Waterdown’s final Farmers Market of the season took place Thanksgiving weekend at the legion. Locals ventured out to grab harvest veggies, perogies, pies and other decadent treats to include in their holiday feast. Wayne, from Bartley’s Flowers, was selling bouquets of fresh blossoms grown in town, with a recipe to make them last longer. “Mix a quart of tap water with a teaspoon of sugar, a teaspoon of bleach and 2 teaspoons lemon juice,” offerred Wayne. “It makes all the difference“. Pie in the Sky, Udderway Cheese Company, Stuffed and Vandenbroek Farms were just some of the vendors for the outdoor marketplace. Roze, of Olearia, provided live guitar and vocals. Waterdown will look forward to this weekly gathering when it returns for a new season next May.

Burlington unveils
NEW KEY TO THE CITY By Burlington Mayor Marianne Meed Ward
In January 2019, I announced the launch of a new Key to the City program for the City of Burlington to honour individuals and organizations who have made significant contributions to the community. The recipient of the inaugural Key was announced to be, posthumously, Mike Taylor of Walk off the Earth (WOTE) for the impact he made on Burlington’s arts and culture scene with his talent, music and community involvement. Mike passed away in December 2018. It was a devastating loss for his family, bandmates, fans and our city. Thousands of people from far and wide attended the tribute concert outside of city hall in his honour this past January to pay their respects and celebrate his talents. Mike and WOTE helped put Burlington on the map and he will be truly missed. Acting as a musical ambassador, Mike not only advanced Burlington’s local culture across the country with his band, but right here in our own community. Mike made Burlington his home and we are grateful to him for his contribution to music both locally and around the world. His legacy lives on in his bandmates, his fans, his friends, and his loving family.

I presented a second key to the Mayor Takeshi Sakamoto and the City of Itabashi, Japan in October 2019 during a trip by an Official Delegation from the City of Burlington. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the twinning agreement between Burlington and Itabashi. As part of the dual exchanges that occur in our twinning relationship, both of our cities send reciprocal official delegations to each other every five years as a way of fostering world peace and global understanding. We are thrilled that the key can now finally be unveiled. Designed and created by local stained-glass artist Teresa Seaton, the multi-coloured glass key incorporates elements of our natural landscape and city crest, all within the shape of our well-known blue city clock that stands proudly outside city hall as a gift from our twin city, Itabashi, Japan. The key is housed in a textured glass box that adds to the timeless beauty of this work of art. For more information, please visit the Key to the City webpage online at burlington.ca/keytothecity. This clean and healthy dessert is so delicious and one that you can feel great about eating. So good, that in fact, it would make perfect breakfast.
Apple Crisp
BAKED APPLES STEP 2. Hollow out the apples, but don't use an apple corer—it will slice all the way through the apple, which is not what we're after. You want to remove the core and seeds while keeping the bottom of the apple intact so you have a nice little vessel in the middle to fill with the crisp. STEP 3. Start by using a paring knife to carefully slice around the top core of the apple, making sure not to go all the way through to the bottom. Then pull out what you cut and use a spoon to scoop out the rest. Make sure that all seeds are out. I find that the sharp edges of a 1/2 tsp measuring spoon are ideal for scooping out the core but any small sharp spoon or even a melon baller will do.

• 8 Gala or Fuji Apples (they hold their shape best) • 1 cup Water FOR THE TOPPING • 1 cup/100 grams Rolled Oats (I like large flake or old fashioned) • 1/2 cup/45 grams Almond Flour • 1/4 cup/30 grams Chopped Pecans, Almonds or Walnuts • 1/4 cup Unsweetened Shredded Coconut
Directions STEP 1. Preheat oven to 375˚F.
Ingredients
STEP 4. Place the apples in a roasting dish that holds them snugly. STEP 5. Mix all the Topping ingredients together (by hand). Spoon the topping evenly into each apple to overflowing. Pour the water into the bottom of the pan. Cover pan with foil. STEP 6. Cover the roasting dish with foil and bake for 25 minutes, uncover and bake for another 25 minutes or until the apples are soft, shrunken and the crisp is browned. STEP 7. In the meantime, make the Tahini Drizzle by mixing all the ingredients together with a whisk. STEP 8. Serve warm with the Tahini Drizzle drizzled over the top.
• 2 tbsp Maple Syrup • 1 tsp Vanilla • 2 tbsp Softened Coconut Oil FOR THE SWEET TAHINI DRIZZLE • 2-3 tbsp Tahini • 1 tbsp Date Molasses (silan) • 2 tbsp Water • 1-2 tsp Lemon Juice

CLEAN EATING NOTES:
Oats have been used in herbal medicine, as a way to calm the nervous system. They are a great healthy comfort food – that has been shown to relax and calm anxiety. They are also a great source of fibre and plant based protein. Oats are naturally gluten free, and are a great way to get a boost of feel good B vitamins (the precursor to serotonin).
Waterdown’s
TREAT & PET WALK By Leslie Styles
On Saturday, October 27th, the streets of Waterdown were abuzz with Halloween fun for the third annual Treat & Pet Walk. 65+ businesses around town handed out treats to costumed kiddies and pets. There were photo corners around town to take pictures of the costumed animals and a grand prize was handed out for bestdressed pet. It was another fun filled day in Waterdown.

Financial
At Brown Financial we help our clients (and neighbours) understand and implement financial solutions using all the tools available to their best ability.
Here are a few thoughts and questions that we’d love to discuss with you about your Retirement Income Planning: 1. Is it better to contribute to an RRSP or TFSA? 2. Can I own more than one TFSA?
Tax-Free Retirement Income
Happy 10th Birthday to the TFSA! There’s been some increased interest recently in how the TaxFree Savings Account (TFSA) is being used by Canadians. Here are some stats: • The TFSA is 10 years old this year • 40% of Canadians own a TFSA • $63,500 is the cumulative contribution limit (since 2009) • $6,000 is the annual increase to the contribution limit • 42% of TFSA owners hold nothing but cash (earning 0%-2.5% interest) The TFSA has really grown up over the past 10 years and is set to become one of the most powerful tools in Canadians’ retirement income toolkits. It may be hard to fathom but some people have already grown their TFSA balance to

3. RRSP/RIF income is 100% taxable, TFSA income is 0% taxable. 4. RRSP/RIF income can cause claw-back of OAS benefits, TFSA income doesn’t. 5. Can I move my TFSA from my bank to Brown Financial? 6. What type of investments can I own in my TFSA? 7. I’m a small business owner, does a TFSA make sense for me? We love new clients from our hometown of Waterdown and are looking to add a few more families to our clientele before the end of the year. Our team will make it easy to make the switch to Brown Financial.
over $1,000,000! And for some more perspective, a 50-year today will have over $150,000 of TFSA contribution room by age 65. As this account continues to mature we need to be looking at our TFSAs as Tax-Free Retirement Income accounts (not as simple savings accounts). Unfortunately, the government and other big institutions haven’t helped much to educate people about the important investment aspects of the TFSA. This is not to say that you can’t use your TFSA to save conservatively for short-term financial needs, it’s just that the most powerful long-term results will come from owning investments that deliver better than cash account returns (and fit your investment risk profile). Ultimately, you want to invest your TFSA holdings and grow your balance such that when retirement comes you can generate as much tax-free income as possible.

Burlington’s
TREATS IN OUR STREETS By Leslie Styles
The streets of downtown Burlington were very busy as hundreds of families went from business to business to trick-or-treat in costumes and collect all kinds of goodies. There were many treating stops with activities, crafts, haunted houses and awesome photo opportunities. So many volunteers helped keep everyone safe on the streets and were also on the lookout for the best costume to win the grand prize! Everyone had a fabulous time and filled their bags with all sorts of treats.
