COTTAGE SUCCESSION PLANNING Family cottages hold tremendous financial and emotional value for families, but they can also be a huge source of family conflict. You know that there will come a time, because of your passing or a sale during your lifetime, that you will no longer be the owner of the cottage. You know the decisions you make will impact your family, and you don’t want to fail them. If you are like most family leaders, you want to secure the financial and emotional fortunes of your next generations. You want the resources you have accumulated to further the success of your family. You want your life to be recognized as a source of strength for your family.
@BROWNL AW YERS
The biggest obstacle to your family’s success is a lack of planning. Poor planning can manifest in many ways: inadequate tax planning, impractical expectations of sharing the joys and responsibilities among beneficiaries, and imbalanced accounting for the disparate financial situations of your beneficiaries. The greatest oversight, however, is the emotional costs and the damage to family relationships that poor planning can cause. A good plan is ongoing and evolves. Through knowledge gathering, deliberation, communication and maintenance, cottage succession and your life can be the source of strength and
inspiration for your family. It doesn’t have to be a prickly event that launches generations of discontent. The success of your family requires you plan for your cottage. Brown Lawyers has developed services for families to get informed, identify and communicate intentions, understand expectations and create tools that support family success, both emotionally and financially, through cottage succession.
CONTACT US TODAY to start your plan and take your first step to generational success!

FUN IN THE SUN AT
MEMORIAL PARK By LESLIE STYLES
Waterdown families flocked to Memorial Park to enjoy the much needed sunshine. Locals make good use of this well maintained, clean park throughout the year. It is home to baseball diamonds, a playground, splash pad, and a paved path for little people to learn rollerblading or cycling. There is a skatepark for skateboarding and in the winter, a zambonied ice skating loop. Timmy’s and McDonald’s are conveniently located across the street. Several events are held here throughout the year such as an Easter egg hunt, Ribfest and lots more. Check out our COMMUNITY EVENTS page for more details on upcoming events.

Spotlight • Q&A
Q: WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A DENTIST? At a young age I knew I wanted to work in the health care field. My 8-year-old self would have simply said “I want to help people.” In my teen years, I really enjoyed going to the dentist. I liked the aspect of educating patients about oral health care and managing patients when they were in pain. So, I decided I wanted to pursue a career in dentistry.
Q: YOU MARKET YOUR DENTAL CLINIC AS A “FAMILY-FOCUSED DENTAL CENTRE.” EXPLAIN WHAT THAT MEANS AND WHY THAT’S SO IMPORTANT TO YOU? At Magnolia Dental, we treat all of our patients like family and we also offer services for the entire family. We encourage parents to start bringing their little ones around their first birthday and start the child off on the right path to optimal oral health. We also like to share tips with parents on how to encourage toddlers to brush their teeth. Whether you are younger, older or somewhere in between, you will receive a personalized treatment plan for your specific dental needs.
with Dr. Sapandip Chandi from
MAGNOLIA DENTAL
There are a lot of dental offices out there, so how do you choose? Magnolia Dental, located in Waterdown, has become successful by making it a priority to provide a positive experience for all their patients, young and old, as if they were family. Their skilled staff are trained in the most up-to-date, advanced dental care techniques available, ensuring you are getting the best dental care in the industry. Combine that with a bright and inviting facility that allows their patients to relax and be comfortable, Magnolia Dental has everything to bring the shine back to your smile.

Q: YOU OFFER A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT SERVICES. WHAT CAN A PATIENT EXPECT WHEN WALKING THROUGH YOUR DOORS? At Magnolia Dental we have strived to create an inviting, comfortable and relaxing environment. We know that a visit to the dental office can cause some anxiety and nervousness, so at Magnolia Dental you will be greeted with a big smile and we hope our friendly nature helps in achieving a relaxing, stress free visit.
Q: WHAT SEPARATES YOU FROM YOUR COMPETITION? I am an honest, caring and genuine person. This is me. The same person at home and in the office. I am a wife, daughter, sister, friend and mother. All those roles have taught me so much about how to relate to people. Since I am a mother to 3 kids, I have an ease and comfort while treating children.
Q: WHAT ARE THE KEYS TO BEING A SUCCESSFUL DENTAL PRACTICE IN THE WATERDOWN COMMUNITY? I love Waterdown, it is a wonderful community. It definitely is a growing city, but I feel it has been able retain a smalltown feel. The key to being successful in Waterdown is to just be real, communicate honestly, value the patient’s time and focus on delivering the best possible dental treatment and care.
Q: I’VE READ MANY OF YOUR REVIEWS AND PEOPLE LOVE HOW WELCOME AND COMFORTABLE YOU MAKE PEOPLE FEEL. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN TO YOU? I thoroughly enjoy speaking to people and I love to learn about my patient’s life stories. It’s actually my favourite part of being a dentist, forming these relationships that can last for decades.
Q: WHERE DO YOU HOPE TO SEE MAGNOLIA DENTAL IN 5 YEARS? I have actually walked down the hallway of my office and envisioned the rooms full of staff and patients talking, laughing and discussing general topics and
dental health. Organic growth is the best and I hope my patients will help our office grow so we can help and treat even more amazing patients.
and learn to be more empathetic. We could all do so much better if we showed a little more compassion and empathy towards each other. ■
Q: IF GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO RELAY A MESSAGE TO THE WORLD, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY? Be humble, be nice and just love each other. Don’t judge, leave the ego behind

MEMORIAL PARK’S
SKATE PARK
Waterdown’s Skatepark, a part of Memorial Park, attracted lots of action in the sunny May weather. Groups of athletic folks gathered with their boards and protective gear; helmets, elbow pads and knee pads to challenge themselves and each other while they took turns skateboarding to a background of loud music. They made it look fun and easy.
Dwayne, Mark, Ed & Ryan getting ready to skareboard.
For those passionate about the sport, this skatepark is complete with a spine, elevator corner, over-vert corner, and roll-in. Obstacles added to the apron of the bowl include flatbar, curved ledges, and curbs. This skatepark was made for all skill levels. Waterdown Community has been strengthened by the building of this structure which encourages socializing, keeping in shape and a love for skateboarding.
EXPLORING NATURE AT THE RBG By LESLIE STYLES During May, visitors enjoyed strolling through the RBG, Canada’s largest botanical gardens. Colourful tulips were in full bloom and the new Rose Garden in Hendrie Park is home to a spectacular display of roses, as well as companion plants designed to keep disease and pests away. Some of the other options to visit in Hendrie Park include the scented garden, medicinal garden and prehistoric garden. There is an amazing, rare prehistoric tree (a Metasequoia) that is both deciduous and coniferous. This species, discovered in China, predates the dinosaurs and is a ‘must see’. 10

JIM CUDDY ROCKS THE ROYAL BOTANICAL GARDENS By LESLIE STYLES Just after the release of his Countrywide Soul album, Jim Cuddy of Blue Rodeo fame, teamed up with the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra in RBGs Hendrie Park for an unforgettable performance. It was a stupendous kickoff show for RBGs Garden Music series. The very talented maestro, Bradley Thachuk conducted the orchestra while Cuddy belted out the tunes. Opening the show, Kevin Fox, a revered recording artist was comically endearing when he admitted to a mistake during his performance nobody had even noticed. VIP ticket holders enjoyed dinner before the show, preferred parking and premium seating. Proceeds from the concert are used for the Growing Up Green fund.
