Over these past many weeks our lives have changed profoundly. Our number one priority is staying well and ensuring we don’t contribute to the spread of COVID-19. Staying home has come to mean staying safe and those who do venture out do so out of necessity, taking an abundance of precautions.

We continue to have deep appreciation for our frontline workers who are enabling us to get through this worldwide pandemic. Our medical professionals, paramedics, PSWs, firefighters, police and those who bravely risk their own health to keep us well have our full support. A new level of appreciation for grocery store, pharmacy, postal, delivery, volunteers and varied essential workers has given us the opportunity to say thank you more often. Many businesses in our communities have felt the economic impact of the pandemic. Buying local has never been so important. Phone and online orders are happily filled, contactless pick up and delivery get the goods to us.

Purchasing a gift card, ordering in for a meal or stopping by an open business to show your support are all valued gestures. These actions will help keep our local businesses afloat until regular business can resume. Whether you are social distancing from seniors, family members and friends, home schooling or working from home, collectively we draw strength from being in this together. Phone calls, texts, emails and zoom help us to feel connected. The creativity and humour being shared at this time helps to lift our spirits. The abundance of acts of generosity, caring and concern speak to our Canadian resiliency and strength. We see healthy days ahead.

DEAR PATIENTS, At Magnolia Dental, our main goal has always been to protect the health of our patients, our team and our community. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have been closed for elective treatment. We are eagerly awaiting to open our doors once we get the go ahead from the government. At that point, we will be taking the utmost precautions to ensure the safety of our patients and staff. In the meantime, it is more important than ever to practice good oral hygiene and prevent cavities. Remember to Brush and Floss TWICE A DAY! We wish you all Good Health. Be Safe. Dr. Sapandip Chandi

THE FR ONT STEPS P R OJE C T What started out as a simple idea to photograph neighbours from their front steps has quickly turned into a global movement that has brought people together virtually when physical distancing keeps us apart. BY JASON STACEY PHOTOGRAPHY BY FOTOREFLECTION.COM

The Front Steps Project (#thefrontstepsproject) was born in March by a group of women in Needham, Massachusetts, US as a fundraiser for their local community council. It was a way to give back to their community during these uncertain times and it’s by that spirit so many photographers around the world, including Canadian Moussa Faddoul of Fotoreflection, have decided to carry the torch in their own communities.

“I wanted to do something creative that involved families in our community,” exclaims Moussa. “When I discovered ‘The Front Steps Project’ I knew I had found the answer I was looking for.” According to Moussa, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Families have been happy to participate and extremely grateful. “Some just needed a reason to dress up, get the kids out of the house, and document this time in their lives for keepsake,” he remarks. “Others never had a family portrait together before and found the initiative to be timely.”

8

NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA

During his photo sessions, Moussa found many families to be enjoying the simple connections on the front steps, huddling together, making silly faces, or sharing hopeful messages of encouragement they wrote on boards. In exchange for the professional image, the families are asked to donate to a local charity. Moussa Faddoul grew up in Lebanon, a war-torn country where people spent weeks, sometimes months confined to their homes or in bomb shelters without electricity, easy access to food, clean water or the communication tools we have today. Despite the hardships of war, Moussa recalls a unifying spirit that helped get people through those dark times. “Almost everyone I know from those days shares a common expression, ‘We miss those days.’ People were closer and looked after one another. They were not afraid to dodge snipers bullets to bring a bag of flour or a cup of rice to a neighbour in need. That spirit of selflessness and other-centeredness gets people through anything. I see that spirit at work today.” ►

As we continue to work together to get through these challenging times, people are finding creative ways to help their neighbours and reach out to those in need. Thanks to people like Moussa Faddoul, we will get through not only this pandemic but also anything else that faces our communities.

“We’re stronger together,” says Moussa. “Be patient, support one another and trust that better days are coming.”

FOTOREFLECTION is a wedding and portrait studio serving the GTA. Photographer MOUSSA FADDOUL is passionate about visual storytelling, believing in family, love and everything that brings people together. His approach is relaxed, unobtrusive and candid. He and his team enjoy working with easy-going, fun, adventurous people who value quality.

"In only three weeks, GroceryHero has built a national community and has made more than 1,000 matches between medical workers and volunteers across the country," says Matthew Lombardi of GroceryHero. “Canada’s front-line medical workers are the true heroes during this pandemic,” says Mohamad Fakih, Founder and owner of Paramount Fine Foods. “I am proud to support GroceryHero in its efforts to engage volunteers for this great service across the country and I hope this small act will make a big difference in the lives of our medical workers.”

SUPPORTING Front-line Medical Workers One Delivery at a Time GroceryHero and Mohamad Fakih partner to provide grocery delivery services to front-line workers across the country. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect Canadians from coast-to-coast, front-line medical workers are tackling this dangerous disease head-on as they selflessly put themselves in the line of danger to care for the sick.

After a long shift, the last thing medical workers want to do is visit the grocery store and risk exposing shoppers to potential danger. That is why GreoceryHero was created. GroceryHero is a free grocery delivery service for front-line medical workers that is completely volunteer driven. Volunteers can sign up on getgroceryhero.com and then are matched with a medical professional in their neighbourhood (by postal code) to help with the delivery.

Once a match is made, GroceryHero connects the medical worker and volunteer through email to discuss shopping needs, drop off and payment – the delivery is free, but volunteers will be reimbursed for the price of groceries. “As the pandemic continues and the demand for GroceryHero continues to grow, Mr. Fakih’s timely donation and experience running successful companies will help ensure we can strengthen our presence in parts of the country where we see the most demand,” says Lombardi. To learn more about GroceryHero, please visit getgroceryhero.com.

About GroceryHero GroceryHero is a free delivery matching platform to help Canada’s front-line medical workers focus on fighting COVID-19. Volunteers across Canada are matched with a medical worker in their neighbourhood by postal code, solving for the problem of oversubscribed delivery services, and medical workers not wanting to go inside grocery stores and risk exposure. Nuvo Network, Fortino’s and Avondale Equipment With Nuvo Network‘s Taste Kitchen and local Fortino’s stores supporting Food for Life in launching the Good Soup Project, thousands of litres of soup are being made with fresh, rescued food will be delivered to friends in need. For about $1.33 per meal, the Good soup is made with wholesome ingredients like turkey, fresh potatoes, carrots and herbs. Avondale Equipment of nearby Hamilton recently donated a new freezer to support this initiative. So many great businesses working together!

The Yarn Bomb Tree for Frontline Workers Captured in all its glory by local photographer Stacey Newman, this gorgeous work of art was created by Burlington resident Miranda Goode, who is also a registered psychotherapist and master knitter. A truly beautiful way to honour the people working hard for our health and safety, and bring some colour and creativity to her neighbourhood!

A MESSAGE FROM MAYOR MARIANNE MEED WARD As a result of the situation our city faces with COVID-19, many local organizations and businesses

have inspired us by taking action to support our community in new and creative ways. From retooling their manufacturing process to create personal protective equipment, to donating food or supplies to our local hospital, to finding new ways to connect with vulnerable residents and get them the essentials they need, our city has risen to this unique and unprecedented challenge. I have received emails and notifications from many residents, letting me know of the good work that is being done throughout this crisis. I want to take a moment to recognize them here and thank them for inspiring us all with their generosity and innovation. I invite the community to continue to reach out and alert me of additional stories of inspiration via mayor@burlington.ca.

Take the emotion out of your investing • Your ‘gut reaction’ is not likely your best guide for making long-term financial decisions, a good plan is still a good plan, stay the course • You don’t need more stress in your life right now, you’ve got more important things to focus on like your health, your family and your community • Leave your quarterly statement in the envelope and don’t worry about the headlines, do a review after the quarantines and self-isolations are over • If you want to talk, call a licensed advisor for an objective discussion

There will be a recovery, there always is – markets are amazingly resilient

2 Simple Investment Secrets

for Surviving (and Thriving) Through Crises

This COVID-19 pandemic and the associated emotional and financial impact has been unprecedented. We are all (individuals, businesses, governments) reacting and adapting on a seemingly day-to-day basis. At Brown Financial Security we have been talking with clients and community members like you about what is happening with their financial plans.

14

NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA

Here are the 2 Simple Secrets (themes) that I have taken away from the very recent flood of opinions and analysis on investing during COVID-19:

• Believe me, no one knows what will happen in the investment markets on a short-term basis (e.g. days, months), but history gives overwhelming evidence that well-managed portfolios deliver outstanding results over the long-term – particularly after crisisrelated downturns • Market corrections are a natural part of the investment cycle, they ‘let the air out’ of investment bubbles and create opportunities • This is not the right time to sell, no one’s investment plan should include “Sell Low”, some of the all-time best days on major equity markets follow very closely to the all-time worst days ‘Time in the market’ is more important than ‘Timing the market’.
