Today, they are experiencing the extraordinary changes with the COVID-19 pandemic. They speak to each other daily by phone, even though they live only two townhouses away from each other. They take turns cooking for each other and leave the prepared food and magazines at the front door. They are currently social distancing from each other, waving and blowing kisses through the glass window. We thank these two beautiful ladies for their role in stopping the spread of this virus.

he last few weeks have brought many sudden, stressful changes to our lives. As human beings adapting to these changes, we may be feeling confusion, sadness and uncertainty, which in turn affects our pets. Dogs, like people, are creatures of habit and following a daily routine gives them structure and confidence. If you are mainly at home during this pandemic, try to keep your dog’s schedule intact as much as you can. The schedule of activities such as walks, crate time,

meals, play and naptime should remain as consistent as possible while developing new rituals and routines. Consistency will help your dog adapt to changes such as you (and the rest of your family) being home during the day and will also ease the transition later on when things are more stable and you go back to work/school. So, as we navigate through these challenging times, be mindful of your pets and their own routines to ensure their mental and physical health. www.doggieinthewindow.ca

HOW TO SUPPORT
SM ALL B USINESSES IN THESE UNCERTAIN TIMES Thousands of businesses across Canada are feeling the financial strain of the coronavirus after closing their doors to uphold social distancing practices. For small business owners suddenly deprived of customers, any support from the local community can spell the difference between surviving the pandemic and closing their doors forever.
8
NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA
Here are some ways you can help support small businesses during this trying time. Buy Online While some local restaurants have opted to close their doors to weather the outbreak, many restaurants are offering delivery and pickup, but check for delivery options at places other than restaurants. Your local hardware store, flower shop, bookstore or clothing boutique may not have their usual storefront, but many are providing delivery or curbside pickup.
Buy Gift Cards Purchasing a gift card to your favourite shop, theatre or restaurant is an immediate way to put cash into a business. Gift cards can go toward helping cash flow in these uncertain times.
See if Local Studios are offering Video Classes Quarantine life can get dull. Check out local exercise studios to see if they are offering livestream classes. You can also hire a financial planner, therapist, tax accountant, personal trainer, or music teacher right now ― they’re all providing services online.
Leave Good Reviews A word of support can also go a long way for stressed-out business owners. Go online to post positive reviews. Reach out by social media, e-mail, phone call, or whatever mechanism you have to tell them that you support them and when all of this is over, you’ll be there at their door.
Now might be a good time for Home Projects or Repairs If you’ve been meaning to put up a fence, do a bit of landscaping, replace some windows or tackle any other project that doesn’t take more than a few people to complete, find a local handyman or service to help. On-site auto mechanics are also available if you need them.
Tip Extra Generously, if you can Delivery workers are especially vulnerable to contracting coronavirus, given the nature of their work. If you can afford to tip 40% or even more, delivery workers would appreciate it. And if you’re worried about coming face to face with the delivery worker, ask them to put the bag on your front doorstep instead.
Share Your Knowledge via Social Media If you learn of a unique promotion or idea from a local business, share it online. Businesses are providing decorating and baking kits for kids and their parents, with curb side pickup. Because local businesses usually don’t have huge marketing efforts, their customers can help spread the word through social media.
Be Creative With much more free time than usual, use that time to be creative. Start an online contest / drawing for local business gift cards and services and promote it online and on social media. Each week, draw a winner and share the results. Just how long these small businesses will have to scale back operations is unclear, but ultimately, it’s going to be up to us, the local communities, and customers, to support them. Please do your part and stay safe.

The Mortgage Nest THEMORTAGENEST.CA
What are some trends right now in your industry that our readers should know about? Trends change so often! Today, we are facing a global health challenge and it is the major focus of every government body and community. This is directly impacting so many Canadians with their jobs, their salary, their homes, their businesses and their children’s education.

Financial support is becoming more and more important. As a result, we have seen rate changes on a consistent basis, the increasing need for additional funds, and the opportunity to leverage current market values. For our readers - knowing your mortgage options is key if you’ve been impacted financially. As every institution is different in terms of their rules, reach out to them to find out your options. Learn how the mortgage payment deferrals work and see if that’s the right solution for you. There are interest implications to completing these transactions so education is key! Mortgage Refinancing is one of the other trends I am seeing. Given the rate drops we’ve been experiencing, homeowners are looking at early renewals if it works in their best interest to lock in lower rates. I’ve spoken to many clients about whether or not this makes sense and since we are all different, it’s a conversation we can have together.
Why did you choose to become a Mortgage Agent? I’ve had many careers since I began working after graduating post secondary school. For almost 17 years, I worked for a major Financial Institution. In my tenure there, I focused on helping clients and staff through areas such as personal banking, credit cards, mortgages, loans, business banking and more. This allowed me to gain an overall picture of our financial health system that we are all trying to attain through various products and institutions. What was missing for me was my ability to provide alternative options for clients that didn’t fit one specific mold. For me, becoming a Mortgage Agent and helping people simply with closing their mortgage was never the goal, home ownership and financial freedom were. In my role as a Mortgage Agent, I felt that this was a great way to be able to really dig deep into my client’s goals and more importantly, match them up with the Institution that was the best fit for them and where they were going on their financial path.
What are the benefits to working with The Mortgage Nest? What separates you from your competition? I always say that nothing replaces experience - ever! I’ve been a young investor, new home owner, corporate paid employee, self employed, single income, and lastly, married and supporting a family. How things change through our stages of life! We work on the principle that mortgage financing is not a “one size fits all” solution. Getting to know our clients, their current financial picture, and future plans and goals is our biggest priority before even discussing Mortgages. We have teamed up with some of the best partners in the industry that will help place your mortgage financing as an overall part of your financial freedom plan - from Realtors, Investment Specialists, Insurance providers and Financial Planners. What services do you provide? What types of Mortgages do you offer? Mortgage Financing can be used for so many different options. We often think of mortgages as something we get simply to purchase a home. While that might be true, how we continue to use our mortgage financing has so many different options. Here are some examples on service we provide:
1) New Home Purchases Of course! If you are a first time home buyer, or looking at developing a plan to be a first time home buyer, we are here to help. We take a look at your current financial situation, and how it will prepare you to be able to buy that home you’ve always wanted. Whether you are new to the credit world, or someone who’s been there a time or two, we will work with your current situation. 2) Refinancing You might be a current homeowner in a mortgage today, but have found that ‘next’ home you are looking at. If you need to increase your mortgage we are here to help you! 3) Debt Consolidation & Home Renovation Lending Mortgage Financing is one of the lowest lending rates on the market. Why not take advantage of that to consolidate your existing debt, or plan that indoor or outdoor home renovation you’ve always wanted? 4) Lending for Self Employed I was personally employed with both a large Corporation as well as being Self employed, and I can tell you first hand that your mortgage financing will be a very different experience having these two types of income. Most Self Employed individuals feel like mortgage financing is impossible for them - but it doesn’t have to be! Having a Mortgage Agent that understands how to let Lenders know your ability to repay is important. There are plenty of other ways to prove that you are good for the lending without a fixed salary if you run your own business. What questions do you like to ask your potential clients before working with them? This is such a big part of what we do. People often think about their new mortgage or mortgage renewal as something they need at that moment in time. The mortgage product you pick, as well as the Institution you pair up with for your financing, is very important. Questions such as: Is this your forever home? Are you planning on upsizing or downsizing your home in the next 3-5, or 10 years? Do you plan on growing your family? Are there kids that might be moving out? How soon do you want to be mortgage free? The questions are endless. It’s really about establishing a connection to our clients and really understanding what’s important. Studies show that people are looking to break or renew their mortgage in as little as every three years - not being in the right product, or asking the right questions can impact the experience when this time comes. What does the future hold for The Mortgage Nest? Would be so great to have a lens into the future. But, if we could control it, it would be to continue serving our clients for more than just your mortgage. We see our clients being debt free sooner, mortgage free sooner, early retirement, and an unprecedented ease of financial burden so they can continue to enjoy life.
