ALDERSHOT BIA MAKES PUBLIC ART HAPPEN By Rick Craven ■ Mural by Vivian Rosas
A new piece of public art on Plains Road is designed to celebrate and support Aldershot's main street. The two-piece mural promotes the longstanding community goal of transforming the former highway into an attractive, interesting and complete street, a goal known locally as the Plains Road Village Vision. The mural was formally unveiled this week. It was prepared by Toronto artist Vivian Rosas. It makes use of images depicting the history and changing landscape of Plains Road. The artwork is located on the west wall of the Fitness Firm building on the north side of Plains Road West near Waterdown Road. The space was donated by Councillor Kelvin Galbraith who owns the building. “They asked me to donate the wall because it has good visibility heading into our BIA from the west and it shows well to the drive-through line-up at Tim Hortons as a visual, something to look at”, commented Galbraith.
"WE LOVE HOW VIVIAN HAS CAPTURED THE EVER-CHANGING LANDSCAPE OF PLAINS ROAD, OUR HISTORY WITH THE DAIRY QUEEN, THE BUSINESS MIX, SHOPPING, CYCLING AND GENERAL ENJOYMENT THAT OUR COMMUNITY OF ALDERSHOT BRINGS", said the BIA in a news release.
The new mural is the latest in a series of public art pieces in Aldershot including: stainless steel sculptures on Plains Road East known as “Dwelling”, a polished stainless-steel sculpture at Waterdown Road known as “Crescendo”, a digital mural called “Escarpment Evolution” on the King Road underpass and several historic photo art pieces on utility boxes across Plains Road.
The mural is the result of an initiative by the Aldershot Village Business Improvement Area (BIA) and Galbraith. Financial support came from the “I HeART Main Street Challenge” program, which supports BIAs across Ontario.

STEP 1 / In a large dutch oven or saucepan heat oil over medium heat. Add the onions and sauté until translucent, and stirring often about 2-3 minutes.
• 1 onion, diced • 2 cups sliced mushrooms • 2 cups quartered brussels sprouts • 3/4 cup barley • 1 cup packed chopped fresh spinach • 6 cups vegetable stock • 2 bay leaves • 1/4 tsp pepper • 1/2 tsp salt
STEP 2 / Add the mushrooms and brussels sprouts. Cook, stirring often until mushrooms are tender and the brussels sprouts are beginning to soften, roughly 4-5 minutes.
STEP 3 / Add the barley. Cook, stirring for 1 minute. Add the vegetable stock, plus an additional 2 cups of water.
STEP 4 / Add seasoning and bay leaves, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer covered for 1 hour and 20 minutes. Check the barley for doneness – it should be el dente. Charity Bike Nights were held every second Wednesday from May through October at Uptown Social House on Walkers Line. Organized by Sue Stitch, these were charity events to support and honour the "Compassion Society of Halton" during these difficult pandemic times. Bikers entered their 'wheels' into competition. Prizes were awarded in several categories such as Best Chopper, Best Chrome, Best Paint, and more. Other action included door prizes, games, and a 50/50 draw. There was lots of fun, great food and music. All bikes were welcome to enter. Angels of Awareness Laura, Debbie, and Corey-Anne all came out to lend their support.
Socials
"Join us even if you don't have a bike," welcomed organizer Sue Stitch. "Or even if you don't know what a Cruiser, Chopper, Sportster or Trike is. You'll have a great time supporting the Compassion Society of Halton."

The final Bike Night event was held on October 20 and included a BBQ and other surprises. Donny Petersen, author of several motorbike books, was there for to sign copies of his new book, 'The Milwaukee-Eight'. There was a Show 'N' Shine for Motorcycles. Entry was $10, with all the funds going to the Compassion Society of Halton. Blues Hall of Famer, James Anthony made an appearance as well as Leroy Emmanuel, Marvin Gaye's lead guitarist and best friend growing up.
It was an awesome closing night, with a special guest, Jessey the Elf, delivering trophies! This was a family event with Kids able to pose for photos with the Elf on a very cool Motorcycle. Compassion Society of Halton was there to accept the money that was raised through these amazing bike events. The Society will put the funds to great use responding to community needs for food, clothing and household articles.

Throughout the past 2 years, in addition to our fall purse campaign, The Purse Project Network has reached out to those in need in our communities in unique ways - running a Gift card drive and donating Mother’s day "pamper purses" to a local charity. We also continued to bless shut-in seniors with our Cards of Blessing.
PURSE PROJECT NETWORK: FILL A PURSE WITH LOVE AND A WOMAN'S HEART WITH HOPE Article by Gayla Matos & Jill MacKellar
SINCE ITS INCEPTION IN 2016, THE PURSE PROJECT HAS BEEN PROVIDING WOMEN WITH HOPE AND DIGNITY THROUGH A DONATED PURSE FILLED WITH ESSENTIAL PERSONAL CARE ITEMS. More than 7,000 purses have passed from donors to The Purse Project and then on to various organizations that serve women in need across Ontario. Organizations include street missions, women’s emergency shelters, transitional housing 10

services, sexual assault victims services and a women's prison. Full-time caregivers, single moms, unwed pregnant teens, senior women, teenage girls, refugees and low-income women have also received purses. In January 2020, Gayla Matos and Jill MacKellar took over the directorship of this initiative, renaming it The Purse Project Network to allow for more flexibility in serving the community, and fall 2020 saw a new Chapter start up in the Niagara region.
During this challenging time of Covid, the need for support and care continues to be greater than ever. The Purse Project Network team have big dreams to help meet those needs through the Fall Purse Collection Campaign, with plans to continue efforts of collecting donated purses during the month of November 2021. This year we hope to support 18 organizations in the Halton/Hamilton area and we have a very ambitious goal to collect over 1000 purses to fulfill the need! A list of these organizations is on our Facebook page.
HOW CAN YOU HELP? • Volunteers are needed as follows: pickng up donations from drop-off locations, helping with quality control checking of all donations, and delivering the donated purses to local charities. • Follow and SHARE - The Purse Project Network Facebook page to stay updated with information about the fall campaign. • Fill a new or gently used purse with NEW personal care items following the list below, then drop it off to one of the drop-off locations • Volunteer to write messages of encouragement in our Cards of Blessing
NEW FOR 2021
THE CAMPAIGN WILL RUN FROM NOVEMBER 1-30, WITH DROP-OFF LOCATIONS TO BE POSTED ON OUR FACEBOOK PAGE AT THE END OF OCTOBER. Organizations we donate to have asked for specific items to be included in the donated purses, so we are requesting that all purses include "10 Essential Items" and these must be NEW ITEMS ONLY. This will ensure that every purse donated contains the same basic items. Additional items can also be added to the purses, should the donor desire to give extra products (the FB page will list the "suggested optional items"). Every donated purse has one of our hand-made, hand-written Cards of Blessing added to it as an extra special touch of care for the women who receive the purses. It is important that the purses donated are NEW or GENTLY used and in excellent condition. We are committed to providing women with purses they can be proud of!
10 Essential Items to include in your donated purse: 1 ◆ DEODORANT 2 ◆ TOOTHBRUSH 3 ◆ TOOTHPASTE 4 ◆ MITTS OR GLOVES 5 ◆ HAT OR SCARF 6 ◆ SOCKS 7 ◆ SHAMPOO or 2-in-1 shampoo/conditioner 8 ◆ BODY WASH or bar of soap with a plastic holder

TO THE GLAZE OIL SOCIETY By Leslie Styles ■ Photography by David Joubarne
This amazing group – the Canadian Glaze Oil Society with extreme artistic talent, are opening their arms to welcome new members. Painting together only a few years, they formed a national, inclusive group of artists that work together, mentor and enjoy each other’s company, encouraging professional growth and opportunities. Glaze oil painting, a rarely taught technique that began with the Old Masters of the Renaissance, involves the use of specific light-reflecting paints to increase depth and intensify colours.

Currently, the ladies hold a weekly painting session (on Zoom, since the Pandemic). Throughout the year, the group have various parties, lunches and exhibits promote their work with the latest held at The Hub at Burlington Centre Mall this past October. They offer classes to teach glaze painting to beginner, intermediate and advanced levels.
During their latest exhibit, glaze artist Vanessa Cress Lokos generously offered several painting tips as she brushed colour on her canvas. "If your subject is on an iPad, look, you can zoom right in to get those minute details," she demonstrated. She also showed how to use grid lines for accurate proportions and other interesting pointers. The Canadian Glaze Oil Society (CGOS) currently has over twenty proud members and describe their group as "painters who dance with colour - spectacular colour."

Downtown's
"POPPING" WITH COLOUR By Leslie Styles ■ Photography by Burlington Downtown Business Association
It’s not just autumn leaves adding colour to the city of Burlington. A brand new, eye-catching mural on John Street in the downtown core recently sprang up to the delight of the community.
Samantha Statham of the Downtown Burlington BIA commissioned artist Chris Perez to colour things up and was very excited about breathing new life into this.
"THIS HAS ALWAYS BEEN ON OUR WISH LIST," EXPLAINED SAM. "WE LOVE THE FINAL RESULT." This spray-paint project was sparked by a Toronto program called 'Sustainable Thinking and Expression in Public Spaces' or STEPS for short. The program provides grants to beautify Ontario cities. With things being sad and grim during the pandemic, STEPS matches artists with communities to create vibrant and picturesque artwork in public spaces. Mural artist Chris Perez was assisted by Burlington resident Aiden Kenny for this project. Perez's murals focus on personal and cultural identity. Next time you’re downtown, check out the large floral spray-painting on John Street signed at the top by Chris P. 14
