LIVE FROM RATTRAY MARSH -

Article and Photography by Peeter Poldre

ANWAR KNIGHT! Anwar Knight’s genuine and engaging personality is a favourite with television viewers nationwide. A passionate eco ambassador, he hopes his efforts will help propel crucial action to help the earth.

In addition to hosting his "Big Blue Marble" podcast, the award-winning broadcaster just launched a ground breaking digital show on his Facebook page – "Here n' There", which streams LIVE at noon each Friday. The show is a unique field trip allowing viewers to interact with Anwar as he explores the many wonderful greenspaces in the region. Insatiably curious, Anwar is an incredible storyteller.

"IT’S AMAZING HOW BENEFICIAL CONNECTING WITH NATURE CAN BE," remarked Anwar. 6

"This show is like a digital window to the world for those who can’t go outside because of COVID restrictions." Friday, March 5th’s episode saw Anwar, a Mississauga resident, in the Rattray Marsh discussing the work of the Credit Valley Conservation who are working on the Emerald Ash Borer Restoration Project and removing dead standing ash trees.

IS A B ELL BY THE COMPASS FOOD BANK

Each and every client who uses the services at The Compass Food Bank and Outreach Centre is an important member of our community. From time to time we would like to share their stories so that you can get to know them too. Isabell Wdowczyk, who turned 81 on Valentine’s Day, has lived in Port Credit for 23 years. She began using the services at The Compass three years ago after her partner suffered a heart attack and as she says, everything quickly fell apart. Because of the heart attack, her partner was no longer able to work and pay his half of the rent. Isabell remembers how emotionally difficult it was the first time she came to The Compass for food. “When I came in I was balling,” she said. “How could this happen to me? Why is this happening to me?” Initially, Isabell felt quite depressed and thought she would never get over it, but after a few months she started volunteering at The Compass which she says made her feel much better. She has also learned that it’s okay to ask for help when you need it. Now Isabell is a regular volunteer, taking on all tasks but she especially enjoys washing dishes and cleaning the kitchen. Isabell loves the people she has met and says she would come to The Compass 24/7 if she could. Isabell’s weekly groceries from The Compass usually include eggs, chicken or fish, pasta, pasta sauce and canned salmon. She loves to cook and says she is good at making something special out of just about anything. In the summer Isabell likes to walk from Port Credit to The Compass but in the colder months she takes the bus and is grateful for the bus ticket that The Compass is able to provide for her trip home. The Compass is privileged to serve and assist wonderful clients like Isabell.

THE GREAT BACKYARD BIRD COUNT IS AN ANNUAL 4-DAY GLOBAL EFFORT (over 250,000 contributors in 176 countries) that provides scientists with a GPScoordinated snapshot of the world’s bird population in mid-February. In Canada since 2009 it has been a joint partnership between the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Birds Canada. Scientists can superimpose weather maps using the GPS-defined location of one’s count to better understand the relationship between bird populations and the climate. In addition to counting birds in a location, typically a backyard, for a minimum of 15 minutes, photos can be submitted to the Cornell Lab to complement the count.
