LASALLE PARK

MARINA By LESLIE STYLES

Burlington boaters, vital in keeping the spirit of our waterfront alive, look forward to Spring when the Lasalle Park Marina, slips in place, is ready for boat launching and boating action once again. The marina is depending on a new portable wave break this year, which Burlington council has voted in favour of supporting, but this motion awaits final approval in June. The present breakwater is aging, and totally inadequate to suppress severe waves. As a result of this, boats, equipment and infrastructure have already been damaged. Without the new anticipated breakwater, Burlington would be in danger of losing its beloved marina. Nevertheless, plenty of hikers tackled the waterfront trails at Lasalle Park Marina, some walking their puppies, and some just enjoying the spring-like weather and connecting with nature. neighbourhoodmagazine.ca

ST. PADDY’S PARTY AT PLUCKERS By LESLIE STYLES Pluckers Wing & Crab Shack called themselves the St. Patrick’s Headquarters of Aldershot. It certainly was the party place for many neighbours who had walked over to enjoy some green beer and camaraderie, dressed in their flashy garb. Festivities began at 11:00am and featured Irish food and drinks all day long. The highlight was the excellent performance by Irish dancers Hilary Nixon, Emma Hewitson and Brenna Timmins from the Wilson Bryson Dennis School of Dancing. The young ladies had a very busy schedule, ushered to Pluckers and various other venues around the city to help celebrate the special day. Prizes were won throughout the day for best-dressed as fresh green and glitzy costumes kept appearing on the scene.

Spotlight • Q&A

Q: HOW DID YOUR PASSION FOR FLOATATION THERAPY COME TO BE? I took my wife to a float centre in Toronto 3 years ago for her birthday. I would always take her to a spa of some kind and I was looking for something different. I didn’t really know anything about floating but it seemed like something that she would enjoy. She was also having some shoulder and back pain. After an hour in a float pod she was hooked. She looked like she was glowing when she came out. Her shoulder and neck pain were gone and she felt refreshed. We started doing some research on what floating was exactly. When we realized all the benefits floating had to offer we knew we had to bring this to our community. After 2 years of research and learning the ins and outs of the float industry we decided to pull the trigger and pick a location in Aldershot.

Q: WHY DID YOU WANT TO OPEN STILLWATER FLOAT CENTRE IN THE ALDERSHOT COMMUNITY?

StillWater Float Centre Let’s be honest, we are all looking for ways to decrease stress in our lives. Diet, sleep and physical activity have been known to help but have you considered FLOATING? Floatation therapy, also known as sensory deprivation therapy, has gained popularity over the last 10 years with overwhelming success in reducing stress, anxiety, depression and body pain. We sat down with StillWater Spa to discuss the benefits of floating and their passion for helping their clients achieve their health goals.

It’s time to FLOAT. 08

neighbourhoodmagazine.ca

We have called Aldershot home for the past 7 years. We have and still own and operate the Mr. Sub on Plains Rd. When we first came here we did not know anyone in the area. The one thing I noticed right away is the warmth and kindness from the people in the community. I knew this was a place we wanted to stay. We continued to connect and get involved with the community and the people. And as fate would have it we found our ideal location 1 block away from our existing business in the Jazz condo building.

Q: WHAT IS FLOTATION THERAPY AND WHY IT IS IMPORTANT? Floatation therapy is the practice of spending an hour or more floating in a pod that contains 10 inches of constantly heated water mixed with a 1000 pounds of therapeutic grade Epsom salt. Self care is something many people neglect. Family and work always become the priority and people simply forget to take care of themselves. Floating gives you a chance to block out all external stimuli and just be. You are floating in a zero gravity environment, which helps to decompress your body thru the joints

and spinal column. The density of the salt water puts you in an environment where approximately 80% of the gravity we usually feel is no longer affecting our body. We use a large portion of our energy counter acting the forces of gravity. When our bodies our relieved of this effort it is left with a surplus of energy that is then used on resting, recuperating and healing anything that needs attention.

Q: WHAT IS THE FLOAT PROCESS LIKE? You have your own private room with a shower. You start by taking a warm shower to wash the day away. As you lay back in the pod your body is supported by a thousand pounds of Epsom salt. The salt and weightlessness brings relief to aching muscles and joints. With the outside world removed, your mind is free to explore your inner self, solve problems and discover hidden creativity. After 60 minutes, soft music begins to play through the water and as you stretch you notice...you feel amazing. A hot shower awaits you. Once you have showered we encourage you to relax in our lounge area with a complimentary cup of tea, coffee or a cold bottle of water.

Q: WHAT EFFECTS DOES FLOATING HAVE ON THE MIND? The effects of floating on the mind are remarkable. The sensory deprivation slows your brain waves until they reach the theta state. This state is most common

during deep meditation or just before falling asleep and is usually combined with vivid imagery, very clear, creative thoughts, sudden insights and inspirations or feelings of happiness. This is all thanks to the release of endorphins, the body’s natural opiates. Floating has also been proven to relieve stress, anxiety and depression as well as increased sensory acuity, sleep schedule maintenance and manage PTSD.

Q: WHAT EFFECTS DOES FLOATING HAVE ON THE BODY? The effects of gravity on your bones, joints and muscles are completely removed while floating. This vastly improves your circulation and allows your body to rejuvenate and heal itself. Research shows that floating measurably reduces your blood pressure and heart rate while at the same time lowering stress levels. It calms your nervous system which provides deep relaxation as well as increased blood circulation, increased healing ability, muscle recovery, pain management, increased immune function and enhanced athletic training.

Q: HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE NAMED THE BEST SPA IN BURLINGTON BY THE READER’S CHOICE AWARDS 2019 AFTER ONLY BEING OPEN FOR 5 MONTHS? We feel honored and fortunate to have been able to reach so many people in

such a short period of time and it gives us the drive and motivation to continue working hard to educate as many people as we can to floating.

Q: WHAT IS A COMMON MISCONCEPTION ABOUT FLOTATION THERAPY? We’ve found that the main reason people are hesitant to try Float Therapy, is not the most common reason, which is ‘Claustrophobia’ but the idea of being enclosed, in the dark and not knowing where you are. The float rooms at Stillwater are equipped with pods. At 5.5 feet wide, eight feet long, and over 4 feet high, they ensure that nobody gets claustrophobic during their session. The rooms are sound proof and light proof so the pod lids can be left open if need be. What’s more, they don’t even have to be in the dark. It doesn’t HAVE to be total sensory deprivation. With optional music and multicolored LED lights, clients can create their own custom mood with the option of guided mediation. There is also an intercom that you can communicate with staff whenever you want. The pod is a safe, well-ventilated space that’s easy to exit. The pod lid pushes open easily from the inside and there’s no latch that could lock you in. You are in complete control of your environment. Plus, fresh air circulates into and out of the pod through a ventilation system, ensuring that the pod does not get too stuffy.

Q: WHAT SEPARATES YOU FROM YOUR COMPETITION? What sets us apart in this growing field is our passion for community involvement, floating and overall wellness. At Stillwater we don’t just want to offer a service... we want to educate our clients and help them achieve their goals within floating. We are safe place where people can unwind and relax. We are also great listeners when you need someone to talk to. Building lasting relationships with our clients, community organizations and other small businesses in our local area is a big part of who we are. We are working to offer the best possible service and to raise awareness about flotation therapy and it’s multitude of benefits. ■ neighbourhoodmagazine.ca

FOOD CHOICES FOR YOUR CHILDREN By LAURENT PINCI - PILLARS OF WELLNESS

The eating habits you receive in childhood are always used as a basis. What we tend to eat as kids affect brain development, metabolism, and overall health. So, what does good nutrition for kids look like? PARENTING WITH A HEALTHY NUTRITION DIET IN MIND When it comes to raising children, it can be overwhelming for some. What about good nutrition? Most children dislike vegetables, fish and other nutrients that does not fit within the pasta family. So where do you start? Well, begin with simple basics. • Avoid processed foods and select whole foods. • Include vegetables and fruits in children’s daily diet. • Add vitamins and minerals if necessary. But try to get nutrients from a complete and varied diet. • Help young kids regulate their cravings and hunger suppression. 12

neighbourhoodmagazine.ca

• Take the initiative. You are the parent. • Adopt healthy habits so that young people have a role model for their own behaviour.

WHAT SHOULD YOU PREPARE FOR SCHOOL LUNCHES?

Children want healthy fats in their diet. Young people develop deficiencies that can cause problems with the wrong fats. These include problems with growth, vision, body composition, blood lipids, and brains. If kids tolerate eggs (some are allergic), make sure to use whole eggs. They have the necessary fats and vitamin B complex, a nutrient essential for brain development.

2) FULL-FAT DAIRY A dairy product full of fat and coconut could be a good source of healthy saturated fats. Crush a coconut, kids often find that to be fun. Or use coconut milk or unsweetened coconut flakes in dishes. You can even use coconut flour during cooking.

3) SUBSTITUTIONS Replacements can provide a less processed lunch. Explore your kid’s daily menu to see where you can add healthier substitutes for processed foods. Some classic parent tips: • Dilute drinks with water • Mix flavored yogurt with plain yogurt • Substitute flavored milk with plain milk

4) FRUITS & VEGETABLES Adding fruits and vegetables is another nice and easy way to improve nutrition for kids. Fruits and vegetables are essentially handy nutrient containers. They provide the necessary nutrients that growing bodies desire.

5) VITAMINS & MINERALS

1) DIETARY FATS

Nutrient-poor foods consumed instead of nutrient-rich foods will cause a nutrient deficiency. So, a lot of kids do not get enough nutrients from their diet with junk food consumption. Supplements of vitamins and minerals may be helpful in this case. They can help build kids’ psychological characteristics and boost their physical activity.

These fats help the absorption of vitamins by young kids. They satisfy them and make them happy when they eat. And they are necessary to produce hormones.

Clinics specialized in nutrition or offer naturopathic services such as Pillars of Wellness, in Aldershot can guide you. So, don’t be afraid to ask for help! ■

It may seem hard, but the good news is that your kids can follow a varied diet with healthier school lunches. It mainly contains whole foods with healthy carbohydrates, lean proteins, and reasonable fats.

BURLINGTON LEGION

GOES IRISH By LESLIE STYLES

The Burlington Legion was hopping on St. Paddy’s Day with their annual festivities. Guests were dressed to the nines with green flashing hats, ties, necklaces and so on. After a Maggie and Jigs dinner of corned beef and cabbage, guests enjoyed an auction, a comedian, Irish dancers, and the music of the “Celtic Connection.” This band plays Celtic music for local community groups and provides sing-along lyric books to promote audience interaction. Mike Wallace was the emcee for the evening. He, wife Caroline, and many other volunteers extended warm hospitality to all visitors.

The annual St. Patrick’s celebration is a fundraiser for The Legion to aid in their support of minor sports, military veterans and various local charities. A great get together for lots of Irish fun!
