THOUSANDS MARCH TO PROTEST ANTIBLACK RACISM #BL ACK LIVESMAT TER

WE ARE NOW OPEN

Thousands of people marched through the streets of Mississauga’s downtown core to speak out against anti-Black racism in a peaceful protest this past June. The crowd started at noon and marched toward the Marilyn Monroe Towers, in the city’s downtown core, where they took a knee and paused for eight minutes and 46 seconds, the same amount of time a Minneapolis police officer kneeled on the neck of 46-year-old George Floyd before his death. The protest was just one of many demonstrations held across Canada and around the world.

Cook's Tip

You can use larger marshmallows, but be sure to cut them in half, as they will be easier to cook thoroughly. Also, you can use whatever you have on hand for dipping – BE CREATIVE!

THE PRETZELS ARE DELICIOUS WITH THE POP OF SALT!

Spotlight on Hope

Giving Back

When it Matters Most When COVID-19 hit, Maryann found herself — like many Canadians — without a job for the first time in years. In that moment, many would dwell on their own problems. But Maryann immediately thought of others in her community. "Growing up, I heard about ‘service to others’. My parents immigrated to Canada in the 1960s, and because of their sacrifices and Canada’s generosity, I have a better life." she says. "So I decided my downtime was an opportunity to give back and support Mississauga during a time when there is a growing need." Maryann is working in the Emergency Food Bank set up to serve the growing number of hungry neighbours coming to the warehouse in search of food during the pandemic.

"My contribution is small, but the sum of each person's contribution can amount to helping someone make a positive change in their life," she says.

Maryann is proud to be a part of The Mississauga Food Bank family. "It’s important to stand together and help our fellow community members in times of need," she shares. To Maryann, and every volunteer and donor selflessly caring for our vulnerable neighbours: You’re the heart and soul of The Mississauga Food Bank. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

Here's how you've made a difference during the COVID-19 crisis:

A S TA R IS B OR N BY JASON STACEY / PHOTOGRAPHY BY PEETER POLDRE

On Sunday, June 28 MPP for Mississauga-Lakeshore, Rudy Cuzzetto and the Mississauga Italian Canadian Benevolent Association hosted a drive-by parade to salute America’s Got Talent Golden Buzzer winner Roberta Battaglia. Roberta is a 10 year old Canadian singer who blew the AGT judges away with her performance of the Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper hit song ‘Shallow’. She impressed the judges, including Simon Cowell, so much they rewarded her with the Golden Buzzer, sending her straight to Hollywood. Congratulations Roberta! We’ll all be watching as you continue your path to stardom.

Canada Day in Port Credit By Jason Stacy | Photography by Peeter Poldre

Canada Day was a lot quieter this year as communities across the country attempted to limit the spread of the coronavirus. The pandemic forced the cancellation of Port Credit’s ‘Paint the Town Red’ Canada Day celebrations, including the parade and the very popular fireworks, which bring in thousands of spectators each year. Despite the unusual emptiness along the Lakeshore, Neighbourhood magazine photographer Peeter Poldre was able to find displays of Canadian pride in the form of red and white and the maple leaf throughout the community.
