EIGHT MONTHS had gone by and I had not picked up my camera other than to take a picture of my sleeping cats. When the pandemic started, all projects I had on the go came to a halt. I was making my way through the world of filmmaking and I hoped I was on my way to work on some great projects. Then, COVID. It felt like the past ten years of building myself as a videographer and photographer had just disappeared. I thought; I will get a call soon about a job, I’m sure of it. But no one called. It had been years since I didn’t have something to work on, and even longer since I pursued a "passion project". It began to feel like I was going to have to start over. Down in the slumps and with my cameras collecting dust, I looked back and reminded myself how and why I got into the filmmaking industry. I have a small yet big family, no uncles, aunts, or cousins living in Canada, my mum is an only child and my father's family is across the world in New Zealand. I am however extremely fortunate to have seven wonderful siblings whom I’ve watched grow into some of the funniest, talented, and passionate people I have ever met. Because of them I had free and immediate access to taking family portraits.
Life
DURING A PANDEMIC Article and Photography by Jade Chittock
Throughout the years, taking family portraits had slowly been put on the back burner. I still enjoyed taking pictures of my siblings (when they let me, of course) but I had forgotten the excitement I felt when editing the photos I had captured and the gratitude from the families when they saw their smiling children actually standing still for a picture. With all of that in mind, and my camera finally back in hand, I set out to see if I could sneak a picture of my family, which I knew would be no easy feat as they used to live the typical on-the-go lives with hockey, dance, and friends. To my utter amazement I was greeted by all of them sitting at the table eating lunch. This had never happened before. I seized my opportunity and told them all to get dressed and to meet me outside for a family photo. My mum was ecstatic of course, and I got the family picture. This must be happening to other families, I thought. So many families rarely get the opportunity and time to spend with each other, until now. Now we are pretty much forced to be together so why not take some pictures of it? And here I am, meeting some wonderful families who all share similar experiences. I started this project as a way to get back into what I love most, photography, and it turned into something much more than that. 6

Here is what some families in have had to say about being in lockdown and what they have been going through during the pandemic:
"I was more aware of mental health and aware about what’s going on for the kids. And being open about how you feel, because it’s a lot of change, especially with the kids. They don’t always know how to talk about it or understand it at their level so we need to understand what’s going on with them. It wasn’t a concern when they were going to school and they were being more social, it’s just us all the time now."
THE BARR FAMILY
"I realize as it went on, there were certain things that were bothering me and upsetting me more than upsetting them, and they didn’t notice so I think it affected adults more than the kids. My kids are lucky they have each other, as much as they disagree sometimes, they have each other to play with and I know there’s a lot of struggle with parents who only have one child, they’re really missing that interaction. A lot of people are very creative at finding ways to make it work. When you make the best of it, it really does make a difference."
THE COLLINS FAMILY "Our kids are closer than ever now. They’re all in the same age bracket so they enjoy a lot of the same things. We’ve built a backyard ice rink, something we never have done before. It was tough when all of their programs were cancelled, forcing them to be at home all of the time. But we’ve had a lot more time to spend together, and we’ve been doing a lot of skating, bike riding and hiking." NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA
7
TRACY AND FAMILY "We’ve been doing a lot of baking and puzzles, spending more time outside. We are especially taking advantage of the weather when it is nice. And the kids have actually enjoyed their time together. They don't get to see their friends as much and I think that’s the one thing they are missing but a lot of us are feeling the same. At least we have each other and we know it’s temporary. We’re one of the fortunate families to live in a beautiful neighbourhood with the parks and what is available here. Just driving by seeing the winter lights is good. I think the kids are finding it a bit easier because they’re siblings and get to play with each other at least. And that makes a big difference."
"The positive is we’ve been together the whole time, I mean we’ve actually enjoyed that. We’ve been doing well, going with the flow pretty well. My son has been doing online school since September, so he’s bummed that he’s not back at school right now. Recess is combined with lunch, it’s a fast break; they come out and play hockey every day for about 15 minutes, have a quick snack and then it’s back inside.
Being together as a family is what has gotten us through the past year." 8

THE MEHTA FAMILY
THE PARK FAMILY "Well, for us, it hasn’t been that bad. We’ve really bonded as a family. I have teenage children and then a 10-year-old and they were all over the place, and now we have family meals and family games and watch TV together. You know we’re all here together so as hard as it is I’m not missing the outside life. We’re looking forward to spring and things getting back to normal. At least last summer I was a little bit more open and you could sit outside."
THE SHERWOOD-JONES FAMILY "The online schooling is not easy but it’s way better than it was last year. I think the screen time is tough for everyone but we’re fortunate that we’re working and that helps, but we miss the connection. The connection is the hardest I think for the parents and the kids, just the solitude sucks. They’re managing to get through it."
"We have had lots of time to connect with eachother, which I think is the silver lining in all of it as a family. We were really busy before and things just slowed down, which has also been a silver lining. But certainly missing friends has been the toughest part."
THE SCHULERVANDERKLOK FAMILY "A positive is more family time: We eat meals together again! Having children that do competitive sports, we were always juggling our time and running from place to place and eating on the go. Now we plan meals, cook together and eat together almost every day. Our dishwasher is always full and the grocery bill has definitely increased but it has been so nice to have quality time together. We talk about our day, our dreams and hopes for the future and if it was a successful meal or not ... lol."

THE GREAT BACKYARD BIRD COUNT IS AN ANNUAL 4-DAY GLOBAL EFFORT (over 250,000 contributors in 176 countries) that provides scientists with a GPScoordinated snapshot of the world’s bird population in mid-February. In Canada since 2009 it has been a joint partnership between the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Birds Canada. Scientists can superimpose weather maps using the GPS-defined location of one’s count to better understand the relationship between bird populations and the climate. In addition to counting birds in a location, typically a backyard, for a minimum of 15 minutes, photos can be submitted to the Cornell Lab to complement the count.
