CANADIAN National Championships By Leslie Styles / Photography by Evan Bingley
Amid much pageantry, Burlington Lawn Bowling Association hosted the Canadian National Championships at the beautiful New Street Club. The five day tournament began with a short parade led by a piper and colour guard, followed by the various provincial teams. During the opening ceremony, a warm welcome was extended to all out-of-town visitors by MP Karina Gould as well as Tiffany, a rep of MPP Jane McKenna. President Doug Busey and V.P. Tony Farrell of the Burlington club spoke, recognizing the contribution of the volunteers. Everyone joined in to sing “O Canada”. Mens and ladies teams from seven provinces participated in the bowls, stopping for lunch and breaks between games. The very hospitable Burlington hosts supplied several meals to all present, including a bbq

Butter Tart
FESTIVAL By Leslie Styles
Burlington satisfied its sweet tooth in August at the first annual Butter Tart Festival held at the Art Gallery of Burlington. Butter tart lovers came from miles around and were treated to every kind of butter tart imaginable, including peanut butter chocolate tarts, maple bacon butter tarts, and the classic pecan tarts to name a few. Vendors only added to the excitement, offering baked bread, jewellery, purses and even cannabis oil. The festival was a sweet success.

Ingredients SALAD INGREDIENTS • 2 cups of frozen shelled edamame beans • 2 ears of corn, niblets removed (about 1.5-2 cups or 2 cups frozen corn) • 1 red, yellow, or orange pepper diced small • 2 carrots, shredded • 3 hearts of palm from a can (about 1/2 of a can); cut hearts into rounds • 2 green onions, cut in small rounds
Edamame SUCCOTASH An oldie but a goodie! Don’t you love those recipes that you keep coming back to? I’ve been teaching and making this salad for years because it is the perfect accompaniment to almost any meal or gathering. This salad is incredibly delicious and super versatile. It goes with almost any meal. It is a great salad to bring to a pot luck lunch or dinner, you will be the party favourite for sure! It also keeps very well for 3 days, dressed! Right now is the perfect time to make it. The tomatoes are in full bloom, shape and colour. Use all different colour peppers and of course fresh corn. It is a very easy salad to play with according to your tastes and what you have in your fridge or pantry. The dressing is phenomenal and can be used for leafy salads as well. 8

What inspired you to become a Real Estate Agent? I come from a family of builders and real estate investors, so it seemed like a natural career path. Throughout my university years, I was in sales and really enjoyed and excelled at it.
What separates you from your competition?
I pride myself on my extensive knowledge of the real estate market and the personal approach we take to every single transaction.
What is one piece of advice you’d give to someone who is thinking of selling their home? Definitely hire an expert who understands your market place and understands and respects your needs.
I’ve read many of your reviews and people couldn’t be more pleased with your services. What does that mean to you?
It means everything! I take great pride in what I do and much of my business comes from happy clients who have referred me. My clients are my clients for life, not just for that one transaction.
Real Estate Agent
You are a lifetime resident of the Burlington area. How has that helped you when selling homes?
MICHAEL BREJNIK
Growing up in Burlington is definitely an advantage because you’re selling what you know so well.
A true testament for any successful Realtor are the referrals they get from satisfied customers. Without them, there’s no way you’ll make it in Real Estate. Michael Brejnik understands this and has worked hard to run his business with a strong sense of integrity, professionalism and dedication to his clients and the real estate business at large.
When you see your clients so happy after a successful transaction, it makes you feel so good that you were included in such a big part of their life. It really is an honor.
A lifetime resident of the greater Burlington area, Michael has been a Sales Representative with Royal LePage Burloak Real Estate Services since 2002 and has won numerous awards of recognition for consistently being in the top percentile in Canada for sales and setting sales records within the company.
What is the key to being a successful realtor?
I feel honesty and integrity have been the foundation of my success. I treat my clients biggest investment as I do my own.
What is the most rewarding part about being a realtor?
You are an avid supporter of the continued economic and social development of the local community. Why is your community so important to you? I plan on living here the rest of my life. My family and friends are all here. I love this city and the people in it. They are my greatest supporters. NeighbourhoodMagazine.ca

Children’s Festival at
SPENCER SMITH PARK By Leslie Styles
With summer winding down, the Children’s Festival at Spencer Smith Park attracted families looking for a bit of entertainment for their kids before the start of school… and they weren’t disappointed. The main stage showcased several acts including a stunt ventriloquist show, mimes, magicians and jugglers. One of the big attractions was the meet and greet with Peppa, the loveable (and slightly bossy) little pig. There were also bouncers and slides, temporary tattoos, face painters, Chics on Sticks stilt walkers and much more. In addition to the main stage, Creative Edge Dance Studio put on quite a show as well as Burlington Trampoline and Tumbling. Food trucks could also be found dishing out delicacies to the delight of the crowds. Overall, the little people had a fantastic day.

MODEL RAILWAY By Leslie Styles
The Burlington Model Railway Club welcomed visitors to their open house on August 25th at their location on Hidden Valley Drive. Instead of charging admission, the club accepts donations from visitors. The club’s goals are to promote the hobby of model railroading, improve skills of club members and have fun building and running the trains. Skill levels vary from beginner to expert. The level of detail on the trains, miniature people and accessories such as the tiny Kentucky Fried Chicken outlet are just fascinating to see. Watch for more viewing opportunities at the clubhouse located beside Hidden Valley Park. All visitors are welcome and donations appreciated.

Canada’s Largest
RIBFEST By Leslie Styles
Labour Day weekend saw the 24th anniversary of Canada’s largest Ribfest, proudly organized by the Rotary Club of Burlington Lakeshore. Since the very first Ribfest in 1996, all proceeds collected have gone to charity. A lineup of great bands rocked the main stage at Spencer Smith park, including Stone Monkeys, Bare Blue Sea and many others. Award-winning rib chefs set up giant barbecues in the park; Fat Boys Ribs, Carolina Ribs, Memphis Blazin’ BBQ, Billy Bones, and so many more. There were inflatable slides and jumpers for the little people, Ferris wheel, and other amusement park rides near the pier. The park was hopping with people for the whole weekend, another great success for Rotary Burlington Lakeshore and all of the charities they support.

restricted and palpation of the muscles in the lumbar region intensifies symptoms. LP during pregnancy is very similar to lumbar pain experienced by women who are not pregnant and it appears as pain over and around the lumbar spine, above the sacrum, making the differentiation between PGP and LP easy.
What Can YOU Do To Help • Low-impact activities such as swimming, walking, or stationary cycling can help relieve pain.
Back Pain WHILE PREGNANT Pregnancy related low back is the most common complaint among pregnant women, which leads to a huge impact on their quality of life. Research has shown that 50% of pregnant women will suffer from some kind of low back pain at some point during their pregnancies. The average healthy weight gain is approximately 30 lbs, most of which is around the abdomen adding a significant frontal load. The added weight puts stress on the back, hips, knees and feet/ankles.
Did you know... that there are different types of pregnancy low back pain? The two most common types are pelvic girdle pain and pregnancy related low back pain.
Pelvic Girdle Pain Pelvic girdle pain is the most common type of low back pain is roughly four times as prevalent as lumbar pain. Typically, women tend to feel a deep, stabbing, recurrent or continuous pain that is between the sacroiliac joint and gluteal fold. It may even radiate to the back of the thigh, knee and calf but will not go into the foot. The pain can be triggered by prolonged sustained postures, and usually occurs within 30 minutes of common daily activities, such as walking, sitting, or standing.
Pregnancy Related Low Back Pain Pregnancy-related low back pain is described as pain in the lumbar region (low back) that could potentially radiate into the leg. The pain is often described as dull and aggravated by forward flexion. In the lumbar region, spinal movement is often
• Place a pillow between your knees to take pressure off the low back when sleeping on your side. You can also place a pillow under your knees if you sleep on your back. • Take short breaks with your feet elevated • Wear supportive shoes, use a lumbar support pillow in your chair and take frequent breaks and walk around for a few minutes each hour at work • Don’t be afraid to ask for help when lifting heavy objects
What Can WE Do To Help? Pregnant women should be educated on how they can maintain a proper posture while doing every day activities so that the back is not overloaded or misaligned. Chiropractic care is safe and an effective practice during pregnancy. At Pillars of Wellness our chiropractor can help reduce back and pelvic pain, relieve aching muscles and ensure a faster recovery. This can be done through; • JOINT MOBILIZATIONS • SOFT TISSUE THERAPY • PAIN- RELIEVING MODALITIES • ACUPUNCTURE • REHABILITATION
