JEANINE’S DREAM BY LESLIE STYLES
Jeanine McLean loved life in northern Ontario. It was the final year of her nursing program at Sudbury’s Cambrian College and as an RN she’d soon be able to give back to others the care she herself had received as a little girl. Challenged by a congenital heart defect, she survived numerous hospital stays starting with pacemaker surgery at the young age of two-anda-half. Reaching adulthood, Jeanine had a natural empathy for children who had heart disease. She worked hard to become a cardiac nurse to care for young patients like she had been cared for at Sick Kids Hospital. A beautiful, young lady with a huge smile and sparkling blue eyes, Jeanine had a great sense of humour and cheerful disposition. Apart from her nursing studies she enjoyed music, drawing and painting. All was going well until an unexpected tragedy struck. During Jeanine’s final year of nursing at Cambrian College, she slipped away peacefully in her sleep at age 24, caused by a rare reaction to her pacemaker. Jim McLean, Jeanine’s father, experienced the soul-crushing pain of losing a child. “It never goes away, but you learn to better cope with it.” To honor his daughter, Jim has aimed to raise money for the Cambrian College bursary in his daughter’s name, which originated by Jeanine’s fellow nursing students.
6
NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA
Jim, a Harley riding member of ‘Guardians of the Children Motorcycle Club’, an organization that protects abused and bullied children, was the host of the first ever motorcycle ride/poker run to support Jeanine’s bursary. It took place September 13th, starting and ending at Chuck’s Roadhouse at Upper Middle and Appleby. The route included Fergus and Orangeville and a small parkette in between. At each stop, participants picked up another playing card toward their poker hand. Returning to Chuck’s Roadhouse, the gang enjoyed a silent auction, prizes, a cheeseburger lunch and finishing the poker hand. Money raised went to help nursing students with medical-related issues whether physical, emotional, or mental. Jim feels by contributing to the bursary he has found a way to keep his precious daughter’s dream alive. Tax-deductible donations can still be made by contacting the Cambrian College Foundation at www.cambriancollege.ca/memorialride. The goal is to raise $15,000 so Jeanine’s bursary will become a permanent yearly endowment from Cambrian College. Although Jim can no longer be with his daughter physically, he knows that her spirit and her dream lives on in those who will care for little people, offering comfort at their hospital bedsides.

oldenrod is not everyone’s favourite plant, but it does provide a golden opportunity (pun intended) to photograph our two most important bees. The Bumblebee (right) is the superior pollinator, while the Western (European) honeybee (left) produces more honey. Optimal foraging occurs when temperatures are 22-25 degrees Celsius. These macro photos were taken by a Nikkor 105 mm lens with a Sigma 2X teleconverter, mounted on a Nikon D850 camera body.

A GREAT COOKING ACTIVITY FOR KIDS...
as there is no baking or heating necessary, it uses few ingredients, and each kid can customize their individual cup with as much or as little "dirt" as desired. Made with chocolate pudding, crushed Oreos, and gummy worms, these pudding dirt cups are as fun for the kids to make as they are tasty to eat. Try innovative presentations using ceramic plant pots, or check our variations for other fun ideas. 8

This year, the need for support and care is greater than ever and The Purse Project Network has big dreams to help meet those needs through their Fall Purse Collection Campaign. They plan to continue their efforts of collecting donated purses during November, all while following proper safety protocols and guidelines from the government.
How Can You Help?
Fill a purse with LOVE and a woman’s heart with HOPE ThePurseProject-CardsofBlessing
S
ince its inception in 2016, The Purse Project has been blessing women through the gift of a donated purse filled with essential personal care items. Over 6,000 purses have passed from donors to The Purse Project and then on to various organizations that serve women in need across Ontario. Organizations have included street missions, women’s emergency shelters, transitional housing services, sexual assault victims services and a women’s prison. Full-time caregivers, single moms, unwed pregnant teens, senior women, teenage girls, refugees and low-income women have also received purses. In January 2020, Gayla Matos & Jill MacKellar took over the directorship of this initiative. They renamed it The Purse Project Network, allowing for more flexibility in serving the community. During this past spring & summer of COVID, The Purse Project Network was able to reach out to those in need in unique ways: • They were able to connect Compassion Society and Elizabeth Fry Society with their contact at Proctor & Gamble, who generously donated personal care comfort kits to these two organizations. • They donated 15 filled purses to Home Suite Hope for the new women joining their program in September. • They ran a summer Gift Card collection campaign and collected $1,305 in gift cards, which were donated to four local charities. • Through the “Cards of Blessing” branch of The Purse Project Network, they were able to hand-craft and handwrite over 800 cards of encouragement that were given to several seniors homes and facilities in Halton and Waterdown as a way to encourage the residents who were secluded and away from family.
• If you own a public-based business - would you consider being a drop off location for purses for the month of November? Drop-off locations are especially needed in Burlington and Oakville. • Volunteer to help sort, organize & deliver donated purses. • Follow - and SHARE - the Facebook page to stay updated with information about the fall campaign. • Fill a new or gently used purse with NEW personal care items following the list (below), then drop it off to one of the drop-off locations (to be announced on the Facebook page).

IS TRICK-OR-TREATING CANCELLED?
HOW TO H AV E A C OV ID -FRIENDLY H AL LOWEEN With Halloween just around the corner and COVID-19 numbers rising, we’re not holding our breath for an executive order from Ontario that we will be celebrating Halloween in the style we’re all used to. Gone (or paused) are the days of large groups of children running house-to-house in exchange for candies from the hands of strangers (all while eating their treats en-route with unsanitized hands). However, the current pandemic doesn’t mean we have to sit out on Halloween this year; it simply means we have to get creative! And with parents and caregivers having pandemic brain (or is it just us??!!), we thought we’d help you out with some alternative ideas to trick-or-treating. Here are some spooktacular ideas on how to safely celebrate Halloween during the year of COVID-19 which is very fitting because it has already proven to be the MOST terrifying year yet!
Spooky Hand Sanitizer Is there anything more coveted in 2020 than hand sanitizer? With this little germ-killing juice found in bags, cars, entranceways and everywhere
10
NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA
in between, we thought that making some of your own would be both fun and practical. With some simple household items and a quick run to the pharmacy, you can brew up your own batch. If you’re not feeling up to brewing your own concoction of hand sanitizer, you can always take a pre-made batch and make it more “Halloweeny” with a few tricks. Dye, glitter and Halloween-shaped cutouts can help kids decorate their magic cleaning potion. Better yet, all public health agencies agree that proper hand washing is the gold standard to combat all germs, including COVID-19. Encourage your little ones to wash their hands by making it fun! Take yummy smelly hand soap, add in a few Halloween props (toy eyeballs, tiny skeletons, or creepy spiders) and those black lights won’t find anything on your family’s hands!
Halloween Decorations There are probably more tubs of Halloween décor in most peoples’ houses than Christmas. It’s something that so many of us just love to lean into (#guilty). This year, without going door-to-door and
keeping things closer to (inside) home, take your Halloween decorating to the next level. Most years, people only decorate the outside of their homes, but this year we encourage you to decorate everywhere and anywhere inside the house – from the kitchen and bathrooms to bedrooms and closets. You can get creative by making your own decorations or you can buy items, like these black and white party fans that can be used again and again. We just can’t get enough of décor that is ecofriendly and reusable!
Neighbourhood Window Scavenger Hunt Do you have a community that just LOVES Halloween for the social interactions? Why not have a socially distanced-approved window scavenger hunt? Have someone in your neighbourhood take the lead on assigning items for each house to display in their window on Halloween eve. Items such as pumpkins, bats, spiders, witches and so on can be creatively added to houses for kids to search and find. Make your own spooky checklists for the hunt,
For the artistically challenged, you can always print off a jack-o-lantern template where you’ll score high on technical ability but low in the artistic category (trust me, this is my MO!). You can even take the competition out to the community by inviting friends and neighbours to join in! Pumpkins can be displayed on front porches or park walkways for enjoyment, fresh air and voting. The winner gets all the pumpkin seeds!
dress-up in your best costumes and ensure a candy prize when your little ones find their final item. Not feeling up to wrangling kids out for a neighbourhood walk? Keep the scavenger hunt close to home by hiding candies around your house or yard! The Easter Bunny doesn’t have full rights to these hunts, and if anything, 2020 has shown us that we all have to be a bit flexible.
Piñatas Now you know that the first thing the kids are going to say when you tell them there is no (or limited trick-or-treating) is…”BUT WHAT ABOUT ALL THE CANDY!?!?!” Let them know that you can still fill their buckets with the help and fun of a piñata. Shop Caring Confetti piñatas for ones that are not only high quality but are beautifully designed. What we love even more is that once the party is over, these beauties can be added to a bedroom or playroom shelf.
Pumpkin Carving Contest (and pumpkin-seed roast-off!) Are you a traditional pumpkin carver who does big eyes and a missing tooth or a are you known as the gourd Picasso? Let the whole family show off their skills with a pumpkin-carving contest.
Movie Night Ghostbusters, Casper, Hocus Pocus and Beetlejuice are just a few of our annual must-watch Halloween movies. More time indoors means more time to watch and share these beloved films with our kids. Since Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, you can even curl up in costume or Halloween pyjamas during the afternoon and enjoy an age-appropriate movie! Pair it with popcorn mixed with pumpkin-shaped candies and Halloween treats. Invite another family or friend(s) within your bubble to get into the spooky spirit together! #bettertogether
Do you have a Halloween tradition or notice something we might have missed? Let us know by e-mailing info@caringconfetti.ca. ■

B ACK TO SCHOOL BY JASON STACEY
It’s back to school season and it’s a season unlike any other. After a very lengthy lay off due to the pandemic, students were eager to get back to their classes to see their friends and teachers and to bring back a bit of normalcy during these unprecedented times. This year, students and staff are focused on health and safety by wearing face masks, washing hands and physical distancing to help minimize the risk of direct infection and transmission of COVID19. We wish all the kids and staff a safe school year.

a n i l u p Ca GIVE A LOVING ANIMAL A NEW LEASE ON LIFE. Capulina – or Lina for short – was rescued in Mexico when her previous family tried to euthanize her over an illness. She has now made her way to Canada and is ready for her forever home. Lina survived distemper as a puppy which left her with a mild facial tick. Other than that, she has fully recovered and there will be no long-term effects. Lina’s foster describes her as sweet, loving, shy, curious and adventurous. She has been making a lot of progress in her foster home thanks to patience, consistency and lots of positivity. Lina needs time to warm up to new people and will retreat to her crate (her safe space) when she feels uncomfortable. Lina loves walks and the company of other dogs. She would do best with at least one other dog in the home. Lina is a flight risk and should not be off leash at this time. Lina will need: • Patient humans to help boost her confidence • A low traffic home outside of the city • A home without young children
