Grimsby Secondary School
BIG NEWS! By Principal Mat Miller
New Secondary School Named! At the DSBN Board Meeting on November 26th, 2019, the trustees voted West Niagara Secondary School as the name of the new secondary school being built in West Niagara. Slated to open in September of 2022, West Niagara Secondary School will serve students in the Grimsby, Lincoln, and West Lincoln communities. 187 names were submitted through an online process, and a committee of students, parents, community members and staff determined the top 3 names that trustees voted on. At the new school, students will be able to access a huge array of programming options, as well as state of the art facilities including a full artificial turf field with rubberized track. School colours and a mascot will be determined in the upcoming months as students and teachers continue to work together and provide input to the structures, traditions and culture of their new school. Football Team Wins Championship Persevering through a challenging season, the GSS Eagles Football team
brought home the Tier 2 Football championship for the second time in three years, after a 7-year hiatus for the program. The team included students from both Grimsby Secondary and Beamsville Secondary - as we look forward to one secondary school in West Niagara in September of 2022.
Recognition on the offensive side of the ball goes to Ty Mitchell and Ryan Neudorf, who was named league MVP for his consistent, tough and determined rushing efforts throughout the year.
During regular season play, the Eagles lost to both the Governor Simcoe Redcoats in a hard-fought and tight game, and the Centennial Cougars in a blowout 37-1 loss. The playoffs brought different outcomes, though.
GSS students enrolled in Grade 12 University Physics and Grade 12 Computer Science are working together on collaborative problem solving. Teachers Mr. B. Holland and Mr. D. Delaney have structured a series of tasks that require the expertise of both physics and computer studies students to complete. This unique opportunity mimics problem solving situations in academia, and industry, where individuals with varying areas of expertise collaborate, innovate, and problem-solve regularly. This practice not only enhances student learning through computer applications and reciprocal teaching, but also gives students the opportunity to build their skills and ability to think innovatively and bring their ideas to life in a group setting.
The Eagles won a tight 15-14 overtime contest on the road against Governor Simcoe in the semi-final and secured a solid 21-15 road win against the Centennial squad that had beaten them in Grimsby a few weeks earlier, in the championship game. The Eagles dominated the line of scrimmage and used some offensive trickery to take the title against a previously dominant Centennial team. Defensive standouts for the Eagles included Liam Bogucki and Josh Seabrook - both of whom played extremely well against a very strong offensive Centennial team in the final.

GBF COMMUNITY SERVICES Supporting Grimsby Photos and story provided by GBF FB page
GBF Community Services is a non-profit organization that provides assistance to members of the community by providing compassionate support and material assistance. Here are 2 examples of “making a difference in the community” - a demonstration of helping hands in the community and the power of personal stories. The Grimsby & District Lions Club annual holiday tradition is to lend GBF a hand with assembling 250 personal hygiene kits to be included in registered household Christmas Hampers. The many hands of Lions made light work. The Grimsby Lions surprised GBF Staff: Ashley and Roger, with a kind holiday card and a generous donation of $500 to purchase Christmas Hamper necessities. In addition, the Grimsby Lions sponsored two registered families to help make their Christmas extra special. On Tuesday November 19th, guest speakers Lisa Simone and Leanne Pocknell presented Addiction and Recovery: “A Lived Experience” at the Mental Health Speaker Series. Lisa and Leeanne both shared emotional and inspiring recovery stories of their personal experiences with addiction, treatment and recovery. Their personal stories brought awareness of the real struggles of addiction, the importance of utilizing treatment services and provided inspiration and hope to individuals and families affected by addiction and mental health.

An official parade ceremony was held on Monday, November 11th at the Grimsby Cenotaph, located at the Grimsby Museum, at 10:45am. TREE LIGHTING By Susan Gibbins
There were so many activities for the whole family at the Fleming Centre in Beamsville during the Town of Lincoln’s Annual Tree Lighting on November 30th. Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived on their sleigh to the delight of all the children. Delicious hot chocolate with whipped cream helped keep everyone warm. There were so many crafts to do in the kid’s activity room as well as free skating all evening. Upstairs held the Oh Christmas Spree Market with all kinds of vendors selling their unique gifts. As soon as the sun went down the tree was lit to the delight of everyone.
The Whiskey
King
by Trevor Cole
Provided by Grimsby Historical Society
The Whisky King, written by award-winning author Trevor Cole, is the remarkable true story of Canada’s most infamous bootlegger and the undercover Mountie on his trail. Recently at the Grimsby Historical Society Monthly Lecture Series, members and guests were treated to an entertaining evening as award-winning author Trevor Cole shared the story of Rocco Perri, the King of Bootleggers. In the early 1920s, Rocco Perri was the most popular mob boss in Ontario earning one-million dollars a month bootlegging liquor from Hamilton, Ontario while the average citizen earned $600 annually. Rocco was a mob boss with ethics as he didn’t support the use of guns. He disappeared in the mid 1940s and no one really knows what happened to him. Was he murdered or did he disappear to Mexico with his fortune? The Whisky King is a Globe and Mail Best Book of the Year and winner of the 2018 Arthur Ellis Award for Canada’s best nonfiction crime book.
