The Horse Report

World's longest and toughest horse race returns By DANIEL REEDS After a two year absence, the world's longest and toughest horse race, The Mongol Derby, is back with a bang with two races running back to back. Based on the ancient horse messenger system used by Genghis Khan, in a country where the horse is king, at 1000km the Derby is the toughest test on the planet for equestrian endurance riders. Whilst horses are changed roughly every 35km, at checkpoints strung out throughout the country, riders must endure being in the saddle for up to 200km a day and face the challenges of riding over 28 different semi-wild horses, with varying temperaments and bucking abilities, the inevitable falls and mishaps that happen along the way and navigating through challenging terrain, from giant sand dunes to freezing mountain passes. After the COVID pandemic forced the cancellation of the 2020 and 2021 editions, the twelfth Mongol Derby kicked off on the 23rd of July and looks set to be one of the most fiercely contested races to date, currently proving too close to call, with no clear breakaways formed. Riders from 10 nations are competing for the prestigious win, with young Kiwi pair, Sam

Edney and Annie Hackett, having taken an early lead, before age and experience took over in the form of Irishman Patrick Heffron and Brit Chris Walker. Leading the way during the early stages of the race, both are experienced riders in multiple disciplines, but with several days riding left anything could happen and a strong American and Australian contingent are breathing down their necks. Follow the race live at https://equestrianists.com/mongol-derby The second edition of the Mongol Derby kicks off on the 10th of August.

The Horse Report

Manure removal will improve your pastures Have you ever counted how many piles of manure your horse generates each day? Most horses defecate between 814 piles a day, give or take. Consider this quantity spread across your pasture over many months and even years. If your horse doesn’t defecate in one or two specific areas, then you are likely to have more manure littering your pasture than grass. Being selective grazers, your horse tends to avoid grazing grass that has been contaminated with manure. This means that not only is your pasture dirty, but your horse has fewer grassy areas to graze. It might seem like a staggering project to consider removing manure from your fields, but there are definite benefits besides providing more grazing opportunities.

Everyone loves a clean & green paddock for equines. The Pick-A-Poo will help achieve this for you. Cleaning manure from pastures accomplishes several important things: * It reduces internal parasite contamination; * It eliminates breeding habitats for flies; and, * It minimizes adverse effects on water sources from drainage across a manure-ridden pasture The old-fashion style of using a bucket and a rake is quite effective, but labor-intensive. Pik-A-Poo is quickly becoming Australia's champion tow-behind paddock cleaner, designed specifically for cleaning up horse, cow and sheep manure from your paddocks. It also does a great job picking up rocks, sticks, and leaves.

And also, when spun around into 'trailer mode' it can also be used to carry bales, bags, buckets and any other heavy items around your property with ease. Everyone loves a clean and green paddock for equines. But no one likes the dreaded job of constantly cleaning them up. So why not make it a fun and easy job instead. Get your Pik-A-Poo paddock cleaner and hook it up behind your quad, tractor, ute, or whatever you have to tow it with. Simply fix the ropes to your towing point and jump back in the seat. Set off around the paddock with the V-shaped scoop skimming over the ground.

As you drive the Pik-A-Poo across the manure it picks it up and collects it in its tray. It's that easy When you have a full tray simply tow to the Pik-A-Poo paddock cleaner to where you want to empty it and tip it over emptying the contents, flip it back on its side and away you go. It is made by Ox Equipment Group in Warwick, Queensland and is backed with a lifetime warranty and sold through your local reseller. Building an equine arena to last By EAST COAST EQUINE CONSTRUCTION When it comes to arena construction, an important aspect to remember is that every arena is individual, and every arena needs to be assessed individually to determine how best to build it. Whether it be used for different disciplines, the traffic it receives, soil type and many other factors. The Horse Report

Is your property safe for an arrival of a foal? There are many things to consider when preparing for your first foal to be born, one of which is a safe, suitable foaling area. Fencing, ground cover, paddock hazards and shelter are all very important. Foal fencing should reach right to the ground, be strong with no gaps or anything protruding that a foal can be injured on. Repair or replace any areas that a head or hoof can fit through, pay special attention to gateways. Beware of electric fencing, newborns do not have the agility to avoid electric fencing and can become entangled. Introducing a foal to electric fencing should be done under close supervision. Solid fencing lined with strong mesh or shadecloth is ideal. Water troughs and dams are another hazard, wobbly foals often drown in dams, bath tubs and water troughs. Safely and securely cover permanent troughs and tubs, fence off dams and provide water in multiple smaller narrow containers that a foal cannot fit into and can still drink from. Remove any fallen trees, farm equipment or debris to prevent leg injuries. Protection from rain, wind and sun is very important, healthy foals are tough and can handle poor weather very well but they still need protection from the elements, especially extreme heat. Good tree coverage, a shelter shed or lockable walk-in/walkout stable are ideal. One of the biggest risks to foals at birth is bacterial infections. If your mare is foaling outside make sure you have a well-rest-

ed, grassy paddock or yard. If you’re in drought or flood, have bales of clean rodent-free straw ready to spread out as ground cover during foaling as this will reduce the amount of bacteria your foal is exposed to. If you’re foaling down in a stable, make sure it is large enough for your mare to easily move around. Thoroughly clean it and keep bedding fresh and clean. The same applies for paddock shelters. Lastly keep dogs and other animals, especially pigs and poultry, well away and even other horses if unsure on how they will react to a newborn foal. Some horses can become very aggressive and kill or steal foals especially when restricted to smaller paddocks. They can also fight through fences and the foals can become injured in the process. Have the paddock prepared in plenty of time before the mare’s due date as not all mares go full term. Happy foaling.

Gestation period for mares and foaling due date The gestation period for mares is approximately 320-370 days from the first time being bred. To generalize, the estimation of the due date, use a 340 day gestation period. So if you’re wanting your foal to be born in early August, you need to breed your mare in the last week of August or the first few weeks in September. The chart pictured will help you with the dates you plan to breed and and predicting the resulting foaling date. Once you know your mare is in foal and the rough date she is due, as the time nears one of the most stressful things about foaling is the nightly vigils to check your expectant mare. Anyone who has been in contact with foaling mares would know the story of “My mare waxed up today, she should foal very soon”. Two weeks later you’re walking around like a zombie with blood-shot eyes saying, “she'll foal any day now”. When it comes to foaling, on-time human intervention, if needed, is crucial to ensure a successful outcome. For more than 40 years, Magic Breed has earned the trust of breeders, stud farms and broodmare owners as a crucial frontline tool to accurately alert foalwatchers when a mare is readying to foal down. Already the benchmark foal-alert product in Australia and New Zealand, the original Magic Breed monitoring system has been dramatically upgraded to take advantage of modern technology. The new Magic Breed product builds on its worldwide reputa-

Matching your horse's feed to it work rate By LARISSA BILSTON, BAgrSc (Hons 1), Animal Nutritionist, Farmalogic Feeding horses well is both art and science. If you've ever had a horse too fat, too skinny or jumping out of their skin with playfulness then you've probably experienced the effects of a diet mismatched to your horse's energy requirements. "Overfed and underworked" and "He needs more wet saddlecloths" are terms you might hear when horses are fed more than they need for the level of work they perform. The amount and type of food your horse requires is determined by his or her size (weight), workload, age, breeding status and whether you are aiming for weight loss, maintenance or gain.To feed your horse correctly, at any point in time you need to accurately answer the following question: "Does my horse need to lose, gain or maintain bodyweight?" Determine Body Condition Score (BCS) Body Condition Scoring is a useful tool for monitoring the balance between dietary energy (calories consumed) compared to the amount of energy your horse is using (for repairs, keeping warm, working, etc).

Page 18

To feed your horse correctly you need to define its workload There are various body scoring systems available, ranging from five point to nine point scales. They all rely on estimating body fat using a combination of visual assessment and feeling the horse. Define workload The harder your horse works, the more calories his or her body will need to perform the work and maintain body condition. The NRC (National Research Council) defines weekly workloads to help owners and nutritionists ensure that horses are fed appropriately, according to their

www.thehorsereport.com www.thehorsereport.com

daily nutritional needs for their work level. The definitions are: * Maintenance A horse not being ridden or lunged can be defined as a horse at 'maintenance.' You might sometimes see this referred to as being at 'rest' or 'spelling'. Some nutritionists even define whether the unworked horse has a high or low level of activity (depending on the paddock size and temperament of the horse). * Light Work A horse in light work performs

one to three hours per week which might include: 40% walk, 50% trot, 10% canter with an average heart rate of 80 beats per minute (bpm) over the ride. Light work could include horses used for recreational (trail or pleasure) riding, working ponies, horses during the early stages of training or beginning breaking in or show horses given occasional work. * Moderate Work A horse in moderate work is performs 3 - 5 hours per week: 30% walk, 55% trot, 10% canter, 5% low jumps or other skill work with an average heart rate of 90 bpm over each ride. This typically includes horses used for more regular recreational (trail) riding, beginning training/breaking, show horses, dressage, campdraft, polo or polocrosse, stock work, cutting horses, showjumpers and low level eventers. * Hard Work Hard (or Heavy) work is defined when a horse performs 4-5 hours per week: 20% walk, 50% trot, 10% canter, 15% gallop, jumping or other skill work with an average heart rate of 110 bpm over the session. Hard working horses may be performing stock work, polo, high level dressage or show jumping, medium level eventing, race training.  Continued page 19

Consult a nutritionist to help your horse’s health  From Page 18 * Very Heavy Work Very Heavy (or Intense) work is performed by racehorses, elite three day eventers and endurance horses. Their work varies - it can be 1 hour per week speed work or 6 - 12 hours per week of slow work. Their average heartbeat will be in the range 110 - 150 bpm. Once you have identified how hard your horse works, you can use this information to calculate how much food (total intake) is needed each day, and whether hard feed and supplements are required to provide the right levels of energy (calories), protein, vitamins and minerals. How much should I be feeding my horses? Many horses (especially ponies, easy-keepers and horses at rest or in light work) consume all the calories they need from their forage source (that's the pasture, hay and chaff they eat). Do not give a hard feed to an overweight horse - only feed forage and a token feed to carry supplements. If you need to reduce weight further, remove from pasture and limit hay intake to 1.5% of bodyweight, choosing hay with a low sugar and starch content (or soak it to remove water soluble carbohydrates). Hard keepers, breeding, growing and hard-working horses often need a concentrate feed to provide enough calories to maintain body condition or gain weight. Selecting the right hard feed to suit an individual horse is where experience and art come into play. The most reliable way to assess whether your horse is getting enough concentrate feed is to carefully observe changes in body condition provided enough forage is available. If you are feeding plenty of forage and your horse starts to lose weight, increase the size of the hard feed.

Your horse will often need additional hard feed when his regular workload increases. It's normal to need to adjust the amount you feed on a regular basis in response to changes in forage quality or workload. Changes in grass quality are often hard to detect by looking at the plants, but your horse's body condition tells you all you need to know. Your horse will often need more hard feed the regular workload increases, and usually need some changes to vitamin and mineral supplementation. Feeding Horses nutritional supplements The vitamin and mineral requirements of a performance horse kept in a yard or stable and subject to the stresses of intense exercise are higher than when the same horse is spelling at pasture. Green grass is rich in vitamins and Omega-3 oils which are lost as the grass is cut, dried and stored as hay. Hard working horses need more vitamins than resting horses, but their natural vitamin intake is often low because they eat more hard feed and hay and less green pasture. As your horse's access to green grass declines and workload increases, make sure you provide enough additional vitamins and Omega-3 oils as a supplement or ingredient in pre-mixed hard feed. Performance horses need to be fed optimal levels of minerals to

enable their bodies to function efficiently, allowing them to perform to their physical potential. When diets lack essential minerals, or the critical mineral ratios are not balanced, sub-optimal performance is to be expected. All horses, even those grazing very healthy pasture, will be mineral deficient unless supplemented with zinc, copper, iodine and often selenium. Many pastures also lack enough calcium, phosphorous and magnesium to meet even the lower requirements of horses out of work. The type and degree of mineral shortages will depend on the nutrient status of the plants which is not always closely aligned to soil mineral status. When a critical mineral ratio is out of balance it can create an induced deficiency of other minerals even if those minerals are supplied at 100% or more of the recommended daily intake (RDI). The harder a horse works, the higher its need for minerals. For example, a 500 kg horse at rest needs 20 g of calcium a day compared to a 30 g/day requirement for a light workload. The same horse in very hard work needs double his maintenance calcium requirement taking it to 40 g/day. Similar trends exist for other key minerals such as phosphorous,

magnesium, potassium, sodium and chloride. The requirement for sulphur, copper, cobalt, iodine, iron, manganese, selenium and zinc increases with work, but not to the same extent. For example, a resting 500 kg horse needs 100 mg of copper compared to the need for 125 mg when in heavy work. Electrolytes, the minerals used to balance the body's hydration, are very important for working horses and those kept in hot climates. Salt provides two of the most important electrolytes: sodium and chloride, and should be fed every day. Feed salt at the rate of 7 to 12 grams per 100kg of horse bodyweight daily, counting the salt added into premixed feeds. Grass and hay are naturally high in potassium, another major electrolyte. Give extra salt or a commercial electrolyte replacer during very hot weather and after heavy work to replace the electrolytes lost in sweat. A correctly balanced diet will add the vitamins, minerals and omega3 fatty acids necessary to top the levels in the diet up to at least daily minimum requirements. It must also balance critical ratios across the whole diet, taking the mineral levels of roughage, hard feeds and supplements into consideration. Performance horse owners are often pleasantly surprised that a few changes in the mineral balance of the diet can lead to an increase in feed-use efficiency and a smaller feed bill. However, adding too many of the wrong supplements can cause an imbalance, possibly leading to deficiencies, poor performance and money wasted. A small investment in the services of a qualified equine nutritionist will often pay for itself very quickly by reducing waste whilst improving your horse's health and nutrition.

Different oils do different functions for horses There really are no “bad” oils or fatty acids for horses. Horses must consume both linoleic acid (omega-6) and alpha-linolenic acid (omega3), because their bodies lack the enzymes needed to synthesize them. Any oil, if used properly, will be oxidized for energy and incorporated into cell membranes as required. However, some oils are definitely considered better than others. The ratios of these two fatty acids differ among various fat sources—many oils and foods are much higher in one type than the other. Corn oil and some other vegetable oils contain a higher proportion of omega-6s. Fish oils contain higher levels of the omega3s, which have many health benefits. Flaxseed and linseed oils are also rich in omega-3s. But because omega-6 and omega3 work hand-in-hand within the horse’s body, equine nutritionists place more emphasis on maintaining the proper balance or ratio between the two rather than focusing on the total quantity of either one. Adding oils to your horse’s diet has a wide range of benefits, from providing slowrelease non-heating energy to improving coat condition or added to feed to aid weight gain. There are a great range of oils that you can feed your horse. While they will all deliver the same amount of energy, each will contain differing amounts of omega fatty acids.

Flax oil is one oil that helps horses maintain strong hooves, glossy coats and good condition and is also a slow-release non-heating energy source, easy to digest and a rich source of omegas 3 and 6. It can also help to aid absorption of other

supplements. When talking coat condition and skin problems in horses, there are topical oils, oil blends and hot oils that are available. Consult your vet for further information on what may be best for your horse’s condition.

Flax Seed Oil provides the richest (almost 60%) natural source of Omega 3, an essential fatty acid (EFA) which is not generally present in equine foods. Like all animals, horses cannot manufacture this essential fatty acid which is so important for their overall health.

Endocrine conditions of the horse By KARYN CAMPBELL Naturopath and Equine Herbalist ©Hi Form Australia 2022 The Endocrine System consists of the reproductive organs, pancreas, pineal body, thyroid, adrenal glands, pituitary and parathyroid glands. So, what does the endocrine system do? The endocrine glands release hormones (chemical messengers) to provide internal communications into the bloodstream and allows them to travel to the cells then on to other areas of the body to perform their designated tasks. Horses can develop disorders when the glands either over secrete or under secrete hormones. This is also the case if a tumour develops on the organ or gland. Horses can develop disorders such as Cushing’s Syndrome (PPID) Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction, Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS), Insulin Resistance (IR). Cushing’s: Cushing’s disease is a result of a benign tumour on the pituitary gland. This will result in increased release of several hormones, with the most common being ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone). The thing about ACTH is that it will trigger the adrenal glands to produce more cortisol which is a form of steroid. The clinical signs that are associated with

Page 24

Signs your horse may have Cushing's include shaggy coat, pot belly and increased drinking.

Cushing’s are usually due to the over production of cortisol. Cushing's Disease can affect any breed of horse and typically affects horses greater than 15 years of age. Cushing’s clinical signs are laminitis and long shaggy coat. Other signs can be ravenous appetite, increased drinking and urination, lethargy, pot belly, skin and respiratory infections. Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS):

EMS is a disorder that is associated with the inability to regulate insulin levels in the blood. It usually will affect ponies, donkeys, Arabians, Warmbloods and horses that have the ability to survive harsh conditions. When these horses are kept in an environment where they have access to high carbohydrates with minimum to little exercise their calorie intake is quite large.  Continued page 25

Diagnosis is crucial for proper treatment  From page 24 This generally affects horses and ponies that are 15 years of age and younger. EMS clinical signs are increased fat deposits around the base of tail, ribs, neck and crest. It may include a history of laminitis and insulin dysregulation. Insulin Resistance (IR): IR in horses is where there is a significant increase in insulin levels within the blood. The insulin can no longer stimulate tissues to uptake glucose correctly. The pancreas will produce more insulin to compensate to move the glucose in to the cells to prevent hyperglycaemia. IR clinical signs are abnormal weight gain, loss of muscle tone or stamina, excessive water consumption, colic and laminitis. Diagnosis: PPID- Blood test measuring ACTH, low dose Dexamethasone Suppression Test (DST) to measure cortisol levels. EMS - Blood glucose and insulin level measurements, Oral Sugar Test (OST), Insulin Tolerance Test (ITT). IR - intravenous glucose tolerance test (IVGTT), Oral Sugar Test (OST). Treatment: PPID- medication Pergolide and occasionally

minerals and vitamins. IR - The same as EMS. Modification of diet in the form of (NSC) non-structural carbohydrate restriction so reduced calories. Increase in exercise, supplements to provide minerals and vitamins. Include the medication Metformin for horse's sensitive to insulin.

Teaching the restriction of movement By TANJA KRAUS The good, the bad, and the ugly. As horse owners, at some point we are going to restrict our horses movement. Tieing him up, trailering, stalling, stabling and riding are all ways we can restrict the freedom of movement of our horses and a necessary part of horse ownership. But did you know that the way you restrict movement has a huge impact on your horse’s mental health and can promote calmness and confidence or shut down and learned helplessness depending on the who, what, when, where and why? It is so important that we look past the apparent success of our task, and consider the body language and processes of the horse. For example, a horse that is tied, trailered, stalled etc and goes through a phase of distress or fight (calling, pawing, fighting against ropes or panels), and then arrives at a place of 'calm' could have succumbed to the final phase in the prey animal’s

Teach your horse about restrictions of movement so he or she will learn to accept this and be less stressed. survival mechanism - acceptance of death, and is simply demonstrating this. It is often after this

acceptance phase that 'learned helplessness' kicks in, as the horse also arrives at the understanding that he has no further options. Prior to the acceptance of death phase comes; - Do the opposite of what the predator says Run away from the predator - Fight the predator - Push into pressure and finally - Accept your fate. This is why the idea of 'letting him figure it out' in the cases of separation anxiety and situations of that nature can appear to have 'worked' as the horse gives up his options. Restrictions of movement can also result in a horse that appears more trainable, quiet

and accepting, as he believes he has no alternatives. I am not suggesting a world in which we do not restrict the movement of our horses, as this would be both unrealistic and unsafe, but one where we consider how we are training these things. Take hobbles for example. You can throw a set of hobbles on a horse, let him fight, struggle and figure out he can't go anywhere, and you'll have a horse that is 'hobble trained', but he will also have a little bit less spirit. Introduce the idea of hobbles through training and confidence building and you'll have a happy and confident hobble trained horse. Teach a horse to be trailered by loading him and then 'quickly shutting the back' so he can't escape will teach him he can't leave the trailer - but he may still be worried and tense about it. Teach him to load confidently and with time, and you'll have a horse that trailers confidently. Teach a horse to look to you when he is anxious or worried because you know what to do, makes him feel confident and happy in your presence, rather than teaching him he can only rely on himself, even after asking you for help. In closing, it is crucial that we remember that one of a horses natural coping mechanisms to stress is to move their feet. Taking this away doesn't remove the desire or need, it simply causes the horse to shut down and look for alternative coping methods, for example stereotypical behaviour such as weaving, crib biting or a complete disconnect to the environment. www.horsemanshipforperformance.com

Reports from Technyflex sponsored riders Supplied by TECHNYFLEX Stories from sponsored riders Nathan Harvey is presently knuckling down and preparing for the Special Olympics qualifier to compete in Berlin in 2023. He previously competed for Australia at the 2019 Special Olympics in Abu Dhabi where he won two gold medals and one bronze in Dressage. In early September he will fly from Melbourne to Brisbane to complete in two dressage tests and an equitation riding event. In the past two years Nathan has been bonding with his new horse, Gwarryen Adela, a six-year-old Trakehner mare by 'Tallyho Something Spicy' and they are now placing well against a strong field of talented riders. Also, he is still working his stallion, Kiteroa Dominic, on which he has won many state and national Para titles. "Our horses work very hard during training each day. They need to be carefully looked after and Technyflex does this with its unique formula to repair damaged tissue and muscle,” Nathan said. "My next event with Adela will be at the forthcoming Hygain Tatura Dressage Series. We'd love for you to say hello and discuss Technyflex with us."

Rhys Stones on Tulara Colmar ( Above) and ES Ella (Below)

Rhys Stones, one of this country's finest allround equestrians, who now heads Riverton Performance Horses, had some great rides at the recent Caboolture Festival of Showjumping with 'Tulara Colmar' and Daybreak Farm's 'ES Ella'. He speaks very highly of Technyflex Equine. "I've been using it for over twelve months and have noticed a significant change in my horses' performance. Incorporating Technyflex into their diet has improved their recovery time and alleviated any joint stiffness after big competitions!" he said.

Nathan Harvey and Gwarryen Adela

Australian eventer and coach, John Twomey, now based in Johannesburg, has continued his run of success, this time at the South African Interprovincial Championships in July held at the Northern Farm Equestrian Park. He won the 2** on Coreen Barker's 'Buellsport Macgyver', and came fifth with his mare, 'Peridot', co-owned by Quinton George. John's new wife, Joji, riding 'Just Jasper' finished on their 33.5 dressage score to win the EV85. "Many thanks to all the sponsors, volunteers, to Joji, who's my biggest fan and, of course, to Technyflex," John said.

Victoria Davies and Joyero JF III

Paralympian Victoria Davies has now resumed working with her Lusitano stallion, 'Celere', who she rode at the recent Tokyo Paralympic Games. "I used the past three months to give him a well-earned rest before we get ready to campaign for the Paris Paralympic Games' qualifiers beginning later in the year,” Victoria said. “The break has done him good; he feels fantastic and happy to be back doing something. "And I'm over the moon with how Joyero JF III (Imp) ("Luis") is going with our training. The power and strength he's developing feels amazing. “Luis is a lot of horse for my petite frame but he's so incredibly comfy and reliable that he's a delight to ride despite all my medical challenges."Both stallions stand at Victoria's Tora V PRE & Lusitano Stud Bolong, NSW

Australia represented in 5 disciplines BY EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA This year's CHIO Aachen World Equestrian Festival, which ran from 24th June to 3rd July, saw Australia represented in all five disciplines - dressage, driving, eventing, jumping, and vaulting. There was also no shortage of Australian supporters cheering on our athletes, and they displayed plenty of the team spirit and camaraderie. Vaulting The vaulting competition kicked off CHIO Aachen in style, and following tradition, the vaulters performed in the circle in the Albert-Vahle Arena. Stephanie Dore was the sole Australian vaulter at this year’s event, competing on the beautiful grey horse Corazon Gran, who was lunged by Maurits de Vries. In the Compulsory Test, Stephanie scored 6.945 to finish in 22nd place, and in the Technical Test she scored 7.194 to finish in 12th place. The following day Stephanie and Corazon Gran again took to the arena for the exciting Free Test to Music, scoring 7.314 and finishing in 20th place. However, at the end of the overall competition, Stephanie finished in 19th place. Stephanie's accomplishment is all the more impressive given that she intended to compete on a different horse at CHIO Aachen. However, when that horse became lame at the last minute, Corazon Gran's owners, Christina Hubert and Benita Julia Golze, generously allowed Stephanie to compete on him instead. “I was entered on another horse from Denmark, where I had been training for two weeks; and then that horse was lame when we went to load him on the float,” she said. “Benita and her mum Christina very kindly let me go on him (Corazon Gran) so I’ve only been on him once before the competition.” Not only was team spirit shown in the vaulting arena, but it was also shown out of it, when a sudden downpour threatened to flood the venue. Without a second thought, the vaulters changed out of their glamorous costumes and into gumboots to help the CHIO Aachen team clean up and Page 30

FEI Youth Equestrian Games The FEI Youth Equestrian Games were held for the very first time at CHIO Aachen in 2022. The historic Games were created to replace the Dakar 2022 Youth Olympic Games, which were postponed to 2026. Thirty athletes from six continents, all aged between 15 and 18 years, competed in Individual and Team Jumping competitions, all on borrowed horses. Australia’s Maleah LangMcMahon was allocated the 10year-old chestnut gelding, Calypso Du Buguet, with whom she quickly formed a strong partnership which was evident in the competition arena. Over the course of the competition, Maleah and Calypso Du Buguet performed impressively, only knocking down three rails for the entire duration. The pair also jumped a perfect clear round in the individual final over fences 1.30m in height, making it through to the jumpoff, finishing in 13th place. "The individual final was something like no other. For me to get into the jump-off was a bonus,” Maleah said. “The class, the atmosphere, the people were incredible, and I’ve made life long friends here. It’s been an event I will never forget

and I’m eternally grateful to everyone who helped get me here.” Dressage Australia was represented by three combinations in the CDIO5* Nations Cup competi-

Out in force at CHIO Aachen this year  From page 30 Eventing In the CCIO4* competition Andrew Hoy and Vassily de Lassos, owned by Paula and David Evans, showed why they are undoubtedly one of the greatest combinations in the sport, finishing in second place in the prestigious SAP-Cup. Following the dressage phase of the competition, Andrew and Vassily were in 16th place, but jumped up the standings in the showjumping phase, delivering the first clear round for the competition, which sat them in ninth position heading into the crosscountry phase. After an influential cross-country test, the pair secured their place on the podium with a magnificent cross-country round. They galloped around the Rüdiger Schwarz-designed course to finish with no jumping faults and only one time penalty. Despite the single penalty, they were the fastest combination on

course for the day. Andrew credits the outstanding performance to his special bond with Vassily. "He is just the most extraordinary horse. We have got the most wonderful partnership,” Andrew said. “Out of his entire career, he has only had a total of 10 seconds outside of the time since he started his international career in 2015. “He came to me in 2017 and ever since then I have been the only person ever to sit on him. I have just always wanted to keep this partnership very special. “He is a very special horse; he gives his absolute heart, but he gives it with passion. He doesn’t give it because he has to give it. It comes from him because he just loves what he does." Driving This year Australia had two combinations entered in the

Tor van den Berge and his team during the marathon.

four-in-hand combined driving competition at CHIO Aachen. The competition was made up of three phases – dressage, marathon and cones. Driving legend, Boyd Exell, took top honours, claiming victory with a score of 158.32, more than eight points ahead of second place. Boyd proved a force to be reckoned with from early on, taking the lead in the dressage phase challenging the other competitors to close the gap during the other two phases. Despite the other competitor’s best efforts, Boyd and his team secured the overall win. “We couldn’t have asked for any more from the horses,” Boyd said of his team. Tor van den Berge, also competed in the combined driving competition and finished in 20th position on a score of 293.01. Together, Boyd and Tor represented Australia in the Nations

Way competed in the CSIO5* competition, holding their own against some of the world’s leading combinations. The pair stepped into the Soers Arena for the first time to contest the CSIO5* Turkish Airlines Prize of Europe and were first on course, dropping two rails to finish in 51st position. However, they bounced back in spectacular style, tackling the imposing 1.60m Prize of North Rhine-Westphalia. Hilary and Oaks Milky Way jumped an outstanding clear round, with just three time penalties, to finish in 20th position from a field of 54 starters. Jump & Drive One of the favourite evening events at CHIO Aachen is the spectacular CHIO Cup, the combined eventing, jumping and driving competition - which calls for fast horses and good teamwork. John Wicks shows his skills at Nationals Supplied by REIGNING AUSTRALIA The Reining Australia 2022 National Show, featuring the biggest prize pool so far in Australia, has been dominated by John Wicks. John was in hot form and was fortunate enough to win some big feature classes and some great prizes and money plus receiving a 'Legend Award'. The build up to this show has been years and years in the making and literally a lot of blood, sweat and tears. It's been a huge amount of work for years behind the scenes with a big team effort. On the Wednesday night, action started with the (COVID CANX) 2021 Thomas Arena Products and Reining Trainers Australia (RTA) Gold Buckle Open Futurity where John managed to get Reserve Champion on MPH La Revolution for Sarah Mammone on her beautiful horse 'Teo'. He scored a fourth on Big River Custom LJ 'Bud' for Julie Hughes and Bel. Bud went awesome on the night, but was rated hard on his second set of circles and got an out of lead penalty that really hurt his score. Thanks to the sponsors of this class Thomas Arena Products, Lil Joe Cash - Australia and Equine Communications. On the Friday night John was fortunate enough to win the Australian Quarter Horse Association Open Derby on 'Big River Custom LJ'. Congratulations goes to owners Julie Hughes and Bel Hughes and thanks to the sponsors of this class; Shiney Outlaw, Bridle from Q Vista Quarter Horse and Shawn Flarida Reiners. Also a special mention Lorraine Wylie for breeding such a special horse. Then on the Saturday night with hardly any sleep all week,

The win included a $25,000 winners cheque, the trophy saddle by Trails End and the Gold Bullen donated by long term Reining supporter ONYA Quarter Horses. ONYA Quarter Horses also sponsored the Rider's Champion ring. This was an incredible gold ring for the rider, thanks Ray Gabbert. Thanks to the sponsors Thomas Arena Products, Trails End, Simply Sensational Garlands, Blue Creek Saddle and ONYA Quarter Horses Special mention to Angel Marsh filly Dunitallkindachick by Lil Nu It All and 88 Reining's filly Sheza Lil Gun by Colonels Shining Gun. These are great little fillies but it wasn't their show this time round.

Thanks to Yves Cousinard and Christine Bayer at Pacific Performance Horses for breeding Whiza Lil Cash and Sheza Lil Gun for clients 88 Reining back when the dream was first thought up. A huge thanks to the hard working Reining Australia committee and volunteers for putting on a great show. Also thanks to Madi Gauci who works tirelessly and awesome farrier Glenn Wyse that looks after all the horses' feet so well. Also a special mention and thanks to the girls that helped present all the horses so beautifully - Madi Gauci, Sarah Mammone and Zoé Hollis and to all the judges and scribes for the massive days in the chairs and hours and hours of concentration. Thanks to the official photographer Ken Anderson and his wife Julie. John Wicks has achieved his third 'Living Legend' award at the RA Nationals dinner. John's Story: John started riding horses at the age of six and he was always riding growing up. He attended pony club and com-

peted in gymkhanas from a young age. In his teens, he did camp drafting and show jumping and then in his late teens he had a break from horses and did an apprenticeship. John started riding again in his early 20s. In the early days, and still now, he admires Ian Francis and Mick Connelly. John's natural training talent became apparent shortly after he started competing in Reining in 1993 and it wasn't long before he was placing and winning at State and National Shows as a non-professional. It was obvious that John had a talent for Reining and an affinity with horses. As of 2016, John has spent the last 23 years competing in Reining and training horses professionally for the public for 19 years. Every year John is more determined than ever on achieving greater success with his career. High Achievements: John Wicks has won numerous State and National Derby Titles, numerous State and National Open Horse Titles and is a six time National Futurity Champion in 2001, 2005, 2007, 2013 & 2016 & 2022. In 1995 he represented Australia at the International Reining Council in Oklahoma, USA. John was part of the Australia Reining Demonstration Team for the Sydney 2000 Olympics and got to show case the sport of Reining in front of a crowd of 20, 000 equestrian enthusiasts. He has also been awarded two Reining Australia Legends Awards and in 2014 he represented Australia at the World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France and has been inducted into the Australian Reining Hall of Fame.

Price: $ 10,000. 14.2 hh Reg: Riding Pony | EA | SHC Bay Gelding YOB: 2014 Sire: Millawarrah Magnitude Dam: El Jackie In his newcomer year pulling champions at every show he’s been to, in both open and led classes, eligible part welsh Arabian derivative. Easy to do everything with, travels beautifully. Can take out alone or in company, loves to go for a trail ride. Straight from float to ring no warm down needed. Great to lunge, soft snaffle mouth more whoa than go. Would suit a confident teen/ adult. I’ve had kids in him on the lead and was great. “BYE BYE FLY” QUEENSLAND ITCH, SWEET ITCH, SUMMER ECZEMA and EQUINE ALLERGIC DERMATITIS are names for distressing skin conditions which affects horses in spring and summer months throughout Australia and around the world.

T

he usual cause is a hypersensitivity to the bites of flies (in particular sand flies or midges).

While the bite of the flies are an irritation, some horses develop sensitivity to the bite and will rub themselves so much that they cause injury to their skin. Research shows the cause is an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the saliva of the midges (as with humans).

KURITCH has been specially formulated to help assist this problem effectively, in a number of ways: Firstly, it repels the biting insects using the combination of the natural repellent “Citronella Oil” and a highly effective repellent “DEET”. Secondly, it soothes the irritated areas thus relieving the horse from biting and rubbing, which in turn allows the normal healing process to begin. It achieves this by the inclusion of the natural antiseptic “Eucalyptus oil” and nd Camphor oil” which naturally relieves es itchy skin. These significant benefits are also so enhanced by the “Rain Resistant” and nd “Low irritant” formula. As it doesn’t n’t contain alcohol (prevalent in most fly sprays) it won’t “sting” the horse. It can an also be applied to surface wounds, s, minor cuts and skin abrasions to help lp prevent irritation and possible infecction by nuisance insects. Registered by the APVMA in Australia for over 40 years, extennsive field experience has proven en KURITCH to be a most effective ve solution for both preventing and nd healing distressing skin conditions ns caused by biting insects.

Not only that, but once or twice a day, stable lies come to the horse, feed vigorously for a minute or two, and then return to the shade to digest their food. These bites can cause intense irritation in some horses. The bites appear as small raised lumps with a central scab.

As well as KURITCH as a repellent, nt, so environmental management will also assist in protecting your horse.

The effects on the horses can be dramatic. They suffer intense pruritus (itchiness) on the mane, tail, face, ears and back, resulting in biting, rubbing, hair loss, self-trauma and a change of temperament. They become miserable and irritable.

Midges breed near stagnant water. er. As they don’t fly more than a few w hundred metres from their breeding ng area, housing or paddocking your ur horses more than 500 metres from m those areas will reduce their exposure re to the flies.

Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies. Should your horse already be suffering from the effects of allergic skin dermatitis, ensure you use QUIT ITCH to treat and relieve the effects of insect bites. Since the 1970’s, QUIT ITCH has been an essential weapon in the fight against skin disorders in horses.
