Family Caregiver Burnout In Canada, over 3.3 million people provide physical or mental health support to a senior family member, partner/spouse, or friend and many don’t consider themselves “caregivers” - they are family or friends doing what needs to be done. Balancing their own family life, work, etc., while being a family caregiver isn’t an easy job at all. Many family caregivers get overwhelmed and find it difficult to ask for help. If the stress of caregiving is left unchecked, it can take a toll on health, relationships, and state of mind, eventually leading to burnout. That’s why taking care of oneself isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity. Accepting help is okay Asking for and accepting help does not make for a bad family caregiver. Many people are unaware of in-home care providers and the types of services they offer, so don’t be afraid to make the call! Get connected There are many resources for overwhelmed caregivers such as support groups, help outlets like the Ontario Caregiver Organization, in-home care providers like Senior Helpers Mississauga, and more.
Set personal health goals The main things family caregivers forget is their own health, so start by setting some personal health goals to focus on. These could include tasks such as taking a 10 minute walk every day or eating three full meals every day. Watch for signs of burnout Burnout is a state of physical, emotional and mental exhaustion among caregivers, and sadly it’s very common. Burnout can lead to fatigue, depression, and anxiety which is why it’s important to watch out for the signs within yourself and your caregiver friends. Some signs to look out for are: • • • • • •
Overreacting to minor annoyances Insomnia New/worsening health problems Withdrawal from friends/other family members Loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities Changes in appetite
A family caregiver is an incredibly important role. Ensuring that they are at their best mentally and physically is best for them, and for the loved one they are caring for!

GREEN TOOLS Pilot Project
Give Her a Gift as Unique as She Is
By Mississauga.ca
Mississauga Introduces Electric Grass Cutting Tools Pilot to Trim Carbon Emissions The City of Mississauga has launched their Green Tools pilot project which introduces all-electric, battery-powered grass cutting equipment to Parks staff who maintain the parks. Over the next few years, the City will be transitioning grass-cutting equipment to all-electric, battery-powered equipment upon their lifecycle replacements. The transition to all-electric, battery-powered equipment will reduce carbon emissions, limit noise and increase safety for Parks staff. The new equipment includes two riding zero-turn mowers, a push mower, leaf blowers and trimmers. The project aligns with the City’s Climate Change Action Plan’s goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80 per cent by 2050, with the long-term aspirational goal of becoming a netzero community. Over the past few years, the City has made good progress in combating climate change by implementing a Green Fleet and Equipment Policy, introducing hybrid-electric MiWay buses and planting trees through the City’s One Million Trees program. The City of Mississauga is committed to providing first-class outdoor amenities while continuing to look for ways to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions. The City’s Parks Operations section maintains 3,154 hectares (7,794 acres) of parkland—including more than 500 parks, 371 sports fields, 327 km of trails, 263 play sites, 12 cemeteries and two marinas. CANADA DAY! Article and Photography By Peeter Poldre
Canada Day in Port Credit was doubly subdued this year. Because of the pandemic, the traditional Paint the Town Red events that usually bring in thousands of visitors was cancelled for the second year in a row. In addition, flags were at half mast while our nation reflected on the mistreatment of its indigenous population.

Despite the somber mood, many still donned the red and white in gratitude of what Canada has meant to them while hoping for reconciliation going forward toward a brighter future for every Canadian.
