Over these past many weeks our lives have changed profoundly. Our number one priority is staying well and ensuring we don’t contribute to the spread of COVID-19. Staying home has come to mean staying safe and those who do venture out do so out of necessity, taking an abundance of precautions.

We continue to have deep appreciation for our frontline workers who are enabling us to get through this worldwide pandemic. Our medical professionals, paramedics, PSWs, firefighters, police and those who bravely risk their own health to keep us well have our full support. A new level of appreciation for grocery store, pharmacy, postal, delivery, volunteers and varied essential workers has given us the opportunity to say thank you more often. Many businesses in our communities have felt the economic impact of the pandemic. Buying local has never been so important. Phone and online orders are happily filled, contactless pick up and delivery get the goods to us.

Purchasing a gift card, ordering in for a meal or stopping by an open business to show your support are all valued gestures. These actions will help keep our local businesses afloat until regular business can resume. Whether you are social distancing from seniors, family members and friends, home schooling or working from home, collectively we draw strength from being in this together. Phone calls, texts, emails and zoom help us to feel connected. The creativity and humour being shared at this time helps to lift our spirits. The abundance of acts of generosity, caring and concern speak to our Canadian resiliency and strength. We see healthy days ahead.

BIRTHDAY PARTY IDEAS DURING ISOLATION

Who would have ever thought we would be planning birthday parties without a gathering? Not me. But with a birthday to celebrate at the end of April, we sat down and put our thinking caps on to come up with ways to make it equally as awesome.

Here are some great ideas for planning a birthday celebration while social distancing. 6

NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA

Start with the Invitation Since the birthday boy or girl can’t physically hand out their party invitations, an e-vite is the next best thing. I suggest using Wish & Give. Their online e-vites encourage attendees to donate to the birthday child’s gift and their charity of choice. If your child has their eyes on that very expensive LEGO set, this is a great way to get them their perfect gift from all of their friends!

Decorate Go all out with the décor. This is no time to scrimp on the streamers! Wait till they’ve gone to bed and watch their surprise in the morning!

Plan a YES Day Have you had a Yes Day before? It’s simple. Anything your child asks, you say Yes to (within reason). “Mom, can I have chocolate for breakfast?” Yes! “Dad,

want to play ball in the yard?” Yes! Other requests, like seeing friends, may need a “Yes, once this is all over”, but this is a sure-fire way to have a positive birthday.

Bring the Movie Theatre Home If your child is a movie fan, they’ll love to stream a movie! There are so many amazing streaming sources to watch movies for free or for a small fee, on-demand. Universal Studios Entertainment is releasing movies that are “still in theatre” to streaming services On Demand. Once the movie is chosen, turn your living room into a theatre by closing your curtains and blinds to make the room dark. Make sure to pop some popcorn or get the real stuff delivered from Film.ca, and of course, don’t forget the candy and drinks. ACTION!

Chalk Art Messages from Friends I loved seeing the creativity of the #chalkyourwalk movement – so use it to display birthday messages! Drive over to a friend’s house and #chalkTHEIRwalk! Send them some birthday love from 6+ feet away on their special day.

Order Take Out/Curbside Dining from their Favourite Local Restaurant Delicious food is always a great way to make a birthday celebration successful. Thankfully, many restaurants are still open and offering delivery and pick up. Go to the restaurant’s website to see if they are open or check out my facebook page with a list of restaurants still open.

Organize the Great Canadian Bake-Off! If your kid loves to bake, or just loves to laugh, why not have a baking challenge with their friends? First, contact the parents to arrange a FaceTime or Zoom party time. Next, drop off all of the cake baking needs and decorations (while maintaining your distance). The party starts with everyone having their naked cake ready to decorate. The mess, the laughter, and the friends will make for some great memories. You can even record the Zoom call! You can also have cookie dough delivered from a local bakery.

Balloons Balloons brighten anyone’s day and Ettridges has kept up their balloon creations and delivery during this time. Daffy Dill The Clown is our favourite balloon twister and she can deliver unicorns, princesses, rainbows and more!

Have a Netflix Party Netflix Party is a new way to watch Netflix with friends online. Netflix Party synchronizes video playback and adds a group chat to your favourite Netflix shows. Kids can watch and message the group at the same time. You can even deliver some movie-watching supplies like popcorn, candy and drinks to all the kids in the party. Bonus points for a small pizza!

Our world we live in may be changing, but celebrating people should never go away. Use the many resources out there to make someone’s special day one of the best they ever had.

Active Parents is the leading online resource for families in the GTA and GHA. They connect parents and grandparents to great ways to spend time with their families. Bruce Trail

Spring Beauty BY THE

Trail

The Bruce Trail connects Queenston Heights in Niagara with Tobermory at the northern tip of the Bruce Peninsula. It follows Niagara Escarpment’s ‘ribbon of green’ as it threads through Southern Ontario. Along its way the sights are endless and constantly changing with the seasons. Spring of course is one of those special seasons. Spring wildflowers are the first true sign winter is over. Beginning in March with the emergence of Coltsfoot to the late flowering of Mayapple and Columbine in June.

Mayapple

Wild Geranium with native bee

With being in the Carolinian Forest Zone of Canada we have a tremendous variety of spring wildflowers to enjoy. They provide almost four months of changing colours and thrills from the different blooms at our feet.

Columbine

Large Flowered Bellwort

Jack in the Pulpit Our spring wildflowers are in a race. They need to take full advantage of the life-giving spring sunshine before the leaves of the trees come out and put the forest floor in shade. Some of the spring wildflower species remain as green plants during the summer producing their fruit and seeds and building up energy stores in their root systems in preparation for next spring. Some early bloomers like Trout Lilies are a distant memory by July, hiding in the soil as a bulb. Jack-in-the-Pulpit can be found into the fall displaying its bunches of red berries.

Fortunately, in Grimsby, we have a marvellous section of the Bruce Trail, which is garnered with an abundant carpet of spring wildflowers. Some species like Mayapple and Wild Ginger can grow in large colonies with one central root system. It may take decades for the colony to reach its present size.

Wild Ginger

Red Trillium

Ontario’s provincial flower is the White Trillium. Along the trail we can also find less frequently, Red Trilliums. In May, we may come across what we think are pink trilliums. Actually, the pink petals are the White Trillium flowers in their last days before they wilt away in the heat. Not a bad way to go out with a finale of pink blooms.

Herb Robert Please keep to the trail. Travelling off trail may eliminate these wildflowers all together. It is so important to always stick to the trail, both foot and paw. The wildflowers grow profusely right up to the trail side. No need to venture off trail to enjoy them. All of the photos in this article were taken from the trail.

• • • • • •

1/4 cup Olive Oil 1/8 cup Lemon Juice 1 clove of Garlic, minced 1/2 tsp Salt 1 tsp Dried Oregano 1/4 tsp Pepper

FOR THE DRESSING • • • • • • • • •

2-3 cloves of Garlic, peeled 1 tsp Dijon Mustard 1 tsp Anchovy Paste 1/2 tsp Worcestershire Sauce 2 drops Tabasco Sauce 1/2 Lemon Juice 1 Egg Yolk 1/2 cup Olive Oil 1/4 cup Parmesan Cheese, grated

+ additional oil for brushing on the romaine

DIRECTIONS STEP 1. Mix together the marinade and put in a Ziploc bag with the chicken in the fridge for at least an hour. STEP 2. Meanwhile, chop the bacon into small pieces and reserve. STEP 3. Combine dressing ingredients and put in a food processor and blitz until smooth, and reserve. STEP 4. Preheat BBQ grill to med-high. STEP 5. Brush the romaine wedges with olive oil and place on grill. Keep an eye on them - it won’t take long to grill. Roughly 2 minutes total. Turn after 30 seconds to a minute, and continue until the leaves are slightly charred, but the lettuce should still be a bit crisp near the core. Reserve on a platter. STEP 6. Once chicken has marinated for an hour, place on the preheated BBQ grill and grill until internal temperature of the chicken is 165°F. STEP 7. Slice each chicken breast across the grain into bite-size pieces and place on top of the grilled romaine platter. STEP 8. Sprinkle the bacon pieces and croutons on over the chicken and romaine, and drizzle the dressing on top. Sprinkle with grated parmesan. NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA

C O V I D -1 9 FUNDR A ISING C A M PA IGN BY STACY ELIA, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, GBF COMMUNITY SERVICES & THOMAS E. BEACH, CHAIR- GBF MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAM

The GBF Community Services continues to meet the needs of local residents in difficult times residing in Grimsby. Every day we hear and receive an alarming amount of conversations and inquiries about how clients and community members are coping with Covid-19. Responding to the Pandemic creates a range of challenges for families and individuals locally. We encourage and realize the importance of respect for the many efforts needed to address Covid19 including things like physical distancing and working from home, howerver, all of these changes does strain peoples well-being. There are many new elements that are being introduced that individuals are finding it difficult to manage. It is not just those with a history of mental health challenges who are having a tough time. Many of us are asked to do a lot of things that are not common for day to day functioning.

14

NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA

GBF Has always worked extremely hard and passionately to advocate and support those who reach out for help. In 2019 GBF invested $42,000 into local Mental Health initiatives and an additional $86,900 to local community partners providing additional Social Services. Today, we are asking our community to consider a financial donation to our Covid-19 Mental Health Campaign to help assist local children, adults and seniors to stay healthy while trying to protect themselves during this pandemic. It is our goal to raise $100,000 for this initiative. We are hopeful to reach our goal so we can continue multiple initiatives currently in play to meet the mental health needs of our community. Right now, it is important for those with mental health conditions and those at risk, to have access to the local support they need. Tom and I have both personally made our financial contributions to kick off our campaign; please join us with your support. This is a fabulous opportunity to raise funds, have fun in a difficult time and honour those we love most. GBF is proud to continue to support Mental Health wellness in our community. Together, we can make a difference.
