Bottle Drive raises money for Camp Ooch BY JASON STACEY
Each year, around this time, Clarkson Secondary School holds their Cancer Drive where the students and staff raise money for Camp Ooch, a charity that gives the gift of camp to kids with childhood cancers. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, this is the first year the Cancer Drive hasn’t been able to happen. Thankfully, the same spirit that helped raise upwards of $30,000 each year for the drive, inspired former Clarkson Charger, Kaitlyn Stegmaier to start a bottle drive to raise money for the camp. What started off as a small community initiative, quickly grew into a massive fundraiser that brought in donations from all across the GTA. The fundraiser has raised $5,500.45 and would not have been possible without the help from Kaitlyn’s friends: Alana Rizos, Alex Townsend, Derrick Mundle, Ellen Raymond, Kaitlyn Green, Kelly Bingham, Lauren Weaver, Logan Deelstra, Madison Stegmaier, Michaela Laurie, Jerome Knight and Nancy Hills. A HOM E M ARK ET BY LAUREN THOMSON
During this pandemic, stress is at an all-time high around the country and around the world. It’s especially hard for those with compromised or weak immune systems, children and seniors. To help ease the stress, Turtle Creek Manor has opened up their own market, the “Turtle Creek Market”, for their tenants. Turtle Creek Manor is a senior’s independent apartment building to more than 90 seniors, owned and operated by Wawel Villa Incorporated, located in the Clarkson Village area of Mississauga. The Turtle Creek Market provides various groceries, fruits, vegetables, meats, juices, and household supplies, to name a few. New items are added almost every week and if there is anything we don’t have, our tenants can ask for it and most times we are able to get it for them. Tenants fill out their grocery list that is delivered to them each week and orders are fulfilled on Wednesday’s. With the market providing tenants with whatever groceries and supplies they need, it allows them to stay home and stay safe. So far, the market has been a success as the tenants greatly rely on this home market initiative. “We are able to remain in our homes as suggested by the government which would have been impossible,” says Betty Hunt, the first ever tenant to move into the building. “Most of our tenants have no family close by so we would have had to go out to get supplies. Tara and her great crew are doing a wonderful job running the market. They are holding to the plan and requirements regarding personal space and have assessed our need in produce and many other grocery items.” Marjorie MacDonald, another Turtle Creek Manor resident, adds “It means not going out early in the morning and lining up in the cold and wind.” Her children help when they can, but having the market has helped ensure that Marjorie is getting the supplies she needs. Both Hunt, MacDonald and many other tenants have expressed their gratitude for opening the market and taking all precautions to keep everyone in the building safe and healthy. The market is run by Property Manager, Tara Thomson, along with her children Lauren and Vincent Thomson. With Lauren and Vincent volunteering, it helps to eliminate a COVID-19 variable of other volunteers coming into the building and potentially putting the tenants at risk. Superintendents, Rhéa Ryckman and Lea Mousseau, also help with the market. They call tenants to let them know their order is ready or to deliver groceries to their door if they require help or are unable to pick them up. Although COVID-19 has brought many challenges to our world, initiatives like the Turtle Creek Market continue to showcase a willingness to help those in need.

#MississaugaChallenge
RAISES $1.2 MILLION in Support of
THE MISSISSAUGA FOOD BANK Article by Meghan Nicholls | The Mississauga Food Bank

NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA
At a press conference on May 28, campaign leads Mayor Bonnie Crombie and Mohamad Fakih, CEO of Paramount Fine Foods announced that the #MississaugaChallenge which set out to raise $840,000 to support the urgent needs of The Mississauga Food Bank has surpassed it’s second goal and raised over $1.2 million.
“In record-breaking time with support from the local community, The Mississauga Food Bank will be able to provide food for over 2,000,000 meals to our hungry neighbours. Thank you for your trust and investing in us, to make sure that children, seniors, families, and neighbours in Mississauga have access to healthy and nutritious food,” says Meghan Nicholls, Executive Director of The Mississauga Food Bank.
“We would not have been able to reach our goal without the help of local community groups, businesses, corporations, and individuals who have stepped up to the plate and joined the #MississaugaChallenge. While we all work through these challenging times and the uncertainty that this pandemic has brought among us, this challenge has shown us that Mississauga is a city that truly cares and steps up in times of need,” says Mayor Bonnie Crombie.
Funds raised throughout the #MississaugaChallenge are already being invested into the local community through distributing food for OVER 500,000 meals, plus allowing us to: • Purchase bulk food at discounted pricing • Invest in the purchase of PPE equipment, increased sanitation and cleaning • Adapt from a shopping model to a hamper model with enhanced safety measures • Launch our emergency food bank seeing 40 families daily • Scale our Food Bank 2 Home delivery program from 46 to 448 households • Invest in new partnerships with non-agency members to expand reach • Grant out one-time funds to our network to support unique operational needs • Increase communication with those in poverty
WE WOULD LIKE TO THANK EVERYONE WHO ACCEPTED THE CHALLENGE and became one of the 3,000+ individuals, 100+ businesses and corporations, and 30+ community, religious groups, non-profits, and foundations who pledged their support. Thank you to those who have made sizeable gifts over $1,000 or fundraised on our behalf for the #MississaugaChallenge that helped us reach over $1,200,000!
“When I launched the #MississaugaChallenge with Mayor Bonnie Crombie last month, I wanted to do everything in my power to support The Mississauga Food Bank during this critical time. Mississauga, you accepted the challenge and you delivered as usual. Not only did we meet our initial goal, but we raised an additional $325,000+ when we realized even more families needed us. That is why I picked this city and country to build a business and a family in – because together like a family, we stand as one and support one another,” says Mohamad Fakih, CEO of Paramount Fine Foods. We will continue to strategically invest and raise additional funds to respond to both the growing and emerging trends of food insecurity across the region.
About The Mississauga Food Bank The Mississauga Food Bank is the central food bank in Mississauga. Through its network of 45 agencies – including neighbourhood food banks, hot meal programs, and breakfast clubs – they distribute food for over 2.9 million meals each year. NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA

Car after car made their way through the parade holding signs, cheering and honking their horns including Raptors Superfan, Nav Bhatia. Everyone including nursing, housekeeping and dietary staff have done an amazing job in keeping their residents safe and the Activities Department has done an awesome job of keeping the residents entertained and informed.Â

Over these past many weeks our lives have changed profoundly. Our number one priority is staying well and ensuring we don’t contribute to the spread of COVID-19. Staying home has come to mean staying safe and those who do venture out do so out of necessity, taking an abundance of precautions.
We continue to have deep appreciation for our frontline workers who are enabling us to get through this worldwide pandemic. Our medical professionals, paramedics, PSWs, firefighters, police and those who bravely risk their own health to keep us well have our full support. A new level of appreciation for grocery store, pharmacy, postal, delivery, volunteers and varied essential workers has given us the opportunity to say thank you more often. Many businesses in our communities have felt the economic impact of the pandemic. Buying local has never been so important. Phone and online orders are happily filled, contactless pick up and delivery get the goods to us.
Purchasing a gift card, ordering in for a meal or stopping by an open business to show your support are all valued gestures. These actions will help keep our local businesses afloat until regular business can resume. Whether you are social distancing from seniors, family members and friends, home schooling or working from home, collectively we draw strength from being in this together. Phone calls, texts, emails and zoom help us to feel connected. The creativity and humour being shared at this time helps to lift our spirits. The abundance of acts of generosity, caring and concern speak to our Canadian resiliency and strength. We see healthy days ahead.
