Australian Boyd Exell is the FEI's Best Athlete for 2015 after dominating in the sporting discipline of Driving. Photo: John Lechner

Exell honoured at FEI Awards Australia's own World Driving Champion Boyd Exell is equestrian's man of the moment after being honoured by the sport's international governing body, the Federation Equestre International (FEI). Exell was announced Reem Acra Best Athlete for 2015 at the FEI's Gala Awards Ceremony which was held in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He was presented with his award by FEI President Ingmar De Vos and American film and television actress Bo Derek who is Chair of the Awards Jury. The FEI Awards recognise outstanding contributions to the progress and excellence of equestrian sport within and out of the arena. The Best Athlete award is presented to an athlete who has demonstrated exceptional skill and taken the sport to a new level. Exell currently holds both the indoor and outdoor individual world Driving titles. Earlier in 2015 he wrote history by winning the (indoor) FEI World Cup Driving title for the sixth time, eclipsing the previous record of five. Also in 2015 Exell was awarded the Ariat International Athlete of the Year Award at the Equestrian Australia Sport Achievement Awards Night. It followed his gold medal winning performance in the individual Driving at the FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG) in

2014. At these Games he was one of five in the Australian team to represent Australia at their fifth WEG. In winning best athlete, Exell edged out a who's who of equestrian superstars including Olympic and World Equestrian Games medallists William FoxPitt, Charlotte Dujardin, Ingrid Klimke and Jeroen Dubbeldman, as well as the World Vaulting Champion Jacques Ferrari. Chair of Equestrian Australia, Judy Fasher said Boyd was a deserving winner. "There is no disputing Boyd's skill and horsemanship and his achievements in the sport of Driving are unparalleled," she said. "We are both pleased and proud of Boyd's success and the international recognition he has received through winning the FEI Reem Acra Best Athlete."

Top bronc riders qualify for champs WHILE the New South Wales riders won the day at the recent Warwick Rodeo Australian Championships, six cowboys from southern and central Queensland are pressing hard in the new season. The Australian Professional Rodeo Association season started on May 1 and finishes in April 2016 and the top-15 will qualify for the Australian championships. Warwick pair Michael Maher and Mark Collins are on top of the current standings after finishing in the same order in the 2015 season standings. Millmerran cowboy John McNamee is third in the standings followed by Mitchell rider Greg Hamilton. Springsure cowboy Allan Powell is fifth and Clayton Braden from Clermont sixth. Maher has won the past two saddle bronc rides at the Mt Isa Rodeo and last year's title in Warwick. Both Maher and Collins were placed in a round at the Warwick Rodeo Australian Championships last month but didn't enjoy the dream they were hoping for.

McNamee has grown in stature in the APRA in the past year and isn't afraid to travel and has a win in South Australia to add to his credit this season. Hamilton is one of the most consistent riders in saddle bronc

in the APRA. Powell and Braden have started the new season to be in the top six and are part of a large group of rodeo stars from Central Queensland in the top-15 across all events.

Most of the six saddle bronc riders at the top of the standings are expected to head to the Christmas run of seven rodeos in southern NSW, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania starting on Boxing Day at Myrtleford in north-east Victoria. The final two rodeos on the Christmas Run are on January 9 at Beechworth in Victoria and Carrick in Tasmania. The one Queensland rodeo during the holiday period is the Alton Downs Double Dip on December 31-January 1. Many of the riders from the northern half of the nation will have a short break now. The APRA program for December and January is: December 5 - Rosewood (NSW); December 26 - Myrtleford (Vic) Golden Spurs Rodeo; December 27 - Carrieton (SA); December 31-January 1 - Alton Downs (Qld) Double Dip; January 1 - Tumbarumba (NSW) 71st Rodeo; January 2 - Yarrawonga (Vic); January 8 - Finley (NSW); January 9 - Beechworth (Vic), Carrick (Tas) Bull Ride and Rodeo Spectacular.

Salt plays a key role in horse diets By TIFFANY BENNETT Equine Specialist Olsson Pacific Salt Getting your horse’s feed right can be complicated business. What is simple is the horse’s need for salt however - often it seems to be the essential macro mineral that is left out. Salt is an essential all horses need and all horses will naturally seek out salt. So much so that in the NSW Department of Primary Industries guide to “Caring for Horses” it is stated that all horses require access to fresh water and salt. Why is salt so important? Here are a few salty facts: - Salt is the only mineral horses will seek out - Horses are able to self regulate their salt intake - Salt is the only essential mineral absent from all grass and hay - Salt controls your horse’s water intake, salt deficiency can lead to dehydration - Together with potassium, salt regulates the osmotic pressure within living cells - Most mineral related problems in horses are by either a calcium or salt deficiency Signs of Salt Deficiency - Inadequate water consumption often presenting as dehydration - The licking or eating of objects that may contain salt (bark, dirt or stones) - Excessive sweating - Long term may lead to weight loss,

Licking or eating of objects can often be a sign of salt deficiency.

decreased appetite, weakness and reduced growth Optimum Salt Intake Cool weather: 2 – 4 tablespoons per day Hot Weather: 4 – 8 tablespoons per day Horses who are undertaking hard work will require more salt. How to Feed Salt Often, salt is fed in a salt block or lick however, most horses are not able to meet their salt needs sufficiently from a block as they won’t tend to spend the time needed to lick that much salt. Some salt blocks also have trace minerals added. Often, horses that are chasing salt will consume these blocks at rates that don’t enable

the minerals to be absorbed. It will be more cost effective to provide both salt and your mineral block. Research shows that providing loose salt ad libitum, allowing the horse to take what they need is often the best solution. If you have horses in together provide several buckets of salt to ensure they all get access (you know those horses I’m talking about!) or try putting extra salt in their feed bins before or after their feeds. If you are adding salt to your horses feed introduce it slowly as most do not like their feed too salty. Start with ½ a teaspoon and build the amount up over a period of time. Many processed feeds have some salt Check the labels. If you have any concern about your horse salt intake always speak with your veterinarian. The Simple Salty Low Down - All horses need access to salt and fresh water - They need twice as much salt in hot weather then cold - More salt is needed when they have a greater workload - They may not be getting their salt requirements from a lick or block - Horses can regulate their own so needs - The best method of feeding salt is to provide it ad libitum So if your horse is not being fed any salt get some out of the cupboard and start today.

What is High Suspensory Disease? By DAVID LOVELL BVSC

A horse’s suspensory system comes under enormous strain when at speed, especially combined with the weight of it and the rider. High Suspensory Disease is what is known as an “Insertional Desmitis”. A ligament, by definition, is a relatively inert band of fibrous tissue that has both its origin, and insertion, in bone. It serves both a support and suspension function in its action to absorb the forces of impact and load as the horse’s hoof strikes the ground and bears the load of the body during the stance phase of stride. One can envisage the enormous load and weight that the individual support limb must bear if we consider that 500kg of horse, trav-

elling at some degree of speed must all be borne by a single, relatively small, support pier, that is the leg of the horse. Coupled with this is the effect of 60 – 100kg of rider complicating the issue by contributing leverage forces above the centre of gravity of the horse. It stands to reason that any instability or asynchrony in the ground surface, or the rider’s timing will distort the directions and degree of load, diverge from what is natural and what the horse has evolved to sustain, and injury and damage can occur. The suspensory system consists of several components; the origin is from the bone at the back of the upper cannon bone, just under the knee, and between the heads of the splint bones. Way back in evolutionary time, probably when the horse still had several functional digits, the structure actually had a muscular origin. As the requirement for extreme load support evolved, the muscle gradually disappeared and the origins became ligament. Even now, however, there may be some small amounts of muscular tissue present in the origins in some horses. This residual muscle has been one of the problems that have contributed to the establishment of difficulty in diagnosis as this tissue can be mistaken of “tears” of the structure on ultrasound and a false diagnosis be made. The main body of the ligament then proceeds down the back of the cannon, divides into two branches distally and each attaches to one of the sesamoid bones behind the fetlock. The distal suspensory ligaments then “turn the corner” behind the back of the fetlock and proceed to insert in the back of the pastern bones. Each and every part of the component structures is liable to injury and damage, and once integrity is lost, continued load on the damage tissue almost always prevents,

High suspensory disease is one of the more common, least well understood, and very certainly one of the more difficult syndromes to properly diagnose in horses. It, along with “sore” feet, and navicular syndrome, quantify the “Big Three” lameness causes in performance horses. Concurrently, it is also regarded as one of the most difficult syndromes to successfully treat, and often spells the end of a performance horse’s career. I believe we have developed a very successful methodology for treatment of the condition but it requires a lot of commitment from the owners because it requires intense, relatively aggressive management and certainly input of a lot of time and resources. This is why it is critical to precisely and correctly establish a confirmed diagnosis because here is absolutely no point embarking on a treatment regime that requires a lot of input if one is not treating the correct problem. The key element in successfully treating and managing any issue has to be based on a proper understanding on the exact nature of what the problem is and how it occurs.

or hinders, healing. Problems with the bodies of the ligaments and sesamoid bones are rarely seen in slower speed performance horses and usually occur as a result of the magnified load applied during high speed maximal exercise. Problems at the origins and insertions of the system occur in all disciplines but are more common in the sub maximal speeds and chronic repetitions of load imbalances due to ground surface and rider imbalances encountered in “pleasure” horse disciplines. To further understand the true nature of the problem, one has to realise that the origin and insertion of the ligament consist of many thousands of microscopic fibres that emerge and align merge as support fibres to make up the ligament. The degree of injury and the level of “lameness” displayed by the horse are directly related to the total numbers of fibres that are damaged. What usually happens is that rather than a one of catastrophic occurrence, as seen for example in the racehorse), the progression of the damage in slower horses with repetitive low grade injury is much more insidious and cascades over time. The fibres tear out and separate from the bone leaving a “gap” that haemorrhages and fills with blood. It stands to reason that if the load continues to be applied to the area, by repetition of the mechanical imbalances that have caused the tear in the first place, healing is never going to occur. Relating now specifically to high suspensory disease, we are talking about a tearing out of the palmer surface of the upper cannon bone, of the fibres of origin of the proximal part of the suspensory ligament. As stated earlier, this is a relatively common lameness. It is very rare however, for there be any display of obvious or detectable clinical signs. The damaged areas are in the very upper part of the cannon, and interestingly, more often to the outside of the upper cannon. There are two biomechanical factors involved. Firstly, more obviously, the ligament extends from a fixed origin proximally, to a fixed insertion distally. This presents a finite length of the structure. The ligament is composed of a very large numbers of tightly packed, relatively inelastic fibres. Obviously the greater the arc of convexity or sinking of the fetlock, that occurs during impact and stance, the greater the degree of “stretch” required. Continued page 29

Looking into equine gut health By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Dip. Nut. Equine nutritional therapist and medical herbalist

The complex Equine Digestive System New genomic techniques have allowed further study of the equine gut microbiome. Just as it is in the human body, it is vital for healthy digestive to have the right bacteria in the gut, this keeps the immune system strong and helps to fight infections. But not all bacteria are good for our horses. There are a number of harmful or pathogenic bacteria that can cause infection or produce toxic substances which may contribute to inflammation. The good bacteria are principally found in two families called Lactobacillus and Bifodobacteria, generally speaking these good bacteria keep the bad bacteria under control. What your horse consumes and how often can have a big affect on the balance of bacteria inside your horses gut and consequently effects the horse’s overall health. Adding probiotics to your horse’s diet has been proven to have a number of positive health benefits. Some of the benefits of probiotics are improvement of digestion, production of vit-

amin C, regulating hormones, boosting immune function, increasing resistance to infections and assisting with diarrhoea and gut irritations. Probiotics can also be beneficial for those horses that have a history of digestive problems which can include colic and ulcers. In animal studies, probiotics have been shown to help reduce the symptoms of stress in particular when animals are being transported. Prebiotics are another way to boost the healthy gut bacteria by actually eating the foods that feed them. The best foods for health promoting bacteria are called F0S or fructo oligosaccharides, these are also known as Prebiotics. Some food that is high in FOS is barley, garlic, soya beans and wheat. But there are many other ways of providing Prebiotics to your horses. Prebiotics containing Lactobacillus thermophilus and L. Bulgaricus is an excellent way to promote healthy intestinal flora. www.hiform.com.au

What is the equine microbiome? The microbiome is the collection of all of the genes in all of the microbes in and on our horse’s body’s. A microbe is a microscopic life form which includes bacteria, fungi, protists, viruses and mites and also includes archaea. The microbiota is collection or community of microbes, the full collection of genes of all the microbes in a community. In the human body genes in our micro biome outnumber the genes in our genome by about 100 to 1. Microbiologists have confirmed that there are approximately 10 times as many bacterial cells as human cells in the human body; it is likely that horses are very similar. The horse’s micro biome is extremely important for maintaining overall health. Horses and microbes depend on each other for survival. Some microbes can cause disease but most are harmless and in fact can be helpful. There are infectious agents all around our horses at any given time, whether or not they succumb to these agents is determined not just by exposure to them but also the horse’s balance of bacteria. This is because beneficial bacteria both consume these nutrients that would otherwise feed what we call the bad guys, but they also block receptor sites that harmful bacteria have the ability to latch onto Probiotics can be used to protect our horses because they produce substances such as lactic acid and hydrogen peroxide, and these can stop harmful bacteria from growing. Probiotics are often referred to as nature’s antibiotics, they tend to keep the less desirable residents such as E Coli or enterobacteria out of harm’s reach. They also make it very difficult for bugs such as Straphylococci, Salmonella and Campylobacter to cause harm. Probiotic protection is an extremely important part of our horse’s immunity.

Prebiotics and supporting nutrients from page 22

However, the best way is to supplement other specific strains of bacteria that can easily colonise the digestive tract. Probiotic supplements are made by culturing bacteria then freeze drying them. If the probiotics are produced correctly they remain stable for many months if not years and they do not need to be kept in the fridge contrary to general belief. As soon as your horse has contact with these probiotics the moisture from the horse’s saliva brings them back to life. Digestion of feed is largely achieved by microbial fermentation in the hindgut, the caecum and colon allows an environment that promotes digestion and absorption of nutrients. This generally comes from feeding fibrous products such as hays. If there is a disruption in the microbe balance due to perhaps a mismanagement of feeding or illness this can have a detrimental effect on the horse’s health. There is no doubt that using probiotics and Prebiotics can really assist the horse’s digestive system to function efficiently. Prebiotics can stimulate hindgut microflora activity and growth. It is very clear that using a good probiotic and prebiotic supplement which also contains other gut soothing nutrients can definitely assist horses by supporting the immune system and overall health and well-being. Continual use of Pro-and Prebiotics has been proven to be very beneficial, however intermittent use appears to be not as effective. Synbiotic’s are a combination formula of probiotics and Prebiotics and other supporting nutrients. I highly recommend the use of a formula such as this on a daily basis; the BioEquus is

a highly effective, stable, low dose formula and allows preventative measures to be put into place. It also allows horse owners a way to manage digestive health by also providing horses with a well balanced high roughage diet. The Horse Report

Improving driving skills in Australia The Australian Equine and Livestock Events Centre in Tamworth was home to Australia’s first CAI 2 * event in October. The event was sponsored by EA NSW in conjuction with the NW Showjumping Club and including a three day clinic with Boyd Exell OAM, Australia’s six time World indoor champion, four in hand driving and the only Australian to win a gold medal at World Equestrian Games. He is now based in Holland. Many drivers came from Victoria, SA, Queensland and NSW to take advantage of the master reinsman’s talents. Local drivers also took advantage of the opportunity to improve their skills and learn how to have a happy horse when driving. The local Horse Driving Trials Club Inc, which has members from Tamworth to the Gold Coast, also hosted a two day FEI clinic, for judges and technical delegates. This course was well attended and brought world standards to Australian officials. Dressage judges from Grafton, Jenny Edwards and Wendy Bruzweski, who have supported the HDT Club for many years, took time out to come to the clinic . The FEI officials, from Belgium, were very impressed with the standard of judging and techniques. The competition started on Friday with the trot up, before the veterinarian and ground jury. This was to make sure horses were fit for the event. FEI welfare of the horse has always been of the highest importance. Saturday’s competition of Dressage was a wonderful event to watch with the beautifully turned out competitors putting their horses through the designated patterns, showing their steps and flexibility on command. Saturday afternoon became very hot which was a trail for the European visitors who handled it very well while the more seasoned Australians found it exhausting. The testing course made for a few eliminations and a lot of time faults but the local drivers took the honours in nearly every class. Sunday’s exciting marathon saw competitors spread over the cross country course at AELEC with seven obstacles to complete and as fast as they could remember in the correct order of gates, keeping volunteer stewards busy at check points as horses and ponies traversed the grounds. The event will be held at the same time next year, so please follow the Facebook and webpage www.horsedrivingtrials.com.au for all news, photos and training days.

The Horse Report

HSD is equine version of human tennis elbow From page 18 The second component of the forces in action during movement is more difficult to explain and understand, but is probably the major component of the causes of the syndrome. The mechanics of movement and load bearing on the horse’s limb create an axial rotational line of force as the horse travels forward over the limb during stance. To attempt to explain, each limb is a relatively thin pillar, bearing all the massive load of the body mass as it passes over the limb. This pillar, is not centred directly under the centre of gravity, but is offset to the outside. That means that the force moves forward, and “around” the pillar back in towards the centre of gravity. This force is applied all the way up the leg, but the whole mass of weight, is supported by a very small foundation in the form of the hoof. If the hoof/ground contact is unstable, as in rough or soft ground, creating an unsteady or “wobbly” load bearing surface, it creates “unusual” forces of the attachments and tearing is likely to occur. These forces are very real, and enormous, and this is where the problem in trying to treat high suspensory primarily occurs because while ever the horse is moving, the same pressures are going to be applied to the damaged area, and re-tearing will continually occur. I am sorry to be somewhat “obscure” in explaining the concepts, but if there is going to be any chance of fixing, or managing the problem, it is essential to have a proper understanding of how the problem occurs, because if exactly the same factors continue to be applied, the damage is going to

continually occur. Remember, Einstein’s definition, “Insanity is continually doing the same thing, and expecting a different outcome!” An excellent analogy for High Suspensory disease in the horse is to compare it to “Tennis Elbow” in humans. This also is and “insertional desmopathy”, and is caused by the rotational forces that are applied to the upper outside forearm while swinging a tennis racquet, (also many other activities a swell), and anyone who has suffered tennis elbow knows how difficult it can be to cure. I have spent a lot of time discussing the nature of, and the causes of, this relatively common and very frustrating lameness in the horse. I believe we have been able to obtain reasonable results dealing with the problem, but hopefully that is because firstly, we understand the causes, and then direct our treatment along two pathways. Primarily, we have to get the damaged tissues to heal, and then, most importantly, analyse the situation around the horse, and attempt to change the way the horse goes to reduce, or minimise, the forces. Both these steps require a lot of input and commitment, which obviously implies, incurs an expense. To help justify putting out this money, it is critical that we have a precise diagnosis and this is not easy because the horse most commonly does not display any obvious signs or symptoms. In the next issue of The Horse Report, I will deal with how we go about diagnosing High Suspensory Disease, and then how we go about treating and managing the problem.

The Horse Report

Its important to know your goals By Tanja Kraus There are thousands of horse riding instructors, trainers, clinicians and practitioners that we can learn from. Different programs, philosophies and core beliefs when it comes to 'training' or working with you and your horse. We choose who we train with for different reasons - location, Personality, Cost, Results - understandable, but there are plenty of world champion trainers i wouldn't let within cooee of my horses. but probably not what I would call a 'good' reason. And finally, philosophy - a 'good' reason. Now, this is a personal thing. Personal, as in the only person who can make this choice is you. Those world champion trainers that I wouldn't let near my horses - plenty of people use them, because their ideologies match up. Plenty of people agree with the methods used, and thats ok, for them. I like to say that I don't have 'a program', what I have is 'a philosophy' which I try to share with people. Of course I have a series of ground skills, liberty skills, ridden skills, that I take the horses and people through, however I have adjustability in these skills. I feel that if I am teaching 'a program' that it may be easier for the people to learn - do *this and *this will happen' but I don't think that it makes it easier on the horses. Quite the opposite, I think it can cause distress for the horse. Let me give a brief example - if you chase any horse around a round yard it will eventually 'face up' to you. Some in 5 minutes, some in 2 hours. Yes it will happen,

Learn to read read your horses body language

guaranteed. What I see is a lot of horses that don't need to be chased for 2 hours, what they need is a different approach. They need the human to read their body language, and make decisions on what they need to do to go on. *Taking a side to note - I am not saying don't use a round yard, I am not saying not to do this - I do it and I teach it, what Im saying is go deeper than "keep chasing the horse until he looks at you". Back to the point of the article - what is your philosophy ? What is it that you actually want to achieve with your horse ? And more importantly how do you want to achieve it ? My philosophy is to 'Put the Horse First'. Whenever I am teaching, training or practicing, I try to empathise with the horse, read what is happening for the horse, and use skills that are going to help the horse under-

stand, in the shortest amount of time, and with the least distress for the horse. That is going to align with some peoples core beliefs. Others may not have the same belief, for various reasons. Sometimes we get lost. Sometimes we start out with a clear view of what journey we are wanting to take with our horses, and then sometimes, somewhere along the way, we find our view has gone cloudy. We may find ourselves doing things that didn't form part of the original vision, we may find ourselves allowing a trainer or coach do things to our horse that we don't agree with, that don't align with our core belief, and all of a sudden we take a step back, look at where we are and think 'how did I get here?' Of course we are always evolving, and often for the better. Sometimes we may look back to where we started and think 'thank goodness I changed my philosophy'. I know I do. I look back to my late teens and early twenties and I am ashamed at some of the things I did to my horses, in the name of competition or training. Goodness I can look back 6 months and think I have changed things for the better of the horse, because this is what I am looking to do. But sometimes it works the other way, we decide on a path that aligns with our core beliefs and then find ourselves 12 months or 2 years later doing things we would not have done. This is why it is important to know - what is my philosophy ? What am I wanting from my horse - not what my peers want

Sunshine Coast RDA looking to hire out new facility The Sunshine Coast Riding for the Disabled (RDA) Inc, located at 2 Monak Rd, North Arm, mid way between Yandina and Eumundi in Queensland is a not-for-profit organisation providing equine-based therapeutic and recreational riding and driving programs for all members of the disability community. They have a dedicated team of volunteers who assist with these programs to allow the participants to enjoy their activities in a safe and controlled manner. Along with the volunteers, they also have a team of hard-working horses who are specially selected and trained to allow the participants to enjoy and develop their skills in a safe environment. They are an independent RDA centre, affiliated with HETI (Horses in Education and Therapy International), previously known as FRDI, Equestrian Australia (EA) and Equestrian Queensland (EQ), But are not affiliated with RDAQ or RDAA. In February 2012, they pur-

chased 24 acres at North Arm. The land was vacant and has given them a blank canvas to design and develop a Centre of Excellence for riders with a disability and for the Sunshine Coast community. In late 2013, thanks to support from the Sunshine Coast Regional Council and the Queensland Government (GCCBF), they were able to commence the earthworks shaping and drainage as well as the base for the arenas which was completed in February 2014 in readiness for the next phase of the overall plan. Later in 2014, work on the new outdoor arena commenced. The Diamond Grid base has been laid and the small gravel in-fill had been spread, which will

allow for exceptional drainage. The sand was next to go on and treated logs were put in place to contain the sand. A huge thank you must go to the Buderim Foundation Inc. who has awarded a grant for the purchase of permanent arena fencing around the outdoor arena In November 2014, a cheque for $100,000 was received from Steve Dickson, MP, Minister for National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing as part of a successful "Get in the Game Get Playing" grant application.

This was the last of the funding needed for the commencement of the covered roof over the future indoor arena. In February this year, the fencing was completed around the outdoor arena thanks to a very dedicated and hard working team of volunteers and in March the construction of the covered roof over the indoor arena had begun. The completion of the new Shade Roof Structure was celebrated in May during National Volunteers Week, with a "roof wetting" Ceremony. So with all of these wonderful facilities available and a mortgage to pay off, the centre is offering their facilities out for hire.
