he Red Admiral butterfly (Vanessa atalanta) is found in temperate regions world-wide. Only males with a territory are able to attract females for mating. The Red Admiral can be an unusually calm butterfly, as this one was at the Riverwood Conservancy while posing on a purple coneflower, thus allowing for photography at a close distance. Downtown
REIMAGINED PROJECT LAUNCH The Town of Grimsby is delighted to share some exciting first steps in our Downtown Reimagined Project.
You may have noticed a new Downtown Parklet! This temporary demonstration project aims to encourage people to dream about the future of our downtown and encourage our community to take part in shaping the future of the downtown through our Downtown Reimagined project. "Now's the time to plan for streetscape improvements in time for the downtown watermain
replacement", said the Town of Grimsby Mayor Jeff Jordan. "We're excited to deliver this revitalization project to the community and shape the downtown core for years to come." Downtown Reimagined aims to create a space that will bring together pedestrians, cyclists and motorists in a safe and sustainable manner.
The project stemmed from the need to upgrade the aging watermain on Main Street allowing for concurrent above ground streetscape improvements. In a direct and indirect way, this project contributes to all of Town Council’s Strategic Priorities and helps our community advance COVID-recovery efforts.
"THIS IS AN EXCITING PROJECT FOR TOWN STAFF, COUNCIL, AND THE COMMUNITY. THIS PROJECT WILL PROVIDE MANY MEANINGFUL POSITIVE IMPACTS FOR THE TOWN OF GRIMSBY AND ALL ITS RESIDENTS,"
said Harry Schlange, CAO for the Town of Grimsby. 6
NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA
Together, Town Staff and Niagara Region, are looking forward to working with a myriad of stakeholders and the public to create a shared vision and design for the Downtown Grimsby streetscape and the parklet project is a glimpse into what that vision might include.
We are grateful for the private investment in this alleyway which further demonstrates the many possibilities of our downtown. "My goal in creating this space alongside and with the support of the Town of Grimsby, is to demonstrate to the community the potential our downtown has to bring our community together whether it is to walk, shop, dine, meet with friends or enjoy the beautiful escarpment. I feel privileged to be a part of the downtown business community here in Grimsby and I hope that business owners and building owners alike will see the space as an inspiration, to envision what we could create alongside the Town of Grimsby embracing the Downtown Reimagined project," says Kevin Luttjehuizen owner of Harmony Jewellers and Boone Dog Offices.
The Town of Grimsby encourages everyone to get involved. Share your ideas and follow along with the project updates at letstalkgrimsby.ca.

NATIONAL DAY FOR TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION Article and Photography by The Office of Burlington Mayor Marianne Meed Ward
On September 30, Burlington observed the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The day honoured the lost children and Survivors of residential schools, their families and communities.
8
The event at Spencer Smith Park included powwow dancers, a memorial walk and speeches on the effects of residential schools. The large crowd wore orange shirts which have become a symbol to honour the children who survived residential schools and remember those who did not.
"I'm just very grateful that my mother is here today, and she was a victim of the Mohawk residential school," said White Eagle. "Today, this is about recognition and being thankful for the survivors, because without the survivors, we wouldn't be here today. She chose to survive and she made it through."
Indigenous spiritual healer White Eagle said a prayer at the gathering and brought her mother to the stage.
Burlington Mayor Marianne Meed Ward also attended the event.

"Today is really meant to be about listening and learning and working towards healing. To understand what really happened in our country, the truth of what really happened and the issues that still face indigenous people coast-to-coast, and right here in the City of Burlington," said Meed Ward. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.

UNITED WAY NIAGARA'S 2021
CAMPAIGN KICKOFF Article by Grimsby.ca
In September, on behalf of Council, Mayor Jeff Jordan and Councillor Freake were joined by members of United Way Niagara to celebrate the kickoff of the organizations 2021 Campaign, which will run until the end of December.
SIMILAR TO LAST YEAR'S CAMPAIGN, THIS INITIATIVE WILL FOCUS ON HELPING 120,000 PEOPLE ACROSS NIAGARA WHO HAVE BEEN NEGATIVELY IMPACTED BY THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. Before the pandemic, 50,000 people in Niagara were food insecure, meaning they didn’t have appropriate access to healthy food. That number has increased by at least 20% in 2021. The latest point-in-time count conducted by Niagara Region for homeless individuals has also risen significantly from 625 in 2018 to 665 in 2021. Food banks have seen large increases for demand and shelters continuously operate over capacity. Poverty is a real problem in Niagara and we have the opportunity to help move that needle. 14
NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA
Last years campaign reached approximately 131,000 residents, with United Way Niagara supporting more than 100 agencies and investing in 216 programs annually in order to serve residents across the region. "It was a pleasure meeting staff from United Way Niagara today to help support them and their team as they kick off this important Campaign," said Mayor Jeff Jordan. "So many residents, both within Grimsby and the Niagara Region, have suffered from this pandemic so I encourage everyone to get involved in the Campaign if they are able to do so."
DONATIONS to the campaign can be made at unitedwayniagara.org.
