Over these past many weeks our lives have changed profoundly. Our number one priority is staying well and ensuring we don’t contribute to the spread of COVID-19. Staying home has come to mean staying safe and those who do venture out do so out of necessity, taking an abundance of precautions.

We continue to have deep appreciation for our frontline workers who are enabling us to get through this worldwide pandemic. Our medical professionals, paramedics, PSWs, firefighters, police and those who bravely risk their own health to keep us well have our full support. A new level of appreciation for grocery store, pharmacy, postal, delivery, volunteers and varied essential workers has given us the opportunity to say thank you more often. Many businesses in our communities have felt the economic impact of the pandemic. Buying local has never been so important. Phone and online orders are happily filled, contactless pick up and delivery get the goods to us.

Purchasing a gift card, ordering in for a meal or stopping by an open business to show your support are all valued gestures. These actions will help keep our local businesses afloat until regular business can resume. Whether you are social distancing from seniors, family members and friends, home schooling or working from home, collectively we draw strength from being in this together. Phone calls, texts, emails and zoom help us to feel connected. The creativity and humour being shared at this time helps to lift our spirits. The abundance of acts of generosity, caring and concern speak to our Canadian resiliency and strength. We see healthy days ahead.

During this pandemic, we’ve all been encouraged to stay inside to help stop the spread of COVID-19. THN Media photographer, Peeter Poldre took this opportunity to spend some time looking out his window recently and captured a wide variety of birds as they perched in the trees and his bird feeders. Thank you for bringing some colour to our world Peeter.

Today’s Grimsby Beach neighbourhood is a grand combination of old growth Carolinian trees and the evolution of a former Methodist Church camp, creating a one-of-a-kind Canadian community. Located on the Lake Ontario shoreline and cradled by the nearby Niagara Escarpment, the area enjoys a unique climate and idyllic setting. The first meeting at the Methodist Church Camp took place in 1848. As time moved along, the Church campground evolved into a cottage community of the late 1800’s when the Gingerbread architectural style was becoming popular. Tents were replaced with board and batten cottages dressed with ornate woodworking. The layout of the community followed the campground footprint with its small lots, narrow lanes and abundance of mature trees.

Today, the community is a mixture of colour, architecture, magnificent trees and personalities. The sheer art of the gingerbread style homes has been adopted and encouraged by many of the homeowners here. The competition in colour is the adrenaline and the unique style sets the tone for a strong fabric binding the neighbourhood. Built along informal lines and using the old campground footprint, the streets are a refreshing puzzle compared to modern, unimaginative subdivision design. ►

In the late 1800’s and into the 1900’s, the beach became a popular lakefront tourist site with a large pier greeting passenger ferries from Toronto and Upstate New York. The camp evolved into Grimsby Park with two hotels, a dance hall and a huge pavilion that could hold 7,000 people. The Methodist Church campground was built into the existing forest. Some wonderful examples of the original trees remain and frame the neighbourhood. Many of these trees were growing long before any thoughts of a church camp took shape. Today, the oldest trees are sugar maples, white pines, white oaks, bitternut hickories and black walnuts. Residents are well acquainted with their urban forest and highly value it. These trees give us a brief glimpse of the landscape our forefathers recognized and enjoyed.

NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA

Adjacent to the cottage community is the Grand Old Oak parkette. This one-hectare parkette was a gem of old growth white pine, black cherry, an immense white oak and a towering red oak. Due to a severe windstorm in April of 2012, the ancient oaks, dating back from the late 1700’s, were too weak to withstand the high winds and twisted and broke. Many of the majestic white pines and black cherry succumbed to the wind as well. The fortunate part of this story is that some of their offspring are alive and well with some being huge trees today. Most importantly, they are living in a neighbourhood that celebrates and cherishes them.

Recently, the Town of Grimsby provided funds for a new forest of native Carolinian trees and shrubs to be planted in this parkette to provide for a future forest of giants. The Town, as of February of this year, initiated the process for a Planning Study and interim control by-law for the Grimsby Beach neighbourhood. It recognizes the need to stay ahead of the development curve to maintain this unique Canadian neighbourhood for tomorrow.

"In only three weeks, GroceryHero has built a national community and has made more than 1,000 matches between medical workers and volunteers across the country," says Matthew Lombardi of GroceryHero. “Canada’s front-line medical workers are the true heroes during this pandemic,” says Mohamad Fakih, Founder and owner of Paramount Fine Foods. “I am proud to support GroceryHero in its efforts to engage volunteers for this great service across the country and I hope this small act will make a big difference in the lives of our medical workers.”

SUPPORTING Front-line Medical Workers One Delivery at a Time GroceryHero and Mohamad Fakih partner to provide grocery delivery services to front-line workers across the country. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect Canadians from coast-to-coast, front-line medical workers are tackling this dangerous disease head-on as they selflessly put themselves in the line of danger to care for the sick. 12

NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA

After a long shift, the last thing medical workers want to do is visit the grocery store and risk exposing shoppers to potential danger. That is why GreoceryHero was created. GroceryHero is a free grocery delivery service for front-line medical workers that is completely volunteer driven. Volunteers can sign up on getgroceryhero.com and then are matched with a medical professional in their neighbourhood (by postal code) to help with the delivery.

Once a match is made, GroceryHero connects the medical worker and volunteer through email to discuss shopping needs, drop off and payment – the delivery is free, but volunteers will be reimbursed for the price of groceries. “As the pandemic continues and the demand for GroceryHero continues to grow, Mr. Fakih’s timely donation and experience running successful companies will help ensure we can strengthen our presence in parts of the country where we see the most demand,” says Lombardi. To learn more about GroceryHero, please visit getgroceryhero.com.

About GroceryHero GroceryHero is a free delivery matching platform to help Canada’s front-line medical workers focus on fighting COVID-19. Volunteers across Canada are matched with a medical worker in their neighbourhood by postal code, solving for the problem of oversubscribed delivery services, and medical workers not wanting to go inside grocery stores and risk exposure. GBF is not immune to these challenges. The demand for assistance and the temporary closure of our Retail store due to Covid-19 has added extra pressure for the team to meet the community needs. At GBF, we strive to meet the needs of our community and the challenges that our community faces. Please join us to inspire others and affect transformational change.

FEED HOPE C A M PA IGN BY STACY ELIA, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, GBF COMMUNITY SERVICES

The GBF Community Services continues to meet the needs of local residents in difficult times residing in Grimsby. Over the last two months since the beginning of Covid-19, visits to our Food Bank by families and individuals who need assistance have increased weekly. In the last two months we have services an average of 750 individuals monthly. There are many individuals in our community who struggle to maintain their basic needs, people who work hard to get through a tough situation. They may be our neighbours, friends or even a family member. Everyone who reaches out for assistance at GBF Community Services is treated with sensitivity and dignity because the GBF team knows that life can change in an instant and any of us can find ourselves in crisis.

We know change will not happen overnight and it will not happen with just one person. We need a strong group of local leaders and business owners to take a lead in our community. Our goal is not to only inspire others to take action, but to inspire all of us to come together because while Grimsby is full of strength, we are even greater when we come together. By supporting the GBF Community Services initiatives you are partnering with others to make a significant impact in our community while celebrating this towns’ special character for generations to come.
