Foodies rejoice in Aldershot Village Aldershot Village BIA (Business Improvement Area) is where food enthusiasts can congregate (six feet apart). It’s the place to discover local gems and pick up something tasty for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Aldershot Village BIA executive director Judy Worsley says foodie culture is quickly growing. “If you’re a foodie, Aldershot is the place to be.” There’s something for everyone in Aldershot. Whether you’re looking for fast food, fine dining or a specialty food item, you can find what you need in the heart of Aldershot. White Oak Plaza at 175 Plains Road is home to the award-winning J&G Meats Ltd. for high-quality, premium meat and poultry. The Platter Company gourmet market offers oneof-a-kind imported cheeses, bakery bread, homemade meals, sauces and more. Turtledoves features specialty items like cakes, muffins, pies, tarts and more that are skilfully created without gluten. Aldershot’s premium oil and gourmet vinegar shop, The Olive Oil Dispensary joins the foodie delights. Worsley says it’s a great spot for picking up infused and truffle oils for cooking and bread dipping as well as an array of flavoured balsamic vinegars.

Just down the street, enjoy an extensive selection of pastries, cookies, sweets and savouries, breads, pies, and strudels from Flour Child Bakery. Now more than ever it’s important to shop local. Sixty-four cents of every dollar spent locally stays in the community. “There are many reasons to buy local,” says Worsley. “Studies have shown that when you buy from an independent, locally-owned business, more of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses, service providers, and farms - continuing to strengthen the economic base of the community.” That’s not all that happens when you shop local. Supporting community groups and keeping Aldershot Village unique is all part of the positive change when you support small businesses. Explore Aldershot Village and experience all of the gourmet goods and tasty offerings while supporting local and investing in your community. For more information on what Aldershot Village BIA has to offer, view the directory at aldershotbia.com.

Aldershot Business Community Awards Aldershot Business Community Award presented by the Aldershot Village BIA is pleased to announce that nominations are now open for the Aldershot Business Community Award to recognize a business that has supported and fostered community engagement in the Aldershot community. SPRINGING FORWARD (OPTIMISTICALLY)

D

ear Ward 1 friends and neighbours. We have just passed the one year anniversary of the global pandemic caused by COVID-19. I really didn’t think that I would still be writing about it and still not certain of a future timeline on a return to normal. We can be optimistic now that vaccinations are finally here and we are starting to see positive results and a lower death toll in our province. As more age brackets become available, I encourage everyone to please book your appointment online through Halton Region (https://www. halton.ca/For-Residents/New-Coronavirus/COVID-19-Vaccines/COVID-19-Vaccination-Clinics). The sooner we achieve a majority of residents vaccinated the sooner we can see a return to normal in the economy and all recreation activities. I know personally, myself and my family really miss the ability to play hockey games. I have always played in multiple leagues and averaged around 100 games per year. Three of my children were rep hockey players as well and averaged 3-4 ice times per week during the season. Removing that type of recreation for teenagers has left many of them lost for recreation opportunities, especially during the cold winter months. Luckily this year was a successful pond hockey year with a solid month of sub-zero temperatures to ensure good thick ice at many local ponds. My kids enjoyed the pond hockey so much that we headed north to the cottage a few weeks ago in search of more winter and ice. We certainly found it with 3 feet of snow

Kelvin with his family enjoying the warmer temperatures during this past Easter Holiday

on the ground but the temperatures were too warm and the ice too soft for skating. Burlington does have many outdoor basketball nets, paved bike paths and play courts for all to enjoy. I have certainly noticed the popularity of such areas this spring. We ask that everyone be aware of social distancing and crowding. With the consistent warm weather approaching many families will be tempted to get together for social gatherings. Please be cautious and follow public health guidelines and keep outside with restrictions. We are now in the province-wide Emergency Brake Grey zone again which limits outdoor gatherings to only 5. Getting outside to enjoy a hike or visiting one of Burlington’s many parks and conservation areas may be a safer way to see family and friends. Many businesses are looking for some consistency in order to gain back lost market share from over the past year. Halton

Region has consistently had lower numbers of COVID-19 cases than our neighbours and it would be great to see it stay that way. We recently heard from our Regional Medical officer of Health that they believe the Halton Regions’ affluent work force enables it to have a large number of employees working from home where in our neighbouring regions, that has been a more difficult task. Those working in essential services, manufacturing and Amazon warehousing, simply cannot work from home and are more subject to exposure from COVID-19. There have been many calls for a new vaccination strategy to target these workplaces but at the time of writing this, none have been implemented as of yet. Hopefully everyone can get outside and enjoy some of Burlington’s outdoor parks and open spaces. It’s also a perfect time to start the spring garden cleanup and prepare your yard for the planting season ahead or that backyard project that can help your family enjoy a staycation safely at home. Thank you, and keep well.

ENCHANTED FOREST

Back in November, my sister took her daughters to Bronte Park where they discovered "the gnome trail". My one niece loved it and told me excitedly the next day, about the "fairy tale theatre" and other things she had seen. I loved the idea so much, that I decided to try and start the same thing here. There were already beautiful painted rocks all over the place, which people seemed to enjoy, and this would take it all a step further. I painted some wooden bird-houses, trees and animals and put them out along one of the trails. The idea grew. My mom helped out with the artistic side of things, while my dad was the handyman with the drill. 10

NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA

I made some little signs with positive, encouraging sayings on them such as "Believe In Yourself" or "You Are Enough". I also made two larger signs saying "Sherwood’s Enchanted Forest Trail, This Way". The "enchanted forest" continued to grow and others began to add things as well! Whenever someone saw me with something, I would just tell them that I loved what was going on, so I was making a contribution. Every single person I spoke to, young, old and everywhere in between, loved it as well. I didn’t hear a single complaint, in fact, people thanked me! About a month ago, I was walking into the trail with some addons when to my complete disappointment, it was all gone. I have since found out that it was the City of Burlington who removed everything because they had not given permission for this. The exact words were "This area is a woodlot and is not intended to have such displays installed, certainly not without any prior discussion with City staff."

If anyone from the city is reading this, I am truly sorry. I should have asked before starting the enchanted forest. I think it just got bigger than I expected, but regardless, I should have checked beforehand. However, was it really necessary to take it all down? There were some gorgeous things in there that had been worked hard on, and some had been done by young children who don’t understand where their artwork has gone.

This wasn’t just my project; it was a community project. In these dark days of COVID uncertainty, going for a walk is something we can still do, and if some wooden shapes and kind words can make someone’s walk more enjoyable, then really, what’s the harm? I understand that not asking first was a poor judgement call on my part, but the entire neighbourhood should not be penalized for my mistake. Especially in a time when this kind of inspiration is something that the whole world so desperately needs. Thank you, to all the people I’ve met, and those I didn’t who shared kind words, took pictures and contributed to the trail. Our efforts may have been removed from the forest, but will remain forever in our hearts and minds.

Ireland House Museum

Joseph Brant Museum

Built in 1837, Ireland House was home to one of Burlington’s earliest families. Descendants occupied the house until 1985. The home interprets 3 distinct generations and showcases a collection that is largely original. Ireland House Museum consists of the family home, cottage and woodlands.

Joseph Brant Museum combines the replica Brant house with state-of-theart exhibition and programming space. Featuring three permanent galleries and space for special exhibitions, the Museum showcases Burlington’s history by sharing perspectives about the past, present and future. The Museum is named after Burlington’s first citizen, Joseph Brant (Thayendanegea).

Due to COVID-19, Ireland House Museum remains closed to the public while physical distancing measures are in place. Private workshops, tours and homeschool sessions are available as public health measures allow. When operating in more normal times, the Museum offers a unique roster of educational programming, volunteer opportunities and facility rentals.

A Bit of History… In 1798, King George III granted Joseph Brant 'Thayendanegea' (a Mohawk and British army captain), 3,450 acres at the head-of-the-lake (Burlington Bay) for his services to the Crown during the Seven Years War and the American Revolution. Construction of the Joseph Brant Museum began in 1937, with the official opening of the Museum on May 22, 1942. For over 30 years, the need to improve the facilities was a well-documented priority. In 2016-17, three levels of government and the Burlington Museums Foundation were able

to make this long-awaited objective a reality by committing to the 'Joseph Brant Museum Transformation' project. The "new" Joseph Brant Museum opened September 15, 2019. At this time, Joseph Brant Museum is open with a limited schedule. Currently on view are the Burlington Gallery and the Costume Gallery. COVID-19 Protocols have been implemented to allow the public to safely enjoy the Museum exhibitions. Pre-book your visit on our website, museumsofburlington.ca.

Upcoming Special Exhibition Health in Space: Daring to Explore Date: April 13 - September 19, 2021 Location: Joseph Brant Museum Health in Space: Daring to Explore is a special exhibition developed by the Canada Aviation and Space Museum, one of three museums under Ingenium – Canada’s Museums of Science and Innovation, in collaboration with the Canadian Space Agency. Health in Space demystifies the health challenges — such as variable gravity, radiation, and isolation — that astronauts face while living and working in space. Through authentic artifacts and captivating interactive activities, this exhibition will engage visitors to better understand Canada’s role in advancing health research. Discoveries in this field will be essential for the success of future deep-space expeditions, and may also help solve medical challenges on Earth. Health in Space also includes video interviews with Canadian astronauts which offer first-hand insight into their experiences. A special section within the exhibition highlights astronaut David Saint-Jacques' recent mission, from his selection and training to the experiments conducted while aboard the ISS.

Spring is in the air! These garden plots looked so nice last summer and right now all we see is potential. What we’ve been able to do through the original Sysco Foods grant and thanks to the City of Burlington, is bring fresh produce into the support offering for our clients. Families love to receive home grown, organic fresh vegetables all summer long and our own garden plots in addition to the amazing support from Grow-a-Row and Grow-to-Give allowed this to become a reality. It’s also such a great way to engage the community as well.

If you are interested in sharing some of your time as a volunteer gardener please email us at garden@burlingtonfoodbank.ca and we can start scheduling time for planting, weeding, watering and eventually harvesting. We’d also like to thank the other plot owners at Maple Gardens that generously donated some of their own harvest last year to help us out. During the off-season, we purchase fresh vegetables twice a week to make sure its part of your support. If you are in need or know of someone who could use our help PLEASE have them email us at info@burlingtonfoodbank.ca or call 905-637-2273 to make arrangements to have food dropped at their door or make arrangements to pick it up through our curb-side pickup option. If you are a resident in Burlington, we are all here to help. Don’t struggle – give us a call. ■
