IT'S A BIRD! IT'S A PLANE!
IT'S LIL HEROES! By Jason Stacey
Lil Heroes is on a mission to spread the powers of hope, humour and kindness. Over the past year, seeing the world turned upside down by the global COVID-19 pandemic and feeling powerless and saddened by the grim news stories, Oakville resident Celina Ip began searching for something she could do to bolster people's spirits. "In particular, I wanted to brighten the lives of children who have been shuttered in their homes, unable to see their friends and live a normal childhood for over a year," said Ip. Inspired by the idea of the 'superhero' as well as the 'Random Acts of 6
NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA
Kindness' movement, Ip determined to create educational superhero play kits for children. "Ultimately, superheroes are all out to save the world; something most of us wish we could do, especially right now during this global pandemic," Ip said. "But while we can’t fly or time travel or magically heal someone who is sick, we can save the world in other ways. We can do that by using the powers that we are all born with: kindness, hope, humour... to make the world a better place. That’s
where Lil Heroes truly stemmed from, my vision of inspiring the younger generation to channel and hone these innate powers to the best of their ability, to spread more joy and hope in our world." By February 2021, Lil Heroes was launched (online at lilheroes.ca and @lilheroes.ca on Instagram and Facebook) with support from Ip's family and friends, living up to the small business' slogan of 'Greatness From Small Beginnings'.
"We're a small business but we are mighty and we are working hard to make big waves within the local community - Oakville, Burlington, Hamilton, Mississauga - and reach others coastto-coast," said Ip. "And that's why I chose that slogan for Lil Heroes, to remind our young generation that they might be 'small' but they are mighty.
EVERYONE IS BORN WITH GREAT POWERS AND GREAT POTENTIAL, BUT IT'S UP TO US TO TAKE THAT FIRST SMALL STEP TOWARDS THAT BIG DREAM THAT COULD HAVE SOME IMPACTFUL AND POSITIVE CHANGE." The first Lil Heroes play kits were inspired by the power of kindness, humour and hope. Each play kit includes a handmade felt cape, eye mask and a few special tools (such as Kindness Cards) that Ip hopes will instill kids with the confidence to be real-world superheroes, ready to spread some positivity among their family, friends and neighbours. "By putting on their superhero cape and mask, having their super sidekick (a stuffed animal or a pet!) tag along and using the tools in their kit, kids can begin spreading positivity (hope, humour, kindness) in the world — to make someone smile, make someone laugh and brighten someone's day!" said Ip.
THIS JUNE, LIL HEROES WILL BE RELEASING A NEW CANADIANA-THEMED PLAY KIT IN ANTICIPATION OF CANADA DAY. "This kit will focus on promoting 'Pride' — to teach kids about the importance of being proud of one's roots, proud of one's history, and being proud to be Canadian," Ip said. You can check out Lil Heroes on Facebook and Instagram at @lilheroes.ca and on the web, where you can place an order, at lilheroes.ca. NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA

"I love the long dry time that comes from using oil paints," remarks David. "It allows me to be more measured in my approach. Other paint mediums force you to rush but oils can be left for long periods of time. Additionally, I just feel you can get richer values using oil paints over other paints such as acrylics." Since discovering his love for oil paints, David has continued to learn and perfect his techniques. His use of bold brush strokes, lots of colour and strong contrast, has been his signature throughout his works, bringing life to his subjects and causing them to leap from the canvas. Throughout the past few years and throughout the pandemic, David has had a steady side business of commissions to paint portraits of people’s pets and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.
"I'VE RECEIVED SOME VERY KIND NOTES THAT I’M VERY PROUD OF. TRUTHFULLY, THE ONLY NEGATIVE FEEDBACK COMES FROM WITHIN – I'M MY OWN WORST CRITIC. I'M WORKING TO CHANGE THAT, BUT I’M NOT UNIQUE IN THAT REGARD – ARTISTS CAN BE TOUGH ON THEMSELVES."
So what does the future hold for this emerging artist? Well, his long-term goal is to make his passionate side hustle into a full-time career but as he is well aware, life is complicated and busy (especially with a toddler). "I think I’m a ways away from making the transition from my current career to full-time artist. Until then, I'll hopefully keep making people happy with pet portraits and working hard on my landscape skills."

GRIMSBY AND LINCOLN EMBARK ON
SHARED FIRE SERVICE PILOT PROJECT TO ENHANCE AND OPTIMIZE
FIRE PROTECTION SERVICES The Town of Lincoln and The Town of Grimsby are collectively embarking on a pilot project to undertake shared fire protection services. Both Councils have approved reports directing their respective staff to proceed with jointly establishing and regulating a Fire Department for the two neighbouring communities in West Niagara. The approved plan for a shared fire service allows both municipalities to maximize their collective resources and reduce costs, resulting in administrative efficiencies and additional support for frontline services. This also helps to preserve the volunteer fire service model both municipalities currently employ.
focus on frontline services. A partnership between Grimsby and Lincoln was explored due to similarities between the two communities’ populations, demographics, geographic profiles, growth projections and existing fire protection agreements between the two municipalities.
The service was first explored as a response to the Province’s Regional Government Review that was initiated in 2019. While amalgamations did not take place, municipalities were encouraged to explore opportunities for shared services with other municipalities, in the interest of achieving operational efficiencies and
The project is coming to fruition thanks in large part to a Provincial Modernization Grant which allowed the municipalities to further investigate the opportunity, and a working group comprised of the Fire Chief and the Chief Administrative Officers, Deputy Fire Chiefs and Finance teams from both Lincoln and Grimsby.
"STRONG PARTNERSHIPS SUCH AS THE ONE GRIMSBY AND LINCOLN SHARE ARE THE CORNERSTONES OF COMMUNITY PROGRESS AND SUCCESS. THIS SHARED FIRE SERVICE PILOT PROGRAM WILL PRESERVE THE EXCELLENT SERVICES THAT OUR FIRE DEPARTMENT TEAM PROVIDES, AND ALSO CAPTURE EFFICIENCIES AND OPPORTUNITIES THROUGH PARTNERSHIP AND TEAMWORK." - Mayor Jeff Jordan, Town of Grimsby
The project will be rolled out in two phases. Phase 1 the pilot project will start around October 1, 2021, and is expected to continue for approximately 24 months. During this phase a single fire department will be created, with a Joint Advisory Committee established to oversee to provide governance to the service area, and a Fire Master Plan will also be carried out through a third party. Phase 2 would proceed to full implementation of the partnership, further addressing alignment of staffing, cost sharing and capital property.
"LINCOLN COUNCIL STRONGLY SUPPORTS A SHARED FIRE SERVICE WITH GRIMSBY IN ALIGNMENT WITH OUR PRIORITY OF BEING A RESILIENT COMMUNITY, BY PLANNING FOR CONTINUED PUBLIC SAFETY AND ENSURING RESPONSIBLE AND SUSTAINABLE FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT., AS WE NURTURE AND GROW OUR PARTNERSHIPS WHILE CONTINUING TO PROVIDE THIS CRUCIAL SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY MORE EFFICIENTLY." - Mayor Sandra Easton, Town of Lincoln NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA
