On December 3, Mayor Marianne Meed Ward, Burlington Councillors and Gift of Giving Back Chair, Jean Longfield, attended the official Flag Raising ceremony at Burlington City Hall to proudly proclaim Dec 1-8 as "The Gift of Giving Back Week" and kick-off the 'Help Us Feed Kids: Holiday Food Drive', which ran from December 3 through to December 20.

The results were nothing short of a Christmas miracle. One donation at a time, the community responded. Hundreds of high school volunteer hours were earned by students who collected donations. Thousands of compassionate young athletes and community members flooded their little storefront with bags and bags of food donations. And our healthcare heroes still took the time to make yet another remarkable difference in the community.

TOGETHER, THEY ACCUMULATED 68,000+ LBS AND $9,000 MONETARY DONATIONS FOR THEIR 6 BENEFICIARIES: The Salvation Army in Canada, Halton Women’s Place, Carpenter Hospice, Food for Life, Burlington Food Bank and Compassion Society.

The City of Burlington is PLEASED to ANNOUNCE

Karen Roche as FIRE CHIEF for Burlington

Chief Roche brings more than 24 years of progressive Fire service experience working in many facets of the emergency services. Most recently as Acting Fire Chief and prior to that Deputy Fire chief with the City of Burlington. This has afforded Karen a thorough understanding of the challenges of managing modern fire services during times of economic, demographic and community riskbased issues, including her role in the Emergency Control Group (ECG) during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The City of Burlington is committed to promoting access, equality, diversity and human rights through innovative policy, programs and services. Chief Roche is committed to contribute in a meaningful way to this through her appointments to the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC); International Diversity Executive Leadership Program (iDELP) and more recently the joint Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs (CAFC) / International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) appointment to the International Bullying Taskforce.

"Burlington City Council is very pleased to have Karen Roche as Fire Chief for our great city. Karen stepped in as interim-chief while our city continues to face a global pandemic as an integral member to our emergency response team. We look forward to her continued contribution to the City of Burlington and the Burlington Fire Department. Her years of fire services experience will continue to prove valuable to the city and our ongoing commitment to public safety." Mayor Marianne Meed Ward

he Canada Goose must really know how to keep warm in our cold winters since it has given its name to a world-famous winter coat company. The intricate layers of outer feathers are the first barrier to keep out the damp and cold. Splendor at

THE BPAC Article by Leslie Styles

The 4th Annual Festival of Trees adorned the lobby of the Burlington Performing Arts Centre during most of December. Ten artificial trees, generously donated by Canadian Tire, were sponsored and decorated by individual Burlington organizations such as Laurel Steel, PV&V Insurance, Royal Botanical Gardens and more.

All the trees were bid on in a silent auction. The trees were made more desirable by including gift cards, gift baskets, children’s toys, and other presents. One tree even offered a hot shave at The Barber Shop. The trees boasted ornaments, ribbons, crystals, sprays and giant feathers and all were beautiful and decorated with love. 10

NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA

After lighting up BPAC’s lobby for four weeks, these festive beauties were picked up by the silent auction winners just in time to grace their homes for the holidays. All proceeds went to BPAC’s Local Artist Development Initiative which provides performance opportunities and support for Burlington-based artists.

Making a difference in South Burlington BY JASON STACEY

What is Scholars? Scholars is a tutoring centre that provides comprehensive online and in-centre tutoring for all subject areas in the Kindergarten to Grade 12 curriculum. Our programs are created and customized by experts to suit each student’s unique learning style so they are able to navigate their school years successfully. We believe that worldclass curriculum and programming coupled with qualified, caring teachers lead to success, both inside and outside the classroom.

12

NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA

Why did you choose to open a Scholars franchise in Burlington?

What can your students expect from working with Scholars?

Burlington has always been a special place for both of us. Ryan was born and raised and I lived here for a couple of years when we played for the Hamilton Tiger Cats. We have always recognized how wonderful of a community Burlington is and wanted to be part of such a community that provides great programs and opportunities to its residents. When presented with the opportunity, we were excited to give back especially because we are providing opportunities here for our youth. There is nothing quite like working with students of any age to empower them with the end goal of making a difference in their lives. Our hopes are that when students walk in our doors, they know they are welcome, valued, and respected. They know that success occurs with hard work and our staff believes in them. It really has been awesome getting to know our students and working so closely with their families. We are excited to spread the word and look forward to growing as a franchise.

Our tutors, certified teachers, and qualified mentors have the experience to make curriculum engaging, effective and enjoyable for our students. We assist students and families in setting and achieving their educational goals by creating a lasting partnership. At Scholars, we take pride in truly knowing what each and every student needs in order to flourish and grow, both academically as a learner and personally as a student and child. We promise to assist students in developing the confidence they need to achieve their educational goals. Through grit and dedication, every student is capable of success and at Scholars, we believe each student will soar. What are some of your most popular classes? With online learning being such a prevalent part of education today, we are noticing that the need for in-centre instruction is quite high. Students are craving meaningful, face-to-face attention and we are

What are the different types of learning you provide? more than happy and prepared to assist them with this void. That being said, our classes range from Reading Readiness at the Kindergarten level, to Reading, Writing, Math and French in Grades 1-8. In addition, we provide Math, Science and English programs for high school students as well as SAT prep. At Scholars, we know that all students have different learning styles. Some students are auditory learners, while others are visual or kinesthetic learners. Our tutors carefully prepare for each session with the student’s specific learning style in mind. This intentionality sets us apart as programming is engaging and meaningful, which allows our learners to grow. We have many resources from our “Manipulative Shelf ” (e.g., sight word cards, base 10 blocks etc) which are used to assist students in grasping concepts and solidifying their skills as well. This hands on learning is invaluable and motivates our students to learn in many ways.

Talk to us about the ‘Proprietary Curriculum’? Our proprietary curriculum has been developed, maintained, and improved over the years by certified teachers and educational experts to ensure that it follows the provincial curricula and a methodology that ensures success for every student. What makes Scholars’ curriculum unique is our approach to learning. We know that students want to experience success and continue to progress and learn new concepts. We also know that students need repetition to reinforce and help retain concepts they’ve learned. Do you offer any complimentary sessions? We offer a FREE assessment for every child. This assessment allows our educators to see where in our program the student would begin their sessions with us. Each student will have his/her own unique curriculum to help them achieve their academic goals. School can feel like a chore for a lot of students. What are some of the ways you get kids interested? We have skilled tutors that understand the importance of making learning fun and engaging in order to create enjoyable experiences for students. When learning is fun, students develop a positive attitude and mindset towards education. This growth mindset can then transfer into their classes at school, which will help them succeed in many subject areas. Through games, activities, and unique instructional strategies, kids are able to stay focused and learn while still having fun! How has scholars adapted to the challenges brought on by the pandemic?

What are the Tutoring Programs you provide? We offer a Pre-K to K Reading Readiness Program, which teaches students phonics, reading comprehension, oral reading skills, spelling and sight word vocabulary. In Grades 1-8, students receive an individualized program based on their needs, which could be in Reading, Writing, Math or French. For the High School level, our programs are subject specific (e.g., Math, English, Science and French) and lastly, we also offer continued learning programs such as GED and SAT prep. At Scholars, we have programs for every age and every learner. We value all students and love that we get the opportunity to help students become the best version of themselves.

It definitely has been a challenging year for education all around. At Scholars, we have created online learning opportunities for students and families who feel most comfortable learning from the safety and comfort of their home. Our personalized curriculum and individualized instruction remains the same for online tutoring as it would if sessions ran in-centre. In addition to this, we have maintained up to date with all Public Health regulations, including inserting plexiglass dividers, temperature checks upon entry, disinfecting tables, wearing mandatory masks, sanitizing stations and maintaining proper social distancing. We will continue to work with our students, families and community to provide the best support for our learners. It is a challenging time for students of all ages. We promise to help our students navigate through this time by providing them with the necessary skills to thrive and achieve success.
