Lest We Forget By Leslie Styles
On November 11th, thousands gathered in downtown Burlington to pay tribute to the brave soldiers who fought, many giving their lives, for the freedoms we have today.
6
NeighbourhoodMagazine.ca
The first big snow of the season fell during the early morning Remembrance Service in Spencer Smith Park and continued throughout the day. Brant Street was blocked off at Baldwin for a short parade of veterans, police, cadets and the Teen Tour Band. An hour long ceremony, including laying of wreaths, took place at the Cenotaph just outside City Hall. It was a day to show our appreciation for all those who have stood on guard for us throughout history, preserving our precious freedom.

SANTA Arrives in Style By Leslie Styles
In keeping with the city’s tradition, Santa arrived by helicopter at Burlington Centre Mall this past November among hundreds of eager fans. The chopper circled in the air several times, creating lots of excitement before finally landing to the delight of the crowd. Led by the Redcoats Teen Band, Jolly Old Saint Nicholas made his way through the crowds and then into the mall to meet with all the youngsters who were eagerly waiting to speak with him and get their picture taken. Santa will be at his workshop in the mall until December 24th. Please see burlingtoncentre.ca for information on Santa hours.
Salvation Army’s
KETTLE KICKOFF By Leslie Styles / Photography by David Joubarne
Game on! 99-year old Lil Utman dropped the puck at center ice to begin the 2019 Salvation Army’s Kettle Kickoff at Appleby Ice Centre on November 15th. This also began Friday night’s game between Burlington Cougars and the Georgetown Raiders. Accompanying Lil to centre ice was a crew of Salvationists and Salvation Army supporters including Major Jacobs, the Downhams, Fire Chief Lazenby, Deputy Mayor Kelvin Galbraith, Kettle Coordinator Laura Oros and son Daniel. Lil, who will celebrate her 100th birthday next June, is the Army’s number one soldier having helped start up the church in 1967. Remarkably, she participates with the choir, organizes square dancing nights, volunteers for the Kettles and also finds time to cheer on the Ticats, Blue Jays and Leafs.

The Culinary Showdown! - Cynthia Milburn, CEO
Epilepsy South Central Ontario hosted its inaugural Culinary Showdown at the Oakville Convention Centre with SMEG as the sponsor. The Culinary Showdown included an all-star lineup of famous Celebrity Chefs who were joined by the top fifty fundraisers for an action-packed day and evening. The day began with a cooking school for the fundraisers as they moved from the five stations, learning some of the tricks of the trade by celebrity chefs, Claudio Aprile, Massimo Capra, Mary Berg, Alvin Leung, and Michael Smith. The evening was a fast-paced MasterChef-style competition, hosted by John O’Hurley and with Team Claudio Aprile taking home the coveted trophy. All proceeds will help the important services and support provided by the Epilepsy SCO.
HOT OFF THE PRESS… next year’s date for the Culinary Showdown is November 24, 2020. Mark your calendars now for this incredible event.

WITH
VIVE FITNESS BURLINGTON
Above: Eva and Tom, owners of Vive Fitness Burlington
Tell us your story and how you came to open a Burlington location of Vive Fitness? We opened Vive fitness because we have a passion for fitness. We have been married for 17 years and have constantly been in love with the natural health and fitness industry. We both had some health issues in our 20s and overcame them with natural medicine, healthy lifestyle, and exercise. We left our careers in Law and Nursing and pursued degrees in natural medicine. Today we own two health food stores, a naturopathic clinic and a gym. We transformed our lives with natural health and fitness and it is our mission to help the community experience amazing transformation and maximum vitality.
Why Vive Fitness? What attracted you to the chain? Eva’s twin sister and her husband started Vive Fitness 12 years ago in downtown Toronto. They opened 6 locations in Toronto, Etobicoke and Mississauga and got an amazing response from their local communities, so it was only natural for us to join the family business.

A CHRISTMAS EVENT at Ireland House By Leslie Styles
Crowds flocked to Ireland House Museum’s annual A Christmas Event this November. Parents and children lined up to meet Santa and tell him of their Christmas wishes. Mr. and Mrs. Claus had brought along one of their young reindeer from the North Pole. A horse-drawn wagon from Lionel’s Farm was kept busy giving rides all afternoon. Children roasted marshmallows at the open fire while listening to Carollers from M&J Music Studio. Indoors, holiday tours of the decorated museum were conducted. Downstairs in the Rumford hearth, staff members Miriam and Sarah baked maple sugar cookies for guests to sample and hot chocolate was served on the way out. Many admired the vintage 1953 fire truck on site, and shoppers were able to pick out gifts at the stocking stuffer mini market. It was an engaging afternoon, endowing visitors with the Yuletide spirit.

ARE YOU DOING ENOUGH? Estate Planning is an ongoing process, it’s never done. Here are some clues that you haven’t done enough:
ONE - You don’t have a Will or Powers of Attorney in place. These legal documents are the foundation of every estate plan. TWO - You’re not thinking about the “Why”. Your legacy is the bigger story about the values and traditions that you are passing on. THREE - You’re relying on dangerous assumptions “We always thought he’d die first.” “The kids will be able to figure it out.” Assumptions like these create blindspots and mean we are not prepared for a wider range of possible outcomes. Brown Lawyers are purposeful planners taking clients on a journey that will last far beyond their own years. Write your own last chapter. CONTACT BROWN LAWYERS TO BOOK A CONSULTATION TODAY!
