One of the highlights of The Man From Snowy River Festival is the re-enactment of Banjo Paterson’s famous poem which gives the festival its name.
Corryong prepares for famous festival THERE is movement around Corryong for the word has passed around that The Man from Snowy River Bush Festival will be on again next month. The annual festival, held this year from March 31 to April 3, is held in Corryong, Victoria in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains, halfway between Melbourne and Sydney. It is a unique bush gathering of mountain riders, poets, artists and lovers of the Australian High Country and pioneering spirit. The festival attracts people from around Australia as well as international visitors to celebrate traditional high country and bush culture and in particular the imagery created by AB Banjo Paterson's and Australia's most famous poem, The Man from Snowy River. The Man from Snowy River Bush Festival recreates the fun and excitement of a bush gathering where both new and old friends come together to have a yarn and a beer, to enjoy traditional bush tucker and, of course, kick up their heels. The festival offers contestant sand visitors alike a unique opportunity to be part of the celebration of traditional Australian bush skills that remain an essential part of Australia's heritage. Activities range from The Man
from Snowy River Horseman's Challenge, to art and photography exhibitions, bush poetry and music, The Re Enactment of Banjo's famous poem, Aussie Bush Idol and Ute Muster are special events aimed at providing entertainment, education and a lot of fun. The re-enactment of the famous ride is one of the highlights of the festival and is an outstanding display of skill and courage. The Challenge is like no other in Australia comprising six gruelling preliminary events Snowy River Stockhandling; Harrison’s Packhorse; Clancy’s Whip Crack; Banjo’s Bareback; Jimmy Scammell Horseshoeing and the Mountain Horseman’s Cross Country. The top 10 competitors then compete in two events to decide the winner - the Paterson’s Brumby Catch and the Kosciusko Stocksaddle Buckjump. Each year prior to the festival, horse riders set out on a four day trail ride through breathtaking scenery which lent poetic inspiration to Banjo Paterson. Known as ‘Riley’s Ride’ the event is an essential element of the bush festival. There’s a street parade, a kids party, dog events and much more. This is a festival built around history and tradition and for details, visit the website at www.bushfestival.com.au

Quarter Horse racing seeks a new home Plans for a $60 million home for Quarter Horse racing in Queensland have been put on hold following a decision against approval of a site in the Mary Valley near Gympie. The Australian Quarter Horse Racing Development Pty Ltd (AQHRD) put forward plans to develop a $60 million Quarter Horse equestrian centre and sprint race track in Gympie in 2014 but after initial approvals from the Queensland Government in 2015, the local council found the site unsuitable for the bold development. “Unfortunately the consistent flooding of low-lying areas of the site we had been investigating meant it was proven unsuitable for a large commercial race track, AQHRD chairman John Hocken said. “While we are disappointed we will not be able to make the project work on the Mary Valley site, our vision to introduce Queenslanders to the exciting sport of Quarter Horse Racing remains strong. “AQHRD will now look at other options. We still aim to commence racing at Queensland’s first Quarter Horse race track in

The preferred track will have a 1200 metre straight. Of this distance, 800 metres will be racing strip and the remaining 400 metres will be a straight pull up area. The issue of safety plays a key role in providing an exceptionally long pull up straight, as in nearly every track in the USA horses are forced to negotiate a bend soon after finishing a race at optimum speed, and it is seen that this safety feature will be viewed favourably by all sectors of the industry. The majority of racing will be over distances of 400 metres or less, however it is envisaged that some racing will develop over longer distances up to 800 metres.

Trace minerals - what do they actually do? BY TIFFANY BENNETT To feed or what not to feed? This is the question many horse owners face with so many feeds and supplements on the market. How important is it to ensure your horse is getting sufficient trace minerals? Let’s look at what functions they have within the horse’s body. Calcium and Phosphorus Horses must have the correct balance of calcium and phosphorus. Most of the mineral matter in the horse’s body is made up of calcium and phosphorus with around 99% of the calcium and 80% of the phosphorus being located in their bones and teeth so it is vital in their diet. The calcium to phosphorus ratios should be around 3:1 up to a maximum of 6:1. If the phosphorus amount in the horse’s diet exceeds the amount of calcium the horse may experience, calcium absorption problems can arise which may cause serious bone and skeletal issues particularly during developmental years and whilst the horse is still growing. The serious often-irreversible condition , Big Head, may result due to calcium absorption problems or deficiencies. Iron Iron helps carry oxygen to the blood and is the trace mineral most associated with exercise. Iron deficiencies within horses can produce anaemia however, anaemia in horses is rare. Copper Copper is essential for the development and maintenance of elastic connective tissue and cartilage. A copper deficiency may be observed through general poor health or even wood chewing.
Horses are thought to need between 130 – 190 mg per day pending on their workload. Pastures or other roughage sources may provide between 50-75 mg per day depending on the quality. Horses will loose a small amount of cooper through sweat. Manganese Manganese is another important trace mineral for bone formation and horses require 350mg per day for low-level exercise and up to 500g for heavier workloads. Selenium Selenium has a number of roles in the horse’s body, one of those being it is an antioxidant. All horses require nutrients for stamina and performance, when these nutrients are broken down during exercise a process called oxidation occurs. During oxidation free radicals are produced and if they are not destroyed will cause damage to cell structures. Selenium is a part of the cellular antioxidant defence system. Selenium deficiency is related to soil content of selenium, which then has an effect on the pasture. Iodine Iodine is part of the thyroid hormone, which in the performance horse its important role is in controlling metabolism. Zinc Zinc is important in many of the enzyme systems in the horse’s body and it has a direct effect on the production of insulin, coat colour, blood clotting and wound healing. Zinc is a very important trace mineral for good hoof health. The average horse in light work will need around 400mg per day. Cobalt
An important mineral for blood and cell formation. The horse’s digestive system is able to use cobalt to produce vitamin B12. Vitamin B12, iron and copper are utilised together for the formation and maintenance of blood cells. Magnesium Magnesium plays an important role in in nerve and muscle functioning, reducing equine obesity and is even known to reduce the risk of laminitis to horses prone to it during grass growing season. Horses deficient in magnesium can display signs of nervousness, excitability hence it is known as the mineral with a calming influence on horses. A deficient horse has a greater chance of their muscles tying up. Minerals are very important for your horse’s functioning. Here are my tips on getting your mineral balance right. Always speak to your local feed store staff. Discuss with them what you are feeding and they will help you with what you need. Remember, where you live will determine what you may need If you are unsure use a free choice system with some mineral blocks and you will quickly visually see what your horse is taking and what they are deficient in. For the coastal areas of Queensland and NSW, try an Olsson’s 007 Trace Mineral block and an Olsson’s Equine Calcium Plus. One complaint I regularly hear about using salt and mineral blocks is that “the horse ate the whole thing”. If the block is not largely molasses based (horse may just gorge on molasses) you can be pretty sure you have started to sort out any mineral or salt deficiency

Trick riding enjoys a rise in popularity Trick riding is an equestrian sport where the rider performs tricks on a galloping horse. Tricks can include standing up, hanging upside down and vaulting on and off the horse. Trick riding also known as stunt riding which originated as a battle technique. The Russian Cossacks adopted these skills from the Caucasus people. These techniques meant that during battles warriors weren't just restricted to sitting astride their horse but they could also duck, dodge, move and hide from attacks from their enemies. Eventually these skilled warriors were forced to migrate to North America and their skills impressed other riders. Trick riding soon became a form of live entertainment and competition, especially at American rodeos. In Australia trick riding is becoming more popular. It is seen as mainly live entertainment and in recent years has developed an annual competition, The Australian Trick Riding Championships.
Australia trick riding is becoming very popular it is important to learn the correct and safe techniques taught by reputable trainers
Since trick riding is considered a high risk equestrian sport it is important to learn the correct and safe techniques taught by reputable trainers and to learn on experienced and well trained horses of the sport. HLS Trick Riding is a new Gold Coast equine business that teaches trick riding, using experienced trick riding horses and fully fenced arenas. HLS caters
to all age groups and rider abilities and safety is always the first priority. Owner and trainer Hollie Shiels has 27 years of experience in the equestrian industry, she has been successfully competing for 24 years in numerous disiplines and 16 years of trick riding and performing experience. Hollie began trick riding as an original member of Girls Girls
Girls and has since learnt many techniques from some of the worlds best professional trick riders. For the past 10 years, Hollie has been a professional trick rider and performer on the Gold Coast and has trained many horses and riders for the live entertainment industry. HLS Trick Riding do hourly lessons full time, they also hold barrels days, to teach positions and techniques for trick riding and vaulting (no horses) and two day clinics which include the EA sport of Vaulting with David Waller. HLS, along with David, are available to travel and can accommodate for small to large groups of riders. HLS trick riding also hold show horse prep mini clinics to learn how to present your horse for the show ring from plaiting and sewing manes to applying makeup using Judges Choice horse products. Rationalising the need for Hendra vaccination By DAVID LOVELL BVSC It is almost impossible to understand and comprehend how the situation surrounding Hendra vaccination of horses could possibly descend into the current chaos. That being said, many cynics could easily conclude that the basis for all the angst is that the wonderful Hendra vaccine that we have has not been provided for free, instead it is a user pay cost, which of course it should be. In 2011, we had an unprecedented number of cases. The industry was in turmoil. The media was overplaying and beating up hysteria over the outbreak. Events were being cancelled and the industry was demanding that “someone do something”. Well, someone did. The governments of Queensland and NSW committed funds, a private enterprise company took up the challenge, and the very complicated and difficult task of developing a vaccine commenced. Late in 2012, a vaccine was made available, albeit to only be used under special permit as all the safety trials had not been completed, but due to the urgent need for horse owners to be able to protect their horses, the normal process was fast tracked in an attempt to safeguard the community.
Equine veterinarian David Lovell believes that cost is a deterrent to horse owners getting their animals vaccinated against Hendra.

ing stake holders, an unbelievable tirade of ill informed, emotional and hysterical rubbish has dominated the social media in protest. The vaccine has proven to be extremely safe, and all ongoing trials have only further confirmed it’s efficacy. As I said above, the underlying cause of all this has been the fact that the vaccine is not free. It is a cost, but let’s get real, it is an extremely minimal cost in the overall scheme of owning a horse. Do not forget that the consequences of Hendra infection are the death of the horse and an extreme risk to the safety of the owners. Fortunately, the greater majority of caring, committed horse owners had taken up the opportunity to vaccinate and there is a very large majority of happy, healthy protected horses out there. There are still many that are not and unfortunately, many of the unvaccinated horses are the less intensively managed animals that spend most of their life out in paddocks with sometimes, minimal human contact. Also, some owners have chosen to vaccinate the perceived “important” horses, and leave the older or retired animals alone. The reality is that both of these groups would fit into the more at risk category of horses being likely to be exposed to the virus. The game has now changed forever. The Queensland Government, through their Occupational Health and Safety arm, have chosen to charge and prosecute three individual veterinary surgeons for breaches of the duty of care when dealing with positive Hendra cases. These cases are still pending and the final outcomes are not known at this point. The situation for veterinary interaction with unvaccinated horses has now become untenable. The reality is that firstly, Hendra disease is extremely rare. Secondly, it is not that easy for humans to become infected from a horse. Human exposure to a horse with
Full Service Equine Clinic It’s all about your horse
Make no mistake, efficiency trials had clearly demonstrated that the vaccine was very effective, and that it seemed to be relatively free of side effects. Because of the perceived urgency, the early restricted release was approved and we had available, a gold standard means of protecting our horses and owners. As it has become obvious, some of the more ungrateful members of the community, many of whom were the exact same group of people who were initially demanding the vaccine, seized upon the extremely minimal chance that some unknown possible side effect may occur. Instead of being grateful that finally there was a means of safeguard-
Hendra, has to be reasonably close or invasive, for the disease to transmit. In most cases, common sense and reasonable precautions would be reasonably safe. The disease is not highly contagious and needs significant exposure to bodily fluids from the horse for transmission. This is not to say that contact with a sick Hendra horse is not serious, it’s extremely serious but as long as common sense and care is exercised, transmission is not likely. Any invasive procedure, particularly with the head and mouth, is extremely dangerous, as is contact with any bodily fluids. Every veterinarian that examines a horse, will make a risk assessment and act accordingly. Certainly if a horse has progressed into a fulminating, or confirmed case of Hendra, then maximum security must be invoked. The problem is that signs and symptoms of Hendra disease are extremely variable, particularly in the earlier stages. No one can look at a horse that is displaying virtually any symptoms that would designate the horse as “sick”, cannot possibly not consider Hendra as a possibility. The law states, that if a veterinarian has any suspicion that a horse could have Hendra, then nothing can be done with this horse without maximum personal protection equipment engaged, until the possibility has been ruled out by an exclusion test. This means that the horse must be placed into strict quarantine and cannot be treated until samples have been taken from the horse, taken to the laboratory, and returned a negative test. This can mean a delay of anywhere from one to four days depending on the circumstances. What this means, is that virtually any horse that has a temperature, is off feed, is dull and depressed, shows signs of colic, respiratory or neurological disease, or in fact is in any way acting strangely, then Hendra has to be considered. Even worse is the fact that it is well established that a horse may be shedding virus, for a period of 24 – 48 hours before obvious symptoms are displayed. In this case, even apparently normal horses can pose a risk. Therefore any invasive procedure, such as dentistry, endoscopy, tubing, eye examinations and blood collection, require maximum personal protection measures.. The position is clearly stated under the heading,”General Biosecurity Obligation” in the new Queensland Biosecurity Act, which articulates the veterinarian’s position. Continued page 30

Indigenous stockmen rise to the Challenge The King of the Ranges Stockman’s Challenge and Bush Festival will be held in Murrurundi, NSW from February 25–28 this year. Over the four days of action-packed competition, some of Australia’s best stockmen and women showcase the tasks they use daily, consisting of six preliminary eventscattle handling, pack horse, bareback obstacle, whip cracking, horse shoeing and cross-country jumping to determine the top 10 scores. These finalists then try to catch and lead a wild horse and ride a buckjumper to determine the King of the Ranges It's also a great Bush Festival featuring a camp oven dinner, family bush dance, horse training, dog high jump, sulky driving, children's goat racing, billy boiling, wood chop, bar, food and trade stalls, live music, bush poetry and much more. This year will also feature Lachlie Cossor and his Outback Stockman’s Show direct from the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame and music for everyone Friday and Saturday night. Last year, the King of the Ranges organisation initiated co-sponsorship with the Lawn Hill and Riversleigh Pastoral Holding Company based in the Gulf of Carpentaria, aimed at assisting young Aboriginal stockmen to develop skills and widen their experience. . The LHRPHC is 51 percent owned by the Waayni Traditional Owners and 49 percent by MMG Century and recruits trainees from the Lower Gulf who show a strong desire to work in the pastoral industry. Gerald Aplin (age 20) and Peter Jupiter (age 19) both from Doomedgee in Queensland, have been selected by the Lawn Hill Management to spent six
weeks in the Upper Hunter NSW, with King of the Ranges committee members, Shane Easey and Warren Bramley, learning the skills required for the Stockman’s Challenge as well as participating in a range of experiences to further their all round development. Gerald was the first recipient of the program in 2015 and will be extending knowledge gained last year, bringing with him the confidence he built up during the testing competition of the Stockman’s Challenge. Peter who has worked at Lawn Hill for two years and head stockman there for the past year, will be introduced to some
of the required skills such as using a cattle dog to work stock, packing and saddling a packhorse and cutting targets with a stockwhip whilst riding at speed. Bonding with borrowed horses and dogs will be an added test but both these young men are gifted with natural ability, balance and reflexes and enjoy their work as stockmen. The Horse Report
How to increase the health of your horse By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Dip. Nut. Equine nutritional therapist and medical herbalist Increasing the health and well being of your horse, improving digestion, improving skin and coat condition, boosting the immune system and slashing your feed bill is not difficult to achieve. In this article we show you how. THE HORSE’S DIGESTIVE SYSTEM Horses grind their feed very thoroughly to a size less than 20mm so as to prepare it for digestion within the small intestine. Fermentation and the breakdown of fibre do not occur until the feed reaches the hindgut. Horses that tend to eat too quickly or ones with poor teeth will cut down the required process allowing the feed to reach the hindgut not fully digested. This can lead to digestive upsets. Horses take about 1000 jaw, mastication movements to chew 1kg of grain and about 3000 to chew hay, pretty amazing when you think about it, 1kg of grain is a reasonable amount of grain! Routine checks of your horse’s teeth is essential to maintain the condition particularly with horses that are feed hard feeds and are working reasonably hard. Sharp edges can develop on the cheek or large pre-molars and molar teeth. The horse has a bottom jaw that is not as wide as the top jaw, sharp points may develop due to the side-to-side action of the jaw, which is required to grind the feed well.
WHAT TO FEED? Feeding a diet that is designed for the species is essential; this involves feeding a natural diet. Horses have the most remarkable grinding process within the mouth able to pulverise a handful of whole oats in just seconds. They are the only species in the world that have this particular jaw action and remember that the anatomy and physiology of horses has not changed but the way we are feeding has! The onset of fast food for horses with its socalled time saving approach has only complicated the situation, not just for horses but for horse owners as well. Just as fast food in the human world has created a number of health problems, the same has occurred in the horse world.
Health concerns include obesity often leading to Laminitis, colic, digestive problems, ulcers, loss of weight temperament changes etc. It is essential for us to consume a healthy diet for our health and well being, it is no different for horses! Horses cannot make life choices where feeding is concerned as their lives are in our hands. Balancing a feed ration to suit the horse’s individual needs is not complicated but essential to achieve optimum health. This can be achieved by simple controllable feeding methods and supplements that deliver their promises! Generally speaking a natural diet including whole oats or barley, chaffs plenty of good quality hay and a supporting supplement is all that is required. For further free feeding advice please visit the feeding pages of our website www.hiform.com.au or contact us via email enq@hiform.com.au or phone 03 97756422

The Horse Report Are you ruining your relationship ? By Tanja Kraus Picture this. We head out for a weekend with our horse – might be to a show, clinic or just to spend time with our friends (four legged and two). We have a great weekend – everything with our horse just seems to click – he knows what you are asking of him, you know how he is feeling, you are both just on the same page – it is great. Then its home time, you head over to the float and he hesitates, and you start. Now you begin to pull everything out of your bag of tricks to try and get him on the float – you lunge him, out come the sticks or whips, people wanting to help come out of the woodwork, you pull, push, yell, scream, cry, you drive him in circles, drive him backwards – you name it, you try it – to what end ? I see this often, and what I see is a horse and its person, who have just spent a weekend building their relationship, learning to trust each other, learning to understand each other – and then I see it being undone in the blink of an eye. What it gets me to thinking – we spend time building the relationship with our horse – training, lessons, clinics, simply spending time with them – how much of this are we undoing in the little things ? Float loading is just one example – are we undoing our hard work in other ways ? When you think about it we probably are – and do you know when it is that we undo our work ? When we have our own agenda. When we have our own agenda – “I need to (insert your requirement here – get you on the float to go home / get your shoes put on / get you wormed / change your rugs / change your paddocks), our horsemanship and relationship seems to go out the window. We get into our ‘human got to get something done mode’ and we get singular focus – we focus on the job, and the horses needs go out the window. How do we fix it ? Step 1 is simply to recognize that it is happening, and Step 2 is to assess what we are doing with our horse, and ensure that the horsemanship is staying in what we are doing. As horseman and women it is our job to ensure that we are ‘putting the horse first’ in everything that we do.

The Horse Report
Get Rachael to the World Equestrian Games BY VANESSA JONES RACHAEL Baker has a dream. It's been a tough few years for the 40-yearold so it's a dream which has kept her from the very depths of despair, kept her afloat in a world of pain and anguish. Her dream isn't a simple one. It requires hard work, it requires help and it requires horses. Because the para-equestrian has set her sights on competing for Australia at the 2018 World Equestrian Games in Canada. Ms Baker, of Ormeau, has overcome many adversities over the past seven years to reach this point. The first was in 2008 when she came off her bicyle, hit her head and spend a week in a coma with a brain injury. She did, however, recover. Last year she was was hit by a spinal infection that nearly killed her and left her a paraplegic in a wheelchair. "I had an epidural abscess ... a big sack of pus compressing my spinal cord nerve along with two to three disc bulges that were infecting the area. I also had disc degenerative disorder disease which was breaking down my vertebrae," she said. "They had to take out my lower spine and part of my sacrum. I had septicimea and because of this, I was deliarious. As the poisins and toxins enterted my blood stream, my kidney and lungs shut down. "Mum got phone call saying to come and see me and start planning for my funeral. They believed I had no hope with how much was wrong and didn't know how successful the treatment would be." Doctors gave her a one per cent chance of surviving but after spending 23-days in a coma and numerous complications, survive she did. However, the cost has been enormous and as Ms Baker describes it she was "in a really hideous place for a long time" and contemplated suicide many times. "Initially the barrier was to be breathing on my own, then it was to get my sorry arse out of bed. Things were pretty dark there for a while," she said. Fortunately, thanks to the Transitional Rehabilitation Program and Partners in Recovery (PIR) Gold Coast’s mental health program she has maintained her equilibrium and further, re-ignited her passion and love for horses. "It hasn't been an easy road. For many years I have had to deal with a number of serious health issues including the severely traumatic brain injury from 2008 where I had complications from brain bleeds and clots. Thrown into the mix are auto-immune diseases, Lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, epilepsy, osteoarthritis and mental illness," Rachael said. Now, through the support of Partners in Recovery aiding her to secure a position at Arundel Park Riding for Disabled (RDA),
Rachael Baker has her sights set on competing in Canada in 2018 at The World Equestrian Games (W.E.G). Any help to bring this journey's destination to fruition will be most greatly appreciated
riding has given her life meaning and a purpose again. Ms Baker qualified for many stages required to compete at the 2016 Rio Paralympics and gained a Certification of Impairment, however the short timeframe and lack of financial support prevented her Paralympic journey which is why she has turned her attention to Para Equestrian Dressage at the World Equestrian Games. "It's the equestrian equivalent to the Olympics. Hence it requires dedication, training, physical stamina and, of course, funding," she said. Ms Baker is now seeking sponsorship or funding. She is required to gain points at national (and potentially international) competitions to be eligible for Montreal in 2018. This campaign comes at a significant cost because of its enormity - competing against the best in the world. "I've always ridden horses. I was a one-day eventer and now it's a thrill and a challenge to have a goal to compete at the Games. I'm alive and I shouldn't be. I've been reintroduced to horses which brought me back. It gets me out of bed every day and makes me excited about doing stuff," she said. But now even getting on a horse is problematic and requires assistance, while Ms Baker has to learn how to direct a horse using different signals as her legs are no longer as strong and her hands are now the focus. In addition, finding a skilled horse that also understands the signals is not easy. "We're on the lookout for a well-educated horse but they don't come cheap and can be between $30,000 and $40,000 to buy,” she said.
“That's just the horse, not the equipment, the saddle, the dressage coach and all the other things needed. "Being a para equestrian ... the amount of people you need to support you is ridiculous. Being in a wheelchair even going out to the paddock to collect the horses I'd likely to get stuck. "I can brush a horse for a certain amount of time but my spine and back get really sore so I need to sit down. "RDA have a specially-designed ramp and stairs so I can mount but I need someone on both sides so I don't fall off. It been awesome the amount of support I've had. "I cannot express to everyone how significant it is to be supported in my 'new life'. And my coach Renee Poulson has been great. You lose sight of your 'old self' including your independence. “I have near fatally suffered from depression, anxiety and mistreated bipolar for over half of my life, many times I've considered suicide a real option. I had no purpose to my existence. "The mere idea of this fork-in-the-road gives me hope, excitement, a challenge, both physical and mental stamina and now a genuine reason to live - to fulfil my childhood dream. "While I am brimming with passion, drive and determination, unfortunately if there's no financial means to fund my campaign, I won't get far. I am staying positive because I know I can get there." FSG Australia is assisting Rachael with her fundraising efforts. Wet week of camp brings out determined riders Riders selected to attend the 2016 Pony Club NSW State Camp brave wet weather which didn’t damped their enthusiasm for their week of instruction from the Country’s top coaches at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre at the beginning of January. The final day of riding sessions finally brought some sun, after torrential rain hit the Sydney region earlier in the week. Riders were chosen to receive coaching in the disciplines of Showjumping, Eventing, Dressage, Mounted Games and Advanced Horsemanship. While the rain did limit the cross country facilities available to camp riders, coaches took the opportunity to use the fantastic indoor arena at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre to focus primarily on Dressage, Showjumping and Mounted Games techniques. Young Dressage rider Angela Begg was full of praise towards the 2016 camp. “The instruction that I received from our dressage coach, Peter Shaw, both on and off the horses was incredible,” she said. “I have come away with a great understand-

Riders from all over NSW attended the 2016 Pony Club NSW State Camp in January at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre ing of what I need to work on with my horse and also of what correct, classical dressage looks like”. Many of the 2016 State camp officials explained that this year’s group of riders showed maturity and determination well beyond their years, and deserve to be commended on their great attitude throughout the camp. The Pony Club Association of NSW would like to thank the 2016 State Camp coaches; Peter Shaw, Sam Lyle, Jamie Coman, Jane Frankum, Sarah Venamore, Anthony Newham and Phil Logue for their efforts as wonderful coaches for our young pony club riders. Thanks also goes to the riders, officials and staff who travelled from around the state for yet another successful Pony Club NSW State Camp. The Pony Club NSW State Camp is supported by Mitavite official feed partner, Club Colours Direct and International Animal Health. Vets have to weigh up risks From page 10 It states “that a person who deals with biosecurity matter or a carrier, or carries out an activity, if the person knows or ought reasonably to know that the biosecurity matter, carrier or activity poses or is likely to pose a biosecurity risk, the person has an obligation (a general biosecurity obligation) to take all reasonable and practical measures to prevent or minimise the biosecurity risk”. This bureaucratic gobbly gook implies that any veterinarian would be a person who knows, or ought reasonably to know, there could be a risk, and therefore has an obligation to minimise the risk. The situation is untenable. The chances of any horse actually having, or be in the early stages, of Hendra disease, are extremely low, but because of this obligation, any horse displaying virtually any symptoms, must be considered a possible risk and therefore has to have an exclusion test before
relaxation of precautions. Even though the odds of any animal having Hendra are low, any vet that fails to investigate the possibility, is playing Russian roulette with workplace health and safety and prosecution if they fail in their duty of care. This then is why many veterinarians are now refusing to see any horse that is not vaccinated. It is not because they are “frightened of the disease”, or “don’t care about the animal”. It is because of the risk of prosecution, if they have not complied with very demanding requirements of personal protection equipment for themselves, their staff, and any of the people involved with the management of the animal. Veterinarians are being vilified and crucified for “not caring”. This is very unfair. All horse owners on the east coast of Australia are aware of the disease - their choice whether or not to vaccinate.
