Event
Stories of mythical beings have been with us for thousands of years. These legends, which were sometimes inspired by fossils or living animals, continue to inspire us today. Now open at Joseph Brant Museum and running until January 3, 2021, Giants, Dragons & Unicorns: The World of Mythic Creatures traces the natural and cultural roots of some of the world’s most enduring mythic creatures. Organized by the American Museum of Natural History in New York, Giants, Dragons & Unicorns: The World of Mythic Creatures features unique cultural objects to highlight the surprising similarities and differences in the ways people around the world envision and depict mythic creatures. 6

The World of Mythic Creatures ON V IE W AT T HE JO SEPH BR A N T MUSEUM By Museums of Burlington | museumsofburlington.ca
The exhibition includes models and cast fossils of prehistoric animals to investigate how they could have – through misidentification, speculation, fear, or imagination – inspired the development of several legendary creatures. For example, visitors will discover how narwhal tusks were believed to be magical remnants of unicorn horns, how dinosaur fossils may have been mistaken for the remains of griffins, and how tales of sea monsters may simply have been fisherman’s tales of real creatures such as the oarfish and giant squid. Exhibition highlights include a stunning vibrant sculpture of the African water spirit Mami Wata; a replica “Feejee mermaid,” of the type made famous by showman P. T. Barnum, created by sewing the head and torso of a monkey to the tail of a fish; a “life-size” model of a European unicorn; and a dramatic model of a kraken, whose tentacles appear to rise out of the floor as if surfacing from the sea.
Giants, Dragons & Unicorns: The World of Mythic Creatures also offers numerous interactive stations throughout the exhibition. Visitors are invited to participate in activities like rearranging scale models of mammoth bones to look like a giant human skeleton. In an engaging digital interactive, visitors can build their own dragon and watch as it comes alive in a virtual environment. The exhibition also includes several video interviews with experts in various fields discussing the significance of mythical creatures and their possible real-life counterparts. FIERY KICK

Don’t settle for everyday marinara when saucing your next pizza. Here, we’ve topped a gluten-free cauliflower crust with a fiery curry sauce and tandoorispiced chicken for an Indian-inspired pie.
Chicken
Tikka Masala Pizza
Prep Time: 10 mins ı Cook Time: 30 mins ı Serves: 6
Ingredients • 1 pkg (300 g) PC cauliflower pizza crust • 2 boneless skinless chicken thighs • 1 tsp (5 mL) tandoori spice blend • 2 tsp (10 mL) olive oil • 1 cup (250 mL) lightly packed baby spinach • 1/3 cup (83 mL) tikka masala cooking sauce • 1/4 cup (60 mL) thinly sliced red onion • 1 cup (250 mL) shredded mozzarella cheese
Directions STEP 1. Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C). Place crust, bottom (flat) side up, on wire rack set over baking sheet. Bake, flipping crust halfway through, until edges are golden, 20 to 24 minutes.
Chef's Tip Baking the crust on a rack allows for maximum air circulation while also supporting the weight of the toppings – and avoiding any messy spills in the oven.
STEP 2. Meanwhile, sprinkle chicken with tandoori spice. Heat oil in non-stick skillet over medium heat. Cook chicken, turning once, until golden and no longer pink inside; about 8 minutes. Transfer to cutting board; let cool enough to handle. Thinly slice into bite-size pieces. STEP 3. Wipe skillet clean; heat over medium heat. Cook spinach, stirring, until wilted and liquid has evaporated; about 2 minutes. Remove from heat. STEP 4. Spread sauce onto crust, leaving 1/2 inch (1 cm) edge uncovered. Arrange chicken, spinach, onion and cheese over top in even layers. Bake until bubbling and browned; 7 to 8 minutes. Let stand 2 minutes.

Burlington resident Jordan Cumberland has spent much of her life with a camera in hand. She comes
by her talent and love for photography honestly. Her dad, a camera buff himself, inspired his daughter’s hobby and taught her a love of nature when she was little. Jordan’s interest in combining her love of nature and photography was further sparked when she took a photography course in college and her professor pointed out her eye for natural beauty and attention to detail. ►

Jordan’s appreciation of the Halton area is apparent in her photos as she presents a unique take on much-loved areas including Spencer Smith Park, La Salle Park and Kerncliff Park as well as Paletta Mansion, Burlington Beach and Royal Botanical Gardens. Recently, Tourism Burlington featured her ‘Burlington Pier’ snapshot on their social media sites.
Jordan has a deep passion to bring harmony into the world by sharing her artistic expressions and drawing you into her photos. As her confidence continues to grow, Jordan plans on taking the next steps towards professional photography.

GIVE A LOVING ANIMAL A NEW LEASE ON LIFE. Daisy is a sweet wise soul, who needs a specific family to expose her true potential. She is currently in training with her devoted foster and will need to continue in her forever home. She is loyal, loving and sensitive. Being moved around a lot in her life has caused some insecurities. To set her up for success, Fetch & Releash will be donating her adoption fee to her ongoing training and rehabilitation.
SEX: FEMALE BREED: LABRADOR RETREIVER MIX AGE: 5 YEARS OLD If you are interested in adopting Daisy, visit fetchandreleash.ca/adopt to fill out an adoption application and for more information, email adopt@ fetchandreleash.ca.
Daisy is described by her foster as independent, highly intelligent, sweet, stubborn, and playful. If it were up to Daisy, she would hike on trails exploring and playing fetch all day, every day! Daisy is apprehensive of new people and would benefit from muzzle training under the guidance of a calm, focused leader. Daisy’s ideal family would be patient, have dog experience, and a good understanding of dog body language and behaviour. Daisy must be the only animal in the home and is looking to settle in the country or suburbs. She is looking for an adult only home as well.
