The Woolcott Team
ANNUAL COAT DRIVE By Leslie Styles
It was another successful coat drive held by The Woolcott Team which took place in the parking lot of their new office on Dundas. As always, coffee, hot chocolate and doughnuts were served to everyone who came out and donated their gently used coats and winter wear for the Good Shepherd Centre in Hamilton. The Woolcott’s also accepted kitchen items such as pots, pans, bowls and flatware to name a few. The Woolcott Team would like to extend a huge thank you to the entire community who have come out to support this worthwhile cause year after year.

Aldershot’s
TREE LIGHTING By Leslie Styles
It was a crisp November evening for Aldershot’s annual tree lighting at Downsview Plaza. In spite of the chilly weather, the community came out to enjoy the festivities including the horse-drawn carriage rides and visiting with Santa and Mrs. Claus. The Children’s Choir entertained the crowd just before the talented James Ferris Band took the stage. As an added bonus, food was available at the vendors market including delicious clam chowder, cookies, pies, apple strudel and so much more from the new Flour Child Bakery, located in the plaza, and one of this event’s primary sponsors. Halton Police was their to support the event with a parked cruiser for the ‘Cram-a-Cruiser’ non perishable food drive in support of the Compassion Society. As always, the giant Christmas tree was the main attraction and bedazzled everyone with it’s lights and decorations, bringing in the Christmas season.

ALDERSHOT TRAVEL Looking to plan a corporate event, organize a destination wedding or customize an African Safari? Aldershot Travel is here to help and they have been since 1977. We sat down with Barb Pekrul, owner of Aldershot Travel, to discuss everything from her passion for travel, her in depth knowledge and what a dream vacation might look like. The world is waiting and Aldershot Travel can get you there. 8

How did you got into this business? I was a stay at home mom with a son and daughter, which I loved, however once they started school, I wanted to get back into the working world. My husband and myself loved to travel so I thought that if I am going back to work, why not do something that I could be passionate about! Little did I know that we would own a travel agency!
You are the one stop for all things travel. What advice would you give someone looking to book a trip? I recommend coming into the office to meet with an agent and build a repour. Next, I suggest make sure you have an honest budget in mind. Give the agent as much information as possible about your wants/needs and let them know about any past travelling you’ve done so they can make recommendations based on past experiences and get a feel for your likes and dislikes. Don’t go to a number of agencies to see if you can save a few dollars, as agencies work with such low margins, so the days of “big discounts” are a thing of the past.
What separates you from your competition? Between Rosie and I, we have over 50 years of combined experience in the business. We are still in the business because we love what we do! With today’s technology, you can research everything online, however you can’t replace experience. Being a small agency in the community allows us to get to know our clients. When you start with an agent, you work with that same agent throughout the process. You don’t have to worry that you will be dealing with a number of people in the agency. There are so many options available that it can be overwhelming to a lot of people. We work with many suppliers to ensure that our clients’ needs are met. Travel is not “one shoe fits all,” so choosing the right property or cruise line is key. We do our best to match our clients with the right product. A happy client is a repeat client! Being able to walk into our agency and get oneon-one with Rosie or myself is very comforting to many of our clients. Especially for those clients that are new to our agency or to travel. Our job can be very challenging at times, however when a client comes back and tells us it was the trip of a lifetime we know we did our job! We have many repeat clients and that speaks volumes. Some of our clients have our personal cell phone numbers which is not the norm in a retail agency. We go that extra mile for every client!
Aldershot Travel offers a wide variety of services from destination weddings to private group tours. Where is the most popular destination that people travel to and why? The most popular destination would be the Caribbean Islands. Jamaica, Mexico and the Dominican Republic are the favorites for the majority of our Destination Wedding and corporate groups. Most wedding groups we work with try to keep the costs down for their guests, so the Caribbean is the natural choice.
Aldershot Travel has been operating since 1977. What are the keys to being a successful travel agency? Aldershot Travel has been in business since 1977. We purchased the agency from its previous owner in 2000 when she retired from the industry. Throughout the years, we have been through the ups and downs of the industry and at times it has been challenging. I think that being stubborn and passionate has kept us going. To quote Heraclitus, “the only thing that is constant is change.” This is so true of our industry! We strive to provide
Above: A photo from Barb’s recent trip to an Elephant sanctuary in Thailand
excellent service to our clients. Most people don’t realize how important it is to have a good agent until something goes wrong.
Where are your favourite places to travel in Canada? I have travelled to British Columbia, Alberta, Yellowknife, Quebec, Halifax, St. Johns Newfoundland, Ontario and they all offer different experiences. My favorite experience would have to be Yellowknife where we went dog sledding and saw the Aurora lights. This was an unforgettable experience!
If money were no object, what destinations would you recommend? How would you “WOW” me? There are so many great destinations available for those with unlimited funds. From world cruises that can cost up to $500,000 or a vacation in a tropical destination. Another destination that I would recommend is the Maldives, which is located in the Indian Ocean. It has some of the most spectacular beaches that have white powder sand and blue water. A private villa with Butler, cook would be a must. The prices of the villas vary and can go up to $35,000 per night. ■ aldershottravelburlington.com

SANTA Arrives in Style By Leslie Styles
In keeping with the city’s tradition, Santa arrived by helicopter at Burlington Centre Mall this past November among hundreds of eager fans. The chopper circled in the air several times, creating lots of excitement before finally landing to the delight of the crowd. Led by the Redcoats Teen Band, Jolly Old Saint Nicholas made his way through the crowds and then into the mall to meet with all the youngsters who were eagerly waiting to speak with him and get their picture taken. Santa will be at his workshop in the mall until December 24th. Please see burlingtoncentre.ca for information on Santa hours.
Salvation Army’s
KETTLE KICKOFF By Leslie Styles / Photography by David Joubarne
Game on! 99-year old Lil Utman dropped the puck at center ice to begin the 2019 Salvation Army’s Kettle Kickoff at Appleby Ice Centre on November 15th. This also began Friday night’s game between Burlington Cougars and the Georgetown Raiders. Accompanying Lil to centre ice was a crew of Salvationists and Salvation Army supporters including Major Jacobs, the Downhams, Fire Chief Lazenby, Deputy Mayor Kelvin Galbraith, Kettle Coordinator Laura Oros and son Daniel. Lil, who will celebrate her 100th birthday next June, is the Army’s number one soldier having helped start up the church in 1967. Remarkably, she participates with the choir, organizes square dancing nights, volunteers for the Kettles and also finds time to cheer on the Ticats, Blue Jays and Leafs.

LEST WE FORGET By Leslie Styles
On November 11th, thousands gathered in downtown Burlington to pay tribute to the brave soldiers who fought, many giving their lives, for the freedoms we have today. The first big snow of the season fell during the early morning Remembrance Service in Spencer Smith Park and continued throughout the day. Brant Street was blocked off at Baldwin for a short parade of veterans, police, cadets and the Teen Tour Band. An hour long ceremony, including laying of wreaths, took place at the Cenotaph just outside City Hall. It was a day to show our appreciation for all those who have stood on guard for us throughout history, preserving our precious freedom.

Season’s Greetings
I
From Burlington City Council Hello Aldershot friends!
From left to right: Councillor Angelo Bentivegna, Councillor Shawna Stolte, Mayor Meed Ward, Councillor Kelvin Galbraith, Councillor Lisa Kearns, Councillor Rory Nisan (missing, Councillor Paul Sharman.
I am happy to share that I will now be a regular contributor to this great local magazine. Burlington City council has been very busy this fall and I will highlight some of the things that I am working on in Ward 1.
I am advocating that Metrolinx expand their parking offerings that were planned back in 2016, as soon as possible. The plan back then was to add 900 new spots and then this was adjusted to 450.
Advocacy letter to Metrolinx - The parking situation at the Aldershot GO station needs to be addressed. My office has received numerous complaints from local residents that they cannot use this station after 8am as there is simply no parking available. Cars are often located on city side streets, grass curbs and islands, the 403 on-ramp and almost anywhere that you could fit a vehicle with 4 x 4. Evening events in Toronto where people want to go to the city early, are not possible as no parking is available. Hockey games, Raptor games and shows in Toronto are all attractions that people wish to use the GO train service to attend but are unable.
I would like to wish everyone a happy and safe holiday season this year. If you are looking to make any contributions or donations this holiday season, we have some great local charities that help those in need: The Compassion Society at 484 Plains Road East, Next Door Social Space at 650 Plains Road East and the Food bank at 1254 Plains Road East to name just a few.
