Wali Shaikh, TMFB volunteer

Patchwork

BEDSPREADS FUNDRAISER in Support of

THE MISSISSAUGA FOOD BANK Article by Meghan Nicholls | The Mississauga Food Bank

Wali Shaikh has volunteered for nearly 500 hours at The Mississauga Food Bank over the past 9 years. She always shows up to help, rain or shine. Her kindness and ongoing commitment to helping others is inspiring. "I first read about The Mississauga Food Bank in the local newspaper," remarks Wali. "They were hosting an open house to recruit new volunteers. My family has always been involved in volunteering from back home, so it was something I always wanted to do myself." This summer, during the months of July and August, Wali has been selling six beautiful patchwork quilts to raise funds for TMFB.

"COVID-19 has had a serious impact on people's livelihoods and has increased demand on the services provided by TMFB and their network," adds Wali. "I know the donation raised from the sale of the quilts I’ve made will have a positive impact on ending hunger in Mississauga." Whether you’re purchasing a quilt for yourself or a loved one, it’s even more special because it was made to support a wonderful cause. Contact Wali to purchase your bedspread today while quantities last! e: walihamid10@gmail.com 8

Lakeview Farmers' Market is

OPEN for Business By Jason Stacey 10

NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA

Food simply tastes better when it’s in season. On a sunny, Sunday, July 19th, the Lakeview Farmers’ Market opened at their new location, the parking lot of the historic Small Arms Inspection Building at Dixie Road and Lakeshore Road East. Crowds gathered early and often to experience a wide variety of local, sustainable, organic and artisanal products. What a great way to support locally grown food and artisans!

"Summer just doesnˈt feel like summer without going to our local Farmers' Market. It’s something my family and I look forward to each year." - Valerie S.

The Farmers’ Market runs every Sunday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm until October 11th.

Get out there and support local!

Food + Drink

Guilt-Free Pizza with a

FIERY KICK Don’t settle for everyday marinara when saucing your next pizza. Here, we’ve topped a gluten-free cauliflower crust with a fiery curry sauce and tandoori-spiced chicken for an Indian-inspired pie.

Ingredients • 1 pkg (300 g) PC cauliflower pizza crust

Chef's Tip Baking the crust on a rack allows for maximum air circulation while also supporting the weight of the toppings – and avoiding any messy spills in the oven.

• 2 boneless skinless chicken thighs • 1 tsp (5 mL) tandoori spice blend • 2 tsp (10 mL) olive oil • 1 cup (250 mL) lightly packed baby spinach • 1/3 cup (83 mL) tikka masala cooking sauce • 1/4 cup (60 mL) thinly sliced red onion • 1 cup (250 mL) shredded mozzarella cheese

Chicken

Tikka Masala PIZZA Prep Time: 10 minutes Cook Time: 30 minutes Serves: 6

Directions STEP 1. Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C). Place crust, bottom (flat) side up, on wire rack set over baking sheet. Bake, flipping crust halfway through, until edges are golden, 20 to 24 minutes. STEP 2. Meanwhile, sprinkle chicken with tandoori spice. Heat oil in non-stick skillet over medium heat. Cook chicken, turning once, until golden and no longer pink inside; about 8 minutes. Transfer to cutting board; let cool enough to handle. Thinly slice into bitesize pieces. STEP 3. Wipe skillet clean; heat over medium heat. Cook spinach, stirring, until wilted and liquid has evaporated; about 2 minutes. Remove from heat. STEP 4. Spread sauce onto crust, leaving 1/2 inch (1 cm) edge uncovered. Arrange chicken, spinach, onion and cheese over top in even layers. Bake until bubbling and browned; 7 to 8 minutes. Let stand 2 minutes.

GIVE A LOVING ANIMAL A NEW LEASE ON LIFE. Daisy is a sweet wise soul, who needs a specific family to expose her true potential. She is currently in training with her devoted foster and will need to continue in her forever home. She is loyal, loving and sensitive. Being moved around a lot in her life has caused some insecurities. To set her up for success, Fetch & Releash will be donating her adoption fee to her ongoing training and rehabilitation. Daisy is described by her foster as independent, highly intelligent, sweet, stubborn, and playful. If it were up to Daisy, she would hike on trails exploring and playing fetch all day, every day! Daisy is apprehensive of new people and would benefit from muzzle training under the guidance of a calm, focused leader. Daisy’s ideal family would be patient, have dog experience, and a good understanding of dog body language and behaviour. Daisy must be the only animal in the home and is looking to settle in the country or suburbs. She is looking for an adult only home as well.

SEX: FEMALE BREED: LABRADOR RETREIVER MIX AGE: 5 YEARS OLD If you are interested in adopting Daisy, visit fetchandreleash.ca/adopt to fill out an adoption application and for more information, email adopt@ fetchandreleash.ca.
