PREP TIME 5 minutes | COOK TIME 5 minutes | SERVES 9

• 1/4 cup (62.5 mL) melted salted butter • 1/4 cup (62.5 mL) melted butter, cooled for 5 minutes • 1/2 cup (100 g) sugar • 3 egg yolks • 1 whole egg • 1/3 cup (83 mL) lemon juice • 2 tbsp (30 mL) lime juice

DID YOU KNOW THAT SUGAR AND SPICE MAKE DESSERTS OH SO NICE? A bit of heat is a surprisingly delicious complement to sugar. If your sweet tooth starts nagging you mid-evening, you’ll want something quick that’ll satisfy that craving. These easy-peasy jalapeño, lemon and lime squares can be made from scratch in under five minutes, using only your microwave. They pack a punch and are guaranteed to hit the spot.

• 1 tsp (5 mL) Tabasco Green sauce • 1 tbsp (6 g) lemon and lime zest

DIRECTIONS STEP 1: For the Crust: Microwave 1/4 cup butter and mix together with graham cracker crumbs. Press firmly onto bottom of 9”, microwave-safe dish, lined with parchment paper. Cook in microwave at 80% power for 3 minutes. Check to make sure the crust is firm. If not, heat an additional 30 seconds. Set aside.

STEP 2: In a separate microwave-safe bowl, mix 1/4 cup melted butter, sugar, egg yolks and egg until well combined. Whisk in lemon and lime juice, Tabasco Green sauce, zests and lemon juice together. STEP 3: Microwave in 1-minute intervals, stirring after each minute. Finish with 30-second intervals when it starts to thicken, until the mixture is thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. STEP 4: Pour lemon curd over crust. Let cool, then refrigerate for several hours or overnight. STEP 5: Cut into squares and enjoy.

Labour Day RIBFEST at Burlington Centre Mall By Leslie Styles

8

NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA

LABOUR DAY RIBFEST was just as mouthwatering as ever this year, but done much differently. The Rotary Club’s new Drive-Thru Ribfest took place on September 7th at Burlington Centre Mall’s parking lot rather than the classic party in Spencer Smith Park. Only vehicles were permitted ensuring social distancing guidelines were met.

Grills were fired up as huge lines of waiting cars held hungry guests who ordered ribs, chicken, pulled pork, coleslaw, beans and cornbread from one of four award-winning vendors including Camp 31, Billy Bones, Pistol Pete’s Smokehouse, and Silver Bullet BBQ. East Side Mario’s and Blaze Pizza were open as well, providing guests with alternate options to suit every possible taste. A fundraising initiative of Rotary Burlington Lakeshore, the Ribfest also included live music by the James Anthony Band, inductees into the USA Blues Hall of Fame.

Talk to us about the importance of living a ‘Wellness Lifestyle’? >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

10

NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA

There is no single strategy to promote a Wellness Lifestyle; instead, it encompasses many approaches of improving or maintaining not only physical health, but also emotional and mental health. ‘Self-care’ seems to be the latest buzzword popping up over the past few years, but it truly highlights what generates a wellness lifestyle. Too often we are consumed with the ‘busy-ness’ of life that we forget to take time for ourselves, and that can lead to trouble. When we determine elements of your lifestyle that are barriers to your wellness, we can come up with strategies and lifestyle changes to correct those barriers and promote optimal health. Setting yourself up with great nutrition, exercise, and mental health habits help to ensure you are resilient to life’s curveballs. If wellness becomes a part of your routine, you can’t forget about it! Describe to our readers what preventative medicine is? Preventative medicine involves taking steps to improve your state of health BEFORE you get ‘sick’. So many individuals wait until

something is wrong before they seek medical attention, essentially travelling the path to ‘sick’-care, not healthcare. But by taking control of your body now, you can find ways to either stop illness/injury in its tracks, or slow its development/ progression. Wellness practitioners encourage their patients to be proactive about their health and seek early intervention. In other words, “don’t wait until you are sick to get healthy!” What can a new patient expect when walking through your doors? What is the first step in starting their journey? We offer a friendly, safe, comfortable space where patients can be heard and where hope can be generated. Keep an open mind. We are here to help and guide you through your journey wherever it might lead. The first step is identifying what you hope to accomplish with therapy, and setting small, realistic goals; those goals can change throughout your course, but it is our job to keep you on the path to achievement.

Talk to us about your team and how you all compliment one another? The goal of our multi-disciplinary team is to provide whole-body natural wellness in a “one stop shop”, where patients can address all their needs in one place. Our practitioners each provide a unique perspective on health and wellness with their particular specialty; collectively, patients can then receive the best care from the most appropriate practitioner. The body is very much interconnected and at times problems on the outside can manifest from problems on the inside, and vice versa. For example, Chiropractic is a great resource for treating low back problems but sometimes gut health can create low back pain. This can be addressed with Naturopathic Medicine (Acupuncture, supplements, herbs, etc.) and Nutrition; Reflexology can help as a gentle detox process and stress release. One benefit of having a healthcare team is the ability to identify and correct all potential causes for a problem; practitioners can easily collaborate to enhance patient outcomes, and ensure the treatment modalities are complementing each other rather than hindering progress.

What separates you from your competition? We are a small clinic but we have a lot to offer. Our practice gives you the small town, familiar atmosphere that Aldershot fosters. When you join our practice, you join our health family. Our practitioners and staff are a tight knit group who genuinely care about each other as much as our patients, and that helps generate a warm, compassionate atmosphere. Most patients are surprised by the amount of time we spend with our patients, nurturing the relationship and getting to know them beyond just their injury/illness. Our practitioners are passionate about what they do and are willing to go the extra mile to advocate for their patients, to collaborate with other practitioners, and continue their education to provide the most optimal care for patients. What would you say to someone who is hesitant to get an assessment with Healing Touch Natural Wellness? We always offer free 15 minute, no obligation consultations affording you the ability to meet the practitioners to help determine who is best suited for your concerns, and whether you feel a connection. It is important for any patient to feel they can trust and confide in their practitioners – so feeling comfortable with one another from the beginning is critical. We will provide you with our best clinical judgement and we are not afraid to refer out to another clinic/practitioner when necessary. You offer a wide variety of health services. Discuss some of the positive stories your patients have experienced after working with Healing Touch? After working with us, I think patients feel that we genuinely care and have their best interests at heart. Providing a variety of services allows us to target the right treatment to the individual as the treatment response can vary from one patient to another. We had a new patient whose initial complaint was outside of our scope of treatment so he was referred to a more suitable practitioner. After some success, he eventually returned to the clinic for a different problem that had not been responding to treatment elsewhere. With a different approach, the chronic nagging low back pain began to subside and he was able to stop taking pain medication. His demeanor and personality completely changed from anger and frustration to happy and lighthearted; he was almost a completely different person. Bearing witness to someone’s hope become a reality, and revealing the person concealed by pain are some of the most rewarding outcomes that practitioners, patients, and family members can experience.
