Over these past many weeks our lives have changed profoundly. Our number one priority is staying well and ensuring we don’t contribute to the spread of COVID-19. Staying home has come to mean staying safe and those who do venture out do so out of necessity, taking an abundance of precautions.
We continue to have deep appreciation for our frontline workers who are enabling us to get through this worldwide pandemic. Our medical professionals, paramedics, PSWs, firefighters, police and those who bravely risk their own health to keep us well have our full support. A new level of appreciation for grocery store, pharmacy, postal, delivery, volunteers and varied essential workers has given us the opportunity to say thank you more often. Many businesses in our communities have felt the economic impact of the pandemic. Buying local has never been so important. Phone and online orders are happily filled, contactless pick up and delivery get the goods to us.

Purchasing a gift card, ordering in for a meal or stopping by an open business to show your support are all valued gestures. These actions will help keep our local businesses afloat until regular business can resume. Whether you are social distancing from seniors, family members and friends, home schooling or working from home, collectively we draw strength from being in this together. Phone calls, texts, emails and zoom help us to feel connected. The creativity and humour being shared at this time helps to lift our spirits. The abundance of acts of generosity, caring and concern speak to our Canadian resiliency and strength. We see healthy days ahead.

#MississaugaChallenge Raises $840K in Support of THE MISSISSAUGA FOOD BANK Led by Mayor Bonnie Crombie & Mohamad Fakih, #MississaugaChallenge Reaches Initial Goal Article by Meghan Nicholls | The Mississauga Food Bank 6
NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA
Earlier this month, Mayor Bonnie Crombie and Mohamad Fakih, CEO of Paramount Fine Foods, launched the #MississaugaChallenge intending to raise $840,000 to support the urgent needs of The Mississauga Food Bank.
In record time, the campaign has reached its initial goal which will provide food for 1,680,000 meals to feed our hungry neighbours throughout the COVID-19 crisis. “The food bank is overwhelmed with the outcry of support from generous community members that help us get through these critical times. As needs continue to evolve, the food bank is reacting quickly to ensure access to food and everyone’s safety during the crisis. We’ve opened an emergency food bank, doubled our home deliveries through our Food Bank 2 Home program, and continue to see the rising need,” says Meghan Nicholls, Executive Director.
“It is incredible that Mississauga was able to step up to the plate and raise $840,000 in a few short weeks. If we were able to rally together and get this far, we can surely make it to $1.165M. We are already well on our way towards this new goal. Who is with me?”, challenges Mohamad Fakih, CEO of Paramount Fine Foods. Now, more than ever The Mississauga Food Bank needs the entire community to come together to continue to feed our hungry neighbours. DO YOU ACCEPT THE CHALLENGE?
With Canada’s announcement to extend the country’s state of emergency, the food bank is anticipating a greater need for months to come as more people experience unemployment and economic hardship. The Mississauga Food Bank is putting out an urgent call to continue to fundraise with an updated total campaign goal of $1.165M.
"With OVER 7.1 MILLION PEOPLE
filing for the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) since it opened earlier this month, more of our residents are relying on food banks. With the end of the month quickly approaching, many are struggling to pay rent and make ends meet. While I am pleased that in record time, we reached our initial goal, this crisis has lasted longer than we expected, and as a result, so will the need. I want to thank everyone who has donated to The Mississauga Food Bank during this challenging time and urge those who have the means to continue to do so. They need our help now more than ever,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie.

THE FR ONT STEPS P R OJE C T What started out as a simple idea to photograph neighbours from their front steps has quickly turned into a global movement that has brought people together virtually when physical distancing keeps us apart. BY JASON STACEY PHOTOGRAPHY BY FOTOREFLECTION.COM
The Front Steps Project (#thefrontstepsproject) was born in March by a group of women in Needham, Massachusetts, US as a fundraiser for their local community council. It was a way to give back to their community during these uncertain times and it’s by that spirit so many photographers around the world, including Canadian Moussa Faddoul of Fotoreflection, have decided to carry the torch in their own communities.
“I wanted to do something creative that involved families in our community,” exclaims Moussa. “When I discovered ‘The Front Steps Project’ I knew I had found the answer I was looking for.” According to Moussa, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Families have been happy to participate and extremely grateful. “Some just needed a reason to dress up, get the kids out of the house, and document this time in their lives for keepsake,” he remarks. “Others never had a family portrait together before and found the initiative to be timely.”

NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA
During his photo sessions, Moussa found many families to be enjoying the simple connections on the front steps, huddling together, making silly faces, or sharing hopeful messages of encouragement they wrote on boards. In exchange for the professional image, the families are asked to donate to a local charity. Moussa Faddoul grew up in Lebanon, a war-torn country where people spent weeks, sometimes months confined to their homes or in bomb shelters without electricity, easy access to food, clean water or the communication tools we have today. Despite the hardships of war, Moussa recalls a unifying spirit that helped get people through those dark times. “Almost everyone I know from those days shares a common expression, ‘We miss those days.’ People were closer and looked after one another. They were not afraid to dodge snipers bullets to bring a bag of flour or a cup of rice to a neighbour in need. That spirit of selflessness and other-centeredness gets people through anything. I see that spirit at work today.” ►

As we continue to work together to get through these challenging times, people are finding creative ways to help their neighbours and reach out to those in need. Thanks to people like Moussa Faddoul, we will get through not only this pandemic but also anything else that faces our communities.
“We’re stronger together,” says Moussa. “Be patient, support one another and trust that better days are coming.”

BIRTHDAY PARTY IDEAS DURING ISOLATION
Who would have ever thought we would be planning birthday parties without a gathering? Not me. But with a birthday to celebrate at the end of April, we sat down and put our thinking caps on to come up with ways to make it equally as awesome.
Here are some great ideas for planning a birthday celebration while social distancing. 12
NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA
Start with the Invitation Since the birthday boy or girl can’t physically hand out their party invitations, an e-vite is the next best thing. I suggest using Wish & Give. Their online e-vites encourage attendees to donate to the birthday child’s gift and their charity of choice. If your child has their eyes on that very expensive LEGO set, this is a great way to get them their perfect gift from all of their friends!
Decorate Go all out with the décor. This is no time to scrimp on the streamers! Wait till they’ve gone to bed and watch their surprise in the morning!
Plan a YES Day Have you had a Yes Day before? It’s simple. Anything your child asks, you say Yes to (within reason). “Mom, can I have chocolate for breakfast?” Yes! “Dad,
want to play ball in the yard?” Yes! Other requests, like seeing friends, may need a “Yes, once this is all over”, but this is a sure-fire way to have a positive birthday.
Bring the Movie Theatre Home If your child is a movie fan, they’ll love to stream a movie! There are so many amazing streaming sources to watch movies for free or for a small fee, on-demand. Universal Studios Entertainment is releasing movies that are “still in theatre” to streaming services On Demand. Once the movie is chosen, turn your living room into a theatre by closing your curtains and blinds to make the room dark. Make sure to pop some popcorn or get the real stuff delivered from Film.ca, and of course, don’t forget the candy and drinks. ACTION!
Chalk Art Messages from Friends I loved seeing the creativity of the #chalkyourwalk movement – so use it to display birthday messages! Drive over to a friend’s house and #chalkTHEIRwalk! Send them some birthday love from 6+ feet away on their special day.
Order Take Out/Curbside Dining from their Favourite Local Restaurant Delicious food is always a great way to make a birthday celebration successful. Thankfully, many restaurants are still open and offering delivery and pick up. Go to the restaurant’s website to see if they are open or check out my facebook page with a list of restaurants still open.
Organize the Great Canadian Bake-Off! If your kid loves to bake, or just loves to laugh, why not have a baking challenge with their friends? First, contact the parents to arrange a FaceTime or Zoom party time. Next, drop off all of the cake baking needs and decorations (while maintaining your distance). The party starts with everyone having their naked cake ready to decorate. The mess, the laughter, and the friends will make for some great memories. You can even record the Zoom call! You can also have cookie dough delivered from a local bakery.
Balloons Balloons brighten anyone’s day and Ettridges has kept up their balloon creations and delivery during this time. Daffy Dill The Clown is our favourite balloon twister and she can deliver unicorns, princesses, rainbows and more!
Have a Netflix Party Netflix Party is a new way to watch Netflix with friends online. Netflix Party synchronizes video playback and adds a group chat to your favourite Netflix shows. Kids can watch and message the group at the same time. You can even deliver some movie-watching supplies like popcorn, candy and drinks to all the kids in the party. Bonus points for a small pizza!
Our world we live in may be changing, but celebrating people should never go away. Use the many resources out there to make someone’s special day one of the best they ever had.
