CULTURAL DIVERSITY Festival By Leslie Styles

The Cultural Diversity Festival was held on the September 28th weekend in BPAC’s lobby celebrating ethnic distinctions in people, music, arts and culture. There were informative displays highlighting Latin American, Russian and Arabian cultures. Guests were able to view a variety of items including books, costumes, dolls, and musical instruments from these various parts of the world. THE

Purse Project

FILL A PURSE WITH LOVE AND A WOMAN’S HEART WITH HOPE In October 2016, Sarah Boville and Mandi Neiser saw an opportunity to give back by helping women and children in their community. They were inspired by Angel Freedman who created an initiative called “Fill a Purse for a Sister.” Purses were filled with items a woman turning to a shelter or transitional housing would need and then delivered to those shelters in time for Christmas. Mandi & Sarah knew there was a need in the Niagara area, and within 24 hours, The Purse Project Facebook page, logo and tagline were created.

In 2018, Jill MacKellar and Gayla Matos joined with a few friends to provide hand-made and hand-written Cards of Blessing and encouragement to be put in each purse. This year, Jill and Gayla have decided to also collect purses for women in Waterdown and Halton through local organizations.

The Purse Project

Halton & Waterdown campaign will run for the month of November and then the donated purses will be delivered to organizations at the beginning of December.

How Can You Help? • Be a drop-off location for purses • Volunteer to help us by sorting and organizing donations and purses at our headquarters • Fill a new or gently used, goodsize purse with new personal care items (see list below for suggestions) - then drop off the purse to one of our drop-off locations (which will be announced on our Facebook page by the end of October). ■

Since 2016, over 5000 purses have been filled and delivered to women in need in the Niagara, Hamilton and Milton regions.

The Purse Project HALTON & WATERDOWN Please refer to the following GUIDELINES: • • • • • • • • •

Ridiculously Easy

Pumpkin SOUP with KALE + COCONUT TANGLE Directions STEP 1. Heat oil over medium heat in a medium size pot, add onion, sauté until softened and translucent, about 5 minutes. Add garlic, sauté for 30 seconds. STEP 2. Add the rest of the soup ingredients, bring to a simmer and cook for 5-10 minutes. STEP 3. Blend using an emersion blender or transfer to a blender and blend until smooth.

8

NeighbourhoodMagazine.ca

STEP 4. In the meantime, make the Kale Coconut Tangle (optional). Place the coconut in a frying pan over medium heat and toast until golden, about 5 minutes, then transfer to a plate or bowl. Add the oil, heat. Add the kale and toss in oil. Continue tossing until the kale has wilted and begins to get a little crunchy, about 5-10 minutes. Add the coconut back into the frying pan with the kale, toss together and shut the heat off, set aside. STEP 5. Distribute the soup between 4 bowls, drizzle a tsp of coconut milk over each bowl and top with a pinch of Kale Coconut Tangle, if using.

This soup is so easy to make and if you don’t make the Kale Coconut Tangle, you will likely already have everything you need in the pantry. If you don’t have access to a blender, chop the onions really small and you won’t notice them in the finished product. Serves 4 Ingredients • 2 tbsp Olive Oil • 1 Onion, diced • 1 Clove Garlic, minced • 3 cups of Pureed Pumpkin, from a 796 ml can or DYI cooked pumpkin • 3 cups low/no Sodium Vegetable or Chicken Stock • 1 cup Canned Light Coconut Milk (reserve some of the remaining milk for a drizzle on each bowl) • 2 tbsp Pure Maple Syrup • 1/2 tsp Sea Salt • 1/4 tsp Black Pepper • 1/4 tsp Cinnamon • 1/4 tsp Chili Powder, optional FOR THE KALE COCONUT TANGLE • 2 tbsp shredded Unsweetened Coconut • 1 tbsp Grapeseed Oil • 1 cup shredded Kale • 2 tbsp Canned Light Coconut Milk to drizzle on the bowls of soup

10th Annual

HOPE IN HIGH HEELS By Leslie Styles

It was a lesson in humility at the 10th Annual ‘Hope in High Heels’ walk at Emma’s Back Porch on September 21st in support of Halton Women’s Place, which provides a safe haven, information and education to support a future without abuse for women and their children. Boys and men strapped on pink heels for a short walk to demonstrate a BIG statement – WE ARE PART OF THE SOLUTION. Despite their sore feet, the boys persevered and gingerly walked around in their high heels for the cause. If you are considering participating next year, all pink high heels are provided and all walkers get a free lunch and lots of laughs while supporting this important cause.

Book Signing By Leslie Styles

Drew and Jonathan, the charismatic and popular stars of the hit HGTV show, ‘Property Brothers’ drew a huge crowd to their recent book signing of their children’s story, ‘Builder Brothers: Better Together’ at a local Indigo where they read from their new book, posed for photos and signed autographs.

White-breasted Nuthatch

‘Builder Brothers: Better Together’, is the heart warming story of Jonathon and Drew as they compete in their town’s soap box derby. The book is the second in the Builder Brothers series. “Like our first book, ‘Builder Brothers: Big Plans’, this book draws from our experiences growing up in Canada,” Drew said. “There was always a bit (or a lot!) of brotherly competition between us, which pushed us to be better, just like the brothers in the book.” After thrilling fans in various Ontario cities, the brothers continued the book tour into the States.

Community Profile

WITH

STILL WATER FLOAT CENTRE Let’s be honest, we are all looking for ways to decrease stress in our lives. Diet, sleep and physical activity have been known to help but have you considered FLOATING?

Floatation therapy, also known as sensory deprivation therapy, has gained popularity over the last 10 years with overwhelming success in reducing stress, anxiety, depression and body pain. We sat down with StillWater Spa to discuss the benefits of floating and their passion for helping their clients achieve their health goals. It’s time to FLOAT.

12

NeighbourhoodMagazine.ca

How did your passion for Floatation Therapy come to be? I took my wife to a float centre in Toronto 3 years ago for her birthday. I would always take her to a spa of some kind and I was looking for something different. I didn’t really know anything about floating but it seemed like something that she would enjoy. She was also having some shoulder and back pain. After an hour in a float pod she was hooked. She looked like she was glowing when she came out. Her shoulder and neck pain were gone and she felt refreshed. We started doing some research on

Above: Owner Sonia Pagliuso sits by one of her pods

what floating was exactly. When we realized all the benefits floating had to offer we knew we had to bring this to our community. After 2 years of research and learning the ins and outs of the float industry we decided to pull the trigger and pick a location in Aldershot.

Why did you want to open StillWater Float Centre in the Aldershot community? We have called Aldershot home for the past 7 years. We have and still own and operate the Mr. Sub on Plains Rd. When we first came here we did know anyone in the area. The one thing I noticed right away is the warmth and kindness from the people in the community. I knew this was a place we wanted to stay. We continued to connect and get involved with the community and the people. And as fate would have it we found our ideal location 1 block away from our existing business in the Jazz condo building..

What is flotation therapy? Floatation therapy is the practice of spending an hour or more floating in a pod that contains 10 inches of constantly heated water mixed with a 1000 pounds of therapeutic grade Epsom salt. Self care is something many people neglect. Family and work always become the priority and people simply forget to take care of themselves. Floating gives you a chance to block out all external stimuli and just be. You are floating in a zero gravity environment, which helps to decompress your body thru the joints and spinal column. The density of the salt water puts you in an environment where approximately 80% of the gravity we usually feel is no longer affecting our body. We use a large portion of our energy counter acting the forces of gravity. When our bodies our relieved of this effort it is left with a surplus of energy that is then used on resting, recuperating and healing anything that needs attention.

What is the float process like? You have your own private room with a shower. You start by taking a warm shower to wash the day away. As you lay back in the pod your body is supported by a thousand pounds of Epsom salt. The salt and weightlessness brings relief to aching muscles and joints. With the outside world removed, your mind is free to explore your inner self, solve problems and discover hidden creativity. After 60 minutes, soft music begins to play through the water and as you stretch you notice...you feel amazing. A hot shower awaits you. Once you have showered we encourage you to relax in our lounge area with a complimentary cup of tea, coffee or a cold bottle of water.

What effects does floating have on the mind? The effects of floating on the mind are remarkable. The sensory deprivation slows your brain waves until they reach the theta state. This state is most common during deep meditation or just before falling asleep and is usually combined with vivid imagery, very clear, creative thoughts, sudden insights and inspirations or feelings of happiness. This is all thanks to the release of endorphins, the body’s natural opiates. Floating has also been proven to relieve stress, anxiety and depression as well as

increased sensory acuity, sleep schedule maintenance and manage PTSD.

What effects does floating have on the body? The effects of gravity on your bones, joints and muscles are completely removed while floating. This vastly improves your circulation and allows your body to rejuvenate and heal itself. Research shows that floating measurably reduces your blood pressure and heart rate while at the same time lowering stress levels. It calms your nervous system which provides deep relaxation as well as increased blood circulation, increased healing ability, muscle recovery, pain management, increased immune function and enhanced athletic training.

You were named the best spa in Burlington by the Reader’s Choice Awards 2019. How does it feel to achieve such an accomplishment after only being open for 5 months? We feel honored and fortunate to have been able to reach so many people in such a short period of time and it gives us the drive and motivation to continue working hard to educate as many people as we can to floating. ■
