Working from Home
H
Hello Ward 1 friends and neighbours, as of July 20, 2020 the City of Burlington initiated a mandatory Mask Bylaw which was unanimously supported by council. Just a few days later, the Halton Regional Mask Bylaw was also unanimously supported by the Halton Region council. I was fully supportive of these initiatives. I believe that this important bylaw and the fact that our numbers are very good, led the Province to announce that Halton may move into Stage 3 beginning Friday July 24th. As a local business owner and passionate small business supporter, I too have felt the negative effects of the lockdown. We cannot afford another lockdown of any length of time. The financial hardship of closing businesses and jobs lost many not be known for some time but as our economy opens up again, we must all take as many precautions as we can to eliminate the virus from our communities and preventing a second wave. Stage 3 allows for many more businesses to open and for more travel throughout the GTA where there are greater numbers of infection than in our local community. The timing of the Mask Bylaw is tied to the economic reality that we must learn to live with COVID-19 in our business environment and control the transmission as best we can. As business owners we must build customer confidence that our patrons will be safe while using our premises. Having strict upper level government policies has certainly helped many small businesses by not needing to recreate a policy from scratch. Our Medical Officer of Health at the Halton Region supports these measures, and many countries around the world are moving to mandatory mask usage as a means of protection for the public. In combination with social distancing and hand washing, masks are a simple addition that we are asking the public to use to prevent further transmission of COVID-19. Science and trials on masks as it relates to COVID-19 transmission are relatively new and not yet well known but that should not be reason to wait on this important safety measure. We know masks will prevent droplets from leaving the mouth and nose acting as a physical barrier. WORKING FROM HOME TIPS As many of us are adjusting to a longer term working from home arrangement, I would like to offer some helpful points to assist those that are struggling at work/ life/home balance:

Councillor Galbraith with his partner Angie modeling face masks donated by the Gazette Face Mask Community Initiative.
1. CREATE BOUNDARIES OF WORKING TIMES Oftentimes, working from home involve ones’ mobile device and we can get attached to this all hours of the day. It becomes difficult to separate between when we are working and when we are with our families. Limiting working hours can help to mentally separate these two important aspects of our lives. 2. COMMIT TO AN EXERCISE PROGRAM The feeling that we get from a good hard sweatinducing workout can have many mental benefits and help to deal with the stresses of work. Exercise can be in many forms - walking, cycling, working out to online videos and even yard work. 3. ENJOYING NATURE Often being stuck at home for many hours working and then being with family can be draining - sometimes a change of scenery is necessary. Burlington has many great parks and open spaces that are all available now for you to explore. 4. KIDS Try to include your kids in family fitness or park visits as they may be experiencing some similar frustration with being stuck at home. Having the family unit happy and working well together is going to help everyone get through this pandemic together. If we all work together we can get through this unprecedented time. Please support your fellow citizens and small business by wearing a mask in public indoor spaces and helping prevent any further outbreaks.

Stories of mythical beings have been with us for thousands of years. These legends, which were sometimes inspired by fossils or living animals, continue to inspire us today. Now open at Joseph Brant Museum and running until January 3, 2021, Giants, Dragons & Unicorns: The World of Mythic Creatures traces the natural and cultural roots of some of the world’s most enduring mythic creatures. Organized by the American Museum of Natural History in New York, Giants, Dragons & Unicorns: The World of Mythic Creatures features unique cultural objects to highlight the surprising similarities and differences in the ways people around the world envision and depict mythic creatures. 8

The World of Mythic Creatures ON V IE W AT T HE JO SEPH BR A N T MUSEUM By Museums of Burlington | museumsofburlington.ca
The exhibition includes models and cast fossils of prehistoric animals to investigate how they could have – through misidentification, speculation, fear, or imagination – inspired the development of several legendary creatures. For example, visitors will discover how narwhal tusks were believed to be magical remnants of unicorn horns, how dinosaur fossils may have been mistaken for the remains of griffins, and how tales of sea monsters may simply have been fisherman’s tales of real creatures such as the oarfish and giant squid. Exhibition highlights include a stunning vibrant sculpture of the African water spirit Mami Wata; a replica “Feejee mermaid,” of the type made famous by showman P. T. Barnum, created by sewing the head and torso of a monkey to the tail of a fish; a “life-size” model of a European unicorn; and a dramatic model of a kraken, whose tentacles appear to rise out of the floor as if surfacing from the sea.
Giants, Dragons & Unicorns: The World of Mythic Creatures also offers numerous interactive stations throughout the exhibition. Visitors are invited to participate in activities like rearranging scale models of mammoth bones to look like a giant human skeleton. In an engaging digital interactive, visitors can build their own dragon and watch as it comes alive in a virtual environment. The exhibition also includes several video interviews with experts in various fields discussing the significance of mythical creatures and their possible real-life counterparts. Burlington resident Jordan Cumberland has spent much of her life with a camera in hand. She comes
by her talent and love for photography honestly. Her dad, a camera buff himself, inspired his daughter’s hobby and taught her a love of nature when she was little. Jordan’s interest in combining her love of nature and photography was further sparked when she took a photography course in college and her professor pointed out her eye for natural beauty and attention to detail. ►

Guilt-Free Pizza with a
FIERY KICK Don’t settle for everyday marinara when saucing your next pizza. Here, we’ve topped a gluten-free cauliflower crust with a fiery curry sauce and tandoori-spiced chicken for an Indian-inspired pie.
Ingredients • 1 pkg (300 g) PC cauliflower pizza crust
Chef's Tip Baking the crust on a rack allows for maximum air circulation while also supporting the weight of the toppings – and avoiding any messy spills in the oven.
• 2 boneless skinless chicken thighs • 1 tsp (5 mL) tandoori spice blend • 2 tsp (10 mL) olive oil • 1 cup (250 mL) lightly packed baby spinach • 1/3 cup (83 mL) tikka masala cooking sauce • 1/4 cup (60 mL) thinly sliced red onion • 1 cup (250 mL) shredded mozzarella cheese
Chicken
Tikka Masala PIZZA Prep Time: 10 minutes Cook Time: 30 minutes Serves: 6
Directions STEP 1. Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C). Place crust, bottom (flat) side up, on wire rack set over baking sheet. Bake, flipping crust halfway through, until edges are golden, 20 to 24 minutes. STEP 2. Meanwhile, sprinkle chicken with tandoori spice. Heat oil in non-stick skillet over medium heat. Cook chicken, turning once, until golden and no longer pink inside; about 8 minutes. Transfer to cutting board; let cool enough to handle. Thinly slice into bitesize pieces. STEP 3. Wipe skillet clean; heat over medium heat. Cook spinach, stirring, until wilted and liquid has evaporated; about 2 minutes. Remove from heat. STEP 4. Spread sauce onto crust, leaving 1/2 inch (1 cm) edge uncovered. Arrange chicken, spinach, onion and cheese over top in even layers. Bake until bubbling and browned; 7 to 8 minutes. Let stand 2 minutes.
