lue Jays are both colourful and boisterous. While a typical bird photograph will try to capture the eye in sharp focus, an up close photo of the Blue Jay’s vaned feathers, displayed spread out, shows nature’s intricate beauty. Bird feathers take about a year to regrow if they are lost. These photos were taken with a Nikon 80-400mm zoom telephoto lens on a Nikon D850 body at a distance of 5 meters.

NATIONAL DAY FOR TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION Article and Photography by The Office of Burlington Mayor Marianne Meed Ward

On September 30, Burlington observed the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The day honoured the lost children and Survivors of residential schools, their families and communities.

6

The event at Spencer Smith Park included powwow dancers, a memorial walk and speeches on the effects of residential schools. The large crowd wore orange shirts which have become a symbol to honour the children who survived residential schools and remember those who did not.

"I'm just very grateful that my mother is here today, and she was a victim of the Mohawk residential school," said White Eagle. "Today, this is about recognition and being thankful for the survivors, because without the survivors, we wouldn't be here today. She chose to survive and she made it through."

Indigenous spiritual healer White Eagle said a prayer at the gathering and brought her mother to the stage.

Burlington Mayor Marianne Meed Ward also attended the event.

NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA

"Today is really meant to be about listening and learning and working towards healing. To understand what really happened in our country, the truth of what really happened and the issues that still face indigenous people coast-to-coast, and right here in the City of Burlington," said Meed Ward. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.

INGREDIENTS • 1 tbsp olive oil • 1 onion, diced • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 1 tsp cumin • 2 tsp garam masala • 1/2 tsp salt • 1/4 tsp cayenne • 1 head of cauliflower, halved and cut into florets • 1 796ml can of diced tomatoes, with juices • 1/2 cup water • 1/4 cup peanut butter • 1 small can of chick peas, drained and rinsed • Juice of 1/2 lemon

GARNISH • 1/2 cup unsweetened Greek yogurt • cilantro

Prep Time: 30 minutes ı Serves: 4

DIRECTIONS STEP 1 / In a deep skillet, heat oil to medium. Add the onions and sauté until translucent, about 4-5 minutes. STEP 2 / Add the spices, garlic, and lemon juice and stir until fragrant.

STEP 3 / Add the cauliflower, and stir a few minutes until the cauliflower is coated with the mixture, then add the can of tomatoes, and the water.

STEP 4 / Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to a medium simmer. Reduce until the sauce thickens and the cauliflower is just tender, roughly 15 minutes. STEP 5 / Add the chick peas and cook until warmed through, about 3-4 minutes. STEP 6 / Serve over basmati rice with some warmed naan. Sprinkle some chopped cilantro and add dollops of yogurt to each serving.

A SPECIAL EXHIBITION at the Joseph Brant Museum

CIPHER DECIPHER

Cipher | Decipher is an interactive exhibition developed by Ingenium – Canada’s Museums of Science and Innovation, in partnership with the Communications Security Establishment (CSE). Providing visitors with a rare and exciting opportunity to view an authentic Second World War Enigma cipher machine, Cipher|Decipher breaks down communications encryption: what it is, how it works, and how it affects our lives. The 500-square-foot exhibition showcases a wide range of historic communications encryption artifacts on loan from the CSE, and contains both

hands-on and digital experiences, as well as custom illustrations that visually demonstrate key processes in cybersecurity, and making and breaking ciphers. Visitors will be able to scramble their own messages using a cipher wheel, see how an Enigma cipher machine works, and tackle puzzles to learn if they have what it takes to work in the field of cryptology.

Also on view is a complementary miniexhibition, Floriography: The Language of Flowers. Beyond their beauty, flowers can share deep and symbolic meaning. Sending flowers to a special someone can allow us to confide our true feelings or let a loved one know that we’re thinking of them This meaning is taken a step further through what’s known as “floriography”, the Victorian era art of combining flowers to send coded messages - a language based entirely on flowers. Using images taken from the Museums of Burlington’s collections and floriographies on loan from the Royal Botanical Gardens, visitors will uncover the subtle art of floriography and can even try their luck at decoding a bouquet mural for the chance to win a prize.

THE EXHIBITION RUNS FROM OCT 15, 2021 TO JAN 8, 2022

Museum hours of operation are Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00am to 3:30pm. In accordance with COVID-19 protocols, the Museums of Burlington has procedures in place to allow the public to safely enjoy the galleries and exhibitions currently on view. Visitors to the Museum are asked to pre-pay admission online for a designated entry time. Entry times are available on the 1/2 hour. Walk-in visitors will be accommodated space permitting.

LOCATION: Joseph Brant Museum TARGET AUDIENCE: All ages, families FEE: Included with regular museum admission CONTACT FOR TICKETS/RESERVATION: museumsofburlington.ca NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA

he Red Admiral butterfly (Vanessa atalanta) is found in temperate regions world-wide. Only males with a territory are able to attract females for mating. The Red Admiral can be an unusually calm butterfly, as this one was at the Riverwood Conservancy while posing on a purple coneflower, thus allowing for photography at a close distance.
