Pinball lovers were in their glory at the sold-out ‘Beer and Pinball’ evening of January 10, held at the recently renovated Joseph Brant Museum. The rock-themed, playable pinball machines, on loan from Cleveland’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, featured the Beatles, Metallica, Kiss, Aerosmith and more. The 55 guests made up a small enough group that each was able to practice and learn the machines, improving their game with each repetition, no coins needed. The evening was all about operating the vintage games, sipping on craft beer from Highlander Brew Co, and socializing over popcorn and chicken wings in the Lakefront Room. Door prizes were given and there was also merchandise and artifacts related to artists and bands.

Spotlight Q& A My name is Cynthia Davidson, Owner and Certified Travel Counsellor at Beaches and Beyond. Our team has been planning the most amazing vacations for more than 15 years. We curate all types of vacations including all-inclusive packages; cruises (river & ocean); destination weddings; honeymoons; tours; adventure trips; group travel and more!! During our time in the business, we have noticed a huge trend in responsible and sustainable travel and unlike many others, have become very passionate about it. The average traveller is starting to realize the impact they have when visiting different destinations. With this awareness, many want to travel with meaning by supporting different cultures, all while ensuring the well-being of locals, animals and the environment.
Beaches
& Beyond CHANGING LIVES THROUGH TRAVEL By Cynthia Davidson, Owner & Certified Travel Counsellor at Beaches & Beyond www.beachesandbeyond.ca
Many people today make a conscious effort when it comes to purchasing products they use in their daily lives. Everything from the food they eat, to the personal care products they thoroughly select. With this social consciousness, there appears to be a focus on choosing healthy, being mindful of where products come from, and an appetite to learn more about how products are made. This awareness has entered into the world of travel and it’s now possible to travel responsibly as well. 6

One of the most impactful tour companies, one we love sending clients on tour with, is G Adventures. They offer small group tours with several travel styles to suit all types of travellers (kids included!). Whether you would like to be super active by climbing mountains or living like a local and immersing yourself in native culture, Beaches and Beyond will help you choose what’s right for you. While you can get to all the famous landmarks and visit the most popular places, you can do it in a way that helps support the destination you are travelling to and explore many that are off-the-beaten-path. G Adventures has come up with something they call a RIPPLE SCORE – the higher the score, the more money that stays in the local community – changing lives through travel. Each trip is given a ‘Ripple Score’. If it’s not at 100%, they continuously look for ways to increase the score. Our most memorable trip with G Adventures took us on a journey throughout Peru. Yes, we saw the ‘touristy’ things Peru is most known for - The Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu and Cuzco - but, we stayed at locally owned and operated hotels, ate at locally owned and operated restaurants, and our favourite was our visit to the Women’s Weaving Co-op in Ccaccaccollo. G Adventures employ many local men from this community to be porters and cooks on

the Inca Trail. It was soon realized that the women of this community were struggling. Planeterra is a non-profit organization fully sponsored by G Adventures. They are the organization that helped this small group of women by funding training programs to bring back the weaving traditions that had been lost over the previous generations. G Adventures, in turn, brings many of the travellers visiting the area to the Co-op so they can learn all about the weaving process (learning the culture) and see the impact Planeterra’s support has had. Travellers are then given an opportunity to purchase high quality textiles directly from the women who made the product (sustaining the community). You can read more about this project and how well the women of this community are doing here: planeterra.org/what-we-do/ our-projects/womens-weaving-workshop/ In May 2020, we are thrilled to explore South Africa with G Adventures. We’re super excited to search for the BIG FIVE (call us to learn what the Big Five are if you don’t know!) in Kruger National Park while we do an ethical safari, being ever conscious of wildlife. As G Adventures says “Wildlife has a right to a wild life.” Having worked with The Jane Goodall Institute, World Ani-
mal protection, and The World Cetacean Alliance, G Adventures created their Animal Welfare Policy to ensure all activities offered that involve animals never exploit wildlife. We will also visit Johannesburg, Cape Town and then head into Zimbabwe to Victoria Falls. We would love for you to follow our adventures on Instagram at @ beaches_and_beyond and on Facebook at @beachesbeyond.
"Don’t just see the world. Make it better." - G Adventures
Before heading to South Africa, we of course are partnering with Planeterra to help support one of their newest projects for the youth: “Newington Youth - Kruger area”. If you would like to help, you can do so by giving up your coffee or lunch for just ONE day. Your smallest one-time donation will make the biggest impact to help the youth in these communities gain practical job skills. Travellers will support this project by purchasing their lunch prepared by the students and young entrepreneurs. The income generated will support the computer lab needed as 90% of these youth do not have access to a computer – a serious barrier to access education and bursary opportunities. You can learn more (or send your kind donation) here: planeterra.org/campaign/ beaches-and-beyond-fundraiser/ Just because we love G Adventures so much, we are giving away a FREE TRIP with them to Costa Rica – airfare included! Enter to win at beachesandbeyond.ca/contest Whether you’re looking to plan an amazing adventure, a relaxing beach vacation or a trip to sail around the seven seas, our team has options to take you BEYOND YOUR DREAMS!! We help you create new memories for life! Be sure to check out our AD on page 9.

GORDON SCHOTTLANDER Article by Burlington Mayor Marianne Meed Ward Photography by Jessica Douglas Photography
On January 11th, I had the absolute honour and pleasure to present beloved Burlington veteran Gordon Schottlander the first Key to the City for 2020. Making the day even more special, it was during a celebration for his 95th birthday. Thank you Gordon, for all that you have done for our community and this city, and for your service to our country. Please see the citation below and learn more about Mr. Schottlander: Mr. Gordon Schottlander was born in England in 1925. On June 6th, 1944, as a commissioned officer, he landed on Juno Beach and fought bravely alongside Canadian soldiers as part of the D-Day invasion that would lead to the successful end of the Second World War. He later came to Canada with his wife Colleen, building a big and wonderful family here that now includes four sons, 16 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. He continued his contributions to the community once arriving in Burlington. His many accomplishments include President of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the Burlington Planning Board, serving with the Knights of Columbus for many years, Chairman of the committee that raised over $1 million for the local YMCA, and being named Burlington’s Citizen of the Year in 1968. He continues to make Burlington his home, living in the downtown core. While celebrating his 95th birthday in January of this year, he was presented with a proclamation and Key to the City for his meaningful and lasting contributions — Mayor Marianne Meed Ward

In the bird kingdom section, kids were greeted with a “Hello” from Ray, the talking green winged macaw from the Bird Kingdom in Niagara Falls. Raymond seemed a perfect name until an unexpected egg appeared in her area. Now she’s Ray. The kids were also excited to see Curious George, Buddy the Dinosaur and Clifford, that Big Red Dog from PBS Kids. Other activities included face painting, a clown toss game, books, balloons, and all the things kids love to do. For those who worked up an appetite, there was a full menu offered in the Greenhouse Cafe.

Black History Month the Toronto-area riding of Etobicoke-Lakeshore, winning four consecutive elections until her retirement from politics in 2006. Jean’s work as a parliamentarian included service as Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister, Minister and Secretary of State for Multiculturalism and the Status of Women, Chair of the Foreign Affairs and International Trade Committee and Chair of the National Women’s Caucus. In her final year, Jean was elected Deputy Speaker by her peers.
The Honourable
Jean Augustine
Queen’s Privy Council, Companion of the Order of Canada www.jeanaugustine.ca
Jean Augustine’s story is a testament to the power of hard work and devotion in pursuit of social justice. Born in St. George’s, Grenada in 1937, Jean lost her father at a young age, but blossomed into an outstanding young student raised by a wise grandmother. In 1960, already a qualified teacher, Jean immigrated to Canada through the Canada-Caribbean Domestic Program. With focus, she attended Toronto Teachers College and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Toronto. Jean earned her Master’s in Education degree while working as an elementary school teacher with the Metropolitan Separate School Board in Toronto. She would later become principal/supervisory officer

while remaining deeply involved in grassroots efforts in the community. Jean’s contributions extended to many social causes. She was an active member on boards including York University Board of Trustees, The Hospital for Sick Children, the Donwood Institute, Harbourfront; and served as Chair of the Metropolitan Toronto Housing Authority. She was the National President of the Congress of Black Women of Canada. Her capacities were recognized by government leaders who requested her assistance when undertaking important initiatives -- the development and launch of Canada’s official multiculturalism policy in 1971; member of the Ontario Judicial Council; the Toronto Crime Inquiry; and the training of teachers in Equity and Diversity. In 1993, Jean Augustine made history. She became the first African Canadian woman elected to Canada’s House of Commons. She served as the Member of Parliament for
Amongst her notable achievements was legislation to protect low-income individuals including single mothers. Jean used skilful negotiation to garner unanimous support to pass a historic motion designating February as Black History Month in Canada. Jean also championed legislation to erect the Famous Five statue, the only statue featuring women on Parliament Hill. Jean donated her parliamentary papers to York University’s Faculty of Education, thus creating the Jean Augustine Chair in Education in the New Urban Environment. This Chair supports research on issues related to education policy, immigration and cultural diversity. In 2007, the Government of Ontario asked Jean to lead the commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the British slave trade. Later that year, she was appointed the first Fairness Commissioner for the Province of Ontario. Jean set new regulatory standards for clarity, openness and streamlined access to employment conditions for foreign trained professionals. Jean served as Fairness Commissioner until her retirement in 2015. In 2009, Jean was appointed as a Member of the Order of Canada for her extensive contribution to Canadian society as a politician, educator and advocate for social justice. She received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012, and in 2014 was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire for her services to education and politics. Today, Jean remains involved with community activities including the Jean Augustine Centre for Young Women’s Empowerment. She also supports several scholarships at various post-secondary institutions to help provide a better future for young women.

Three new champions were crowned at the 2020 Canadian Tire National Skating Championship finals that took place at the Paramount Fine Foods Centre in Mississauga on January 18th. 20-year old Roman Sadovsky landed three quadruple jumps to capture the first national skating title of his career, beating out veteran Nam Nguyen for gold. Ice Dance partners Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier had stood on the national figure skating podium seven times, but never on the top step. But Saturday, after nearly a decade of skating in the shadow of superstars Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, they captured gold.
“Getting a Canadian title is something we’ve really worked hard to get.
It hasn’t come easily. But everything is about timing in life and we’ve finally found what works for us.” - Piper Gilles
Emily Bausback won a women’s singles event that saw three newcomers climb the podium, while Kirsten Moore-Towers and Michael Marinaro won their second consecutive pairs title.
