The

REDTAILED HAWK Earlier this year

we discussed the numerous different species of Hawks that migrate to southern Ontario with Grimsby being Canada’s best spot to watch the spring migration. This month, we are featuring one of the 16 species – the Red-Tailed Hawk. This fearsome bird of prey is the most prevalent North American hawk. You have probably heard its hair-raising, hoarse screech before, as filmmakers often use a recording of its call when hawks or eagles of any species appear in a movie.

SCIENTISTS FIRST DISCOVERED AND STUDIED THE RED-TAILED HAWK IN JAMAICA, WHICH IS HOW IT GOT ITS SPECIES NAME, BUTEO JAMAICENSIS. 6

NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA

What does it look like? All red-tailed hawks have expansive, curved wings with small, broad tails. Most are brown on top with a pale, streaked underside. Adults’ tails are cinnamonred above and pale below, while young birds’ tails are brown with bands. Not all members of this species share the same colourations, however. Different morphs exist, namely dark- and rufousmorphs. The former are chocolate-brown with red

tails, while the latter have reddish-brown chests with dark undersides.

Where does it live? These spectacular birds live in various habitats, ranging from central Alaska south to Venezuela and east to the Virgin Islands. While they prefer open areas, such as fields and deserts, they also live near mountains and in tropical rainforests. They have even adapted to human-inhabited areas and are often seen perched on telephone poles and fence posts.

What is its conservation status? Fortunately, the red-tailed hawk’s International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) status is least concern. Many North American populations increased throughout the mid- to late 20th century due to the extensive replacement of grassland and dense forest to open, wooded parkland. Currently, there are over 2 million individuals globally.

What does it eat? These birds of prey have a varied diet, consisting of small to mid-sized mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects and other birds. They are sit-and-wait predators that perch themselves on high objects and trees in open areas, while scanning the ground for potential prey. When they attack, they dive slowly and carefully, with their legs stretched out so that they can grab prey with their sharp talons.

How does it mate? When about to mate, male and female redtailed hawks fly in broad circles high in the air. The male then dives down and flies up again several times before reaching the female from above, extending his legs and briefly touching her. Occasionally, the male and female will grasp on to each other, clamp talons and do a spiral plunge to the ground below before unclasping. Mated pairs are usually monogamous until one of the hawk’s dies. As the different Hawks begin to migrate to Grimsby, be sure to get your binoculars out and see how many you can spot. For a better vantage point, visit Beamer Memorial Conservation Area, a prime location for hawk watchers. Good luck and have fun! natureconservancy.ca NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA

Niagara Region’s drinking water treatment plants exceed expectations with 100% rating from Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks. Niagara Region’s six water treatment facilities have obtained a 100% rating from the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks during its 2020-2021 inspections. A 100% rating demonstrates the Region’s commitment to go above and beyond the multibarrier, health-based drinking water quality standards mandated by the province. The results were presented to Niagara Region’s Public Works Committee on March 9. The Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks inspects water treatment facilities annually to ensure compliance with provincial regulations. The Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks calculates its inspection ratings based on the

number of areas where a system is noncompliant. An inspection rating of less than 100% does not mean the drinking water is unsafe but shows where a system’s operations can improve.

by the continuous improvement efforts by all staff in the water-wastewater division. In Ontario, typically around 70% of municipal drinking water systems receive a 100% rating.

In addition to water quality monitoring, these inspections look at various aspects of water operations including reporting, record keeping, and certification. Delivering safe and reliable drinking water and efficient service delivery is at the forefront of daily operations for both the Region and your area municipality.

Each year, the Region produces water quality reports and makes them available to the public on our website. Visit our website to learn more about tap water in Niagara and to view annual drinking water quality reports.

Striving to maintain this above-average rating each year ensures residents receive the highest quality drinking water each and every day. This is achieved

NOW TAKING STUDENTS FOR TUITIONFREE SIX MONTH PSW COURSE Niagara College is now accepting students for the fully funded Accelerated Personal Support Workers program.

THE ACCELERATED PSW TRAINING PROGRAM IS A TUITION-FREE OPPORTUNITY FOR 6,000 NEW STUDENTS AND IS EXPECTED TO TAKE ONLY SIX MONTHS TO COMPLETE, RATHER THAN THE TYPICAL EIGHT MONTHS.

The program is part of the Ontario government’s $115 million investment to train up to 8,200 new personal support workers (PSWs) for highdemand jobs in Ontario’s health and long-term care sectors. Colleges across Ontario are now accepting applications for this new program. This includes Niagara College, with campuses in Niagara-onthe-Lake and Welland. "Personal support workers have been frontline heroes throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, providing critical care to those who most need it right now," said Sean Kennedy, President of Niagara College. "Niagara College has a long history of providing high quality, hands-on training for Personal Support Workers through our School of Nursing and Personal Support Worker Studies. We’re well-positioned to leverage this important initiative to educate highlytrained, much-needed PSWs."

After three months of coursework, and experiential learning in a clinical setting, students will complete the final three months in paid onsite training in a longterm care home or in a home and community care environment. Registration for the program is available through the Ontario College Application Service. The province is also offering tuition assistance to in-process PSW students who started the program at one of Ontario’s publicly-assisted colleges in January 2021. They are eligible to receive a $2,000 tuition grant to help them complete their studies, as well as a stipend to complete the clinical placement part of their training. niagaracanada.com NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA
