Celebrating
JOSEPH BRANT By Leslie Styles
Celebrated in Lasalle Park, August 5th was Joseph Brant Day as proclaimed by the city of Burlington. Jo Brant, the famous Mohawk Chief, was one of Burlington’s original settlers during the early 1800s. Visitors to the park enjoyed live performances; The Eagle Flight Singers and Dancers, Chinese Performing Arts Society, and Caribbean Steel Drummer, to name a few. There were numerous children’s activities including trampolines, the steam zone, water relay races, and so much more. There was a large market of local vendors and a food truck rally. Perogies from the ‘Stuffed’ food truck were a popular choice.

Cruising for a
CAUSE By Leslie Styles
On July 9th, Team Bullock Remax Real Estate hosted the 4th annual Cruising for a Cause in the Royal Botanical Gardens parking lot. They sold items and encouraged donations to raise funds for the Green Angels. The Green Angels’ RBG Program, Growing Up Green, provides children with the gift of nature by enabling free education, admission and transportation to youngsters who may not otherwise be able to enjoy RBG field trips. There was a great nostalgic line-up to be admired. The French’s Volkswagen Beetles from the 70s were displayed with A&W trays latched on to the windows, holding fries and root beer. There was a ‘black cherry’ ‘69 Camaro with a gorgeous underlying red. David Craig displayed an 85 Thunderbird equipped with a vintage Motorola phone. The display of all these beauties made for a very enjoyable evening of ‘Cruising’.

Freedom Day
FESTIVAL By Leslie Styles
“This is Halton’s 3rd annual Freedom Day Festival, which celebrates emancipation in 1834, ending slavery,” explains Dennis Scott, Chair of the Halton Black History Awareness Society. Ontario was a beacon of hope to those travelling along the Underground Railroad, a welcome home to freed slaves searching for sanctuary north of the border. The Halton Freedom Festival was all about history, culture and inclusiveness. Held at Spencer Smith Park, the event featured children’s activities, art, food trucks, and crafts. There were vendors tents and cultural heritage groups and live music. Further info about Halton Black History Awareness can be found at hbhas.ca.

What inspired you to become a Real Estate Agent? I come from a family of builders and real estate investors, so it seemed like a natural career path. Throughout my university years, I was in sales and really enjoyed and excelled at it.
What separates you from your competition?
I pride myself on my extensive knowledge of the real estate market and the personal approach we take to every single transaction.
What is one piece of advice you’d give to someone who is thinking of selling their home?
Definitely hire an expert who understands your market place and understands and respects your needs.
I’ve read many of your reviews and people couldn’t be more pleased with your services. What does that mean to you?
It means everything! I take great pride in what I do and much of my business comes from happy clients who have referred me. My clients are my clients for life, not just for that one transaction.

You are a lifetime resident of the greater Burlington area. How has that helped you when selling homes? Growing up in Burlington is definitely an advantage because you’re selling what you know so well.
What is the key to being a successful realtor?
I feel honesty and integrity have been the foundation of my success. I treat my clients biggest investment as I do my own.
What is the most rewarding part about being a realtor?
When you see your clients so happy after a successful transaction, it makes you feel so good that you were included in such a big part of their life. It really is an honor.
You are an avid supporter of the continued economic and social development of the local community. Why is your community so important to you? I plan on living here the rest of my life. My family and friends are all here. I love this city and the people in it. They are my greatest supporters.

Vintage Car
SHOW By Leslie Styles
Brant street was blocked off on July 6th to host an impressive exhibit of cars. From classics, exotics, hot rods, to muscle cars, Brant Street merchants saw lots of activity. Some held sidewalk sales, specials and kids’ activities for the large crowd of car enthusiasts in support of the local Lions Club. Car owners were friendly and took delight in talking about their vehicles. There was a beautiful blue replica of the 1965 Shelby AC Cobra Racer and a replica of Steve McQueen’s Mustang from the movie “Bullitt.” However, not all of the vehicles were vintage. There was a 2007 Saturn Sky, a lightweight car with lifting doors, 325 horsepower and 360 lb-ft of torque. About 150 cars lined Brant Street.

The Enchanted
GARDEN By Leslie Styles
August 3rd-5th was Enchanted Garden weekend at RBG’s Rock Garden. Magic and fairy dust were in the air as pixies, fairies, gnomes, and sprites gathered for a number of wondrous activities. Costumed little people got their faces painted, ate hot dogs, made their own magic wands, listened to fairy tales and sent a note to a friend via the pixie post office. Larger-than-life flowers, ribbons, and butterflies lined the garden pathways. Guests, young and old, seemed to love every minute of it and many were return visitors from previous years.

impleMARINADED SCUCUMBER SALAD Cucumber salad gets better as it sits. Make this several hours ahead of time and leave it at room temperature. It will last several days in the fridge. I love serving this with grilled meat, chicken, fish or burgers. The flavours are super simple and go with just about everything! Serves 8.
INGREDIENTS
DIRECTIONS
• 1 English cucumber
STEP ONE: Using a knife, slicer on a food processor or mandolin, slice the cucumber into 3mm slices. Place slices in a medium-size mixing bowl.
• 1/4 cup rice vinegar • 1 tsp sesame oil • 1 tsp honey or sugar • 1/2 tsp kosher salt • 1 tbsp toasted black and white sesame seeds
STEP TWO: Drizzle the vinegar and oil over the cucumbers, sprinkle with the honey and salt, mix and toss together very well. Sprinkle with sesame seeds, toss. STEP THREE: Let marinate at room temp for about 30 minutes or longer before serving. Toss again before serving. ◆

Easterbrook’s
FAMOUS HOTDOGS By Leslie Styles
It’s easy to believe Easterbrook’s has sold over 1600 miles of hotdogs and over a million pounds of ice cream since its opening in the olden days. A Burlington legend, this famous hotdog establishment has been selling its footlongs since 1930. Tucked in behind the RBG building on Spring Garden Rd, Easterbrook’s is a hidden treasure, quickly identified by the crowd of customers waiting to sample any of the 22 hotdog varieties available, burgers or ice cream. The building, from the 1920s, once shared its space with the Willow Cove Post Office, and was quite the popular meeting place for locals to gather and share the latest gossip. A visit to Easterbrook’s is a stroll into the past with its black, red and white wall tiles, black and white tiled floor, and red stools. The booths are covered with the initials of hundreds of dreamy-eyed lovers, who had carved hearts into the tables, some decades ago, to declare their undying love for each other. The shooting game and pinball machine inside the front door, are leftovers from the fifties. The ceiling is plastered with business cards and the walls, with autographed photos of the famous people who have enjoyed the ambiance here. Signed pictures of Martin Short, Jim Carey and Red Green grace the wall behind the cash register. There have been a couple of motion pictures made on site, such as Red Green’s Duct Tape Forever and the Terry Fox movie. Ex Maple Leaf, Doug Gilmour, a nearby neighbour, pops in for a bite every once in a while. If you’re lucky enough to speak with Blake, the fourth generation owner of Easterbrooks, he will tell you about his dad Ray, his Grandma Irene and his Great Grandma Mabel, who originally began the business as a tea room in the late 1920s. Blake is toying with some new ideas for Easterbrooks but will not sacrifice the preservations of the past. There may just be an ‘invent a new hot dog’ contest, according to Blake, so you may want to start thinking of different ways to jazz up a weenie.
