Kate Kyros claims U25 Nations Cup

Congratulations to Kate Kyros who took out first place in the FEI Nations Cup CDIO-U25 Grand Prix Freestyle at Global Dressage Festival VII in Wellington, Florida on the last weekend of February.

Riding Chemistry, Kate won the Freestyle which placed her on top of the podium following on beautifully from her second in the FEI Nations Cup CDIO-U25 Grand Prix.

Kate shared her thoughts on the experience of representing Australia in the sport she loves.

"From the 22nd to the 25th of February I attended the Nations Cup in Wellington Florida with the opportunity to compete in the FEI CDIO U25 Grand Prix with my horse Chemistry,” Kate said.

“This journey started in December 2023 by expressing our interest to Equestrian Australia who entered us in the competition.

“It was incredibly exciting finding out I had been accepted to compete in the Nations Cup as it was going to be my first time officially representing Australia. Receiving the official Australian Equestrian Team uniform was a surreal moment and I am very grateful to the Australian Dressage Selectors for considering my scores sufficient to represent Australia in the CDIO U25 Nations Cup in Florida.

“The CDI began on Wednesday with a horse inspection known

commonly here as ‘the jog’.

“Chemistry (Tommy) and I were the first to present in the CDIO U25 Grand Prix class dressed in our team uniform to be announced ‘for Australia’.

:Tommy was extra excited to trot up with extra press and atmosphere watching closely.

“Once we passed, my mother Heather Kyros, attended the Chef d’Equipe meeting where names were drawn by an international rider for the starting order.

“Whilst we awaited the draw, our team attended the official team media shoot where each nation arrived dressed in uniform with flags to pose for the cameras.

“It was super cool seeing the different nations all together and the patriotism shown by all the competitors.

“We also decorated our stable aisle and golf cart with Aussie flags, stickers koalas and kangaroos.

“Following this, all the teams attended the Nations Cup wel-

come party in the VIPLounge, a big dinner before the competition began.

“While the format for CDI U25 was much the same as past competitions, the class times had been moved to later in the day for lunchtime viewers in the VIP hospitality area.

“This was a far greater number of spectators than the previous three events we had attended.

“The Americans had a huge support team which also added greatly to the atmosphere surrounding the arena.

“I am so proud of Chemistry and our tests; he rose to the occasion like he had been doing this his whole life.

“In the CDIO U25 Grand Prix, we were narrowly second (by 0.4%), which meant we brought home the silver medal for Australia.

“The Nations Cup presentation felt very prestigious as we dismounted in the arena to be presented with our medals on the podium.

“After a victory jump with the

other competitors off the podium, we remounted for our lap of honour complete with celebratory music.

“On Sunday we competed in the freestyle class and rode a super test for 73.690% - it was the winning score by over 3% and the gold medal for Australia.

“Chemistry gave me an incredible feeling throughout the whole test, from our first salute I knew he was with me.

“We nailed all our changes completing a clean test to the final salute. I was ecstatic before the test had even finished, I was so proud of Chemistry and how well he listened and performed under pressure.

“There were certainly tears when my team found out I had won the Gold Medal.

“My groom Lillie Connelly and I entered the arena with such pride for the presentation, a huge thank you must go to Lillie for her expert support.

Riding in the Nations Cup is certainly a highlight from our time in Wellington, Florida.”

Australian eventers dominate at HOTY

It was a great three days in the office for Senior Eventers competing in the CCI4* at the Land Rover Horse of the Year in New Zealand recently.

Shane Rose and Virgil took out the Individual honors and the Australian Team, comprised of Andrew Barnett & Go Tosca (owned by Kate Burnheim), Oliver Barrett & Sandhills Special (owned by Prue Barrett), Kenya Wilson and Sandros Salute MW (owned by Lynette Winteringham, Ian Campbell and Kenya Wilson) and Sophia Hill and her own horse, Humble Glory dominated the 4* Oceania Championship.

After the showjumping, Australia finished on 161.3 penalty points for their best

three combinations, with New Zealand on 203.

In the Individual competition, the Aussies also filled the remaining spots on the podium

with Olivia Barton and Hollyander HG (owned by Robert Weight) second and Andrew Cooper and Sharvalley Thunder (owned by Andrew)

third.

The CCI3* saw the New Zealanders hold on to the Oceania with 124.7 penalty points to Australia's 130.2. Molly Lines and her own horse Tadpole finished on 38.2 and put her firmly on the podium in third place.

Leah is up for a challenge in Victoria

Northern Rivers equestrian Leah Van Ewijk is off on a 3000km journey as she aims to join Australia's Greatest Horse Women competition in Victoria this month.

Leah's love for horses and her years of experience as a horse trainer and competitor in Reined Cow Horse and Cutting events has fuelled her passion to compete against some of the best riders in Australia.

The journey to Tatura is expected to take around two weeks, during which Leah will face various challenges.

She must make sure her horses, Oakie and Colin, stay fit and healthy throughout the long journey.

Also, driving an older car and float adds an extra element of uncertainty.

Leah has had to do plenty of pre-planning, finding suitable showgrounds for her horses to rest and eat every couple of hours to avoid extended travel which could lead to travel sickness for the horses.

The competition for Australia's Greatest Horse Women will see Leah competing against 25 other talented riders, all of whom have showcased their skills in various horse events across Australia.

With her extensive experience with horses and show record,

Leah feels she has the necessary skills and is confident she has the experience to compete at this top level.

Her dedication and hard work have placed her among the high-

er level of women competitors in Australia.

Leah is currently seeking sponsors to support her journey to Tatura in Victoria.

Local Lismore vet Bruno Ros from North East Equine Veterinary Services is providing valuable assistance in preparing Leah's horses for the demanding journey.

The potential benefits for the local equine community are significant if Leah finishes in the top 10.

She plans to hold local horsemanship workshops, offering

education and guidance to horse owners and those interested in learning more about horses and the sport of Reined Cow Horse, plus horsemanship following the competition. She also aims to use the experience as a basis for sharing her knowledge with the equestrian community on the Northern Rivers.

Leah will be flying the flag for the Northern Rivers area, being the sole representative from the region competing in the fourround event comprising of Reining, Cutting, Obstacle chal-

lenge, and the final event being Reined Cow Horse.

Wet weather can cause problems for horses

Wet weather can cause a number of problems with horses, paddocks will stay wet for some time after heavy rains even when there has been a slow down in the rain and sunny days.

Many soils will retain high levels of water and this can present a serious risk for the horse’s health.

Even if horses are shod, they need to be protected from diseases and problems related to standing in mud.

There are a number of conditions that can result from consistent wet weather these include seedy toe, Greasy heel and mud fever.

Horses standing in water for a number of days will increase the risk of these conditions. It is very important to try to prevent these conditions from occurring.

It is highly recommended to bring your horse out of the paddock daily and clean the hooves and then apply a good quality dressing on the bottom of the feet and the hoof itself.

I find that effax is a very good hoof product, but if you are already using something similar that is fine, providing it offers some form of protection from the dampness, in other words a product that can repel the water.

Make sure you clean the hoof properly so that there is no dirt left and wipe clean with a towel.

In wet weather, it is essential that you clean down to the sole of the hoof. That way you can see if there is any damage. Asmall scrubbing brush would be useful, just remember if you don’t clean the hoof every day your horse will possibly end up with seedy toe.

If you locate white line, this can mean the start of an infection, but if you take about 2mm off and protect with a good water proof hoof dressing, you should reduce

the risk of seedy toe.

Seedy toe is the separation of the hoof tissue from the sole of the hoof which is called the white line or laminar.

If an infection did take hold this can reach to the coronet band and that will not be a great outcome, your horse could also become sore.

Horses that have white feet tend to be a little more susceptible to greasy heal, however any horse can develop greasy heal in wet weather.

The other problem can be swelling in the legs due to lack of exercise.

When there is lack of movement and muscle contraction, it can affect the venous and lymphtic system leading to a build-up of fluid in the venous system and a decrease in lymphatic drainage resulting in excess fluid in the subcutaneous tissues

of the leg.

These swellings are generally quite mild and do not appear to cause pain.

Keeping horses moving is the ideal situation, this means taking you horse out for regular walks or exercise under saddle. Light work should be sufficient to reduce the swelling, however there are some excellent natural products that can assist the venous and lymphatic system and reduce swelling.

The final and almost certainly the most important, is nutrition and avoiding digestive disorders.

Feeding a diet that contains plenty of roughage is ideal, no soaking of hays or hard feeds, horses have teeth for a reason and plenty of roughage is healthy for the digestive system.

However when horses are located in wet areas with poor pasture, there are a number of problems associated with this.

Horses grazing some tropical grasses for extended periods can suffer `Big Head' disease or Osteodystrophia fibrosa.

These grasses are buffel grass, green panic, setaria, kikuyu, guinea grass, para grass, pangola grass and signal grass.

The cause of the problem is a high level of oxalates. Calcium oxalate is insoluble and unavailable to the horse.

There needs to be more calcium than oxalate in the pasture for the calcium to be available.

This is where supplementing becomes vital to the horse, but this means the correct formula, which is balanced and assists the uptake of minerals vital to the horses health including calcium and magnesium.

Some horses can also lose weight in wet weather due to the poor nutritional value of grasses, feeding a good balanced ration is essential to maintain a good body condition.

Prevention is far better than waiting for things to go wrong.

Feeding good quality lucerne hay can be of great benefit due to its excellent level of calcium and overall nutritional analysis. Keeping an area fenced off is also ideal so

you have somewhere to bring your horse to when all the other areas are muddy and water logged.

Agood quality high roughage hard feed is essential and during very wet weather it is also worth considering using a really good pro and pre-biotic such as BioEquus, a product such as this will reduce the risk of digestive disorders.

Horses in water logged area tend to ingest a higher level of water and this can be unhealthy.

Make sure when you feed you horse in water logged areas that you have you feeders on the ground, this is the normal way for horses to eat, but I recommend investing in a thick piece of rubber mat-

ting to reduce the ingestion of excess water including stagnant water and mud. Rubber matting can be easily hosed off each day if necessary.

Rubber matting can also be used under hay nets or you can place the hay straight down on the matt.

If you are using haynets don’t have them too high.

Make sure if possible that you horse has shelter so he or she can be out of the rain and have somewhere dry even if only for short relief.

The mystery behind bird catcher spots

Have you ever been curious as to what the small white spots on your horse might be, that just seem to appear out of nowhere, and just as quickly disappear, or move?

They are called bird catcher spots.

There is little in regards to formal studies into these spots, why they appear and then seem to be gone, what causes them or any treatment, but here are some interesting facts about them.

They aren’t specific to any particular breed but seem to be seen more on Arabians and Thoroughbreds.

They are named after the Thoroughbred stallion “Birdcatcher” who was alive during the 1800s and had these spots around his flanks and the top of his tail.

They are thought to be a genetic mutation and can run in families.

Generally found on horses with darker coats (including chestnuts).

The spots appear randomly.

They are not always white in colour but can appear in variations of cream or silver. Areas where they can be found vary from horse to horse.

The most common areas are on the face/legs/chest or back.

Their size also varies but they are not normally more than an inch in size or not greater than say a 20 cent piece. Generally, they appear later in life. Existing spots can disappear, whist more spots can surface in different areas.

Bird catcher spots are not a result of injury or trauma and can appear randomly and can also vary in size.

If your horse suddenly has these random spots appear on its coat, don’t panic it’s not unusual and, if Birdcatcher Spots, will not have any negative health effects on your horse.

If you do have any concern that white marks are appearing as a result of pressure points (common around the saddle area), of course don’t hesitate to seek a professional opinion.

Having the luxury of keeping much-loved horses through their retirement years is an honour many us happily perform for our equine friends.

Older school master ponies are highly valued for the lessons they can teach, but they do need some additional nutritional support to keep them performing.

In this article, I look at how owners can prepare an optimal diet to meet the changing needs of their aging ponies.

Check general and dental health

Continue to take care of teeth, worming or other veterinary issues regularly, even in horses that are no longer ridden.

This allows them to optimally utilize the nutrients they consume.

When planning a diet for your older pony, it is important to know if there are any underlying metabolic or health conditions that impact on the types of nutrients that are suitable to feed.

Forage forms the foundation of any healthy horse diet. Whilst adequate forage usually provides enough protein for mature horses, older horses may need an additional protein source such as lucerne hay or soy/lupins. Horses who lose condition on forage alone can obtain extra calories from a hard feed of suitable cereals, legume grains or super fibres.

All horses need to have minerals added to balance the rest of the intake. Vitamin E should always be supplemented and older horses also need extra vitamin C. Horses often need extra omega-3 oils added to the diet to balance their intake of omega-6.

Provide adequate and appropriate feed

The first step in planning a good diet is to ensure enough pasture is available for grazing and to supplement with hay when pasture is limited or too high in sugars.

This is the key to maintaining gastric health in horses of any age.

Horses need to be able to eat around two per cent of their bodyweight in dry matter per

day to keep their gut functioning optimally. For a 250 kg pony, that adds up to 5 kg of dry matter per day, which could be 6 kg of hay or up to 25 kg of fresh grass!

The horse gut evolved to constantly digest a steady stream of fairly low energy, high fibre forage.

When pasture is in limited supply, underweight or ageing horses need an unlimited supply of quality grass or meadow hay.

Ask your vet or equine dentist if your older pony's teeth allow good utilization of grass or hay.

Horses with worn or missing teeth may need to be fed chaff (and lots of it!) to ensure their roughage needs are met.

If your pony is overweight, has a metabolic condition or is prone to laminitis then you'll need to remove or limit access to grass and provide low sugar hay (see side box) weighing 1.5 per cent of their bodyweight. Slow feeder hay nets can help make the daily ration last longer and to limit the risk of ponies developing gastric ulcers if left without feed for four hours or more.

Add calories - but only when necessary

Most ponies get more than enough calories from forage and only need some form of mineral balancer to receive a healthy diet. However, some older ponies lose digestive efficiency and are no longer able to maintain weight hay and grass alone.

Choosing Low Sugar Hay

Forage for ponies with equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) or insulin resistance as occurs in some ponies with Cushings, requires constant, detailed attention to sugar and starch levels.

 Ideally, choose hay which has been analysed and has a combined ESC + Starch value of less than 10%.

 Avoid high production grasses such as ryegrass and do not feed cereal (oaten, wheaten) hay or chaff.

 If carbohydrate levels of hay are unknown, soak in warm water for 30 minutes or cold water for 60 minutes to remove soluble sugars.

 Drain and discard soak water before feeding. Soaking hay can reduce water soluble carbohydrates by 30%.

 Discard soaked hay after 12 hours if uneaten.

It is the spike in blood glucose and consequently insulin levels that triggers laminitis, so horses with EMS can suffer laminitis without being overweight.

Be prepared to increase the size of hard feeds in response to weight loss but always make sure free choice hay is available for underweight horses.

If you're looking for a feed to put weight on you don't need a feed advertising 'weight gain' on the bag - you only need to add more calories. This is often best achieved by increasing what you already feed.

Make sure your pony is getting enough roughage before increasing hard feeds. The safest way to increase the level of energy (calories) in your pony's diet is with a 'super fibre' like beet pulp, copra or soy or lupin hulls. Other options include legume grains (e.g. lupins), oils or if your pony isn't laminitis prone, cereal grains.

Some of the best diets contain a combination of home mixed plain ingredients or you can choose a premixed pellet or muesli style feed.

Horses with equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) or insulin resistance (IR) who do not maintain weight from forage alone can only safely consume a low GI feed such as beet pulp, copra, legume hulls, lupins or oil.

Most the 'older horse' premixed feeds on the market are based on barley so be sure to read the ingredient list carefully when selecting feeds.

When choosing a hard feed, consider the condition of your older pony's teeth, digestive efficiency and how much time and energy you are willing to put into preparation.

* Super fibres are generally the safest form of calories for older ponies but may require a few minutes soaking.

* Uncooked lupins are also best soaked to soften the seed coat - soak whole lupins for 6 hours or overnight. Cracked lupins soften if soaked in boiling water for 10 minutes.

* Whole oats can be fed raw, but other cereal grains such as barley, oats, sorghum should be fed in a cooked form. You can boil them or buy steam-flaked or micronised.

* You may wish to avoid the cooked grains with added molasses - just check the labelling on the bag.

TIP: Older horses produce less saliva. Dampen hard feeds to aid swallowing and reduce the risk of choke.

When using oils for weight gain, take care to keep the diet anti-inflammatory by providing enough omega-3 fatty acids to balance the added pro-inflammatory omega-6 oils.

The amount you'll need to feed depends on your pony's weight, individual metabolism, level of activity, the amount of energy provided by pasture or hay.

Research shows that some older horses experience a decline in the function and efficiency of their digestive tract but others seem to process feed as robustly as ever.

If your older pony requires a lot of hard feed, it is healthier to give two or more meals per day, with each meal weighing less than 1 kilogram (for a 300 kg pony).

When choosing feeds for older horses consider the condition of their teeth, and their ability to chew and digest feeds. Dampening hard feeds may help.

Adequate roughage usually provides enough protein to meet the daily needs of adult ponies but some older horses are less efficient at digesting protein and may need a supplemental protein source.

Increase dietary protein by feeding lucerne hay or chaff if there is no clover in the pasture or by adding full fat soy or legume products in the hard feed.

Limit lucerne intake to no more than 30 per cent of intake for hay-reliant ponies.

Balance the vitamins, minerals and fatty acids

Feeding your older pony a correctly balanced diet complete with all the vitamins, minerals and fatty acids needed will allow the body to function optimally. This can result in improved 'fuel efficiency' and immune function.

Remember that it is possible for a pony to be deficient in one mineral even if the recommended daily intake is given unless all minerals are provided in correct mineral ratios. Horses produce their own vitamin C supply

from glucose in the liver, but as they age the efficiency declines and an antioxidant supplement containing vitamin C is recommended.

Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation is necessary when ponies are reliant on hay for roughage or consume omega-6 rich oils such as rice bran, canola or sunflower oils.

Omega 3 rich supplements such as algal meal, protected fish oils, linseeds/flaxseeds and stabilized linseed oil can be used to improve the omega 3 to 6 ratio across the whole diet.

Many older horses benefit from the addition of other supplements for assisting with particular conditions.

Examples include oral joint supplements, aids to metabolism, mycotoxin binders and antioxidants.

It is well worth having a qualified nutritionist check your older horse's ration to ensure that it provides all necessary nutrients and is well-balanced.

Spending a little time and money on a good diet analysis often saves money being wasted on inappropriate, expensive, inefficient or unnecessary feeds.

QUEENSLAND ITCH, SWEET ITCH, SUMMER ECZEMA and EQUINE

ALLERGIC DERMATITIS are names for distressing skin conditions which affects horses in spring and summer months throughout Australia and around the world.

The usual cause is a hypersensitivity to the bites of flies (in particular sand flies or midges).

While the bite of the flies are an irritation, some horses develop sensitivity to the bite and will rub themselves so much that they cause injury to their skin.

Research shows the cause is an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the saliva of the midges (as with humans).

Not only that, but once or twice a day, stable lies come to the horse, feed vigorously for a minute or two, and then return to the shade to digest their food. These bites can cause intense irritation in some horses. The bites appear as small raised lumps with a central scab.

The effects on the horses can be dramatic. They suffer intense pruritus (itchiness) on the mane, tail, face, ears and back, resulting in biting, rubbing, hair loss, self-trauma and a change of temperament. They become miserable and irritable.

KURITCH has been specially formulated to help assist this problem effectively, in a number of ways:

Firstly, it repels the biting insects using the combination of the natural repellent “Citronella Oil” and a highly effective repellent “DEET”. Secondly, it soothes the irritated areas thus relieving the horse from biting and rubbing, which in turn allows the normal healing process to begin.

Stress! Did you know stress affects the gut? In pretty dramatic ways!

Prof John Pluske presented a talk at an animal nutrition conference looking at the effect of stress on weanling pigs.

Pigs have a very similar gastrointestinal tract to horses so we often look at pig data when trying to solve problems where there is not enough horse specific information to base my research on.

Prof Pluske showed that stress negatively affects a weanlings pig’s gut.

He explained that the gut’s ability to repair itself and it’s effectiveness as a barrier between gut and body can both being damaged by stress.

Essentially when a piglet is stressed, the gut gets damaged and it then can’t fix itself and it starts to leak.

This seems relevant to horses.

We see this in horses too and with the similarities in gut physiology it seems logical which means we need to be really aware of how we feed and how that impacts on gut health, particularly when a horse gets stressed.

Three important things we need to know:

1. Feeding a fully balanced diet.

This means a diet that meets all nutrient requirements so the gut has the nutrients it needs to remain intact.

2. Feeding lots of forage.

Forage is high in fibre and supports the population of good bacteria in your horse’s gut. These bacteria are very involved in maintaining overall gut health; and

3. Feeding high quality protein.

The gut has huge requirements for specific essential amino acids.

These amino acids are used by the gut to repair and to produce protective mucus. To provide optimum levels of these amino acids you need to use ingredients with high quality protein.

Protein quality is so important for many reasons.

After energy, protein is the most important nutrient in a horse’s diet.

Protein is needed to build good quality hoof, hair, skin, organ tissue, muscles, eyes, blood and bones.

Protein is also a crucial part of enzymes and hormones and is an absolutely essential nutrient in a horse’s diet.

After water, it’s the most plentiful substance in a horse’s body.

But as with many nutrients, ‘proteins ain’t proteins’.

Some protein is of very high quality, other proteins can be so low in quality that they will seriously limit a horse’s ability to grow, reproduce, perform or build muscle.

So what determines protein quality? First, let’s look at what proteins are.

What is protein?

Proteins are long chains of small molecules called amino acids. As a good analogy, think of amino acids as train carriages that join together with other amino acids to form a protein ‘train’.

Amino acids, and therefore proteins, are organic compounds containing carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen and sulphur.

The amino acid puzzle

There are 21 amino acids which can be joined together in almost limitless combinations to form proteins.

Up to 12 of these amino acids can be manufactured by the horse in its body, known as nonessential amino acids.

Under certain conditions like growth or illness, six of these non-essential amino acids must also be supplied in the diet.

These ones are therefore known as ‘conditionally essential amino

acids’.

The remaining nine amino acids are termed Essential amino acids. These essential amino acids cannot be manufactured by the horse and must be supplied by the diet.

The three most limiting amino acids in the equine diet (meaning the amino acids that are likely to become deficient first and limit the horse’s ability to grow, reproduce, perform or build muscle) are lysine, threonine and methionine.

Protein quality

While it is possible, and even likely that horses do absorb some very high quality bacterial protein from their hindgut, a majority of a horse’s protein needs are met by what is fed in the diet.

So the quality of protein you feed is extremely important. Protein quality is determined by how well a particular protein meets a horse’s requirement for amino acids, and particularly the essential amino acids.

In other words, a high quality protein will contain amino acids in very similar proportions to the amino acids a horse needs.

Low quality proteins will either be too low in some of the essential amino acids to meet a horse’s requirement or they will contain essential amino acids that are not available for absorption, again making that protein

unable to meet a horse’s requirement.

Selecting quality proteins

Different feeds contain different levels of the essential amino acids and thus vary in ‘quality’. As a rule, grass hay and pasture contains lower quality protein than legume hay and pasture like lucerne/alfalfa and clover. C4 type grasses also contain lower quality protein than C3 type grasses.

Cereal grains like oats, corn and barley contain lower quality protein than legumes such as soybean, lupins and beans. Co-products like copra meal sit in the middle with lower quality protein than legumes, but better quality than cereal grains.

Of the commonly used protein ingredients in horse feed, heat treated cottonseed meal contains the lowest quality protein of all. Soybean contains the highest concentrations and best combination of many of the essential amino acids and is thus touted as the best quality vegetable protein available.

The absolute Rolls Royce of protein quality is whey protein. It has exceptionally high levels of essential amino acids that match almost perfectly a horse’s needs for protein. Just a small note of caution, if you wish to use whey protein in your horse’s diet, be sure to purchase ‘whey protein concentrate’and not

‘whey powder’.

Whey powder is only about 13% protein and contains over 50% lactose, making it unsuitable for use in equine rations.

Which horses need high quality protein

Not all horses need very high quality protein in their diet. Dry or early pregnant mares and horses in good condition that are either not in work or only in light work have only moderate to low protein requirements that are generally easily met by average to good quality grass pasture and/or hay.

Growing horses, late pregnant and lactating mares, performance horses and any horse needing to build and maintain muscle mass do require high quality protein in their diet. These classes of horse will not do as well as they could unless high quality protein is supplied in the diet.

Grass pasture or hay based diets will generally need to be supplemented with some legume hay or grain for the best results. This is why adding lucerne/alfalfa hay to the diet of horses needing to gain weight is recommended (see our post 7 simple steps for putting weight on your horse). The table below shows the % crude protein and g/kg of lysine in some common feed ingredients.

The FeedXLPremium and Advisor plans include lysine as part of the nutrition analysis of a horse’s diet.

Making sure that crude protein as well as lysine requirements are met in a diet will ensure your horse is getting the level of protein quality it needs.

If your diet is low in lysine, this indicates that the overall protein quality of the diet is low.

In these situations, your horse’s ability to use the protein in its diet to grow, reproduce, build muscle or perform will be limited, even if crude protein requirements are met in the diet.

If your horse’s diet does indicate lysine levels are too low, the following steps to increase lysine are recommended (in order): Substitute some alfalfa/lucerne or clover pasture or hay for grass pasture or hay in the diet, adding up to 1 kg/100 kg of bodyweight (1 lb/100 lb bodyweight).

In most cases, you will find this is enough.

If you use a complete feed, look for feeds that contain high quality protein legumes or if you mix you own feeds add legume grains like soybean, lupins or faba beans/tick beans/field beans to the diet.

Avoid any feeds containing cottonseed meal or unnamed vegetable protein meals.

Small amounts of whey protein concentrate (or whey protein based products) can be used. For best effect in working horses, the whey protein should be fed within 15 minutes of the completion of exercise.

Lysine supplements are also available and can be used to boost lysine levels in your horse’s diet.

You should however be aware that the level of lysine as shown by FeedXLin your horse’s diet is an indicator for overall protein quality in the diet.

Increasing lysine by using legume hays or grains or whey means that along with lysine, you are also adding methionine, threonine and the remaining 6 essential amino acids.

Adding purified lysine will certainly fill the specific lysine deficiency, but it may leave your horse with unquantified deficiencies of other essential amino acids.

Take home message

When looking at protein in your horse’s diet, always remember ‘proteins ain’t proteins’.

Depending on their amino acid composition, some proteins are very high quality with good levels of essential amino acids while others are low in essential amino acids and therefore low in quality.

The high quality proteins, including those from legume forages including lucerne/alfalfa and grains like soybean are able to support growth, pregnancy, lactation and muscle building, while low quality proteins like those from cottonseed meal and cereal grains will not be capable of properly supporting horses with large requirements for quality protein.

Not all horses require high quality protein, but if your horse is pregnant, lactating, growing or working hard and needing to build and maintain muscle mass the quality of protein in the diet will play a big role in determining how well your horse ‘performs’.

Dan Steers grew up in Western Australia. In 2007 Dan won the ACAWestern Australian Reserve Champion Open Campdraft rider, multiple campdrafts and Stock horse futurities.

He conducts regular horsemanship clinics and is well respected for his talent in the entertainment arena.

In 2008 Dan joined his good friend Dan James at El Caballo Spanish Horse Centre where they started performing as “The Dan & Dan Show” each weekend, and thus “Double Dan Horsemanship” was born.

Under the Double Dan Horsemanship banner they travel Australia and more recently the USAteaching, educating and competing.

Brett Parbery has been professionally riding, training and coaching dressage since 2000 with championship titles running into the dozens. The pinnacle of his achievements was being at the World Equestrian Games in 2010, where he came 9th individually which is the highest rank for an Australian dressage rider during the World Championships.

In 2018 he represented Australia as well during the World Equestrian Games in Tryon.

In 2010 he qualified for the World Cup Finals in S-Hertogenbosch and finished 10th.

Teaching your horse to wait and exercise patience while you are doing things like hanging their feed on the fence or tying a Haynet or doing up their rug not only is a safety skill, which saves us from potential injury through being bitten knocked pushed or hit in the head as our horse attempts to eat food that we are still working with. Relaxation has become something of a buzz word in recent times, but there is relaxation and then there is relaxation 'One Horse Life' style.

Ulcers, colic, aggression at feed time are obvious signs of stomach tension, but the list is vast and also includes itchy skin through to behavioural and performance issues eg separation anxiety.

Residual Tension Release Therapy

RTRT provides a continuation under the banner of conscious muscle relaxation training however, this technique differs in that it is provided to the horse via the bit and through the connection to the trainer's own body. This method is unlike anything you or your horse will have experienced before. It is a great tool for introducing the bit to young horses, as well as rehabbing bit trauma for others and it literally purifies the gaits from residual tension. It is done at standstill initially, then can be moved to a long rein version and ultimately be incorporated into ridden work under saddle.

MURWILLUMBAH PONY CLUB CAMP

The Murwillumbah Pony Club will be holding a two day camp on 13-14 April 2024 at Murwillumbah showgrounds.

Instruction will be provided in show jumping, sporting, showriding, dressage, mounted games, theory, Horsemanship, and scary obstacles and lots more.

The program offers something for riders of all ages and interests from the lead line under eight riders up to associates rider 17 yrs and under 26 yrs, Plus a special section for Adult riders of any age Disciplines will include dressage, flat riding, pleasure and bareback showjumping, grid work games, sporting events and much more.

The club operates out of the Murwillumbah Showgrounds and offers great facilities, stables, camping, canteen, new dressage arenas, jumping and sporting equipment, qualified instructors and friendly helpful members.

Better Than Ready colt tops March sale

Acolt by Better Than Ready topped Day

One of the 2024 Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale with a phone bid from Los Angeles Airport coming up trumps.

Will Hulbert, who co-trains alongside his father Peter, purchased the colt while preparing to board a plane to return after an overseas holiday.

Hulbert was on the phone to leading Brisbane trainer Tony Gollan and instructed Gollan to go to $140,000 to secure the top seller on Day One.

The colt is a full brother to the stable's highly rated juvenile The Hammo, who ran a close third in January's $500,000 Magic Millions

The Debut.

"I loved the horse from when I first saw him," Hulbert said.

"He was a bit bigger than his brother at the same time and he's got an engine."

"Hopefully that means this guy will have a bigger engine."

Hulbert said the colt was a natural fit for the stable and would soon meet his full brother who is about to return to full work.

"He's had two weeks pre-training and he will be back in our stable when I land," he said.

"We plan to target the new $1 million Magic Millions (National 2YO Classic) race under the lights on the Gold Coast in May."

The colt was presented at the auction by the Kruger family of Lyndhurst Stud Farm and they were fittingly impressed with the result.

"If there was ever a Better Than Ready that looked precocious, it was this fellow," Jeff Kruger said.

"It was a great result.

"He's always been a lovely precocious looking colt and I'm not surprised at all."

The second top seller of the day was the North Pacific colt from Saluting who was offered by Warrandale Stud as agent for Elegant Thoroughbreds.

That colt, a half brother to six winners from as many runners, was knocked down to the bid of Paul Shailer and Julian Blaxland for $110,000.

Across the day $3.88 million was traded on 114 lots sold at an average price of $34,035.

The clearance rate sits at 66.3 per cent.

"It was a tough day out there for vendors," Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch said.

"It was a disappointing clearance rate, particularly early, but that built a bit as the day went on.

"Momentum toward the end of the day was pleasing and hopefully that can continue.

"Atop price of $140,000 and an average of $34,000 - they are good numbers, but I think the clearance is our only concern at the moment."

Chinny Boom's sister attracts plenty of attention

The full sister to Saturday's impressive Gold Coast winner Chinny Boom, is heading to the same stable after she sold for $230,000 and topped the 2024 Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale.

The Spirit of Boom filly, offered by the McAlpine family's Eureka Stud, attracted a flurry of bids but in the end it was Clinton Taylor that was the successful buyer.

The Rockhampton-based horseman was delighted to secure his number one pick from the auction.

Her full sister won one of the features on Saturday and has eight wins from just 13 starts and earnings of over $500,000. It was confirmed that Chinny Boom had secured a slot in Rockhampton's richest race, the $775,000 The Archer on April 28.

"She was the real stand out of the whole sale," Taylor said of Chinny Boom's sister.

"I hadn't found anything to go close to her.

"I know the family well - and not just Chinny Boom. I also trained the sister Holdin' My

Own who had tonnes of ability.’"

"Let's hope this filly can live up to her sisters and she can be as good as them."

Taylor said he was relieved the gavel fell when it did, as he and his owners were right on their bidding limit.

"We were out of bullets - we were shooting blanks at the end there,” he said.

“It's really exciting. To have the support of the owners as only a young trainer, I can't be anymore grateful."

Taylor said the fact the yearling was being presented by one of Queensland's most successful farms and by their resident champion was another positive.

"The Eureka name speaks for itself,” he said.

“Their horses win week in, week out and Spirit of Boom is one of the best things to have happened for Queensland racing - I love him as a stallion."

The second top seller on the day was Lot 366, the Spirit of BoomKiss for Gran colt from Alexia

Fraser Bloodstock who was knocked down for $160,000. The colt is a half brother to Kisukano and he is heading to Toowoomba's Michael Nolan. Following the second day of selling, the sale gross reached $8.796 million for 264 lots sold at an average price of $33,320 and clearance rate of over 75 per cent.

Magic Millions Managing

Director Barry Bowditch said for the right horses, when they walked into the ring, there was great participation.

"It was fantastic to see Clinton Taylor take home the full sister to one of his flagship horses in Chinny Boom for $230,000," Barry said.

"These are the times we are in. These sales at the lower ends they are feeling the pinch a little bit.

“There's more of those horses in a sale like this so you do struggle a bit with your clearance rate.

"We will continue to work with our breeders going forward to make sure we continue to make this sale viable.”

Eggsy has spent a limited amount of time in professional training and, while he is quiet, he is still green. He has three comfortable paces and a lovely sitting trot which will make him an excellent rider mount.

He is a real dude and enjoys nothing more than being up at the farm, riding trails, going bareback and rounding up the cattle. ITCH, SWEET ITCH, SUMMER ECZEMA and EQUINE ALLERGIC DERMATITIS are names for distressing skin conditions which affects horses in spring and summer months throughout Australia and around the world.

The usual cause is a hypersensitivity to the bites of flies (in particular sand flies or midges).

While the bite of the flies are an irritation, some horses develop sensitivity to the bite and will rub themselves so much that they cause injury to their skin.

Research shows the cause is an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the saliva of the midges (as with humans).

Not only that, but once or twice a day, stable lies come to the horse, feed vigorously for a minute or two, and then return to the shade to digest their food. These bites can cause intense irritation in some horses. The bites appear as small raised lumps with a central scab.

The effects on the horses can be dramatic. They suffer intense pruritus (itchiness) on the mane, tail, face, ears and back, resulting in biting, rubbing, hair loss, self-trauma and a change of temperament. They become miserable and irritable.

KURITCH has been specially formulated to help assist this problem effectively, in a number of ways:

Firstly, it repels the biting insects using the combination of the natural repellent “Citronella Oil” and a highly effective repellent “DEET”. Secondly, it soothes the irritated areas thus relieving the horse from biting and rubbing, which in turn allows the normal healing process to begin.

Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies.

Should your horse already be suffering from the effects of allergic skin dermatitis, ensure you use QUIT ITCH to treat and relieve the effects of insect bites.

Midges breed near stagnant water. As they don’t fly more than a few hundred metres from their breeding area, housing or paddocking your horses more than 500 metres from those areas will reduce their exposure to the flies.
