WE CAN’T DO THIS

WITHOUT Y O U !

PLEASE MAKE A FINANCIAL DONATION TO THE MISSISSAUGA FOOD BANK TODAY. We will require $840,000 to keep the shelves stocked during this crisis – $360,000 more than anticipated.

The Food Bank is asking the public to support with cash donations to ensure that: • When vulnerable families can’t afford to stock up on food, the Food Bank will have enough for them • If some food bank locations in Mississauga are forced to close, the Food Bank can provide special emergency distribution right to families

W HY THE M IS SIS S AUGA FOOD B A NK NEEDS YOUR HELP

DURING THE COVID-19 OUTBREAK BY THE MISSISSAUGA FOOD BANK

The Mississauga Food Bank is committed to doing all we can to protect our community while continuing service to our network of agencies and vulnerable people across the city.

6

NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA

• With schools closed, the Food Bank can distribute meals and snacks to kids who usually receive them at school or in before/after school clubs • Even though many community groups have cancelled their planned food drives and fundraising events, shelves will be stocked for anyone who may need food • The Food Bank can purchase food when food donations are not being made

At The Mississauga Food Bank (TMFB), the health and safety of our staff, volunteers, clients, and agencies is our top priority. Our goal during this pandemic is to ensure those living in poverty can access food and that our network of neighbourhood food banks, pantries, and other food programs can work together with us to provide this food in a healthy and safe way. We are monitoring the situation closely and will update as things change.

FAQˈs

Can I still volunteer? Our priority is the health and safety of our volunteers and staff. Opportunities will be posted on our website.

How will this impact lowincome individuals who are in need of food bank services?

To prevent the spread of COVID-19, VOLUNTEERS MUST CONFIRM THAT THEY HAVE NOT:

• Individuals living in poverty or with a low income are often unable to stockpile extra food or medicine in the event of sudden illness or quarantine

• Travelled abroad within the last 14 days • Been exposed to a case of COVID-19 within the last 14 days

• Even in the best of circumstances, individuals living with a low-income struggle to afford all of their basic necessities – emergency situations, such as this, put significant stress on already tight budgets

• Experienced difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, a high temperature, cough, and/or sore throat within the last 14 days

How are you ensuring health and safety at the food bank?

• We are also concerned about the impact of COVID-19 on individuals employed in precarious positions without access to benefits and/or paid sick days. This loss in income could significantly shift the financial well-being of these households.

• Our top priority is the health and safety of all those who help provide food and those who receive it

• We are also concerned about the longterm effects that COVID-19 may have on the economy and in turn, low-income families in Ontario

How Can I Help? • TMFB is not primarily governmentfunded and relies on the generosity of the community to support families in need. As such, we need financial resources to meet demand. • During this time, it is important to remember your neighbours who may not have the same access to food and personal items. Please consider a financial donation to the food bank or you can drop off donated food at the food bank. Please note: Mississauga fire stations are not currently able to accept donations for the food bank.

Are you changing your services? • For the time being, TMFB will NOT be suspending any food deliveries or pick-ups and will continue to provide our essential service of food rescue and redistribution • If any of our agencies temporarily close, change their hours, or make any other operational changes, these will be updated on our map • Neighbourhood food banks will be providing hampers of food based on the number of people in a household vs our typical method where clients “shop” for their choices of food. This is to minimize the length and proximity of interactions between clients and volunteers.

• TMFB has put protocols in place to ensure our facility and staff are healthy and safe, including enhanced cleaning and disinfecting measures across all public areas, regular disinfecting of high-traffic and frequently touched surfaces, providing hand sanitizer in various locations, visible signage throughout the building reminding people of preventative best practices such as regular hand washing and avoiding touching face, maintaining social distancing where possible, avoiding hand-shaking, moving meetings to teleconferences, using rubber gloves when handling food, and more.

If you have any questions about how TMFB is handling COVID-19/ Coronavirus, please don’t hesitate to contact us at 905-270-5589 or info@themississaugafoodbank.org. themississaugafoodbank.org

Where THERES A WILL ̦

theres a way! Article and Photography By Kristi Finch (Will’s Mother)

Meet 10 year old animal ambassador, WILL FINCH. At the age of 7, Will’s dreams of having a dog came true when his family brought home a puppy. His Mom named the puppy ‘Karma’ and explained to Will what ‘good karma’ meant. To be fair, at that time, the name of the puppy meant very little to Will. The only thing he could think of was loving his adorable new puppy.

Karma and Will were inseparable. They walked together, played together and Karma was always on his pillow at bedtime. After a few short weeks, Karma took a rather sudden and drastic turn towards illness. The Vet shared devastating news that Karma had the canine Parvovirus and likely was too small and young to survive. Regrettably, Karma died days later at home with his family. Although everyone was heartbroken, it hit Will the hardest. Through his tears, Will described that he felt “his heart was breaking inside his tummy.” Only then did he reflect on the name ‘Karma’. He felt that this was somehow ‘bad karma’ and he struggled with understanding why this happened to his dog and our family.

8

NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA

From this loss, Will set off on a mission to bring some ‘Good Will Good Karma’ to other animals. On his 8th birthday, in lieu of birthday presents, Will wished only for donations of food, supplies and money to donate to local animals in need. Since then, he has been making waves (or wagging tails) throughout the rescue community by showing up at events to volunteer and then surprising the rescues with generous donations.

Now, just 10 years old, Will has raised and donated close to $5,000! He volunteers his time as a cat cuddler for ‘All Paws Cat Rescue’, hosts bake sales, and helps with dog walking and care for ‘Fetch and ReLeash Dog Rescue’. Will also posts videos to feature animals in need of adoption and gives presentations about his rescues to various classes at his school (Levi Creek Public School). Will’s school and teachers have been an incredible support of his mission to rescue and educate.

Will has been featured on the radio station BOOM 97.3 and he recently appeared on Breakfast Television. He has social media campaigns on Facebook and Instagram managed by his big sister, Jada. ‘Good Will Good Karma’ also has a ‘Go Fund Me’ campaign. Will is honouring his dog Karma by inspiring and educating others of all ages to volunteer, donate, rescue, adopt and to be kind to animals.

COVID-19: A note from ‘Good Will Good Karma’ During this pandemic, rescues are struggling with donations as they aren’t able to run their usual community based fundraising events. Funds are low and demand for care is increasing dramatically. Rescues are working around the clock to do what they can but they need our help. In response, Will has initiated Facebook campaigns as well as a donation bin on our front porch.

IF YOU WISH TO MAKE A FINANCIAL DONATION, please go to our ‘Go Fund Me’ page (TUIT Tasks is paying the 3% admin fee charge) or you can e-transfer funds to willkarma2010@gmail.com. 100% of every dollar goes to our local rescues. Every dollar helps! /goodwillgoodkarma

M IS SIS S AUGA BY HELEN FILIPE

Amid these uncertain times, there are many heart-warming gestures and moments that continue to shine in South Mississauga. All of us at The Compass are thankful for continued donations, from caring individuals, groups, families and very generous local businesses. The past weeks have highlighted the need for our services. The Compass has seen a significant increase in food bank use, and knows it is important to be prepared to be able to assist even more people during this pandemic. Food insecurity is on the rise and we cannot predict how many new people will have to access our food bank in the coming weeks & months. The staff and volunteers are working tirelessly to make adjustments to best support our clients in need. To keep everyone safe during COVID-19 we’ve had to make some changes. Instead of coming in once a week to select their own items, clients make food requests ahead of time so their customized hamper is ready for a quick pick up. We are very fortunate to have fresh vegetables, fruit, bread, as well as frozen proteins like chicken, halal chicken, fish and ground pork; even eggs and milk. Our staff and volunteers are committed to continuing to serve the community as best they can. The Compass is grateful to the 100+ volunteers helping us to remain open, and to all donors who are making a significant impact. If you can, and are interested in helping us at this time, we encourage you to make a financial donation through our website - www.TheCompass.ca. Stay healthy and stay safe.

WAYS TO MAINTAIN YOUR

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL FITNESS DURING ISOLATION Here are some ways you can be sure to maintain or improve your physical and mental wellness during isolation The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted us all. For most of us, our schedules are all out of sorts and we don’t have access to the things we usually do. This may be a wide-open opportunity to develop habits that may negatively impact our health. Taking control of our wellness during this time is more crucial than ever!

12

NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA

Routine At a time like this it is vital to establish and maintain a regular routine. Start by going to bed at the same time each night and set an alarm to wake up each morning. Try to eat your meals at the same time throughout the day as well. As comfortable as it may be, get out of those pyjamas by a certain time each morning then get showered and dressed for the day. Keep an activity journal so you can set goals and keep track of your progress.

Be Mindful Although it is important to stay informed and aware of the latest recommendations, limiting time on social media and watching the news can help to minimize feelings of anxiety and stress. Reading a book, doing a puzzle and playing music are great ways to take your mind off of the negative.

Simple mindfulness exercises such as listening to or feeling your breath are great ways to reduce anxiety and bring a sense of calmness. Try breathing in for a count of three, hold your breath for a count of three and exhale very slowly for a count of five.

Exercise Purposeful exercise (e.g. 30 minutes of cardio) can improve your mood as well as help to maintain your health. Anything you can do to get the blood moving and heart pumping is going to help. If you are looking for something more intense, you can join my Instagram Live at 10 am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for a 30 minute HIIT session, and Tuesdays and Thursdays for a recovery session including mobility and stretch work. We’d love to have you take part. @PerformanceOneFitness

Nutrition Do your best to maintain structured meals. It’s easy to grab a cookie or some chips, so it’s important to minimize the amount of snacks and processed foods in the house. Before you reach for a snack, have a glass of water instead (most of the time you are just thirsty). Try a new recipe and learn to make a new meal. There a so many great recipes online to choose from. Plan out your meals for the week (or two) so you only have to make one grocery run. There are many fresh foods in season now that are far more nutritious than food from cans and boxes – and safe if cleaned well.

Education Challenge yourself to learn a new skill. Establish a new pattern maybe a new language that you’ve always wanted to learn. Read a book or watch a documentary. Anything to keep your mind stimulated and engaged.

Reflection Use this time to hit the reset button. Assess where your life is and where you want it to be. Have you drifted too far from your personal goals? Relationships? Work goals? Remember, we should be practicing physical distancing and doesbut low avoiding those who don’t, thatback doesn’tpain mean get Keep in the way with of your you can’t stay connected. in touch daily activities? friends, family and fitness coaches with a phone call, faceTime or text. there forCollaborative the ones Program who for TheBe Mississauga need you and let them be there for you.
