In-Home Senior Care Canadian seniors are living longer and healthier lives. In 2014 there were 6 million Canadians over 65 with a life expectancy of 81. By 2030 there will be over 9.5 million Canadians over 65 with a life expectancy of 86. South Mississauga is home to the largest number of seniors in Peel Region (over 100,000), with many of them having lived in their homes for 40+ years. Today’s senior wants to stay independent and in their homes for as long as they can, however sometimes a little help is needed in order for them to maintain that independence (as ironic as that sounds). In-home senior care allows seniors to age with grace and dignity and to remain safe and independent in their homes for as long as possible. A properly developed in-home senior care plan meets all of the senior and their family’s needs, providing all with peace of mind. A key component to any successful in-home care program is companionship

and socialization. Caregivers are not just in the home for a “task”, they are there to engage with the client, to share a laugh, play a game of cards or a board game, watch a program, discuss a book, go for a walk, look at old photographs, bake a cake, and much more. Caregivers can also assist the client with personal care needs such as bathing and hygiene, dressing, toileting and continence, mobility and transfers, etc. Caregivers also aide with meal prep, medication reminders, light housekeeping and laundry, accompaniment to medical appointments, grocery shopping, pharmacy visits, the senior centre, library, and more.

Lisa & Russ Donnelly are longtime Mississauga residents and the owners / operators of Senior Helpers Mississauga.

Ensuring continuity of care by having the same caregiver visit regularly is vital. The client and the caregiver will, over time, develop a bond. Caregivers can visit once a week, 3 times a week, 7 days a week and the length and frequency of the visits is determined by the senior and the family.

bird watching became a hobby, especially erlin app on my phone. During many social

Parkinson’s in the Park programs are offered in partnership with the City of Mississauga and this series of programs consists of Age wise exercise, Walk/Pole Walk and Stretch/Tai Chi which are all offered at local Municipal Parks. BIRDING ENTHUSIAST TO

BUTTERFLY ENTHUSIAST During the pandemic, bird watching became a hobby, especially with the Cornell Lab Merlin app on my phone. During many social distanced walks looking and listening for birds, the butterflies started flittering in and out of my vision and capturing my attention.

Many butterflies are beautiful, just like birds. Binoculars can help to appreciate them, just like birds. Butterflies tend to be active during regular waking hours, UNLIKE birds. They tend to fly and perch lower to the ground, UNLIKE birds. They tend to not hide in leafy trees, UNLIKE birds. Many butterflies have their favourite plant… find the plant, find the butterfly.

Some merits of Birding/Butterfly watching: makes you happier, is calming, keeps you mentally sharp, is a social activity and keeps you physically active and of course you become more connected to nature.

DID YOU KNOW... STRENGTH IS ONLY ONE COMPONENT OF ATHLETICISM? With the imminent opening of gyms and return to sport, it may be a great opportunity to reevaluate your training goals to better suit your health and performance needs. Balance, Coordination, Flexibility, Speed, or Cardiovascular Endurance, amongst other components of athleticism, may supersede the importance of strength-focused training. The 26th Annual Mississauga Arts Awards (MARTYS) premiered on Tuesday, June 29th at 7:00 PM on Mississauga Arts Council’s YouTube Channel: youtu.be/6ajS-iKz_fI Mississauga's arts community came together to celebrate the greatest achievements in the arts in Mississauga across all artistic practices in this compelling online presentation. "It’s been two long years since the leading lights in the arts communities gathered to celebrate, and recognize our most outstanding performers - and I've missed you!" says Mayor Bonnie Crombie "Thank you, for your inspiring talents that enrich our city every day. Congratulations, we salute you, we need you, and we thank you for your resilience!" The virtual award show, directed by Ron Duquette, highlighted the creative ingenuity displayed by the achievements of our 53 finalists, including 16 MARTY winners and 3 Community Award Winners. The show featured performances by MARTYS host and 2019 Music Solo Vocalist - Established Winner, Arlene; 2019-2021 City of Mississauga Poet Laureate and 2019 MARTY - Literary Arts Emerging Winner, Paul Edward Costa; and 2017 MARTY Dance Established Winner, Frog in Hand Dance Company. "In the wake of a detrimental year due to the COVID-19 pandemic the accomplishments of the winners are truly exceptional, considering the circumstances they have had to endure," says MAC Executive Director, Mike Douglas "Congratulations to all of the 2021 MARTY Winners!" "Thank you to the generous sponsors of the 2021 MARTY Awards", says Ken Jones, MAC’s President, "The show would not be possible without your support." Special thanks to our Patron Sponsors: Daniels Corporation, Edenshaw Developments, Rogers Real Estate Development and Urban Capital’s latest tower, M4. 12

PORT CREDIT

SLOW ROLL By Susan Gibbins | Photography by Peeter Poldre

In late July, the Port Credit Slow Roll began its new season with a ride from J C Saddington Park. Under the leadership of Ray Marentette, over forty riders enthusiastically took place. The youngest riders, Timothy, Hanna and Mackenzie, ranged in age from nine to twelve!

The Port Credit Slow Roll community bike rides began in May 2018 with over 200 cyclists having joined for at least one ride. With Berts Sports Excellence being the main sponsor, the group have experienced growth with sponsored T-shirts, free bike tune-ups and draws. The every two weeks Slow Roll rides are now expanding throughout Mississauga into Streetsville and Cooksville with a possibility of more to come. The Slow Roll were invited to be a participant in the 2019 Canada Day Paint the Town Red Parade and they are looking forward to 2022’s Canada Day parade. These rides, which are approved by the City of Mississauga, are open to all ages with no participation fee. Join the Port Credit Slow Roll Facebook group for updates on weather and other related notices.
