The Horse Report

Celebrating a 100th edition milestone In July 2000, a business colleague of ours said to us one day “Is there any money in horses?” - a question most horse will already know the answer to hell yeah! Horse people often spend more money on their horses then they do them selves. Their horses will always have new shoes, the best food, regular visits to the dentist, get regular massages and chiropractic treatments while the owner eats two minute noodles, has holes in their shoes, a sore neck and back and can’t remember the last time they went to the dentist. So capitalising on Bob’s background in journalism and my experience and knowledge of horses and a plenty of advise on how to produce a magazine, the first edition of The Horse Report was ‘born’. The first edition was 16 pages, half of which were black and white and distributed through saddleries and produce stores from Grafton to the Sunshine Coast. From day one, we have received great support from the equestrian community and businesses with a lot of those initial adver-

tisers still advertising with the magazine today. It is this support from all those in the equestrian community which has allowed The Horse Report to reach this milestone in what is a highly competitive market. Over the years, The Horse Report has tried to provide useful and interesting information. The magazine has come a long way since then with an online version also now available meaning there is an issue out 12 months of the year. We would like to thank all those who have and continue to support us, who offer advice and guidance and the many contributors to The Horse Report and we look forward to continuing to deliver a standard which has made this such a popular free magazine. The Horse Report

Looking straight into the horse’s mouth By SAMANTHA GUNTER, AEDP The equine dentistry industry is yet to be completely understood by most horse owners. The horse dentist is yet another cost of owning a horse and many owners bear the cost and responsibly get their horse’s teeth seen to every few years when they remember. For this reason, education is a very important part of my work. Without the education of owners, horses suffer not due to cruelty or indifference, but due to ignorance. The teeth of the horse are out of sight, and, understandably, often out of mind. Compared with hooves, which are obvious when overdue, teeth can often be in disastrous condition by the time a horse demonstrates any symptoms. Common symptoms often touted as an indication that the dentist is due include: dropping feed; shaking of the head under saddle; colic or choke; discomfit with the bit; unwillingness to bend or come round under saddle; and slow eating or loss of appetite. When your horse is demonstrating these signs, unfortunately, they have likely been living with pain for many months. The weight loss or behavioural issues have been slowly developing over the past few months and your horse has been slowly losing their patience to live and work with what is basically (excuse my dramatization) a mouth full of razor blades. By the time a dentist sees a horse even six months late for a dental appointment, depending on age, the horse will have been living with large cheek lacerations caused by exceedingly sharp teeth. Two main reasons exist for this article. The first and most important is animal welfare. The vast majority of clients love their horses to bits and are disgusted when I describe the state of some of the mouths I see. However, life gets in the way and a year later when their horse is due, he or she isn’t demonstrating any pain or weight loss and the dentist once again slips the owner’s mind. And so, the pattern continues and the horse suffers. The second reason is to make the dental experience of the horse exponentially more pleasant. Working in the mouth of a horse experiencing dental-related pain is a more traumatic experience for the horse. If a horse is regularly seen by a dentist (ranging from every six months to once a year), the amount of trauma that has occurred in the mouth from overgrown teeth is significantly less, equaling less pain and a better experience for the horse. To help encourage owners to get their horses seen when they are ‘due’, my policy is to offer a cheaper rate to clients who book their horses in when the reminder message is sent. The horse’s mouth is kept under control meaning less pain for the horse and fewer problems for the owner. This article is not supposed to serve as an analytical explanation of the happenings in a horse’s mouth, however, for the sake of comprehension, I will now expound on some basic dental facts. Firstly, the horse’s mouth is badly designed for longevity. The natural unequal width of the horse’s jaws is

Page 10

horse’s cheeks (upper teeth) and tongue (lower teeth). This will occur regardless of if a horse is a wild brumby or a pristine show horse. Inevitably the question ‘why don’t brumbies need their teeth done?’ has popped into your mind. Firstly, a wild horse’s lifespan is between 7-15 years of age and by this age they have more than likely died from dental related issues including colic, choke or weight and condition loss due to being unable to eat. The average lifespan of a domesticated horse is 25-30 years. This is almost definitely due to dental maintenance. Secondly, domesticated horses have been overbred, which has had detrimental effects on their dental health. When looking especially at horses bred for a purpose other than health, especially thoroughbreds (bred for speed), Arabians (bred for looks) and miniature horses (bred for size), teeth are constantly an issue due to overcrowding in the mouth and genetic problems carried through to offspring. Horses that have been bred to be tough and healthy, such as Quarterhorses, or any large horse breeds (Heavy Horses) usually have much better mouths. Continued page 11 Equine dental examinations should be done on a regular basis. called anisognathia and it is the main reason your horse gets sharp teeth. Without trying to throw too many scientific words at you at once, another key term necessary is Hypsodont, referring to the type of teeth a horse possesses. Hypsodont teeth mean that the teeth constantly erupt throughout a horse’s life to counteract the hard grinding pressures the teeth have to endure in order to sufficiently grind hard fibred feed. Humans, on the other hand, have brachyodont teeth, meaning they do not erupt overtime and what you see in your mouth is what you get. If we had to survive on hard fibers, as horses do, our teeth would shortly be worn down to the gum line. So what this all boils down to is that a horse grinds its feed, moving its jaw from side to side to work hard fibred feed, such as hay, into a digestible matter, and its teeth erupt to counterThe edges of your horse’s teeth form sharp act this erosion. points so sharp they can lacerate the As a horse grinds feed, its teeth are also ground cheeks. down. The anatomy of the Samantha Gunter Equine Dentistr y horse counters this by Caring, Reliable, and Comprehensive Treatment slowly having its teeth erupt to maintain crown height. However, the inner edges of the lower teeth and the outer edges of the upper teeth do not get ground down during this process, but they still erupt at the same rate. Therefore, these edges form sharp points and they can in time become www.sgequinedentistry.com.au so large and so needle 0415 169 469 sharp as to lacerate the

Teeth are the key to good health and well-being From page 10 Thirdly, and finally, the diet of a domesticated horse is so far removed from that of a wild horse that the natural use of the horse’s jaw and teeth is not necessary. The feeding of hard feed and easily masticated and digested feeds greatly reduces the amount a horse has to use its jaw and teeth. The teeth grind less but they erupt just as quickly- meaning that domestic horses, especially those on short pasture and mainly fed short cut feed, often need their teeth seen to more regularly. By feeding your domestic horse as much roughage as possible through constant access to hay and wild grasses, you can help recreate how they would naturally live in the wild and help them use their dental anatomy as they should, resulting in much healthier teeth. This article was merely an introduction to the basic information necessary for owners to understand the magnitude of missing or postponing a dental visit. Remember that your horse’s teeth, while not as obvious as overgrown

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: My name is Samantha Gunter and I am an AEDP Qualified equine dentist. I am passionate about not only the quality of job that I do, but also educating the public. In an unregulated industry such as this one, any cowboy with a rasp can claim to be a dentist. The only way (with the exception of regulating the industry via legislation) to determine who is and isn’t a quality dentist is by educating the horse industry. Teeth are inside the mouth and therefore if someone with a charming smile and confident demeanor tells you your horse’s teeth have been properly treated, then who are you to question them? However, the more you know, the more questions you can ask and conversations you can have and hopefully determine the quality of your dentist. Having studied creative writing and law at university, I believe I have the ability to improve this industry through education and hope that articles such as this can reach somebody and ensure a consistent level of skill in my industry.

HOW CAN YOU TELL IF YOUR HORSE NEEDS THE DENTIST? Horses are incredibly stoic animals. They will put up with an immense amount of pain before displaying even the slightest discomfort. For this reason, the symptoms I am going to outline in this short post are really the outcome of months of pain and discomfort, so even if your horse demonstrates none of these but you know the dentist hasn’t been out for a long while, or you’ve recently acquired a new horse, I recommend you have your dentist out. Many dentists will be more than happy to fit your horse in for a check up as conveniently as possible and you can know for sure that your horse isn’t living with a mouth full of lacerations and sharp points. Common Symptoms in paddock: - Dropping feed. - Hay cigars (poorly masticated hay being dropped from mouth as unable to be swallowed). - Blood in saliva (from lacerations in mouth). - Washing mouth out with water. - Slowly eating or losing appetite. - Colic. - Choke. - Awful smell from mouth or nostrils. - Nasal discharge from one nostril (usually smelly). - Unwilling to eat carrots and apples. Common Symptoms under saddle: - Shaking head. - Unwilling to take the bit. - Unwilling to turn or flex one way in particular. - Unwilling to ‘come round’ or take the contact. - Chewing on the bit. - Hard mouth. - Reactive response to contact (indicating unusual pain). - Excess salvia or frothing. - Frothing tinged with pink (indicating blood from the mouth). Image depicts sharp enamel points and credit for Texas Equine Dentist.com. From the picture it is possible to tell why a horse might not want to flex or turn one particular way or drops feed because every jaw movement digs further into their cheek - Samantha Gunter www.thehorsereport.com www.thehorsereport.com - Ph 07 55909721 - mob 0413 733 294 - Email: cobakibob@bigpond.com

They certainly do occur and if it is really a proper infection and endometritis, (infection of the uterus), then the prognosis and outlook is indeed poor. uterus that predisposes the tissues to recurring infections and these are often irreversible. More often than not, mares can develop some post service inflammation and irritation in the uterus that is transient and if correctly managed, will settle down and allow the mare to breed on. Most of the infertility in mares is caused by husbandry and management practices imposed by humans that take away the natural freedom horses have in the wild to control their own times and situations of breeding. We dictate when the mare and stallion breed and control the nutrition and agistment conditions that the horses are kept under and end up creating a lot of the problems that occur. The skill of the stud master managing the breeding is by the far the most important element in obtaining high conception rates in any program. The mare has a twenty one day breeding cycle where most are in season for five days and out for sixteen. The mare actually ovulates close to the end of the five days in season and in most cases, will only accept the stallion in the immediate period close to ovulation. Simplistically, in a nutshell, nature dictates that a mare should only be bred once or twice during her heat cycle and at a time that is most likely to coincide with ovulation. Our husbandry practices markedly change this. Repeated breeding of mares, particularly at times when the reality is that

There is nothing more frustrating and disappointing than to have gone through all the soul searching, research, planning and decision making involved when deciding to breed your mare to a carefully selected stallion and end up with the mare not in foal at the end of the breeding season. Obviously there can be many factors contributing to the failure and each individual situation is different but when an owner is in that position, they all want to know WHY? The reality is that a simple application of the commonly used management catch cries of the 6 P’s, (Proper Preparation and Planning Prevents Poor Performance). I will come back to this later, but firstly we need to understand something about reproduction husbandry in mares. I have said that each situation is different and more often than not the owner is told “the mare has an infection” and that is why she did not go in foal.

they have little chance of going in foal, is by far the major contributing factor to infertility. The most dominant instinct in nature is survival of the individual. Any issue that causes a set back to the general well being and health of the individual mare is going to adversely affect the reproductive cycle as the natural instinct for survival will dictate that it is unwise for an individual to commit to conception and the excessive demands of gestation if environmental conditions are such that individual herself may be struggling to survive. The mare’s cycle is often interrupted, prolonged, or irregular and she may not be ovulating when she should. Any factor causing a downturn in the nutrition of the mare is likely to shut down the cycle. Sending an individual mare to a breeding farm where she is suddenly put into a herd of other horses that have to compete for feed will invariably cause weight loss and set back until she has been able to adapt. Attempting to breed this mare at this time can be the first step towards infertility. Similarly, nature has set the mare up so that her most fertile time of the year is when she is likely to conceive at a time that will result in the foal being born at a time when environmental conditions are such that the weather is warm and feed is likely to be plentiful. Hence the most fertile time of the year for mares is December – January so that eleven months later when the foal is born will coincide with the warmer wetter periods. Attempting to breed the mare early in the season, August – September, is at a time when the estrus cycle is likely to be prolonged or irregular and ovulation unlikely to occur. These are examples of the sorts of pressures we place on our horses that go against the natural circumstance. Each time a mare is covered, be it naturally or by insemination, a cycle of inflammation is set up in the uterus that eventually can create unhealthy and less favorable environmental conditions in the uterus that are not conducive to the implantation and nurturing of an embryo. continued page 15

The Horse Report

Proper preperation is key to breeding From page 14

Once a mare is covered, and ovulation occurs, fertilization of the egg by the sperm occurs in the oviduct of the mare. The fertilized egg lives in the oviduct for about five days before it moves down into the uterus to begin the process of implantation. This period of grace is nature’s way of allowing the inflammatory flare that occurs in the uterus to settle down and clear so that conditions are favorable for the embryo. Repeated servicing of the mare perpetuates a cycle of inflammation in the uterus that results in failure of proper settling down and paves the way for infection. What I have discussed above is certainly simplistic. It is an attempt to convey to the reader some of the circumstances that lead to infertility. Obviously many other factors occur in the real world. The first major factor that a lot of people fail to consider is the stallion. He certainly can contribute to failure. Again, many factors can affect the concentration and viability of the sperm. Do not forget to consider the stallion. Some mares have anatomical and structural problems, particularly those who have had several foals. Damage from previous foalings to the uterus, cervix, vagina and vulva can all contribute. Similarly, some mares have poor vulval tone and conformation leading to a condition known a pneumovagina or “windsucking” where air is aspirated into the vagina and uterus setting up an inflammatory cycle. The older the mare becomes, and particular-

Select a mare that will in all likelihood have a high chance of going in foal ly the more foals she has had, the more likely the general health and viability of the reproduction system will be compromised. The list of potential problems goes on and on. Sufficient to say that most of these problems will be detected by a veterinary inspection of the mare prior to the breeding season. Each mare has a different potential or likelihood of being categorized as being possibly a difficult breeder. Discussion of these factors, plus assessment of the current management and husbandry plus the possible likely conditions where the mare is to be bred all form the basis of formulation of the best breeding plan to best enhance the chances of settling the mare So returning to the P’s. Proper preparation of your mare before attempting to breed is the single most useful thing you can do to enhance your chances. She must be in good

health, relaxed and free of stress, in good body condition and on a nutritious diet. Select a mare that will in all likelihood have a high chance of going in foal. Avoid old mares or mares that have a history of failing to go in foal. Make sure that the mare’s reproductive tract is normal. A pre breeding inspection should check that the mare has a normal functioning reproductive system with no anatomical, conformational, or structural damage. Be particularly careful in selecting the breeding farm where you are going to cover your mare. They must have good facilities, feed, and a proven record of high conception rates. In particular, it is critical to limit the actual number of times your mare is covered. In this day and age, artificial insemination with chilled or fresh semen is easily the best way to cover your mare, (mainly because the service is timed to be close to ovulation). Avoid frozen semen if you are looking for easy pregnancies. Probably the most useful thing you can do is to monitor the mares cycling pattern. This is often not so easy for single mare owners, but most owners, with careful observation, will notice subtle changes in the mare co-incident with stages of the cycle. If you can determine the pattern of her cycles, then you can reliably predict when she is most likely to ovulate and so plan your timing for cover. Do not be afraid to seek proper professional advice as the small investment that results in a properly prepared management plan will more than repay itself.

Weather creates unique health problems for horses By ANGELA DAVISON The Horse Herbalist The weird weather much of Australia has experienced over the past winter and Spring has caused a huge flush of clover and other grasses in many paddocks. While convention dictates that we should celebrate 'living in clover', in reality we are being contacted about a lot of horses with laminitis or founder (many for the first time) or gross temperament changes (going loopy!) due to the sudden richness and high sugar content of the pasture. It is easy to overlook the onset of a laminitis attack which may initially present as slight lameness in one hoof with no apparent cause, so: - Check your horses daily for any sign of lameness, heat or digital pulse. - Is the horse looking anxious? - If laminitis suspected, remove from pasture - Get affected hooves into running water, dam, river or ice boots immediately (this will negate any damage to the hoof structure) - Dose horse with What a Shock! to reduce stress & fear - Seek advice of vet or practitioner. - Feed only hay (must be soaked overnight) The liver is the primary metabolic clearing house for four specific nutrients including fructose. It's good practice to give a three week course of Liver and Spleen in spring to boost liver function. The body doesn't know

when it has had too much sugar in any form (fructose, sucrose, molasses) and if the liver is not in good order ill effects from excess consumption can easily present. Adding mucilaginous supplements to the daily diet (like slippery elm powder, linseed or psyllium) can minimise these sugar spikes. They help to reduce the risk of horses becoming insulin resistant, glucose intolerant or suffering from metabolic syndrome. Hoof Abscesses This is another common cry for help at the moment - especially with all the wet weather some states and areas have been experiencing. Always keep homeopathic Hep Sulph

30 in the first aid box so you can start dosing as soon as you suspect your horse may be brewing an abscess. Hep Sulph 30 resolves the issue quickly, particularly when used in conjunction with poulticing. You can also use Bug Buster to fight the infection. Healthy immune function can counter allergies By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Equine Nutritional Therapist, Medical Herbalist and Product Formulator ©2016

There are numerous different causes for allergic reactions in horses which can cause a variety of affects including skin irritations.

effect that it has on the horse's body. These are natural compounds and have been shown to have an excellent effect on supporting immune function. Many plants produce flavonoids, carotenoids, polyphenolics and anthocyanins all on their own to protect them from oxidative damage. Flavonoids are one of the biggest class of antioxidants and researchers have identified approximately 5000 flavonoids in various foods. Polyphenols are a smaller class of antioxidants which many scientists often referred to

as phenols. Terms such as phytonutrient and phytochemicals are a more generic term that are often used by researchers to describe nutrients an antioxidant chemicals in plants. Antioxidants are generally found in brightly coloured fruits, berries, grapes, citrus fruits and green leafy vegetables and plants. Other antioxidants that are very effective are vitamin E, vitamin C, beta carotene and selenium they all have extremely positive effects on free radicals and the damage that they cause. Continued page 19

www.hiform.com.au

Allergies of various types are an abnormal response to a weakened immune system, in these cases what may be quite harmless in normal circumstances may then become a problem. Allergens such as pollen and reactions to insect bites or certain types of feed can become a problem. Just about anything can trigger an allergic reaction in horses, these reactions can range from quite mild to serious. When an allergic reaction occurs it can contribute to chronic inflammatory responses throughout the whole body of the horse. Allergic reactions can include respiratory problems, skin irritations itchy and swollen eyes, coughing, diarrhoea, hives and irritations to the nose, mouth and skin, not to mention impacting on a horse’s digestive health. Other types of allergic reactions that occur can be due to insect bites which may include spiders. Spiders quite commonly involved can be the white tailed spider which can cause major skin irritations. These spiders tend to hide in dark quiet places such as horse rugs hanging on gates or post and rail fencing. It is highly recommended to ensure that rugs are not left out but it kept in a cupboard away from these types of spiders. Some horses can react to other insect bites such as mosquitoes. But most importantly if you support the immune system then you reduce the risk of horses having an allergic reaction. Phytonutrients are a reasonably new way of controlling inflammation and the negative

Antioxidants play a key role in horse health  From page 18

Antioxidants have a major impact on free radicals. Oxidation is a very natural process that happens during normal cellular functions. Just by breathing, exercising and breaking down food the horse's body creates free radicals. Whilst the body metabolises oxygen very efficiently approximately 1 or 2% of the body cells are damaged in the process and their molecules turn into free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules, with unpaired electrons. The main problem with free radicals is that they often injure the cell, damaging the DNA which creates the seed for disease. Antioxidants actually donate an extra electron to the free radical which neutralises it. Once it is neutralised, the reactive free radical chain ends which prevents cell damage. This reduces the risk of degenerative diseases. It is important to find a balance between the exposure to harmful free radicals and the right balance and intake of protective antioxidants. Providing the horse’s body with sufficient antioxidants and supporting the immune system is really important for overall health and well-being in any situation. A good well-balanced formula can be used on a daily basis to support immune function and prevent the risk of allergy based conditions. There are a number of highly effective antioxidants in the form of herb extracts and plant materials. Some of these include grape seed extract, turmeric, ginkgo biloba and Ginger Root extract. Generally speaking equine diets tend to lack fresh antioxidant compounds; it is unusual for horses to have access to fresh green pasture particularly when there is a drought and lack of feed. Horses tend to be fed dried hays and hard feeds. Many of the current premix and pellet feeds a highly processed and refined this further reduces the antioxidant capacity. By supplementing with a well-balanced antioxidant rich formula and feeding a natural balanced diet will go a long way to pro-

tecting the horse’s body from the effects of free radicals. This will also reduce the risk of inflammatory diseases and assist with the horse's immune system, respiratory function and cardiovascular health. A healthy horse and a healthy immune system will always reduce the risk of disease which includes allergies. Important note: Many of the processed feeds and pellets are low in roughage and contain many by products. One of the most important aspects of managing allergies is digestive health. Sixty percent of lymph tissue surrounds the digestive tract, horses can be exposed to foreign substances that can cause illness, so the digestive system plays a very important role in maintaining a healthy immune function. The GI tract of the horse is highly developed but also quite sensitive therefore the digestive system and the way it functions can be easily upset. Even stress can cause digestive disturbances these can include physical, mental, and environmental, drugs and poor nutritional intake.

Healthy strong digestive enzymes can help to maintain and restore the normal function of the digestive system, in doing so it can increase absorption and actually have an anti allergy effect. Using a higher dose of pro and pre-biotics can also have a huge benefit on gut bacteria, this can also reduce pathogenic bacteria and their toxins and reduce inflammation and improve digestive. Using high-quality nutritional interventions that contain powerful antioxidants and digestive support can improve the outcome for allergic reactions. I recommend the OxyDane and BioEquus to support the immune system and digestive health. I also recommend feeding a totally natural diet and one that is well balanced and suited to the individual horse. It is also possible to tailor make custom blends for specific issues. Breaking down the barriers of disability Celebrating International Day of People with Disability on December 3, (IDPwD) is a collaborative effort between schools, workplaces, businesses community groups and individuals to help break down disability barriers and celebrate abilities. Celebrating abilities is what the Sunshine Coast RDA does best. Each week riders, carriage drivers and horse lovers get together to celebrate what they can do. The horse becomes the catalyst and motivator to enhance their lives, developing social skills, improve balance and physical abilities, spatial awareness, coordination and motor skills. For many, just being around horses provides special moments, times when they are accepted and understood and can just “simply be”. On a recent thank you card to the volunteers, students and teachers wrote “Thank you, Tuesdays are fun”, “Thank you for letting me ride different horses”, “It is a real highlight for all of us”. Georgia Brown’s mum wrote “At her first riding lesson I cried my eyes out as I was terrified, but her face was glowing with excitement…….I was at a loss of what and how to try and help….but the Hippotherapy Program at RDA has seen Georgia’s physical development

.

benefit way beyond anything we had so far achieved with any traditional therapies….”

The volunteers at Sunshine Coast RDA can tell lots more

good news stories as they enjoy the horses and assist with the programs. The smiles tell the story and keep them coming back. Breanna has been riding since she was tiny. Now a teenager she has progressed to learning dressage and hopes one day to compete at Paralympic level. Riding at the RDA has given Breanna the sense of achievement and freedom. To top it off Sunshine Coast RDA is now working through all weather in their Indoor Arena, thanks to the support provided by Queensland Government’s Get Playing Places and Spaces Funding to improve facilities. This arena is available for hire and availability to hire increases during the school holiday periods while some of the RDA programs are in recess.

Olympic equestrian changes aim to increase appeal The Tokyo Olympics in 20202 will see changes to the format of Olympic and Paralympics equestrian sports aimed at making the sports more readily understandable and packaged in a more compact format. There was an overwhelming show of support at the FEI General Assembly in Tokyo for the changes across the three Olympic disciplines – Jumping, Dressage and Eventing – and Para-Equestrian Dressage at the Paralympics which will see three athletes per team. The drop score, which previously allowed for a team’s worst score to be discarded, would be removed under the new proposals with the role of the reserve combination becoming more important and will be a key element in ensuring horse welfare. Following the FEI General Assembly vote in support of the changes , the proposals now go before the IOC Executive Board for final approval in 2017. However 11 of National Federations, out of 107 represented, voted against the proposal – Albania, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Latvia, Luxembourg, Monaco, New Zealand, the Netherlands,

Romania and Switzerland. The vote on the Paralympic formats saw one National Federation - Great Britain – against the proposed changes. FEI President Ingmar De Vos said there was a need to increase the number of participating nations at the Olympic Games but remain within the existing quota of 200 competitors. “Reducing team members to three per nation was probably the only way to boost the number of flags,” he said. Some of the proposed changes include: Jumping • Teams of three horse/athlete combinations per nation, plus one reserve combination, no drop score • 20 teams (60 horse/athlete combinations) • 15 slots for nations not qualified with a team (maximum one horse/athlete combination per nation) • Individual event will now take place before Team event • Cut-off score: the exact cut-off and resulting penalty will be finalised in the Olympic Regulations • The exact penalty for any horse/athlete combination that is eliminated, or does not complete their round, will be finalised in the Olympic Regulations Dressage • Teams of three horse/athlete combina-

tions per nation, no drop score • Each directly qualified team may bring a reserve rider/horse combination, or horse only • One individual per nation not represented by a qualified team (no composite teams) • Determine Team medals solely through results of Grand Prix Special (no longer a combination of Grand Prix and Grand Prix Special scores) • Introduce new “heat system” (including “lucky losers”) for Grand Prix: 18 individuals to qualify from Grand Prix to Grand Prix Freestyle (best two from each of the 6 heats, plus the next 6 with the best overall results) • 8 top teams (24 starters) from Grand Prix to qualify for Grand Prix Special • Conduct Grand Prix Special to music Eventing • Teams of three horse/athlete combinations per nation, no drop score • One reserve combination per team will be allowed. The reserve combination is an important element of the proposal in order to preserve horse welfare. If a reserve combination is substituted, it will incur a penalty for the team. The exact penalty will be finalised in the Olympic Regulations • Maximum of two individuals per nation not represented by a team • Order of tests to remain unchanged (1st Dressage; 2nd Cross Country; 3rd Jumping Team; 4th Jumping Individual) • Olympic Eventing to take place over

three days (Dressage test reduced to one day) • Technical level of the three tests to be defined as the “Olympic level”: Dressage and Jumping 4*; Cross Country: 10minute optimum time, 45 jumping efforts, and 3* technical difficulty • Qualification of athletes/horses to be achieved on the same Cross Country technical level to ensure implementation of the recommendations of the FEI Independent Audit in Eventing • For the purpose of the Team classification only: any horse/athlete combinations not completing a test can continue to the next test if accepted as fit to compete at the relevant Horse Inspection Para-Equestrian Dressage • Teams of three horse/athlete combinations per nation, no drop score • Each directly qualified team is entitled to bring four horse/athlete combinations, of which three will have to be declared to compete on the team after the Individual Championships test, in which all four will compete as Individuals. • Maximum of two individuals per nation not represented by a team (no composite teams) • Determine Team medals solely through results of Team test (no longer a combination of Team and Individual test scores) • Top 8 per grade from the Individual test to qualify for the Freestyle test • Order of tests: Individual Championship test, Team test, Freestyle • Team test to be set to music

Effective horsemanship begins with a solid foundation Justin Colquhoun founded Elite Horsemanship out of a dream to make real and effective horsemanship available to anyone at any level in the horse industry. Justin’s story with horses began when he was little boy, he was always fascinated with being a cowboy and riding horses. This obsession soon took him to pony club and then onto starting horses under saddle. He ended up in his early 20s as a stockman and performer in the Australian Outback Spectacular, he was training horses during the day and riding in the show each night. Justin started out advancing his horsemanship training with lessons under Vivian Wearing a great teacher who taught him the basics of western performance. Justin eventually wanted to complete a proper horse training apprenticeship and learn the feel and timing required to develop a true foundation on a horse. He was lucky enough to be afforded the opportunity to live and work under world renowned horseman and clinician Ian Francis. Over a few years Justin travelled to every show he could with Ian and helped out and learnt every-

thing he could from Ian, he then spent just on a year living and training full time with Ian and learnt so much from this great man and someone he owes a lot to. Justin then left and started his own training facility. After starting and training horses for a wide range of disciplines Justin found a thirst for knowledge in the industry where by horse owners would rather learn the process not just get their horse trained. Justin found that when he was either giving lessons to clients or conducting clinics he could really contribute. This is where Elite Horsemanship was borne. Justin is currently completing horsemanship clinics all over Australia. These clinics can be tailored to the group or clubs requirements and aim to cover: •Handling and Groundwork •Flexion & Suppleness •Confidence and young horse work •Foundations of body control for all disciplines Whether working with a young horse, older horse or you’re looking to advance your horsemanship through feel and tim-

The Horse Report

Are you being empowered or enabled ? By TANJA KRAUS You could say that I am 'into' self development. I try to be conscious of improving in some way each day. And when it comes to horses, I have committed to leaving each horse that I interact with, better than he was (in mind, body or spirit) than when I arrived. I have the same philosophy when it comes to teaching people. I make the 'assumption' that people who invest in a clinic - both financially and time wise, that they have come to improve themselves, or their horses in some way. I believe that my role is to empower people and horses. If I can empower a person to be able to go home and have an improved understanding of themselves, their horse, or a skill set then I have achieved what I was meant to over that course. I recently went to Equitana and I was able to spend time at different lectures, listening to people with different fields of expertise, from body work, to motion science, trainers and coaches. I noticed that there were many students who were empowered by their coaches and I noticed a few who were enabled. What I mean by this is that some students were not only ok in not improving but they were enabled to not improve. Let me try to give you an example - I’ll use something that was an experience at one of my own clinics. I had a lady at a clinic, who had come along with her horse, she was admittedly nervous of this horse and trying to develop her confi-

Improving as a horse person is entirely up to the desire of the individual.

dence. We spent the first day doing some ground exercises and then the second day came and we were going to mount up. This lady was in the bathroom vomiting. Her anxiety and fear was so great, that she had a significant physical reaction to the preparation to get on. Now if I was to enable this lady to stay in this state, I would consider it a failure on my part. To enable her would have been to tell her it was ok for her to feel this way and I understand if she just wants to fence sit for the afternoon. She would have left my clinic no further along in her desire to build confidence than when she had come. Instead, I asked her to come into the arena with us, and stand on the mounting block, holding her horse. I said I was not going to make her get on (this would not have helped either), but I asked her to just stand next to the horse and breathe.

I asked her to let me know when she felt ok, and then the next step was for her to simply sit on the horse. I let her know I was fine for her to sit on him, and get straight back off if that’s what she needed - I told her I would rather see her do this 1000 times, than see her fence sitting. So that’s what she did. She got on, and off, and on and off. And before too long she was ok to stay on. And then she was ok to walk around. And then by the end of the clinic she was ok to try to do some of the moves that we were doing. And to continue I asked her to do the same thing at home. Every day for 100 days. Get the horse ready to ride, stand on the mounting block, and wait. Because you are either getting closer to the couch, or closer to getting on. And now she is a trail guide for a trail riding company. The truth is it wouldn't have mattered if she got on that day or not. I’m not the type of coach that makes you get on, tells you to hang on and slaps the horse on the rump. The important thing is that she felt empowered enough to take the step, and then empowered enough to do it at home. The flip side to this coin is self empowerment. Sure I helped this lady to gain confidence to get on and ride, but she wanted it too! The fact is you will either look for someone to help you improve, or look for someone to enable you - the choice is yours. So the first question is - are you being empowered ? The second question is - are you empowering yourself ?

2017 Queensland RIDING PONY Dates

What’s happening RIDING PONY YOUNG JUDGES The Queensland Riding Pony Committee is pleased to announce that a Young Judges Competition has been included in the RPSBS Program at Toowoomba Royal Show for 2017. There will be two classes; 10 – 13 years and 14 – 17 years The Young Judges program is a Riding Pony Qld Committee initiative that aims to encourage young members to look critically and without bias at ponies and horses. Having the knowledge and skills to make those critical judgments is important for all judges. The committee hopes this will create in young members a desire to become future senior judges. ‘Hands on’ experience and having fun are parts of the support program that will be offered to young members who are interested in becoming judges. The program will also be available to young members who want to learn more about what to look for when purchasing ponies or horses for themselves. The RPSBS Standards of Excellence, Show Rules and Conditions of Entry are published on the website. Assessing and comparing the ponies and horses in a class is the main job a Judge does. Managing the ring, horses and safety, the competitors, a timetable, dressing appropriately and being well-mannered at all times are all parts of judging. RPSBS QLD Committee encourages its young members to become part of the Young Judges program. Visit the website www.qldridingpony.com or like the page on Facebook.

She has judged in multiple states at HOTY and Royal show level, educated and shown ponies, galloways and hacks to Royal Show and National success, won multiple Garryowen turnouts, and has a vast list of EA National titles in riding, hack and hunter events to her credit. Along with hands on experience of showing in the UK, Margot is no stranger to the show world. Together with her partner David Quayle, they operate DQ saddlery, Lily’s stud, as well as produce a small team of show horses. In presenting at the Queensland judges seminar, she aims to bring her insight of judging show horses not only from the judges viewpoint but also from a competitors and spectators perspective. The cost is $45 per person (morning tea included) Forms can be downloaded from the Show Horse Queensland Facebook page or www.qld.equestrian.org.au
