How Equine Assisted Therapy helps with anxiety? Anxiety can be a debilitating condition that can seriously restrict life and make simple things like leaving the house or getting to work or school difficult. Having anxiety may mean that you feel angry and lash out at others, or that you feel scared or ashamed and withdraw from any social contact or support or that you turn to drugs or alcohol to try to relax and calm down. You may often feel overwhelmed and misunderstood. There are different types of anxiety, however, some general signs and symptoms of anxiety include: Feeling anxious or concerned most of the time Catastrophizing- always fearing the worst will happen Feeling overwhelmed - by sudden feelings of panic and anxiety Obsessive thinking- having recurring thoughts that make it difficult to calm down Avoiding situations - people or places that cause anxiety Physical symptoms - like a racing heart, panic attacks, tightness in the chest, fast breathing, restlessness, feeling tense and wound up. Equine Assisted Therapy provides an opportunity for you to talk to a mental health professional and be outside in nature with horses, this is one of the most effective ways to treat anxiety. You have an opportunity to talk about your

experience and feel supported in a nonjudgemental way, the mental health professional will also provide you with different tools to help deal with your anxiety. One of these tools may be to learn how to breath deep, become present and relax your energy, this is really important for your anxiety and also for your connection and safety around the horses. Horses are naturally present to their environment. They are aware of who is around them and how that person is feeling and they will respond to situations and people straight away. So if you are uptight and anx-

ious the horse will respond to that - generally by moving away from you. They aren’t rejecting you, they are just moving to a place where they feel safe and comfortable - this is a horse’s first priority. You then have the opportunity to work on ways to reduce your anxiety and build a connection with the horse. Relating with the horses and practicing reducing your anxiety around the horses helps make the techniques more effective in your everyday life. Horses are non-judgemental and curious and they provide a sense of being heard and understood.

The Horse Report

Is your pasture poisoning your horse? By MALCOLM GREEN It seems a bizarre notion that grass could be bad for horses but amazingly it is true. There are two types of pasture that may cause problems. The first is really rich ryegrass and clover. That is great for dairy cows but can cause a lot of problems for our horses. The second problem is grasses that contain a lot of calcium oxalate. In NSW and Queensland this mostly means setaria, green panic, kikuyu and buffel – all imported tropical species. The conventional wisdom is that oxalates prevent the proper absorption of calcium leading to a demineralising and enlargement of the bones that shows most prominently in the face and is often known as Big Head. This name is unfortunate because the Big Head symptom is only the extreme end game and it may not even occur in older horses. The real issues are lameness, short stepping gaits, difficult and sometimes aggressive behavior and substantial weakening of bones all over the body. For a long time the solution has been to add lots of calcium to the diet to correct the deficiency. Even then supplement and feed manufacturers only claim that recovery will occur in 9-12 months. Of course over that time frame most Australian pastures have dried out and the oxalate levels have dropped naturally. So evidence that this approach actually

While lush green pastures in Australia may keep your horses lovely and fat, their may be underlying issues created by these lovely green pastures affecting your horses wellbeing.

works is weak. When Malcolm Green of EquiFeast was invited in from the UK to look at this problem he did something that seemed completely barmy – he took away all the supplementary calcium, phosphorus and magnesium. Instead he supplied chelated calcium - a form that seems to have a positive influence on all sorts of cellular processes without actually providing calcium for use in bones and other cells. All the trial horses recovered in a few weeks. Behavior improved, lameness went away and bones normalised (except for one very old mare). Most interestingly the horses started to excrete calcium in their urine – clearly they

were not deficient. The trials included sophisticated hormone measurements that involve human hospital laboratories in Sydney and Melbourne. These also showed a normalisation of calcium metabolism. So if you have horses with shifting lameness, a difficult demeanor or a less than free flowing stride you probably need to find out more. In conjunction with Murwillumbah Pony Club, Malcolm is giving a talk in Murwillumbah on Wednesday 22nd February at The Branding Rail, Murwillumbah Showgrounds. The Horse Report

Regular dental checks can avoid problems By SAMANTHA GUNTER, AEDP Regularly, people will discuss their horse’s dental needs with me and they mention their two-year-old or three-year-old and ask when they should start to see the dentist. Like almost everything in the horse world, the sooner something starts being done correctly, the fewer problems can expected later down the track. This is especially true when it comes to your horse’s mouth. Not only can appropriate dental treatment significantly lengthen the life of your horse, but it can also save you money in feed bills, vet costs and frustrating behavioural issues. The young horse experiences a lot of dental changes before their sixth birthday. This is why if you have a young horse, your dentist will recommend they be seen every six months from the age of two years. If something starts to go wrong during these formative years, it can affect the rest of your horse’s life. Here’s an outline of what’s going on in your baby’s mouth. The first reason is that, like us, horses have baby teeth that serve them for a few years then fall out and get replaced by permanents. Nature usually takes care of this process fairly effectively- however problems can arise.

Problem 1: Deciduous teeth can be retained, forcing the permanents to come through displaced. This can cause feed to pack, infection to fester and periodontal disease to follow. Problem 2: As the deciduous teeth loosen, feed can pack underneath them, causing infection and the start of periodontal disease. A bad smell is often a good indication of this. Problem 3: Cap shedding can be painful for horses. They can stop eating, have a bad temper and can be unpredictable under saddle due to the unprecedented pain. A competent, qualified dentist can pull loose caps easily and without sedation, avoiding the above problems. The second reason young horses require more regular dental is due to the faster eruption of their teeth. As is discussed in other articles of mine, horse teeth erupt throughout their life, creating sharp points. A young horse’s teeth erupt faster than an older horse and therefore the teeth become sharper much more quickly. The third and final reason is because young horses are usually in training. They are being broken in and learning new things. Doing all of this with a painful mouth will not make the new experiences very pleasant and it isn’t really fair. While an older, more experienced horse might be able to work

with large lacerations inside their cheeks, young horses aren’t as stoic most of the time. I hope this has answered some questions in regards to your young horse! If you get on to dental problems early, it will save you money, time and frustrations in the future!

Strangles outbreak - take precautions By DAVID LOVELL BSVS

Symptoms of strangles include: Temperature, loss of appetite, swelling of the lymph nodes (glands) under the jaw, thick and yellow nasal discharge perature) and loss of appetite. The horse may have difficulty swallowing. This is followed by swelling of the lymph nodes (glands) under the jaw and in the throat and the horse may hold his head low with his nose poked forwards to relieve discomfort and to aid respiration. There is usually a thin watery nasal discharge that soon becomes thick and yellow. One or more abscesses form in the inflamed lymph nodes. These tend to rupture either to

treat horses with a course of antibiotics from the very first sign of infection, before abscesses start developing. This may prevent the disease from manifesting but may also prevent them from producing a useful immunity, so they may develop signs in a ‘second wave’. As this discussion would suggest, there is considerable controversy and debate as to the use of antibiotics in cases of strangles. Our policy at The Horse Hospital is that horses with acute strangles, particularly if they have a temperature, should be treated very aggressively with antibiotics. We believe the possible risks of not “suppressing” the disease outweigh the supposed benefits of allowing it to run its course. Yes, it may delay the resolution of the abscesses but, we believe, it also gains valuable time for the body’s own natural defense systems to gear up to fight the infection. Some cases form such large abscesses that they are in danger of suffocation, (hence the term “Strangles”), and then intensive antibiotic and anti-inflammatory treatment is essential. In extreme cases, an emergency tracheotomy tube may have to be inserted in the horse’s windpipe to maintain oxygen supply. Recommended treatments include application of hot towels to the swollen glands to encourage abscesses to burst or to grow to a size and maturity that allows them to be safely and successfully lanced. Once open, the abscess cavities should be flushed with dilute povidoneiodine solutions and allowed to heal naturally.

the outside or into the back of the throat and discharge thick yellow pus. Horses usually recover fully after natural rupture of the abscesses. You should seek veterinary help without delay. He/she will help confirm the diagnosis by clinical examination and the collection of swab samples for laboratory investigation and will help you with appropriate treatment and management. Strangles can occur in horses of any age but younger horses are more likely to become infected. The disease can really be a problem in young horses congregated together on breeding farms. After infection, most horses are immune to re-infection for several years. Old or debilitated horses are at increased risk of infection or re-infection. The bacteria that cause strangles are very susceptible to certain antibiotics including penicillin but there is considerable disagreement if or when antibiotic treatment should be given. The problem is that when abscesses form they produce a dense fibrous capsule that means that the antibiotics circulating in the bloodstream have difficulty in reaching and killing the infecting organisms. Some believe that this tends to delay resolution of the infection and there is an increased risk of infection spreading throughout the horse’s body (miliary or ‘bastard’ strangles), which is often a terminal condition. Many clinicians that have experienced strangles outbreaks prefer to let the disease take its natural course, infecting and immunizing most horses, hopefully to earliest resolution. A compromise is to take temperatures and blood samples daily from in-contact horses and to

I thought it timely that in light of the recent devastating outbreak of strangles in some Brisbane racing stables, that we review the disease. Strangles is no longer a modifiable disease in Queensland, however it is extremely contagious and as soon as word of mouth reports a property, it may as well be quarantined. The Racing and Betting Act, in order to protect the enormous racing industry, empowers Racing Queensland to impose strict quarantine on any infected premise, and this automatically shuts down the trainer’s livelihood, so the impact is enormous. The incidence of strangles, on breeding farms, has decreased significantly over recent years and a degree of complacency has set in. Strangles is an infection caused by bacteria called Streptococcus equi. It is highly contagious and the infection can be spread by horse-to-horse contact or by humans, tack, drinking troughs and other environmental factors. The characteristic signs include sudden onset of fever (high tem-

The Horse Report

Understanding the nature of strangles From page 10

It is most important to understand the highly infectious nature of this organism and to all that can be done to isolate cases and to prevent further spread to other horses, both on and off the immediate premises. Your veterinarian will help you set up a management protocol appropriate to your own location and circumstances. Vaccines against strangles are available but are not 100% effective. Prevention of the disease or its spread therefore depends upon good management. New horses should be isolated for tow to three weeks and their temperatures checked regularly. Any horse which shows suspicious signs of illness (high temperature, nasal discharge, difficulty in swallowing, swollen throat or glands) should be isolated until strangles is confirmed or ruled out by veterinary examinations and laboratory investigations. Any horse which has strangles should be immediately isolated from all other horses. It should have its own water and feed mangers, grooming kit and tack and no equipment used for the affected horse should be allowed near other horses. One person should look after the affected horse(s) and avoid contact with all other horses. All equipment, stables, fences, trailers, etc. should be thoroughly disinfected using a strong disinfectant. Once fully recovered, the affected horse can be turned out again. We believe that vaccination, although not completely effective, should still be highly recommended. The initial course of vaccinations requires three injections at two weekly intervals, thereafter, an annual booster. Horses at higher risk may be given additional boosters. This will establish some base level resistance to the disease and is well worthwhile, as once again, the consequences of allowing the disease to run rampant through a group of susceptible horses can be devastating. Unfortunately, some horses become symptomless carriers of Streptococcus equi, most commonly in their guttural pouches, and can infect horses intermittently although showing no signs of infection themselves. This is probably the most important cause of infection recurring

Vaccines against strangles are available but are not 100% effective. Any horse which shows suspicious signs of illness should be isolated until strangles is ruled out by vet. at intervals of several months, after apparent clearance. Testing for “non clinical” carriers can be done by the collection of deep nasopharyngeal swab and guttural pouch wash samples for laboratory investigations. Strangles can take an unusual course with abscesses forming deep in the body. This is often termed ‘bastard strangles’ and can be very difficult to treat successfully. Affected horses may show signs of colic or abscesses might discharge from many internal sites. Cases lose weight and often require euthanasia on humane grounds with colic, respiratory distress or other complicating illnesses associated with multifocal organ damage. Occasionally a horse becomes a symptomless carrier and this has been discussed above. Often these carriers only spread the infection when they are stressed e.g. at the time of foaling or after transportation or handling for farriery or routine worming or vaccination. Unless they can be successfully treated by guttural pouch medication, it is difficult to know how these animals are best managed as they are a serious risk of infection to other horses. This is something else that should be discussed with your veterinarian. Strangles is rarely fatal but deaths can occur, particularly in younger horses. Occasionally a horse that recovers from strangles will develop a condition known as purpura hemorrhagica. This is due to an unusual immune reaction to the streptococcal bacteria and results in widespread damage to blood vessels, resulting in swellings of the legs and head and bruiselike patches in the mouth. Your veterinarian should be called immediately if you suspect this life-threatening condition. Zoetis, the pharmaceutical com-

pany that now manufactures the vaccine, have cleverly produced a “two in one” vaccine that contains both tetanus and strangles antigens. The price for the combined vaccine is very similar to the tetanus only. Psychologically, the general horse owners seem very willing to vaccinate for tetanus, yet less so for strangles. The “two in one” vaccine makes this easier to accept as the price is the same. The combined vaccine has been around for many years now, and I believe that this combination has been one of the reasons the disease incidence has reduced because of a general “Herd Immunity” in the horse population.

HOW TO TAKE YOUR HORSE’S TEMPERATURE

To take a horse's temperature, insert the tip of the thermometer a couple of inches into the rectum with your right hand. Generally, you don't need to use any sort of lubricant, and most horses don't object to the procedure. It's wise to keep a tight grip on the thermometer! When the temperature has stabilized, remove the thermometer and read the result. In general, a reading of less than or equal to 101.5o F (38.6o C) for a mature horse or up to 102o F (38.9o C) for a foal is considered normal. Higher readings may indicate infection or other illness. If a reading is higher than normal, consult a veterinarian.

Electrolytes and the need to replace them By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Equine Nutritional Therapist, Medical Herbalist and Product Formulator Š2016

Replacing electrolytes lost through sweating is crucial to ensuring good health in horses.

equilibrium. About 95% of the sodium which leaves the body is excreted in the urine) . ElectroPlus also contains the herb Uva Ursi which is used because of its urinary antiseptic action, diuretic action and astringent. Because the leaves are the only part of the plant used, this herb can cause discolouration of the urine. Vitamin C is also used in the ElectroPlus for its enormous benefits. Although horses synthesise vitamin C, they do not synthesise enough and therefore when undergoing enormous stress require high levels. This speeds wound healing, gives tensile strength to connective tissue, helps activate many enzymes, speeds formation of new

proteins, detoxifies substances from destroyed cells, helps prevent haemorrhage, increases urine production, a lack of vitamin C can lead to damage to muscle, capillaries, leucocytes, capillaries, erythrocytes, platelets, calcium content in the blood, liver, pancreas, spleen, adrenals, gastrointestinal tract, genitourinary tract and endocrine system). Dr. Schussler's analysis of the inorganic mineral ash that remains after the human or animal body is burnt revealed that it is primarily made up of 12 mineral salts: and that therefore these minerals must play a vital role in both the physical integrity and proper functioning of the organism as a whole. Every time your horse sweats, it loses electrolytes whihc are crucial to maintaining good health. The main electrolytes are sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride and phosphorus. Minor electrolytes are iron, copper, zinc, cobalt, selenium, sulphur and iodine which are required in trace amounts. One litre of sweat contains approximately 10 gm of salt (8 gms of sodium Chloride and 2 grams of potassium chloride). ElectroPlus acts as a preventative from electrolyte imbalances because it is a buffered acid/alkaline neutraliser, electrolyte and mild diuretic formula. ElectroPlus contains ten tissue salts they are listed below: each tissue salt has a key role to play, some of these are indicated: calcium phosphate ( cell builder), calcium sulphate (suppuration remover), calcium fluoride (tissue strengthener), potassium phosphate (nerve power activator), potassium sulphate (cell oxygenator), potassium chloride (congestion remover), sodium sulphate (problem fluid remover), iron phosphate (inflammation remover), magnesium phosphate (neuromuscular coordinator) , sodium phosphate (metabolic acid remover) with the inclusion of zinc sulphate (insulin utilisation, sexual maturation, sperm function, RNA production, retina function, white blood cell function, alkaline phosphatase utilisation and liver function). Hi-Form E also contains sodium chloride (a major component of the cations of the extra cellular fluid and will regulate the acid-base

Minerals and salts target different organs From page 14

Further investigation predictably revealed that the different organs and parts of the body were made up of different minerals, and/or different apportionments of those minerals. He therefore concluded that those different minerals and/or different apportionments were vital for both the integrity and functioning of those individual organs and parts. In 1938, Dr. Maurice Blackmore (1906-1978), an Australian Naturopathic Physician, devised a method that retained the symptomatology of Schussler, but employed small pharmacological doses of mineral substance (ranging from 4mg in the case of calcium fluoride, to 260mg in the case of sodium phosphate). In 1988, Hi-Form Equine began developing formulas for use in equines using these tissue salts as part of their formulation. Each tissue salt used in Hi-Form's formulations are used for a specific purpose. Most commercial electrolyte formulas contain industrial or technical grade minerals/ salts which are very poorly absorbed by the equine. These formulas supply very high levels of these various salts at the expense of the animal. An outline of the possibilities that can arise as a result of prescribing minerals in large therapeutic doses, or in the wrong form is as follows: A deficiency may be temporarily corrected or balanced but not maintained in the longer term. A mineral deficiency may be corrected at the expense of a new mineral deficiency. In Performance horses Cause of fatigue is a reduction in energy stores of glucose which forces the horse to slow down and use free fatty acids. Body strengthening is a vital part of the training program, but the basic problem with body strengthening is the recovery time necessary to achieve biological response and improvement. Short training periods with a gradual

Maintaining a balanced diet which includes electrolyte supplement will be beneficial for performance horses and those which sweat profusely, especially in summer.

increase in workload is an excellent guideline. Bone responses are increased by training stress such as remodelling and thickening and increased strength. 'a chain is only as good as its weakest link' There are many factors that effect training: external, such as high winds, lightening, heat and internal, such as injury/infection, the horse's reaction to fight or to flee. Extreme stress can cause a series of uncontrolled reactions such as increased heart rate, blood pressure, sweating and perspiration, smooth muscle contracting of the digestive system and increased hormone levels. The immune system can be affected by a short period of intense exercise. It is important to control the stress levels placed on the horse. Physical exercise is external stress and it is essential to increase stress in small amounts so the horse can cope with and adjust to stress levels. There is a catch 22 scenario though and that is your horse's body must undergo stress to develop and increase his/her ability to perform. As your horse becomes fitter the range in which you can work safely becomes smaller, this means enough stress to get a training effect and too much which will damage the horse. As a horse reaches maximum fitness levels it

becomes extremely difficult to further improve the horse without damaging him/her. Progressive heart rate testing is a safe reliable method of measuring your horses' fitness level. A well-balanced diet, a good daily supplement and an electrolyte such as ElectroPlus is an excellent way to manage high performance horses or horses that tend to sweat profusely. The ElectroPlus is also now available in vetpacks. Please contact us for free advice on balancing your feed ration during the summer months. New trails ready for Kilkivan Great Horse Ride Participants in the 2017 Kilkivan Great Horse Ride will be able to choose from five trails this year, with two new options leaving Kilkivan on Saturday, April 1. The convenience of starting and finishing at the Kilkivan Showgrounds regularly attracts big numbers to those trails, and organizers expect the new full day Kurandah Trail to be popular. Great views over varied scenery bordered by Kurandah Creek will reward riders - who will need to have fit, and perhaps shod, mounts to ensure completion. The short, post-lunch Cave Hill Trail (also starting at the showgrounds) allows young riders/older horses (plus others) to get a Grand-Parade-of-Horses experience without having to spend more than three hours on the trail. For the second consecutive year, a two-day ride is being offered. The Bongmiller - Hanging Rock Trail starts at Woolooga Saleyards and overnights at Widgee Showgrounds, then incorporates the single-day option of the Thornside-toKilkivan route so popular over the last three decades of the event. The Oakview Carriage Trail will start from

Kilkivan and drop in on Wide Bay Creek a few times as it covers areas to the east of Kilkivan. President of Kilkivan Great Horse Ride, Dave Golding said that his committee is especially grateful to the landowners who allow the use of their properties for the trails. "This is what makes our event so special," he said. "Access to often beautiful paddocks is otherwise unavailable, so 2017 is again a chance to see new vistas, even if you've been participating for years!" But non-riders have again got plenty to draw them to Kilkivan for its big annual weekend. There are new elements in the family-friendly Great Horse Ride program at both the Showgrounds and in the street program, as well as the features that worked so well last year - the free campfire concert, the free petting zoo and pony rides, and lots of demonstrations and activities. And regardless of whether you bring a horse or not, the camping at the Kilkivan Showgrounds is free for the 2017 Great

Tips for the show ring When it comes to presenting your horse for a show, you have to take everything into consideration. The ultimate goal when it comes to showing a horse is gaining the attention of the judge. On arrival at the show, unrug your horse and give it a good brush. Clean hooves with a hoof pick and brush clean, apply hoof black and spray with hair spray to seal and shine. Socks mush be cleaned and whitened with chalk or white cover cream. Highlight legs with Ravens oil, makeup or oil depending on leg colour. Once the legs have been completed fully, you can then move onto your horse’s tail. The top of the tail may be braided or pulled - if pulled the side may need a final tidy up with razor. The false tail needs to be positioned, securely fastened and trimmed to correct length. Then most importantly a spray with a shine spray and final brush.

You then need to move onto your checkers and shark’s teeth. Grab a water spray, a small round brush and a cut nit comb or checker comb. With your comb draw a line in the middle of the horse’s back so that it lines up with the top of the tail. Draw another line underneath the middle line so you know how long the checkers should be. Then start drawing your checkers on your horse lining them up with a base line each time. Your shark’s teeth should start right from the flank on the horse and all it consists of is drawing crosses on the side of your horse. When you have finished the checkers and shark’s teeth you move onto the make-up. Black chalk or black cream makeup is applied around the eyes and muzzle. The blended with a clean cloth or baby wipe to achieve the desired effect. and finally apply Vaseline or gloss makeup to add shine to your finished makeup.

Plaiting the mane To get the best results the mane should be thoroughly washed and conditioned and the mane pulled to about 8cm long and still damp. ( Keep mane damp with spray bottle) Step 1. Divide into sections 3.5 cm apart, hold back the rest of the mane with a comb or clip and plait right down to the end and secure with a rubber band. Step2. Using a darning needle and cotton the same colour as the mane sew into the end of the mane then fold the plait in half then in half again and sew through plait to secure Step 3. When all plaits are finished and securely sewn give a final spray with hair spray and put on a clean satin lined hood or skinny hood to protect plaits and keep them neat and clean ready for the show.

The Horse Report

Commit to a relationship with your horse By TANJA KRAUS Is the honeymoon over ? Seems like an unusual topic for a horsemanship newsletter but I often compare our relationship with our horses, to our relationships with our partners. When we first begin our relationship with our partners, it typically starts with a 'dating' phase. We go out, get to know each other, enjoy each others company, and learn how to communicate with each other - discover our likes and dislikes. As we become more comfortable with each other, we become more relaxed - instead of one person picking the other up to go out on a date, the date may begin at home, and as we go further along (all being well) and we become a 'serious couple' we start spending nights at each others places and it continues on. All the way through this initial phase, each person is taking into consideration the other how they are feeling, what they like and dislike, and how to communicate. With horses, we kind of start out the same - we spend time learning about the horse, spending time with him, figuring out what he likes and dislikes, how he best understands what we are trying to ask him to do. Then at some point, we often begin to care more for 'our agenda' and less for 'what the horse wants' and then it turns into a one way street. I understand that some people have horses and they are not interested in a 'relationship' with the horse - they are in it for their agenda, and their agenda alone.

Building a relationship with your horse takes time and commitment. I am not one of those people. I like spending time with my horses just hanging out in the yards or paddocks. I like playing at liberty, I like spending time on the ground with them, and of course I like riding them but I feel I would be missing out on so much of the experience of having horses in my life, if all I wanted to do was head to the paddock and ride each time. That would be which is very much about me and not so much about him. Now to clarify, I’m not saying that If I go to the paddock to ride, that I will change my mind if I feel like the horse doesn't want to be ridden. What I am saying is that I will spend time connecting with him, touching base and then ride. Just like in a human relationship, it takes thought and effort to maintain. Date nights, time away together - after a few years these are not so much 'getting to know you' anymore, as much as they are 'I enjoy spending time with you'. Often with our horses we are so time poor,

coupled with being focussed on our agenda 'I must ride you today' that we don't take into consideration the horse. The horse has his herd, his paddock, where he spends over 90% of his time and then we pull him out take him away and ride him. How does that promote the horse enjoying your company ? How is that having a relationship? I often hear people complain about ground work - 'its boring', 'I just want to get on and ride' and I feel like 'wow, you are missing out on such a great experience with your horse!' Our ground work can be like our 'courtship'. We spend time getting to know him and communicating with him. We keep the communication open and continue to build a dialogue that we both understand. We help him feel good by taking the time to stretch him, warm his muscles up, find any sore spots or tension, we help him develop muscle and strength before adding the weight of the rider. These are just a few of many benefits of ground work, but you just want to ride him, right ? I spend time with my horses so I can learn their body language - it really is a dialogue between us, and the more time I spend with my horses, the better I can understand what they are trying to say ( I often joke about how Cooper and I a like an old married couple, because we understand each other so well). Liberty and just spending down time with my horses all allows me to enjoy them and them me. What do your horses see when they see you - a 'rider' or a partner ?

LEADING REIN/OPEN PONY Price: $ 10,000. ONO 12.0 hh Reg: Riding Pony, SHC Bay Gelding Sire: Falconhurst Boy Blue Dam: Kelvin Grove Shireen Bordershow Bling - Stunning little pony with that look at me presence. Always bringing home a broad sash. Easily qualifies for Royals and Grand Nationals and was top 10 Leading Rein Pony at Grand Nationals 2015 Sadly he has not been shown for some time as no time or regular rider! He is in light work at the moment with an adult rider a couple of times a week. Just waiting for a new home and little rider! He will make some family very happy! He is only for sale as it is very hard for me to get small riders constantly. This pony is top quality and would suit a family with children - a leading rein rider and an older sibling wanting quality. This pony has not reached his full potential. He is quiet and well educated with beautiful movement. I have run out of steam and can’t do it anymore! Contact: Judy Ph: 02 9679 1504 Mob: 0408 284 788 Email: judychapman@bigpond.com
