PROPERTY BROTHERS Book Signing By Leslie Styles

Drew and Jonathan, the charismatic and popular stars of the hit HGTV show, ‘Property Brothers’ drew a huge crowd to their recent book signing of their children’s story, ‘Builder Brothers: Better Together’ at a local Indigo where they read from their new book, posed for photos and signed autographs. ‘Builder Brothers: Better Together’, is the heart warming story of Jonathon and Drew as they compete in their town’s soap box derby. The book is the second in the Builder Brothers series. “Like our first book, ‘Builder Brothers: Big Plans’, this book draws from our experiences growing up in Canada,” Drew said. “There was always a bit (or a lot!) of brotherly competition between us, which pushed us to be better, just like the brothers in the book.” After thrilling fans in various Ontario cities, the brothers continued the book tour into the States.

dull or painful squeeze on either side of the head. These headaches can last from minutes to days in severe cases. The pain typically begins in the back of the head and travels to the sides of the head. These headaches can be brought on by stress, anxiety, fatigue and weather.

Cervicogenic Headaches

Migraine vs. Headache

How can Chiropractic Help Most of us have suffered from the pounding, throbbing pain of a headache at least once in our life. For some, the affects are minor and a Tylenol is enough to help with the pain. Unfortunately, for those who suffer from chronic headaches, a small pill isn’t enough and the pain can seriously affect their overall health and wellbeing. More often these days, people come to our clinic with complaints of headaches. Headaches can be caused by a variety of things including over activity, problems with pain-sensitive structures, our diet and even our lifestyle. For some, structures of the skull and neck, like nerves, joints and muscles, can all play a role in their headaches. Not sure what type of headache you suffer from?

Here is a list of the most common types of head pain: 6

NeighbourhoodMagazine.ca

Migraine Headaches Migraines typically start off as a weak dull ache but then can become very sharp. Millions of people suffer from migraines every year and they can start happening to people before the age of 30. The most common pain that people suffer with migraines is an intense throbbing and pulsating pain on one side of the head that can worsen when moving. Migraines can last anywhere from hours to even days. Side effects of migraines include nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and noise. Research has also shown that 20% of people experiencing a migraine will also get an aura which is seeing wavy lines, dots or flashing lights.

Tension Headaches The most common type of headaches experienced by children and adults is tension type headaches. These headaches are described as a tightening,

These are headaches are caused by a musculoskeletal dysfunction within the upper neck area, sometimes causing neck pain. The pain associated with cervicogenic headaches can be triggered or worsened by neck movements. Typically this type of headache recreates pain on one side of the head and can start from the base of the skull and spread to the front of the head and even into the back of the eye.

Cluster headaches Cluster headaches are characterized as sharp, non-throbbing pain experienced behind the eyes. It can happen several times throughout the day and come in groups, hence the “cluster” description. The symptoms of the headaches include tearing of the eye, bloodshot eyes, runny nose and pain on the side of the head. Thankfully, chiropractic treatments have been proven to be effective against many common types of head pain. As chiropractors we can assess, diagnose and manage headaches. Chiropractor care can be an effective treatment for cervicogenic and tension-type headaches. Studies have also demonstrated that chiropractic care can decrease the intensity and frequency of migraines. Depending on the assessment, we can recommend patient reassurance, manual therapies, modalities and lifestyle recommendation including rehabilitation. Don’t suffer any longer. Let Pillars of Wellness help you get back to a pain free life.

WITH

J&G MEATS’ PETER BAARDA If you have a leak in your home, you call a plumber. If you’re car needs repairs, you see a mechanic. If you have a dinner party for 8, you go see Peter Baarda, owner and Butcher of J&G Quality Meats.

Peter, a three-time champion of the ‘Ontario’s Finest Butcher’ competition, has been a butcher for over 30 years and his expertise is second to none. We sat down with the champ to discuss his passion for butchering, his Dry-Aged program and what the future holds for J&G.

8

NeighbourhoodMagazine.ca

Why did you want to become a butcher?

I actually became a butcher by accident. I had just finished high school and happened to be on vacation with Peter Hogeterp, who was the owner of Hogeterp Meats in Cayuga. He asked what my plans were in the fall, by the end of the conversation I had agreed to come work for him and learn the trade while I figured out what I wanted to do with my life. It’s now been 28 years since I first put a knife in my hand and have been butchering ever since.

Above: Peter Baarda in his shop

You took ownership of J&G Quality Meats in 2016. What attracted you to the J&G Butcher Shop? I had interest in opening my own shop one day. J&G happened to be for sale and was in a desirable location and had been updated to OMAFRA standards. Basically, all I was interested in was the shell, but surprisingly what I got was a long-standing tradition of Aldershot heritage and a good reputation to live up to. I’ve heard from people who have shopped at J&G for generations and continue to come in. They speak of parents and grandparents coming to fill their freezers with sides of beef and pork.

Tell us about your Dry Aged Program? We started the Dry Aged Program when we first took over and it’s been a hit with our customers ever since. We generally try to dry age our steaks for 6 weeks on the

whole primal. It helps intensify the flavour and break down the tissues in the meat, resulting in optimum tenderness.

Previous owner, Peter Smolenaars stayed on with you after you had purchased the business from him. What lessons have you learned from him that has helped you in your business? I was very fortunate to have Peter stick around following the sale. He is a wealth of knowledge concerning meat and life in general. I feel that he and I share a bond of one generation passing what they have worked very hard on to the next. We may have different styles, but our end result is the same, provide a great quality product at a fair price.

J&G Quality Meats has been around since 1962. What aspects of the business remains from its infancy? The meat industry has changed dramatically since J&G’s inception in 1962, but what remains is the commitment to quality and community. The whole reason that I didn’t change the name was to pay homage to its longevity in the community and to the hard-working butchers before me, who helped shape what J&G Quality Meats is today.

The local butcher shop has changed over the years. What trends do you see now in the industry that weren’t there five years ago? Local butcher shops are becoming more prevalent in Canadian communities. People enjoy knowing where their food comes from and the

people they are purchasing it from. We try very hard to create a relationship with our customers and build a bond of trust, that what they’re preparing for their loved ones will be a great experience. Sharing a meal, whether it’s a special holiday or just a routine weekday dinner, it’s important to us that we provide you with the best possible ingredients.

Sacramento, California in 2020. There, you have a team of 6 butchers from their respective countries cut against teams from all over the world. You have three hours to merchandise a side of beef, pork, a lamb and five chickens. The World Butcher Challenge is held every two years. It helps celebrate butchery and bring light to a craft that is often overlooked as a viable career.

You are representing Canada in the next World Butcher’s Challenge? Tell us about that?

What qualities are important in a good butcher?

I’m very excited about it. This will be Canada’s first ever team to compete in the challenge which is taking place in

A good butcher has a passion for food and a passion to help their customer pick the appropriate cut of meat for the meal they’re going to serve. I always look at the meat that we sell as being the centrepiece of the table, when someone is entertaining. I ask myself if I would be happy to have that steak or that roast be shared with my guests.

What is it about J&G that customers keep coming back? I believe people keep coming back for a number of reasons. We source the best possible products to put in our counters every day, deal with local farmers and abattoirs and always try to present something new to try. Our staff is always friendly, there to assist you with your purchase and will try to answer any questions you may have. ■

Burlington

HOME SHOW By Leslie Styles

The 22nd annual Burlington Home Show returned to the Mainway Arena in September where visitors were able to speak with dozens of experts and receive professional advice and services from some of the best local companies. New this season was the Workshop zone, which included the Golden Horseshoe Woodturners Guild who demonstrated their woodturning expertise. The Canadian Raptor Conservancy returned this season with Birds of Prey, a show filled with wildlife including eagles, hawks, owls, and more.

Applefest at

IRELAND HOUSE By Leslie Styles

Museums of Burlington presented Applefest, an old fashioned country fair in the heart of the city on the grounds of the Ireland House museum. Thousands of visitors enjoyed pony rides, face painting, petting baby chinchillas, feeding farm animals and so much more. There was an animal mask craft, silent auction, an artisan market and lots and lots of free, crispy apples. Of course, the Ireland House Museum remained open for visitors to explore the house, adding some history to the autumn festivities.

10th Annual

HOPE IN HIGH HEELS By Leslie Styles

It was a lesson in humility at the 10th Annual ‘Hope in High Heels’ walk at Emma’s Back Porch on September 21st in support of Halton Women’s Place, which provides a safe haven, information and education to support a future without abuse for women and their children. Boys and men strapped on pink heels for a short walk to demonstrate a BIG statement – WE ARE PART OF THE SOLUTION. Despite their sore feet, the boys persevered and gingerly walked around in their high heels for the cause. If you are considering participating next year, all pink high heels are provided and all walkers get a free lunch and lots of laughs while supporting this important cause.
