What’s a designer to do when contemporary taste collides with a classic space? When their modern-loving clients bought a traditional home in Toronto’s prestigious Lawrence Park neighbourhood, Black Sheep embraced the opportunity to knit together seemingly disparate styles to make this house a home for a busy family of four. Layers upon layers of moulding created a stiflingly formal environment and a 14’ high fieldstone fireplace in the family room injected a surprising rustic note, out of step with the rest of the house.

A tight timeline dictated that extensive renovations were out of the question, so instead they focused on simplifying and unifying the main floor. Fluted columns were filled, fireplaces ripped back, cabinets resurfaced, and tiles replaced. Upon entry, the foyer’s eye-catching custom marble floor establishes the tone of the design – a space that is about bold profiles and monochromatic contrasts. The dining room’s champagne light fixtures sparkle against charcoal walls of inset panelling. A chevron marble mosaic backsplash and rippled drapery in the kitchen provide a natural undulation paired with the simplified kitchen cabinets. →

Black Sheep also established a sense of levity by juxtaposing the traditional crisp architectural details with contemporary decorative choices in organic profiles and finishes – a kidney-shaped sofa in black velvet grounds the light living room while the ecru shagreen console pops against the dining room’s dark backdrop. She also mentors young women through Conestoga College's Jill of All Trades and acts as an Ambassador for Habitat for Humanity's Annual Women Build Event, a program that calls on women to help build stronger, safer communities.

You are such a great role model for women in the skilled trades industry. What do you want people to know about a career in the trades?
Q:
A: I want the next generation to stay open-
minded and just go for it! It’s a fun, lucrative and rewarding career. We need more skilled trades workers, so there will always be work for you. You never know what you’ll be amazing at until you give it a try!
Congratulations on having a daughter! What is one thing about motherhood you’ve learned that you didn’t know before?
Q:
A: Thank you! The entire experience has
been so surreal. I never really considered having a family before. The time just seems to fly by! Honestly, I’ve learned SO much! I didn’t realize all the work it takes to be the best parent I can possibly be. As hard as it is, I now know that I can still be a great mom, and balance both my career and a little time for myself. I think it’s so important to make sure to focus on myself at least a little bit. That way, I can be in a better state of mind to be there for my daughter, Cali, and provide her with whatever she needs.
You have such a hectic schedule between shooting TV shows like CTV Life Channel’s Holmes 911, an upcoming show on CTV, appearing at speaking engagements around North America, and raising a baby. How do you manage to juggle everything and what would your advice be to others trying to strike a balance between work and home life?
There were young female apprentices brought out to help on Holmes 911. Did you feel you were a mentor to them?
Q:
A: It’s been tough trying to find the right
balance that works for my family and me.
Q:
Sometimes I make mistakes, and that’s okay. If I forget to respond to an email or I forget to pack Cali’s favourite toy, I forgive myself because nobody’s perfect! It takes time to sort it all out. I am tired and some days I can be a little more irritable than others, but it’s all worth it at the end of the day. The biggest thing I can say to other working/busy moms out there is have patience with yourself, and you CAN do it! It might seem daunting now, but it gets easier as time goes on.

A: We brought two amazing women to help out
while I was pregnant and therefore away from the tools for safety reasons. It was so great to have women with us and I encourage more women to join the work site! I don’t know if I would say that I felt like a “mentor,” but I certainly felt like a support to them on site. I remember when I was a young woman starting out, I was terrified to be the only female on site. But once I saw another woman around, I immediately felt more confident, so it definitely helps to have that kind of kinship. →

Q:
What excites you most about your work?
A: What excites me most about my work is that I get to learn
something new every day. I find my work challenging and fun and I look forward to trying different and new things. That, and we get to work with some truly amazing and deserving families. There is nothing quite like the feeling of helping someone out who really deserves it.
You work alongside your father Mike and brother Mike Jr. every day. Does working with family present any challenges you didn’t expect? And what do you love most about it?
Q:
A: Of course! Working with those two can sometimes be
difficult. The main challenge I find is trying not to bring work home with me. When family spends time together, it’s to connect and have fun, not to run through your next work day. But, we do have a great time together on site. Some days we can argue and disagree, like anyone, but we learn from one another and it’s just a really fun atmosphere!
Q: HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT WORKING IN A MALE-DOMINATED FIELD? DO YOU FEEL THAT FEMALE REPRESENTATION IN THE SKILLED TRADES HAS INCREASED SINCE YOU BEGAN YOUR CAREER? A: At the beginning, I was afraid; I didn’t want
to be embarrassed at all. It took time for me to understand that I will never know everything, and as long as I’m trying my best, it doesn’t matter if I make mistakes or have to ask for help. I do feel like more and more women are starting to get involved in the trades, which makes me so happy. It’s becoming more and more acceptable and ladies are just going for it! I love to see that happening and hope it keeps up.
What do you hope to teach your daughter regarding career choices and gender stereotypes?
Q:
A: I want to teach her never to succumb to ste-
reotypes and that she can do whatever she wants regardless of her gender. I want to encourage her to try everything and stay open-minded when it comes to her career. I’m going to reinforce to her that she’ll be great at anything she puts her mind to and that I’ll be there to support her no matter what.
What do you hope to accomplish in the coming years, both career-wise and personally?
Q:
A: Good question! In my career, I want to con-
tinue pushing myself. There are some things

I find harder than others and I want to focus on those and work past my own insecurities. Personally, I want to be the best mother I can be. I want to raise a kind human being and provide her with all the opportunities to help shape her as an adult. I also want to travel the world. I used to be a backpacker and I miss it!
How has your dad’s motto to “make it right” influenced your decisions on the job site and in life in general?
Q:
A: This motto affects my life choices every
day. I remind myself daily, “Why do something half way? Make it right, and do it right, or don’t bother at all.” I don’t want to kind-of care about something. Try your best and ask for help when necessary. ■

Epilepsy South Central Ontario hosted its inaugural Culinary Showdown at the Oakville Convention Centre with SMEG as the sponsor. The Culinary Showdown included an all-star lineup of famous Celebrity Chefs who were joined by the top fifty fundraisers for an action-packed day and evening. The day began with a cooking school for the fundraisers as they moved from the five stations, learning some of the tricks of the trade by celebrity chefs, Claudio Aprile, Massimo Capra, Mary Berg, Alvin Leung, and Michael Smith. The evening was a fast-paced MasterChef-style competition, hosted by John O’Hurley and with Team Claudio Aprile taking home the coveted trophy. All proceeds will help the important services and support provided by the Epilepsy SCO. Hot off the press... next year’s date for the Culinary Showdown is November 24. The feeling of spaciousness within the cabin and its solidity on the road are remarkable and defy the A250’s exterior dimensions. A large panoramic sliding sunroof, which is a standard feature, also adds to that roomy cabin feel. Mercedes engineers are masters of comfortable ride and the A250 comes with a sophisticated four-link rear suspension. Its rear axle is also mounted in a subframe that’s isolated from the body with rubber bushings, to further dampen driveline and road vibrations. →

A large dual-screen replaces both the conventional instrument cluster and multi-media display. It seems to float atop a sweeping dashboard that wraps into the doors and has a series of dramatically large circular turbine-like air vents. Features on the twin 10.25-inch (26.04 cm) digital displays in my test A250 were selected with steering wheel controls or via a centre console touch pad. In addition it came with an (LED) ambient lighting system throughout the cabin with up to ten “colour world� selections that were super cool. In fact, all lighting in my A250 was the LED type, including the headlights.

On the utility side, the A250 offers a very respectable 370 litres of cargo space that can be expanded to 1,210 litres when the rear seats are folded. The expanded cargo area has a level floor with a sturdy cover over the spare wheel. Occupants of the front seats have a surprisingly generous amount of headroom despite the panoramic roof. Life is more constrained in the rear seats, yet they still provide useable space for two adults.

The A250 may not be the hottest hatch on the market, but it can dart to 100km/h in about six seconds, so it’s certainly no slouch. Power comes from a turbocharged 2.0 litre engine that can produce 221 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque and it’s mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. A super-hot (300+ hp) version of “Hatch”, from the AMG division and called the A35, should arrive here in early 2020, if there’s a greater need for speed. The 4Matic all-wheel system is another standard feature on A250, in Canada. It’s a fully variable torque distribution system that provides sportier drive characteristics when a driver selects the “dynamic” drive mode, and includes power take-off to the rear axle. On the safety front, A250 also has the very latest driving assistance system from Mercedes called Active Brake Assist. It’s designed to prevent or mitigate the consequences of a rear-end collision with another vehicle or an impact with crossing pedestrians or cyclists, by providing advance warning and automatic braking. As they say, really good stuff can come in small packages. And that certainly holds true for the Mercedes-Benz A250 4Matic Hatch. A-CLASS

Nihi Sumba
Being a landscape photographer, I’m constantly searching for stunning new locations that have the potential for great captures. One day while on Instagram, I noticed an amazing photo of some wild horses on a spectacular beach. After a little digging, I discovered that this beach was part of a resort called Nihi Sumba, located on the island of Sumba, in Indonesia. I contacted the resort and we soon came up with an arrangement for me to come visit for a five-day photoshoot. The island of Sumba is an hour flight from Bali, another location I had been wanting to photograph, so I made a similar arrangement with the beautiful Capella Ubud Resort and my exciting Indonesia photo trip was set. →

After a quick 22 hour flight from Toronto (30 hours with layover), I arrived in Bali and headed right to the world famous Tegallalang Rice Terrace to scope it out for the following days’ sunrise shoot. Afterwards, I finally checked into the Capella Ubud Resort, which is described as a “unique tented camp, which sits in harmony with the surrounding nature, inspired by the early European settlers from the 1800s”. There are twenty-two, one-bedroom tents (each with it’s own theme) as well as one, two-bedroom lodge, all with private salt-water pools. This place is unique with a capital “U”. No televisions here but no matter, the views and sounds of the rainforest were entertainment enough! I only spent two nights at Capella Ubud but their 10 course dinner (cooked right in front of you) was surely the best culinary experience of my life! I was able to capture the photos I needed and then it was off to another slice of paradise, the island of Sumba.

Mamole Tree House
The Nihi Sumba Resort is truly a hidden gem but it might not be for long as Travel + Leisure picked it as The Best Hotel in the world in 2016 and then again in 2017. Nihi Sumba has eleven types of villas that make 27 residences with 38 bedrooms. The residences go from one to five bedrooms and all are themed and they even have a three-bedroom tree house called Mamole, which comes with three pools and numerous outdoor lounging areas. I was fortunate enough to stay in the tree house for one night and I couldn’t think of one reason why I wouldn’t be happy living out the rest of my life there. →

All the villas are scattered at different levels above the shore so all of them have sea views. The resort faces the sunset which can be seen from anywhere on the property. Their beach now ranks number one on my list and you can often have it all to yourself. Both outdoor/beachside restaurants offer great views of Nihi’s world-class surfing. The waves are unreal and on one occasion, I got to witness dolphins surfing the waves alongside the surfers!
Something that also stood out for me at Nihi was the “vibe”. Not only was everyone friendly, but also incredibly interesting. The mix of professional surfers, photographers and honeymooners made for some great conversation around the beach bar.

And did I mention the horses? Nihi Sumba has a stable of what seems to be semi-wild horses, which could be seen running along the resort’s massive beach throughout the day. On more than one occasion, I was doing a photo shoot along their path and told not to move an inch as they approached and stampeded past me on either side. This was one of the scariest, yet at the same time, exhilarating experiences in my career and I was thankful for the opportunity (and the advice).
You have heard, “A picture is worth a thousand words”. Well, in this case, try a million. Thank you Indonesia. Until we meet again. ■
