History of the

HAMILTON TIGER-CATS By Susan Gibbins

OSKEE WEE WEE! The Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League are celebrating their 150th anniversary and they want everyone to share in the excitement. Recently at the Grimsby Historical Society, Larry Robertson, Lead on the “Hamilton Proud 150 project with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats organization, shared details on the 150-year history of football in Hamilton and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Along side him was Ti-Cat alumni Bob Krouse as well as current players Chris Van Zeyl, Mike Filer and Jeremiah Masoli who posed for pictures and gave out signed footballs. The highlight of the evening was when the players got everyone up on their feet singing and doing the Oskee Wee Wee Cheer!

Community Profile

WITH

NATHANE JACKSON Birthplace: Fonthill, ON Current Residence: Niagara Falls, ON Career: Strength & Conditioning Coach, Nutritionist.

Tell us about your family. My wife’s name is Tara and we have three cats: Gilda, CJ & Carter.

What would you say is your Greatest Achievement?

If the whole community were listening, what would you say to them?

I was Co-Captain of my University basketball team. Helping people reduce or eliminate the need for medications, helping people move without pain or stiffness and helping people lose body fat is always a great achievement of mine.

I’d say, this life is our only at-bat and we need to swing away trying to accomplish everything that makes us happy. Don’t be afraid to reach out for help and at the same time offer as much help to others as possible.

NeighbourhoodMagazine.ca

What’s your favourite moview of all time? This is a tough question, as I love getting lost in a movie. Gladiator and The Matrix are up at the top of my list, along with Good Will Hunting and the original Point Break.

What makes you laugh? My wife is quite funny. She has always managed to make me fall off my chair in laughter.

WE ARE MORE POWERFUL when working together, rather than working exclusively on our own.

What is something few people would know about you? I have completely abandoned basketball for golf. I don’t play it (due to injuries) nor do I watch it on television.

Who is your favourite superhero and why? My favourite superhero is Batman because he has no super-human power. However, he does has tremendous courage and fight.

What brings you the greatest joy or satisfaction?

Who or what inspires you?

Helping people achieve their goals is great, but helping people realize they can do something they never thought possible gets me out of bed in the morning. Unfortunately, many of us put a limit on what we can achieve but usually it just takes a little shift in mindset to get them believing.

People who overcome adversity inspire me. The measure of a person can be seen in how they react to being dealt an undesirable hand.

What is the best advice you’ve been given? This is a tough question because I’ve been given lots of great advice by family, friends, mentors, etc. A few mottos I live by are: - You must put in the work - Have patience and be consistent - Don’t waste time and energy on what’s out of my control, only focus on controlling my own thoughts and reactions.

What does the word community mean to you? I think of community as extended family. We are much more powerful working together than working exclusively on our own.

This clean and healthy dessert is so delicious and one that you can feel great about eating. So good, that in fact, it would make perfect breakfast.

Directions STEP 1. Preheat oven to 375˚F. STEP 2. Hollow out the apples, but don't use an apple corer—it will slice all the way through the apple, which is not what we're after. You want to remove the core and seeds while keeping the bottom of the apple intact so you have a nice little vessel in the middle to fill with the crisp. STEP 3. Start by using a paring knife to carefully slice around the top core of the apple, making sure not to go all the way through to the bottom. Then pull out what you cut and use a spoon to scoop out the rest. Make sure that all seeds are out. I find that the sharp edges of a 1/2 tsp measuring spoon are ideal for scooping out the core but any small sharp spoon or even a melon baller will do. STEP 4. Place the apples in a roasting dish that holds them snugly.

Ingredients 8 Gala or Fuji Apples (they hold their shape best) 1 cup Water

FOR THE TOPPING 1 cup/100 grams Rolled Oats (I like large flake or old fashioned) 1/2 cup/45 grams Almond Flour 1/4 cup/30 grams Chopped Pecans, Almonds or Walnuts 1/4 cup Unsweetened Shredded Coconut 2 tbsp Maple Syrup

STEP 5. Mix all the Topping ingredients together (by hand). Spoon the topping evenly into each apple to overflowing. Pour the water into the bottom of the pan. Cover pan with foil. STEP 6. Cover the roasting dish with foil and bake for 25 minutes, uncover and bake for another 25 minutes or until the apples are soft, shrunken and the crisp is browned. STEP 7. In the meantime, make the Tahini Drizzle by mixing all the ingredients together with a whisk. STEP 8. Serve warm with the Tahini Drizzle drizzled over the top.

1 tsp Vanilla 2 tbsp Softened Coconut Oil

FOR THE SWEET TAHINI DRIZZLE 2-3 tbsp Tahini 1 tbsp Date Molasses (silan) 2 tbsp Water 1-2 tsp Lemon Juice

CLEAN EATING NOTES:

Oats have been used in herbal medicine, as a way to calm the nervous system. They are a great healthy comfort food – that has been shown to relax and calm anxiety. They are also a great source of fibre and plant based protein. Oats are naturally gluten free, and are a great way to get a boost of feel good B vitamins (the precursor to serotonin). Financial

At Brown Financial we help our clients (and neighbours) understand and implement financial solutions using all the tools available to their best ability.

Here are a few thoughts and questions that we’d love to discuss with you about your Retirement Income Planning: 1. Is it better to contribute to an RRSP or TFSA? 2. Can I own more than one TFSA?

Tax-Free Retirement Income

Happy 10th Birthday to the TFSA! There’s been some increased interest recently in how the TaxFree Savings Account (TFSA) is being used by Canadians. Here are some stats: • The TFSA is 10 years old this year • 40% of Canadians own a TFSA • $63,500 is the cumulative contribution limit (since 2009) • $6,000 is the annual increase to the contribution limit • 42% of TFSA owners hold nothing but cash (earning 0%-2.5% interest) The TFSA has really grown up over the past 10 years and is set to become one of the most powerful tools in Canadians’ retirement income toolkits. It may be hard to fathom but some people have already grown their TFSA balance to

NeighbourhoodMagazine.ca

3. RRSP/RIF income is 100% taxable, TFSA income is 0% taxable. 4. RRSP/RIF income can cause claw-back of OAS benefits, TFSA income doesn’t. 5. Can I move my TFSA from my bank to Brown Financial? 6. What type of investments can I own in my TFSA? 7. I’m a small business owner, does a TFSA make sense for me? We love new clients from our hometown of Waterdown and are looking to add a few more families to our clientele before the end of the year. Our team will make it easy to make the switch to Brown Financial.

over $1,000,000! And for some more perspective, a 50-year today will have over $150,000 of TFSA contribution room by age 65. As this account continues to mature we need to be looking at our TFSAs as Tax-Free Retirement Income accounts (not as simple savings accounts). Unfortunately, the government and other big institutions haven’t helped much to educate people about the important investment aspects of the TFSA. This is not to say that you can’t use your TFSA to save conservatively for short-term financial needs, it’s just that the most powerful long-term results will come from owning investments that deliver better than cash account returns (and fit your investment risk profile). Ultimately, you want to invest your TFSA holdings and grow your balance such that when retirement comes you can generate as much tax-free income as possible.

It all starts with a phone call or email. Get in touch with Laurie or Karen today!
