH GIN RUMMY.
Naturally, there is no such thing as a “typical day” in Gretzky’s world, but he says they usually start the same: with coffee and gin rummy with his wife (aw). “It goes in cycles,” says Gretzky of his everyday life. “Sometimes I’m really busy. The last couple of days I was in New York and I was working for a little bit, tomorrow I’m off to China for nine days; so there’s time when I’m busy and there’s time when I am just a father at home, spending time with my two youngest kids. It’s no different than anybody else – you have to get up, you have to work, and you have to put in the time.” →
SPOTLIGHT
HE HAS A SOFT SPOT FOR PIEROGI.
When Gretzky is in Toronto, he often makes an appearance at his restaurant Gretzky’s – which opened its memorabilia-filled doors 25 years ago – where he says his favourite thing on the menu is the pierogi. “I don’t really get a chance to eat them often because in California there aren’t a lot of Polish restaurants,” says Gretzky of his beloved dish. “The people at my restaurant have made them as close to the way my grandmother used to make them. She’d boil them, fry them, sour cream, caramelized onion, and bacon.” HIS FAMILY IS WHAT MAKES HIM PROUDEST TO BE CANADIAN.
While Gretzky has made Canadians proud for decades, he says his family is what makes him beam with good old Canadian pride. “My dad and my mom were always very special people,” said Gretzky. “My dad was the son of immigrants who came over from Poland and Russia but he grew up here. My dad is probably the proudest Canadian in the whole country. I know there are lots of proud Canadians, but wherever he travels – wherever he goes – he always reminds people that he is Canadian and says that it’s God’s country and it’s the best place in the world. YOU CAN FIND HIM IN IDAHO.
“My family is what makes me proudest to be Canadian.”
Where’s his favourite spot to escape it all? “When we were younger, we used to love going to Paradise Island in the Bahamas,” says Gretzky. “It’s safe. It’s close; you don’t have to fly 18 hours to get there. But, as we have gotten older, our favourite spot is Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. We have a summer house there on the lake and it’s only an hour and a half-long flight from our home in L.A. We spend six to eight weeks there in the summertime. My older kids come in and out because it’s such a close flight. The grandkids have a ball because they love to go out on the water, we have a pool there, and they love driving around in the golf carts. It’s probably our favourite place to go.” ■

When searching for the perfect family home, these young homeowners looked no further than outside their own front door, relocating from a traditional style home to a modern new-build across the street. They wanted to accentuate the unique modern details in the house, while also making it a welcoming space to entertain friends and family. They enlisted Leanne Tammaro and Adolphina Karachok of Designtheory to help them create their dream home.

“Sourcing just the right fabrics, mixing patterns, and creating layers of textures gives this home the feel and style the clients were hoping for” SAYS ADOLPHINA.
LIVING ROOM
The floor plan of this 4,500 square foot home was large and expansive with very few partition walls on the main floor. The eye-catching, double-sided fireplace that separated the Living Room and Den area left the clients unsure of how to use this space. Leanne and Adolphina designed a multipurpose layout that included a pair of custom backless sofas, in order to not only fill the space, but create another useful seating area for a morning coffee, after-work cocktail, or additional entertainment area. With the allowance of creative freedom, the Designtheory team was able to customize and curate the perfect pieces for their home.

WINTER 2018
In the formal living room, the combination of creams, whites and various shades of blue were perfectly balanced with warm natural walnut and hints of gold and silver finishes. Geometry played a big part in adding interest to this space. The satin gold geometric coffee table, the herringbone pattern throughout the home, and the leather strapping on a personalized fireplace ottoman all help create a youthful sophistication in the room. Navy blue, cream and walnut are a go-to palette when paired with mixed metals. →
DINING ROOM
The clients had purchased a dining table that was a natural wood finish. It worked perfectly in their previous home but was competing with the featured walnut panels in their new space. Rather than purchasing a new table, when the existing one was a great design and the perfect size, Leanne and Adolphina took a risk and enlisted their most trusted painter to spray finish the table navy blue. The result was stunning and beautifully tied in the blue that runs throughout the house. The clients had existing dining

chairs, so the team reupholstered the head chairs in two fabrics, not only to customize them, but also to introduce another geometric chevron pattern. The back of the dining chairs is one of the first things that you see when entering the home, so they had to be eye-catching and set the tone for the rooms that follow. Since lighting is such an important part of this space, the existing chandelier was replaced with a large matte black and gold Sputnik style chandelier.

POWDER ROOM
The existing powder room had white walls and very little personality. Wallpaper was the perfect way to add interest and repeat the chevron pattern used throughout, but this time in a more luxe gold finish. Interesting and abstract artwork was placed in such a way that it reflected in the wall to wall mirror above the vanity. →
“Powder rooms are a great place to inject some whimsy and pattern” SAYS LEANNE.

“Our favourite part about the home is the warmth we created out of a cool and unfinished space. It feels luxurious but also livable, modern yet cozy, and perfect for this growing family” STATED LEANNE & ADOLPHINA.
FAMILY ROOM
The client’s only request for the Family Room was for it to feel cozy and comfortable, while still blending in with the rest of the home. A large and deep sectional sofa with an oversized upholstered ottoman was sourced, to act as the coffee table, so that the homeowners would be able to relax comfortably. All furniture in the space still maintained tailored lines and modern elements, in order to flow from the formal living room and dining room, but also keep true to the very modern kitchen design. The fireplace wall, featuring large scale Carrara marble tiles, was flanked with modern natural walnut custom millwork. Time and detail were used to put together all accessories in order to stage the floating shelves. The Designtheory team even ordered custom wrapped white books to ensure that the shelves felt perfectly curated.

MASTER BEDROOM
When designing the bedroom, it was important to keep the colour palette continuous, but soften it by using shades of greys, blues and creams, rather than the more saturated colours used on the main floor. The room was large and white which caused it to feel stark. They decided to wallpaper the area behind the headboard with a cream textured wallpaper, to give a pleated fabric look. The upholstered bed was existing and worked well in the space. They added crisp white night tables and installed new articulating wall sconces. Sourcing and customizing all of the bedding allowed them to introduce multiple textures, patterns and colours. â–

FINANCE
FIVE WAYS TO FIGURE OUT YOUR RISK TOLERANCE BY JEFF FINCH, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PL ANNER // 416 695 8600
Every investor knows that risk and return go together. When it comes to risk tolerance, though, everyone’s different and how much you can endure on the downside depends on several factors, including years to retirement, lifestyle and more.
the sidelines or move into “safer” investments? Did it cause you emotional turmoil or were you able to stick to your plan, participate in the recovery and get on with your financial life?” asks Sigurdson. “Answering those questions will give you a good read on your risk tolerance.”
Sandra Sigurdson, Investors Group Director of Strategic Investment Planning, says, “Risk tolerance is subjective. For some investors, losing a few thousand dollars is no big deal. For others dropping even a couple of hundred dollars is a big deal.”
3 // ARE YOU AFR AID OF UNCERTAINTY?
“Your tolerance for uncertainty in your work life and the people you choose as friends are good indicators of your tolerance for uncertainty in the value of your investments,” she says.
Risk tolerance is also both financial and emotional. “For financial, it’s about needing to make the investments that meet the objectives of a long-term financial plan,” she says. “For emotional it’s about making investments that don’t stress you out and negatively affect other aspects of your life.”
4 // DO YOU HAVE OTHER MONEY ELSEWHERE?
If you have other sources of income, like a pension or maybe a sprawling estate you can one day sell, then you may be able to take on more risk in your portfolio.
Here are five things to consider when determining your risk tolerance.
5 // ARE YOU AWARE OF WHAT YOU CAN LOSE?
1 // DO YOU UNDERSTAND THE MARKET?
Research has found that if you put potential losses in percentage terms, you won’t really be able to evaluate how much of decline you can stomach. Put it in dollar terms instead. “Instead of a 30% drop, tell yourself that it’s a $30,000 drop,” she says. “How would that feel? What would you do?”
“If Alpha and Beta are all Greek to you, consider wading in slowly, until you grow your confidence and understanding,” says Sigurdson. 2 // HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED LOSSES?
Your professional advisor can help you build a portfolio with the right level of risk and the right risk management strategies for you. ■
If you’ve been through a downturn before, think about how it made you feel. “Did it cause you to pull back on your investments and perhaps sit on

Black Sheep Interior Design is a boutique firm based out of Toronto, with projects across the GTA, cottage country, and the Caribbean.
Founded by Principal Maia Roffey in 2013, Black Sheep caters to clientele looking for bespoke design tailored to suit their taste and lifestyle. This property in Toronto’s Beaches neighbourhood was no exception. The clients approached Maia and her team to help them update a house with good bones, but gravely dated finishes. They wanted to achieve a sophisticated modern style, without sacrificing the warmth of a family home.

Prior to renovation, the entire house was dominated by golden yellow wood on floors, stairs, newel posts, and handrails. Maia stripped the floors and re-stained them in a muted greige, setting the tone for the project’s monochromatic palette. The spindly posts and handrails were replaced by squared modern options also stained to match the floors, and ornate pickets were swapped for streamlined alternatives. In the foyer, the dated granite flooring was removed to make way for a natural slate laid in a herringbone pattern. To accommodate this busy family’s needs, a custom millwork panel with over-scaled black coat hooks was added to provide additional storage at the entry. →

KITCHEN
In the kitchen, Black Sheep streamlined the layout, opting for one full wall of cabinetry, which incorporates appliances and ample counter space. The island was rescaled to suit entertaining and to maximize storage. Floating wood shelves were custom made with integrated lighting and stained to match the floor below. These provide an opportunity for display and tie the kitchen’s detailing to the rest of the house.

Maia brought drama to the room by using a boldly-veined quartz countertop, which not only waterfalls down both ends of the island, but also up the backsplash. The matte black cabinets with matching hardware and faucet add to the impact of the space. For a final touch, she hung unique open pendants over the island to provide a counterpoint of delicacy against this strong backdrop.

POWDER ROOM
Maia convinced her clients to gut the powder room and front hall closet. These had been poorly laid out, inefficiently eating up floor space and leaving an awkward plan for the bathroom. By reworking the dividing walls and incorporating an alcove in the hallway, Maia increased the usable square footage without impacting on the rest of the main floor. Continuing the bold colour scheme of the nearby kitchen, she used a custom-cut black marble mosaic on the floor for visual impact, while choosing a floating sink to open the space even further. Polished nickel finishes on the plumbing and industrial sconces serve to further elevate the look. →

GREAT ROOM
The vaulted space of the great room is open to a substantial landing on the second floor, which was largely unused. Here, Black Sheep replaced the railing and pickets with a halfhigh wall topped by a custom black rail, creating much-needed office space. Replacing an old ceiling fan with a modern chandelier required the use of scaffolding, but was well worth the effort. This double-height space, which previously felt empty, is now an attractive feature of the house that is visible from both floors.

MASTER BEDROOM
On the third floor, a creamy and dated ensuite was completely overhauled. The sophisticated black and white scheme in the new master bath creates a polished oasis. Maia selected a combination of three porcelain tiles, featuring a mix of hexagons and faux-calacatta colouring. The neutral tones of the tiles’ veining are echoed in the blond wood vanity and curated accessories. No detail was overlooked in putting this space together. Elegant hits of matte black are found throughout; from the lighting, to the plumbing, and even to the hinges on the shower door.
The Black Sheep team worked substantial changes on all three floors of this home. The finished product is a testament to that fact that a minimal colour scheme, when carefully implemented, can create a space that is anything but cold or boring. â–

Bal Harbour’s dining scene has changed dramatically to mirror Miami’s culinary renaissance. Bal Harbour Shops has become known for its hip eateries as much as its designer boutiques these days. Philadelphia restaurateur Stephen Starr has achieved stellar results with his adjacent Asian and French concepts, Makoto and Le Zoo. Both offer beautifully appointed interiors, as well as outdoor terraces to take advantage of balmy ocean breezes. Across the main entrance, Carpaccio feeds an astounding number of diners a day. Celebrities and jet setters are often spotted on its packed patio. Upstairs has a completely new vibe with the arrival of the Grill at Bal Harbour for classic and healthy fare from Hillstone Restaurant Group. The innovative, indoor/outdoor design inspired by a teak yacht feels akin to dining in a tropical treehouse. Also on the second level, Sante Fe News & Espresso has been remodelled with a brighter, more streamlined look.
OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES & NATURE
Begin and end the day with a sunrise or sunset stroll along Bal Harbour’s manicured beach. Get a cardio workout on the $3 million, onemile-long beach path with separate lanes for cyclists and pedestrians. As part of Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden’s Million Orchid Project to restore native species to the region, the village purchased and planted 7,500 orchids in palm trees along the path.
ARTS & CULTURE
Though museums and performance halls are within minutes, culture blooms right here. “Unscripted Bal Harbour,” a public art program, continues its mission with another packed season of tours, talks and exhibits. ArtChats invite artists, art professionals and collectors such as Don and Mera Rubell, Jorge Pérez and Teresita Fernández to share insight into their passion.
Residents and guests receive Art Access cards for complimentary admission and tours of local institutions, art fairs and exclusive events, an incredibly valuable perk during the annual Art Basel Miami Beach in December.

The inside story of the new Ram 1500, with interior studio Chief Designer, Ryan Nagode.
“It’s amazing just how much it has changed in the last ten years,” said Ryan Nagode, Chief Interior Designer for Ram, Dodge and SRT products at FCA. “Especially with trucks, it was a mindset change to consider them as more than just a tool.”
When Ram was launch as a stand-alone truck brand in 2009, a decision was also made to split its design studio into exterior and interior studios. The reasoning behind this move was to put more emphasis on them individually, gain leadership in new technological innovations and satisfy a growing demand for more luxurious, high-end truck editions.
“Yes, we still have our Tradesman, a no frills, get-it-done truck,” added Nagode. “On the other hand, our Ram 1500 Laramie Long Horn is a luxury SUV with a cargo bed in the back, in case you need to haul stuff. We do unique leather and trim panel wraps, intricate stitching, etching and embossing, stuff we never did on trucks. Our Laramie Long Horn and Limited trim levels are definitely luxury vehicles now.” →

There are very obvious differences between a car and a truck interior, such as cabin size, storage bin space and the seating is also more upright. “That overall sense - that you’re not on top of each other - is a big thing for truck buyers,” added Nagode. “When you fold the rear seats up, there’s enough room in the back of a crew cab to put a giant TV inside.” “Early on in the planning stage (for the new Ram 1500) we decided we wanted to attract more luxury buyers,” continued Nagode. “For me that translated into looking at more high-end materials, even before we started to sketch the interior. Our rough open-pore barn wood trim, is a natural material that we hadn’t worked with before. We also paid a lot of attention to the jewelry elements, such as

the little filigree etching details on the metal trim. It’s not something that a buyer may pick up on right away, but we want a buyer to feel like this vehicle is tailored to them.” “We spent a ton of time on the centre console, we did mockups and breadboard models on how we could use the extra space, since we didn’t have a transmission shifter to work around.” Transmission drive selections are now made via a rotary dial located on the dashboard. You can also fit a 15-inch laptop in the console, which has five USB ports. “A lot of owners apparently now prefer to give their kids individual iPads rather than have a single built-in entertainment system for rear passengers,” according to Nagode.
