Racing Queensland to showcase country racing Racing Queensland is set to showcase some of the state’s most iconic regional events over the next 12 months including the Barcaldine Tree of Knowledge Festival and the Mt Isa Rodeo. Recently, RQ announced that it will provide TAB opportunities to a further seven regional thoroughbred clubs, including national television coverage on Sky Racing, following the success of the 2018 Birdsville Cup as it continues to unlock commercial outcomes for the industry. In addition, Birdsville, which enjoys an annual pilgrimage of close to 7000 fans to the remote Simpson Desert town, will retain its status on TAB circuit in September with the concept expanded across the state to include Barcaldine, Dalby, Emerald, Innisfail, Mount Isa, Warwick and Yeppoon. “Racing plays an important role in regional communities right across Queensland and we’re delighted to be able to showcase them in this manner,” RQ Deputy Chair Sharon Dawson said. “By providing non-TAB clubs with TAB opportunities we are able to deliver increased prize money for participants, greater wagering returns back to the industry and can broadcast our regional clubs to national and international TV audiences.” In addition to the Barcaldine Tree of Knowledge Festival and the Mt Isa Rodeo, the Longreach Cup will be broadcast nationally for the first time. The likes of Emerald and Innisfail will trial mid-week timeslots on SKY1. At the beginning of last year, the Queensland Government announced more than $70 million in funding to support country racing and to
Queensland county racing will receive a major boost through Racing Queensland’s provision of TAB opportunities to several regional meetings, including coverage on Sky Racing. recognise the social and economic benefits it provides to regional communities, as well as the racing industry more broadly. “We’re great supporters of country racing and our $70 million investment over four years is providing the support the industry needs at the grassroots level,” Racing Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said. “Country racing brings local communities together, helps to drive visitation to regional towns and boosts local economies. “Racing helps to define country Queensland and the government will continue to support clubs and participants because of the benefits
the sport delivers.” With RQ committed to delivering events and experiences that showcase Queensland bringing people together through the thrill of racing Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones said the announcement coincided with the Premier’s Year of Outback Tourism. “Growing the tourism industry in the outback is an important part of our strategy to grow the economy and create jobs in west Queensland,” she said. “We know that people travel to see great events. That’s why major events like these are so important.”

Property maintenance Maintaining rural properties can be challenging and time consuming. There are always lawns and paddocks to mow, driveways and laneways to grade, level and maintain, arenas and round yards to level and spread evenly, manure to pick up in the paddocks and manure piles to disperse and spread. Doing this by hand is labour intensive and time consuming. Hiring someone with machinery is costly. Now there is a better solution. Most horse places have a tractor, quad or ATV getting around the farm. Mostly its job is to pull a small trailer, a "one trick pony" arena rake and to get from A to B. What if your vehicle could do all of this plus grade roads -level - harrow - pasture prep spread manure - put in fire breaks and roads? Well now its possible and with the one implement. ABI Attachments have a range of attachments specifically designed for Quads ATVs and smaller tractors to do all of this with the one attachment. They have designed these implements to be very easy to handle and very easy to use. All concerns of durability are perished upon sight. These implements need no servicing and are built like tanks. One New Zealand Rascal Pro Arena Rake owner said, "this thing will be here long after only cockroaches roam the planet!" The TR3 Rake is a 3-point grader, dozer, arena rake and paddock harrow and ripper. Simple hook up and sizes starting for a 23hp tractor there is an option for every scale. The Rascal Pro is a tow ball or pin drop hook up for the Quad or Side by Side. Only requiring a 350-400 cc minimum and
goes right up to the big 700cc. It is quite unimaginable that these tools will do all that is stated but - go to www.abiattachments.com.au or Youtube ABI Rascal Pro and ABI TR3 rake and see for yourself. These USA made innovations are the originals and the new way around the farm. Now there is only the need for one tool not three or four "one trick ponies" lying in the long grass at the back of the shed that you never use!
TIPS FOR PLANNING & BUILDING FENCES, YARDS AND STABLES Holding yards Suggested specifications are: •2.40 m or 2.75 m panels, centre to centre •1.70 m to 1.80 m overall height, •230 mm maximum interval between rails. All rails should be on the inside of posts. •Bottom rail 380 mm to 460 mm off the ground. •Posts timber 230 mm to 310 mm, 1.07 m in ground. Steel piping 76 mm •Rails. 150 mm × 50 mm hardwood or 45 mm steel Gates Entrance gates at least 3.00 m wide, and internal gates 2.40 m wide. Gates must fit neatly to prevent horses from rubbing and getting their necks caught. Round yard A round yard for lunging should be 12 m to 18 m. The height of the fence/wall should be 1.80 m to 2.14 m. An outward slope from bottom to top of 380 mm horizontally is advisable to keep the horse off the wall, preventing injury to itself or the rider. Coarse sand is an ideal base Horse crush •Width: Up to 790 mm (inside measurement). •Length: Up to 2.30 m (per single crush). •Rails: Minimum 1.80 m high; 230 mm between rails; bottom rails 380 mm off the ground. Sides can be closed in by either sheet metal or rubber conveyor belting up to a height of at least 1.07 m. Front and back gates are preferably sliding ones. Stables Stable should be 3.70 m × 3.70 m, walls should be at least 2.75 m high. Inside walls may be smoothly lined with wooden planking or rubber conveyor belting up to a height of 1.40 m. to prevent injury and also protect the walls from pawing and kicking. Doors should be at least 2.40 m high, and 1.20 m to 1.40 m wide, with no protrusions to cause injury. Common floor materials used are concrete, rolled sand, dirt and gravel.

Equine fencing - planning and maintenance One of the most important things to consider when setting up your equestrian facility is choosing the type of fencing you will use. Not only will you want to fence the perimeter of your property, but also individual paddocks, work arenas and yards. Determining the type of fencing that is appropriate for your situation can be challenging. Before investing in fencing, there are some things you should consider. Cost is obviously one of the major factors when building fencing. Initial cost of materials, labor to set up and the expence of maintenance. Fencing Materials - There are many different types of fencing - timber, metal pipe, mesh, vinyl and PVC planks, electric fencing, wire fencing just to name a few. Each of these types of fencing has pros and cons. Terrain and weather - will also be factors in the material you choose. If your pastures are prone to flooding, wood posts may not be the best option and metal the way to go. Rocky and hilly terrain or wet areas may not be accessible so you may be limited to star pickets and wire. No matter what type of fencing you're looking at, you need to pick a height for the fence and decide on the width of the gates. Gates used solely for horses should be a minimum of four feet wide (1.2m). If you will be driving equipment through the gate, you must accommodate the width of the vehicles and which way you want the gate to swing! Many horse owners find a combination of fencing is the best alternative. For example, if you have timber fencing, cattle rail, pvc rails or even wire fencing you may end up putting a line of electric wire along the top or inside, which will discourage horses chewing or leaning on it to reach for the grass (that's always greener!) on the other side.

ELECTRIC FENCING Electric fencing can be used for temporary or permanent fencing and can be either battery operated, solar or connected to mains power. Once installed, electric fencing is reliable and usually requires very little maintenance. Electric fencing is one of the best choice for horses. It reduces boundary impacts as it will not cut legs or break bones if a horse does kick or bolt through it. It is easy to install – there is no straining, and two wires are sufficient to keep horses contained. Electric fencing is also a good choice for strip grazing, temporary fencing or stand-off to prevent livestock from leaning on permanent fences or chewing on posts. Aaurora Fencing, based at Nerang, can advise on all electric fencing products, and can provide a complete fencing service, including professional fencing installation. Arena cost cutting can prove to be expensive BY TODD CUNNINGHAM Equestrian Land Developments Pty Ltd More often than not arena rebuilds are required as a result of poorly designed and constructed bases or from the use of unsuitable materials all in the effort to cut costs. Outlined are a few points to consider when designing and constructing your arena. Correct and quality earthworks are key. Getting your sister’s best friend’s uncle who owns a Drott up the road to do the work for a carton of beer, isn't always the ideal way to start out your construction. This is the stage where the site is chosen, drainage is planned and designed and will determine how your arena will work on completion. Full survey is paramount - getting the falls right and the exact measurements you require is key. More often than not, ELD arrive onsite for a consultation where the earthworks are already done and the customer is adamant the measurements are 20m x 60m - when measured correctly these are often not even close. Depending on the cut required for the job you will need to take into consideration the batters and drainage outside of the arena, so cutting a neat 20m x 60m rectangle is only the beginning. Use only quality assured materials for your arena construction. Cutting costs at this stage of the build will only result in failure down the track. Never continue construction during or after wet weather as this will guarantee failure of the sub-structure in the future. Compaction is vital - any tracks left in the base layers now will result in an uneven riding surface later. The European concept of the use of drainage systems underneath rarely works in our Australian climate. We tend to get heavy downpours rather than light misting rain events. These designs do not cope with this kind of extremes in weather. The ELD design which has been successfully used since it's design and inception by myself in 2000, consists of two base layers. The first layer supplies the solid foundation for the build, while the second layer (or Blinding Layer) is a 'protective' layer to stop the rock in the base layer rolling through the surface. This is often another reason arenas require rebuilding - rock appearing through the surface and causing stone bruises and other lameness issues in horses. The second layer can also be altered to suit the discipline the arena will be used for. Should the arena be used for Western events, such as reining, where a good slide distance is paramount, a treatment may be applied to the materials to ensure this layer is going to stand up to constant wear and tear of an extreme nature. Dressage will require a slightly different treatment to Show Jumping as the requirements in the training and performance differ. For more information, visit www.equestrianlanddevelopments.com or www.facebook.com/eldarenas

Adjustable Trees and Adjusting Trees Why It May Not Work Although an appealing concept, adjustable trees and adjusting trees may not solve your problem, and may actually create some new ones. Here are some things to consider.
Adjustable Trees or Interchangeable Gullet Plates Because the shape of a narrow horses withers is very different than the shape of a medium, wide, or extra wide withers, simply replacing the head (front) of the tree with a wider version of the same shape does not solve the problem. For example, if a narrow horse’s withers are shaped somewhat like a triangle and a wider horse’s withers are more rounded, simply widening the triangle shape is no solution. Not only does the shape not conform to the withers shape, but the result is often rocking or uneven contact along the points and legs of the tree.
The Problem with Spreading or Narrowing Saddle Tree Points Using a vice-like tool to open or close a tree can result in some of the problems previously described. Other problems that can occur are broken, weakened, or uneven tree points. Spreading or narrowing the angle of the legs/bars of the tree can create a fulcrum at the base of the withers which can cause pressure and rocking. Changing the angles of the points and the legs of the tree after a tree has been finished with webbing and seated may also change the tension of that webbing and alter the feel of the seat. While adjustable trees and the practice of altering trees after they are made is an option for any manufacturer, many choose not to do it for the negative reasons cited here. Other manufacturers may agree to do it, but the alterations may invalidate the warranty. Horses change over time for many reasons. Change of season, training techniques and intensity, feed, injury, and age are just a few of the variables. When a horse changes, the width of the tree is only one of many factors to consider when fitting a saddle. Remember, if your horse changes enough that you need to change saddles, your old saddle still has significant value. Often times, the difference between the value of a new saddle and your current saddle is little more than the cost of trying to adjust the tree and deal with the problems that may result.

The benefits of equine herbal medicine By VICTORIA FERGUSON The benefits of equine herbal medicine are absolutely awesome. These include: •Provides what wild horses seek out for self healing •Affordable and nurturing •Sustainable – the carbon footprint left by herbs is on the positive side •Non-invasive dosing – horses love their herbal medicine •Virtually no risk of side effects – none when prescribed & dispensed by qualified practitioners •Treats causes not just symptoms resulting in complete healing •Holistic – often horses are more healthy after a course of herbal medicine than they were before they became sick •Protects and enhances the immune system – prevents illness, and accelerates healing time •Nature’s dispensary provides myriad herbs to cure every imaginable illness or injury. •No cruel testing on animals PROVIDES WHAT WILD HORSES SEEK OUT FOR SELF HEALING “Through evolution, mammals have developed a relationship with medicinal plants. Plants with antibacterial properties, for example, protect both the plant and the animal that eats it, thus guarding both species from disease. Animals requiring the plant’s medicinal properties acquire a taste for them, while the plant’s bitterness deters the healthy animal from eating it, thus the plant is protected from being completely consumed …” Caroline Ingraham - The Animal Aromatics Workbook. AFFORDABLE AND NURTURING Horse owners often turn to herbal medicine because they cannot afford the increasingly high cost of veterinary medicine and are looking for natural alternatives. “Health care providers for both humans and animals are realising the public’s desire to use less toxic treatments when challenges to health occur. The general mood is shifting. They are looking for treatments that will nurture the body, unlike many of the medical procedures and drugs,” wrote Dr Ian Bidstrup MVSc & Dr Joanne Watkins MVSc Foreword to The Practical Horse Herbal. SUSTAINABLE The carbon footprint left by herbs is on the positive side. Compare this with the massive pollution contributed to by the multinational drug companies, and the contamination of water and soil by antibiotic residues. “The fairly recent discovery that all of the water supplies in the industrialized countries are contaminated with minute amounts of antibiotics (from their excretion into water supplies) means that bacteria everywhere are experiencing low doses of antibiotics all the time. This exposure is exponentially driving resistance learning; the more antibiotics Page 14
Herbs and herbal medicine have proven to be a great benefit in treating many ailments.
that go into the water, the faster the bacteria learn,” Stephen Harrod Buhner stated in Herbal Antibiotics Natural Alternatives for Treating Drug Resistant Bacteria. NON-INVASIVE DOSING Horses love their herbal medicine. For the past 25 years my clients are always telling me how after just a few doses, their horses can be orally syringed with their herbal medicine without a halter, and they actually open their mouths for their medicine. This is infinitely better than making them sore and cranky with repetitive injections. Liquid herbal extracts dosed in this way are highly bio-available and are quickly absorbed into the bloodstream via the liver, and do not go through the gastro-intestinal tract. This is a fundamental and extremely important difference between equine herbal medicine provided by professionally qualified practitioners and unqualified people just retailing dried herbs. We are grateful to the grandmother of animal herbal medicine Juliette de Bairacli Levy, whose books have informed and inspired us. “It was necessary to write this book in order to keep alive the ancient and valuable art of the herbalist in veterinary medicine. I believe this is the first veterinary herbal for farm animals and horses to appear in the English language.” - Juliette de Bairacli Levy, The Complete Herbal Handbook for Farm and Stable (first published in 1952 by Faber with five more editions up until 1991). VIRTUALLY NO RISKS OF SIDE EFFECTS And none when herbs are prescribed and dispensed by qualified equine herbal practitioners, who are educated in the safe use of herbal medicine for horses. For a list of graduates from my School of Equine Herbal Medicine go to www.victoriaferguson.com.au/school and for my consultations go to www.victoriaferguson.com.au/consultations “ In herbal medicine, too, we have violent acting substances, usually derived from the poisonous groups of plants. I have excluded them altogether, influenced perhaps by the
wild animals which instinctively avoid the poisonous plants. Also nature has provided always a gentle herb to do the work …” Juliette de Bairacli Levy. “The complex relationship between mammals and plants has resulted in mammals developing an enzymatic physiology that has adapted to break down and neutralise most plant compounds. “Such a process is not seen with many synthetic drugs, where the body has the inability to efficiently metabolise the active compounds, leading to potential toxicity or side effects.” - Caroline Ingraham, The Animal Aromatics Workbook. Genuine topical herbal remedies such as washes, oils, creams and ointments are completely safe to use on the skin both for the horse and the person administering them. TREATS CAUSES NOT JUST SYMPTOMS This results in complete healing, so that once the course of herbal medicine has been completed, it is unlikely that the condition will return, which often occurs when symptoms only are treated. A very good example of this is drug treatments for gut ulcers. My philosophy of classical herbal medicine, which I share with internationally famous herbalists like Dr James Duke, David Hoffman and Stephen Harrod Buhner, is to treat causes as well as symptoms, to achieve as complete healing as possible, by using the most appropriate herbs, dosages and treatment periods. Quite simply herbs stimulate the body to heal itself more quickly and more completely than it would without this support. HOLISTIC TREATMENTS I have often been told by my clients that their horses were more healthy after herbal treatment for an illness or injury than they were before the injury. This is pretty exciting and a true compliment to the use of holistic principles. “Herbalism is practised holistically, as orthodox medicine and other complementary therapies can be. But what is holistic medicine, other than the latest buzz word? Continued page 15

Herbs can be used as a natural alternative From page 14 “We have gone beyond the ideal of ‘treating the whole person and not the symptoms’ to begin to articulate a definition of a holistic approach to health. Holistic medicine addresses itself to the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of those who come for care. It views health as a positive state, not as the absence of disease. It emphasises the uniqueness of the individual and the importance of tailoring treatment to meet each person’s needs.” - David Hoffman, Holistic Herbal. PROTECTS AND ENHANCES THE IMMUNE SYSTEM There is rarely a prescription that goes out of my dispensary without at least one immune system herb in it. These herbs prevent illness and accelerate healing times. The first line of defence is strengthening the immune system. “Countless studies have found that the healthier your immune system, the less likely you are to get a disease and the more likely you are, if you do get sick, to have a milder episode. “Our immune system is in fact our first line of defence. It’s job is to protect us from disease, and, if disease occurs, to cure it. A healthy immune system is therefore the first and most important part of health and healing.” Stephen Harrod Buhner, Herbal Antibiotics – Natural Alternatives for Treating Drug-Resistant Bacteria. NATURE’S DISPENSARY Provides myriad herbs to cure every imaginable illness or injury. Witness the Chinese, Ayurvedic, Western and countless native Pharmacopeia with literally millions of herbal medicines. In the book, Complementary and Alternative Veterinary Medicine, Principles and Practice, authors Allen Schoen and Susan Wynn
Herbs used in herbal medicine can be effective treatmenst for a wdie range of ailments.
have included an equine Materia Medica from these three main pharmacopeia. It’s important to note here that the herbs used for humans and animals are the same herbs with some important exclusions. For example the herb Black Walnut is toxic to horses but it is often included in anti-parasitic mixes for humans. “Why are natural plant chemicals worthy of pharmaceutical rivals? Because they often work on the same physiologic pathways and principles as their prescription counterparts. The big difference is that phytochemicals work along several circuits simultaneously and naturally. “The pharmaceutical usually is a single substance that works on one circuit or two. I think of it as the difference between a shotgun and a bullet. The magic bullet is precision targeted and has no regard for how it might disrupt the rest of the body. Herbs are shotgun blasts that contain thousands of natural active phytochemicals – some that will help with the correctly diagnosed ailment, others that will help with undiagnosed and unknown problems, and still
others that are just plain good for you that you probably need anyway. ” - Dr James Duke PhD, Dr Duke’s Essential Herbs. NO CRUEL TESTING ON ANIMALS There is no cruel laboratory testing on animals with herbal medicine, they have already been tested by the animals them-
selves, including us, for thousands of years. “The gentler phytomedicinal doses from herbs are the crowing achievements of thousands upon thousands of years of research and testing. They’re efficacious. They’re safe.” Dr James Duke PhD. © Victoria Ferguson Dip.Herb www.victoriaferguson.com.au

Feeding your aging horse a balanced diet that provides its nutritional needs will also help to keep the horse happy and active. including what they would naturally consume, you will be significantly reducing the levels of inflammation. Although it may be enticing to feed your beloved old friends a warm porridge-like meal this often does more harm than good. Although we have domesticated horses over time, their digestive system remains in its original format of requiring a high roughage content. For most of the horse’s life, their teeth continuously emerge through the gums to replace what is worn away by chewing. There is approximately 2-3 inches of replacement tooth under the gumline. However, when the horse reaches its mid20s, the reserve is often depleted, leaving them at risk of tooth loss. Tooth loss compromises digestion and their chewing ability, this is the only time where dampening their feed may come in handy as well as choosing softer hays and smaller chopped chaff, so they are able eat easily. This in combination with regular dentist
check-ups should keep your horses happy. Nutritional supplements can play a role in improving health and wellbeing of the horse. As the horse ages their ability to absorb nutrients declines, therefore supplementation with good quality nutrients can be beneficial in maintaining appropriate levels. Omega 3 fatty acids can play an important role in reducing chronic inflammation. Although the horse’s natural diet has a higher omega 6 (pro-inflammatory) to Omega 3 ratio, it is important to note that we have domesticated horses to do things they wouldn’t otherwise do in the wild, that may increase their levels of stress and therefore inflammation. This is where supplementing with Omega 3s may be beneficial in reducing systemic inflammation. Flaxseed/linseed oil and chia seed oil are the best plant-based sources for horses, it is best to get a nutritionist or veterinarian opinion to see if this may be suitable for your horse. continued page 17

Aging is a complex phenomenon which is a natural part of life, but chronic disease and illness doesn’t always need to be. The average life expectancy of a horse is around 25-30 years although this is far from an indication of their overall health. Horses may or may not develop health conditions as they age, depending on genetics, nutritional status, history and fitness. As horses get older, it is common for things to start slowing down and for them to be not as strong as their younger days. Their digestive system may reduce in function and absorption rates can drop which can reduce their immunity. There may be increased breakdown of their joints and muscles, depending on what they have done throughout their life so far. Chronic systemic inflammation is a significant part of aging which is commonly accepted in people but not usually discussed in horses. Chronic low-level inflammation throughout the lifespan can occur from a myriad of environmental, genetic and nutritional causes and can contribute to the onset of inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, chronic pain, Cushing’s Disease, gastric ulcers and laminitis, just to name a few. So what can we do about it? We can look at the areas which we can change, nutrition being the easiest to manipulate. If we start to look at the horse’s diet and assess what may cause inflammation, this can be anything that is un-natural for a horse to eat - from bi-products/waste-products, to animal products such as whey and fish proteins. Significant reduction of inflammation can also be achieved through feeding the horse a natural diet and increasing the levels of beneficial nutrients and vitamins which are involved in these processes. By feeding your horse a high roughage diet (quality hay, long-stem chaffs and pasture)

Horses, like humans, need more care with age From page 16 Just be sure to steer clear of any marine-based oils as horses are herbivores and not fishermen. Increasing antioxidants; vitamins A, C and E as well as selenium can assist in decreasing inflammation by improving the rate of detoxification and prevent the accumulation of toxins in the body. Although horses manufacture their own vitamin C, studies have found that as they age their natural levels of vitamin C decline. Although more research needs to be completed to investigate why this occurs, it gives us more insight into the importance of supplementation. Exercise horses over the age of 12 are more likely to experience pain at a higher level. As horses age, there is a higher risk of injury and pain related conditions, including degenerative joint disease, hamstring injuries, tendon ligament damage, back pain and muscles soreness, to name a few. Managing these pain-related issues is essential to avoid the escalation of other problems. Every horse should be given assistance to prevent and manage pain. This can be achieved by regular massage, Bowen, acupuncture, equine tension relief and natural products which may include some herb and plant extracts. Always look for products that have science behind them and are produced in a HCCAP, Feed Safe facility to ensure quality control and GMP. Products such as the ProflamAid Plus and EquiGesic Plus are a safe and effective way to manage pain. One part of the ageing process may involve an enlargement of a part of the pituitary gland, termed pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID, also known as equine Cushing’s disease), this can cause great concerns for horse owners and horses alike. It appears that equine Cushing’s disease occurs in approximately 15 to 30% of horses and ponies mostly older than 20. There are particular breeds that tend to be more prone than others such as Morgans. It is a slow progressive disease and can take a number of years before symptoms occur. These symptoms may even begin as early as midlife or in the teenage years of the horse but may go unnoticed or possi-
As horses age, they need to managed more carefully both nutritionally and physically. bly be confused with something else going on. When at an event we always watch the horses, as there is so much you can learn from their body language, which can be very strong or very subtle. Many horses at competitions appear to have soreness issues ranging from mild to chronic, some horses can manage pain better than others. Just remind yourself that pain is common, and it should be treated seriously, take the pain away no matter how mild and see for yourself how much improvement there is in a happy, painfree horse. Although the musculoskeletal system of the horse loses strength as they age, if your horse isn’t showing signs of slowing down, then there is no reason to send them into early retirement. Exercise like nutrition is one of the easiest ways we can improve our horses’ health. Not only does exercise keep our horses (and ourselves!) fit, there are also many other benefits it provides. Studies have found consistent low exertion exercise to be the most beneficial for older horses due to the changes in the type of muscle fibre away from the type that assists with endurance exercise. There have been findings of improved insulin sensitivity; this is extremely important to note if your horse has insulin resistance or diabetes. As well as improved immunity and cardiac health in older horses in consistent low intensity exercise.
Both diet and exercise can play a pivotal role in your horse’s health and longevity. It is important to always consult a qualified and reputable nutritionist or veterinarian. References: Adams, A. lesion, by in most cases well meaning owners, usually on the advice of some idiotic "know it all". Let me assure you folks, there is one thing, and one thing only that "fixes" splints and that is the unbelievably miraculous natural healing powers and response by the body to injury. All we have to do is understand what's happened, and what is happening, sit tight, be patient and wait for nature to do her work. What we must ensure is that we do absolutely nothing to impede or interfere with the healing process. That being said, there are very many things we can do to help encourage and maximise the process and this is what we should do. Owners should always seek qualified professional advice, but failing that, doing nothing will almost always guarantee success and can be a better alternative than snake oil Joe's miracle lotion. At this point, I should mention that I am discussing the typical half egg shaped lump that forms, usually on the upper inside of the front leg as these are by far the most common splint. Splint damage can result from direct trauma (e.g. kicking a rail or being kicked by another horse, and fractures that occur in race horses from a different circumstance) also, but these are different situations and certainly require proper assessment and management The front leg of the horse anatomically is almost identical to the forearm of a human. and function of the horse. Unfortunately, some splints can develop into something of some significance and issue for the horse and owner, but this is almost always due to the mismanagement of the initial condition, or in many cases, due to the horrific effects some of the myriad magic potions and miracle cures applied directly to the

Nothing, and I repeat, nothing evokes such screams of anguish and despair as for a horse owner to awake and discover that their beloved horse has "Popped a Splint". Similarly, judges and learned horse assessors alike, love to disparagingly mark a horse down because they can gleefully spy a splint on the leg. Well folks, I have news for you, of all the problems there were to have, if my horse had to have an issue, I would prefer it to be a splint. Splints, for all the myth and hysteria surrounding them, really are quite innocuous and of little real consequence. Yes, they are a blemish, and in most cases, they will cause some varying degree of initial lameness, but if managed and handled correctly, once the damage has healed, they have no deleterious consequence for the horse, and in most cases will almost completely disappear. Splints occur directly as a result of the evolutionary development of the horse and in the majority of cases, the so called defect really says, or means, nothing about the "purity" or otherwise, of the conformation
In humans, we then have five digits running from the wrist. We all know the horse has only one digit, (cannon, fetlock and foot), but way back in time there were in fact five digits. One has completely disappeared, the little finger, the thumb remains vestigially as the chestnut, the middle finger has become the cannon bone and foot, but the index and fourth fingers remain in the horse as "the splint bones". It would be easy to say they have no function, which is probably true, but in fact because of the very complex nature and structure of the carpus, (wrist), the heads or most proximal part of the splint bones have to remain as part of the load bearing function of the limb, and in fact bear a large portion of weight as the limb loads in stance. Complicate this with turning, bending, coping with the instability added by a rider on the back, and we have an extremely complex bio-mechanical situation that even engineers would have difficulty quantifying. The cannon bone of the horse actually has three bones, albeit the inside and outer ones, (medial and lateral splint bones), only run part way down, but they are very tightly stuck, or joined, to the dominant cannon bone by a very strong ligament, (interosseous ligament). They are not fused or all bone, so as to give some flexibility and pliabity. Training is critical to the ability of these three bones of structures to withstand stress and load. The basic principles of training invoke the principle of progressive loading whereby progressively increasing loads are applied to a structure and living tissue has the ability to adapt, modify, and strengthen as a means of coping. Living tissue can cope with amazing loads if given the proper chance for develop, but if a sudden load, in excess of what it has been trained to accept, occurs, then damage will occur. This is exactly what happens to the interosseous ligament in the formation of a splint. Loads are transmitted down the leg from the centre of gravity in the chest as the limb loads in stance. The weight comes down the forearm, through the knee and onto the heads of the splint bones. A sudden excessive load can cause a tear of the attachment between the splint bone and the cannon bone. The Horse Report
The Horse Report
Nature has a way of healing splints on their own From page 20 What is very important to understand is that the so called splint is almost always the result of a soft tissue tear and the lump we see is actually not the initial problem. In very many cases, the initial damage has actually occurred sometime before we see the lump, (often weeks), and the horse can be quite lame without any obvious signs or reasons. Other lumps will appear almost immediately and this usually implies there has been some more considerable damage done to the actual body of the bone itself in the form of fissure, or hairline fractures because of the tightness or strength of the interosseous ligament. (The swelling in this case being soft tissue, not bone). It doesn't really matter the management is still much the same, just may take longer. So the much maligned lump, or "splint" that we see, is actually nature's way of curing or "fixing" the problem. The physiological process of wound healing is truly amazing. In the initial, or proliferation phase, the body produces a mass of new tissue or material to fill in and replace the damaged tissue. Once this new tissue, (or splint or lump), has started to realign and form, the next phase of wound healing is wound contraction and this is the wonderful and amazing phenomenon we see when the splint starts to reduce in size, and eventually in most cases, disappear.
X-raying the splint is recommend Our job as clinicians or carers is to make absolutely certain that we do everything possible to ensure that nothing occurs that will interfere with nature's way. The most usual interference comes from further and continuing damage that occurs from continuing to ride and work the horse. This will almost certainly result in a larger lump, and a more prolonged healing time. Yes, many will eventually heal and there will be no long term damage to the horse, but if the horse is lame, or if owners want to reduce the size of the lump and speed healing, the best thing they can do is spell the horse and as always, stall confinement will further reduce any ongoing trauma and give healing the best chance. Anti-inflammatory drugs, support wrapping, ice, and cooling lotions, will all help reduce the inflammation
and "help put the fire out", but remember it is the fire, or inflammatory process that is actually stimulating the healing. Each case is different and proper assessment and judgement should be applied, there is no "one answer", however, I would always recommend x-raying the splint as this allows a proper judgement of the severity of the injury and the state of healing. So, in summary, there is usually a related cause for the sudden development of a splint. This is usually in the form of a change in the circumstances surrounding the horse’s work or performance - starting to break in, starting to jump, change of rider (heavier or more aggressive), change of surface from soft to hard, or vice versa, and the list goes on. All it really means is that the trainer has not given enough time for the animal to adapt to the new load, so it usually is not the horse’s fault. Critically, the most important step in management is to try to analyse and work out what has happened, not to panic, determine the severity of the injury, and use proper and considered methodology in the treatment and management. I can promise you it is not the end of the world, and the splint will heal. Do not apply quack potions. I have seen enormous ulcers or skin defects as a result of some topical treatments. Conceded, the strapping of half a lemon, or Aunty Edna's aloe vera, to the splint may" make" it disappear, but I can promise you it was going to go anyway!

The benefits of equine liquid supplements from page 22 Often, the cheaper the ingredient the less-absorbable it is, meaning the horse won't receive the greatest benefit from it. A liquid supplement helps to overcome this, as the ingredients are already dissolved, meaning that the horse will be able to absorb as much of the product as possible before it passes out of the small intestine. Fibregenix Joint & Bone RLF (Rosehip Liquid Formula) Joint and bone problems can often occur from degenerative changes caused by excessive activity on hard ground or overstressing of the joints and this can compromise the quality of the synovial (joint) fluid. Joints rely on this fluid for lubrication and protection from wear and tear to help ensure the longevity of the limbs. Fibregenix Joint & Bone RLF can assist in maintaining the viscosity of synovial fluid. This revolutionary product not only contains Glucosamine, MSM, Hyaluronic acid and rosehip extract,(Rosa Canina), which all aid in nourishing the joints, but also contains a cutting-edge bone supplement of Vitamin D3
Liquid supplements are easily digested and absorbed
and Calcium Chelate. Being a liquid, Joint & Bone RLF is absorbed quickly into the horse’s blood stream, enabling the ingredients to be rapidly transported to the joints where they can start to nourish and assist with joint health. Joint & Bone RLF is ideal for horses in hard training, veterans and growing youngsters as a long term joint and bone insurance.
Fibregenix Liquid Karma The 100% natural ingredients in Fibregenix Karma include the superior, water-soluble form of magnesium which can be quickly absorbed into the blood stream. When stressed, horses can use up their available stores of magnesium and so will potentially benefit from a readily available water-soluble source. Karma also contains beneficial
L-tryptophan, an essential amino acid which is included as it is a pre-cursor for the hormone serotonin, the 'feel-good' hormone, vital to horses under stress from exercise, training and new environments. Also included are vitamin B1, Vitamin B3 and Vitamin E which are all essential for the maintenance of the nervous system. Karma is completely safe to use daily or as a single dose as required. Liquid Karma is in a palatable natural liquorice flavour. Fibregenix Karma pastes Perfect for when you are on the go, a Fibregenix Karma calming paste syringe is made with 100% natural ingredients. It's ideal for all horses and ponies and comes in a palatable liquorice flavour with each easy to use syringe containing two 15ml doses. Containing the same ingredients as Liquid Karma which help to keep the horse relaxed and settled, the Fibregenix paste syringes are non-drowsy, suitable for use when travelling/boxrest/vet/farrier or in any stressful situation. Joint supplement trials are big success Les Gilleard knows about horses and he knows what's good for them. Based in Maclean on the Clarence River, Les runs Elite Horse and Pet Products Australia, Les Gilleard which is the Technyflex distributor for northern NSW. "Prior to becoming involved with the product I trialled it with some of the horses and people that I knew," explained Les, who is president of the region's Show Horse Association. He has just finished working on the Lismore showground at the Technyflex-sponsored Northern NSW Hack championships which had been a great success. "All the trials went very well and now people are using and buying the product on a regular basis," Les said. “The initial successes were with older horses which I sometimes call 'paddock potatoes'. “They're the ones who've been ridden over the years by parents, then by their children and who are now living out their days often suffering from joint-related problems like arthritis and ringbone. "Technyflex makes such a difference to them. "'Razzie', a 28-year-old retired dressage horse, is an example of this. His ears were never pricked and he'd just hobble around the paddock eating a bit of grass. “So we gave him Technyflex, a double dose daily because of his age and condition, and now his quality of life has improved immensely." Les also cited 'Buster', a 26-year-old showjumper retired from competition. "He was so uncomfortable he wouldn't climb the hill to be with the other horses,” he said. “His owner trialled the product and now Buster has a shiny coat, his eyes are clear and he happily trots up and down the hill all day long." Les also supplies the product to competitive riders from many different equestrian disciplines.
Emily and Don Caruso competing in Dressage. Team Elite sponsors Bryanna Lutwyche and her 19-year-old grey showjumper 'Lyngara Fontana' a beautiful Andalusian/Holsteiner mare. She's from Eltham, NSW. Down in Bowral there's Emily Hughes and her warmblood dressage horse Don Caruso. “In the past she had to push him hard to go forward," said Les. "We double dosed him with Technyflex for about three weeks (he's 650 kilos) and now Emily tells me she's found his 'go forward' button."
'Courtney Parkins In Woodburn, south of Lismore, polocrosse players Courtney Parkins and Claire Wright run Ironrose ASH Stud breeding heritage stockhorses. "They're great believers in the product. Courtney had a 12-year-old which had retired with a few joint issues,”Les said. “After using the product the horse is back competing at local club level and all their horses walk out soundly after every match." Campdrafter, Abbie McConnell is another member of Team Elite.

Based at Deepwater she works with her horses as a pen rider on the enormous feed lot at Rangers Valley. "She has six horses in her team," Les said. "And several of those which are ridden in campdrafts are on Technyflex. "Abbie will shortly be competing at the Maclean draft, which is where I'll also be with Elite Horse and Pet Products. And then it's on to Tamborine Equestrian Group's International Three-Day-Event at the end of July."

Horse psychology and body language By TANJA KRAUS Observing our horse’s body language and making decisions on their psychological state is an ever-evolving subject. There is certainly nothing new about the concept, but as society becomes more interested, and we conduct more studies, and more to the point as a general public have more access to the studies, then we become more educated. That's a pretty convoluted way of saying that for many reasons, in 2019, the psychology and body language of the horse seems to be of more interest, and taken into more consideration, than in past decades, though that may not be as true as we think it is. I believe that certainly as our horses became more for our leisure, and less for the work they could perform, we may (as a general rule), have become more attuned to the mental well-being of our horses and want to learn more about how we can assess this. While I am very passionate about these subjects, both as a student and an educator, I believe that we are continually students of the horse. Horses are incredibly complex animals and whilst I am confident when I say that a horse is 'worried', 'afraid', 'anxious', 'relaxed', 'shut down', or any of the other observations I may make, I can never say this with 100 percent certainty - no one can. Unless the horse learns to speak human and turns to you and says "I am worried" then you can never be 100 percent certain. Again, let me clarify - I believe we can be 'fairly certain' or 'confident' or '90 percent sure' if you want to put a number on it, but no one can translate with 100 percent certainty on how a horse is feeling. Horses have layers, and depending on the environment may choose to disguise or hide their true mental state. As just one example, injury or fear would be considered a weakness in a wild herd situation, and therefore would be concealed to prevent an attack. And whilst we provide our horses with lovely stables, and paddocks and safety, they are deep down, simply a domesticated wild animal. Can we educate ourselves and learn how to observe the intricate details of horses expression, movement and use this information to develop our relationship, trust, and bond? Absolutely - I often laugh that Cooper and I are like an 'old married couple' as we can read each other pretty well. I personally believe that this is an element that is missing from our Page 28
human), we can fall into the trap of trying to 'make it all better'. When we start to do this, we can create anxiety in the horse, or a dominant horse because we have failed to set basic boundaries. It's not realistic, and it's not helping the horse. As an example, I have recently had a couple of ex-racehorses come to clinics. Both of them are cranky when getting groomed and when you are doing the girth up. This could be for a number of reasons - psychological association, physical discomfort, physical pain caused by ulcers or something else, habit, or a number of other things. So, on one hand, we observe this behaviour and take note and take action to further diagnose what the issue is. Of course, we don't want the horse feeling this wa, but on the other hand we set a boundary - it is not ok to bite me, or threaten to bite me while I am grooming you or doing your girth up - you can pull a face or put your ears back so I know that there is an issue, but don't threaten me. Another issue I am seeing is people thinking that they know about reading body language and making incorrect assessments. Â Continued page 20

This may cause us to realise why our training schedule has not been working, or why our training method is not working, or why our horses have some behaviour issues. Once we understand this we can look at the ways to help our horses through it, so they become more confident. Our horse's bodies reflect their mental state, not only in the subtle body language we may observe on a day to day basis, but as a whole. A horse with an unsettled mind is going to have tension in his body, and not be able to carry himself in a biomechanically sound way. I was using a colt in a starting demonstration at the recent Elevate clinic. and could see changes physically in his muscles and carriage during the clinic. So what is the point of this article? What am I truly trying to say here? Well, the first point is to share the idea of learning more about how our horses think, learn and express themselves, beyond 'ears back' or 'tail swishing'. Did you know that a horse can swish its tail in multiple ways and each one will be for a different reason? As we become more mindful of HORSEMANSHIPFORPERFORMANCE.COM observing our horse's body lan-

The Horse Report
Understanding the fundamental needs of the horse From page 18 Sometimes this can be as simple as a person thinking the horse is ok with something when he isn't, or that the horse is anxious when he isn't or to the more troublesome assessment of 'this horse is fine to ride' when he is not. As you can imagine this can result in tragic consequences. The second element to body language and psychology is understanding that the fundamental need of the horse, (and the human) is staying safe. This is achieved firstly through setting boundaries. No matter what our horse's motivation in their behavior, our most important role is to set boundaries within the relationship, so the horse knows where he stands. For example, at the recent Elevate clinic in Queensland, I was doing a colt starting demonstration with a young horse that had been started 12 months ago, turned out for six months, then a rider got on him and he panicked, reared, bucked and she came off, then he was turned out for another six months. So the first day of the demonstration, he is in a new location, worried, calling out, can't stand still, anxious - he was a kite on that first day. So the first thing I did was establish boundaries. I probably have more empathy than most but I also understand that the horse cannot feel safe without boundaries being set. If he knows what he is supposed to be doing and where he is to be standing or walking etc, then he can look to me. Dare I say he can look to me as a leader - leadership is not a dirty word. Once the horse can not only acknowledge that I exist but that I actually know what I am doing, then he can start to relax and feel comfortable. Now I know that he is running over the top of me, pulling on the lead, calling out, etc all out of anxiety and I have empathy for that.
What isn't going to work is meeting that energy with a treat, a kiss, and a cuddle, that is not what is going to help the horse feel safe. What does make him feel safe is you saying 'I've got this' 'walking over me or pushing on me is not acceptable' 'here are your boundaries' 'let me help you'. I guess the simple way of saying this is 'just because you are in an anxiety fueled situation, and you are scared, that doesn't mean you can compromise my safety or treat me like shit'. If you don't have respect for yourself, how can you expect your horse to have respect for you? If empathy is changing your approach to horses, you must question why? I approach every horse with empathy and a 'let me help you' attitude. If only some horses deserve empathy and others don't, how am I treating others? Another example; I have three horses. One has been abused and is fearful. One has had inconsistency from people and is now anxious, the other has learned that he can push people around. I take them by the lead one after the other. All of them push on me. The first is fear aggressive. The second simply doesn't know I exist because they are looking for the herd, the third can see me but doesn't respect me and so pushes on my space. I have empathy for all three horses equally - it is the humans that have let all three of these horses down. Do I feel more 'sorry' for the abused horse? No. Sympathy has no business in the arena. Empathy, yes. Sympathy no. Sympathy is not going to help me, help the horse move forward. Step one is I set boundaries. Same step for every horse - nothing changes. I respect you, you respect me. Set the ground rules so they know where they stand. Step 2. Build trust. This is where
the approach may change. The fearful horse is going to need confidence building. The anxious horse is going to need consistency in language, the dominant horse is going to need firm but fair approach. But step one is always the same set boundaries. Sometimes humans have an issue with this as we have an idea in our mind of how we 'set boundaries' and some of the examples we have seen may
have been an approach that was not necessary. How you set the boundaries is up to you, but make sure you are setting boundaries. To sum up what I am trying to say is; Learn as much as you can about equine body language and psychology. Our training should always come from a place of empathy Boundaries are what makes your horse feel safe.

The Horse Report
Endurance ride delivers, despite wet weather More than 150 riders took to the Imbil State Forest at Stirling's Crossing Equestrian Complex participating in multiple rides, including the 160km ride which was the last opportunity in Queensland to qualify for the prestigious 2019 Tom Quilty Gold Cup. Matthew Sample, owner of the equestrian complex, said the event was a great success and provided a good opportunity for the team to test their plans for the world famous Tom Quilty endurance challenge which will be held at the complex in July this year. "Riders aged from 11 to 73 years of age entered the four events offered and an overall completion rate of 71 per cent was a great achievement given the weather conditions and a track made more challenging due to the weather," Mr Sample said. "The 160km event resulted in 15 additional riders qualifying to enter the 2019 Tom Quilty Gold Cup which is expected to attract over 350 riders to the complex." Stirling's Crossing Endurance Club President Kim Moir said the feedback had been very positive from riders who took to the tracks. "The rain that fell in the area over the two weeks prior to this event, caused us to review the course offered," Ms Moir said. "The first two legs of the 160km and 120km, and the total course for the 80km ride were close to what will be offered at the 2019 Tom Quilty Gold Cup which is a 160km ride. “We were very happy with the number of entries and the completion rates. “From 186 nominations, 137 horses and riders completed their events, giving an overall

completions rate of 71 per cent. That is great given the conditions. "Sixteen riders completed the 160 km ride and for 15 of those, this meant qualification for the 2019 Tom Quilty Gold Cup. “This included five junior riders who have now qualified to enter the 160km ride which will set off at midnight on 12 July with 24 hours to complete. "We think this Tom Quilty may well be the biggest ride hosted in the 54-year history of the event. “This will be the first time the Tom Quilty is hosted in Imbil and we expect to have riders travelling from all corners of Australia, and overseas, to compete." THE AUSTRALIAN HUNTER HORSE ASSOC The Australian Hunter Horse Association will soon be know as the Australian Hunter and Show Horse Association. AHHA has listened to it's members wanting the Association to grow and provide more opportunities for their members. The need to grow and evolve has led them to include new "categories" and cater for the Show Horse, Show Hunter and Hunter Horse. More shows in Australia are adding the member only classes to their programs giving members a lot more for their membership. Talking of membership another incentive the committee is offering is that for everyone who has become a financial member since 1st January 2019, your membership period will be extended until 30th June, 2020 Something new that the association wishes to announce is that after two years of negotiations with the National Pony Society and several other connections they have secured an international exchange program. Four girls who are financial members of AHHA will be representing the association and Australia and competing in the United Kingdom in July / August 2019. The committee has dedicated time and energy and effort into making this a reality have secured some great sponsors so that these girls get to experience and bring home a wealth of knowledge to share with us and future generations. The Association had a high number of applicants (more than 30) and the quality was amazing making the selection process a difficult one but congratulations must go to this years' Tri Nations Australian team members Kasey Currall, Gracie Goodyer, Sophie Walker and Kayla Moore. Travelling with the girls on this venture will be pony club chief instructor Shiralee Adams who comes with decades of knowledge and experience in educating horsemanship involving children. Shiralee will be the girls’ 'away from home' mum. President Charles Dunkley will also be accompanying the girls on this trip to ensure full safety and protocol on behalf of the Association is complied with. The team’s itinerary includes 10 days of showing and going for gold against teams from the UK and New Zealand, the Committee has picked a team of a well-versed experience base, but most of all they will be the Young Ambassadors for the Association and it's members.

The Horse Report
Strong interest in hosting FEI World Champs 2022 Supplied by FEI A total of 20 countries on four different continents – Europe, North and South America and Asia – have submitted expressions of interest to host the FEI World Championships 2022, with representatives from over 30 different venues attending a workshop for potential host cities in Lausanne. Participants at the interactive workshop, which is a first for the FEI, were briefed on the benefits of hosting FEI world championships, including the economic impact on the host city and country, operational requirements, commercial opportunities, broadcast media rights and event promotion, support from the FEI’s team of experts across key functional areas, and the bidding process itself. “It is extremely encouraging to have received so many expressions of interest to host the FEI world championships 2022 and to have had the opportunity to welcome potential bidders to Lausanne for today’s workshop”, FEI President Ingmar De Vos said. “We hope that this new collaborative approach, in line with the IOC’s New Norm and based on transparency, cost-effectiveness and sustainability, will result in solid formal bids, but the proof of the pudding is in the eating. “Our sport has grown so much that an all-discipline FEI World Equestrian Games has become too big for many venues to host. “By opening up the bidding process for 2022 to single and multi-discipline bids, and not excluding a full Games, we believe that we have created a more enticing formula and the high level of expressions of interest suggests that we are on the right track.”
Following the workshop, which was attended by more than 70 delegates, the process now enters the Candidate Phase. A shortlist of candidates will then be drawn up by the end of June, with a draft host agreement provided to each of the shortlisted candidates. Deadline for receipt of host agreements signed by both the candidate and relevant National Federation is mid-September, with candidates potentially being asked to present their bids to the FEI Evaluation Commission over the following month. Final evaluation of all shortlisted bids will be completed by the end of October, with recommendations provided to the FEI Board prior to allocation at the in-person Board meeting in Moscow (RUS) in mid-November 2019. History of FEI World Championships The FEI World Championships have a long heritage, dating back to 1953 when the first Jumping Championships were held in Paris (FRA). The inaugural World Championships in Dressage and Eventing were both staged in 1966, with Dressage in Bern (SUI) and Eventing at Burghley (GBR). Other FEI-governed disci-
plines followed, with the first Driving World Championships held in Münster (GER) in 1972, Vaulting in Bulle (SUI) in 1986 and Endurance at Pratoni del Vivaro (ITA) in 1986. Reining crowned its first world champions as part of the 2002 edition of the FEI World Equestrian Games™ 2002 in Jerez de la Frontera (ESP). Four years later, Para Driving world championships were hosted in Hellendoorn (NED), with Hartpury (GBR) staging the first Para Dressage world championships in 2007. In 1990, world championships in each of the FEI disciplines were combined and the FEI World Equestrian Games™ were born in Stockholm (SWE) in 1990. Since then the Games have been staged in The Hague (NED) in 1994, Rome (ITA) in 1998, Jerez (ESP) in 2002, Aachen (GER) in 2006, Kentucky (USA) in 2010, Normandy (FRA) in 2014 and in Tryon, North Carolina (USA) last year. Despite having two previous bidding rounds for the FEI World Equestrian Games™ 2022, no realistic bids were received and, as a result, the FEI Board last November unanimously approved the opening of a bidding process for individual world championships in all disciplines for 2022, with preference being given to multi-discipline bids. It was agreed that world championships for Dressage and Para Dressage should ideally be combined, and bids to host the full seven-discipline FEI World Equestrian Games™ will also be considered. The world championships 2022 in the Olympic and Paralympic disciplines will serve as qualifiers for the Paris 2024 Games.

The Horse Report
Lifeskills program " HHH received its 3rd business award in Feb this year for " Youth and Family Services " It has been wonderful to see the program grow across different states and receive the great feedback from Youth services in relation to disengaged young people reengaging back into school or study. The program covers communication skills, body language, emotional regulation and personality education all being taught through professional horsemanship groundskills in small groups , not unlike mini horsemanship clinics! It is not Equine Therapy, it is a Lifeskills program to help prepare young people transition to a positive future. All students attend with their own case worker or counsellor, it is designed to open doors of communication for all those involved with the young people attending. Workbooks are provided to case workers so they can reinforce the techniques taught through the courses. Licensees all receive extensive training with Sue Spence and must have a high level of natural horsemanship ground skills, excellent communication skills and ideal facilities to present the program for their local communities. Media launches with each opening are also provided with many Youth Services booking as soon a new center opens. Licensees become an important well respected role model in their communities liaising with all youth and family services. The opportunity to present the program at a corporate level is also available. Please see the website www.horseshelpinghumansaustralia.com or email suespence101@gmail.com for further information. "

Gem Park Royalty Price: $ 12,000. Neg 13.0 hh Black Gelding Reg: Part Welsh | Arabian Riding Pony | EA and SHC Sire: Beckworth Rising Shadow Dam: Langteee Memories A very sad sale of a much loved pony who is sadly outgrown. Rebel has been a total pleasure to own he has been part of our family for five years. As you can see he is really beautiful and made for the show ring however Dressage is our interest so that’s where his career has predominantly focused. He is competing successfully at Novice always placing and scoring in the 65% range to many placings to list. He represented WA at the 2018 National Interschool’s in Dressage and Showhorse we drove him over to Victoria and he travelled beautifully finishing top 10 in both his dressage tests. Rebel is also part of the EWA 2019 rising stars team. We also attend pony club and loves to jump he has competed in a couple of ODE’s as well he really is a great allrounder. Although well-educated I wouldn’t class him as a beginners pony he is extremely safe however but would be best suited to a competent confident child going on to a 2nd pony. We are looking for an amazing home for Rebel many more photos and video available on request. Rebel will be sold with his double bridle and some show rugs. Contact: Kirsten Hawkins Ph: 0419 928 800

His Beautiful... his Black... his jack and his ready to take the show world by storm. This pony has everything it takes to make a national winning hunter pony just needs a rider. I have recently taken on a hack for myself and unfortunately come to the realization that I can’t do both with work and a baby. Jack is extremely well put together, stunning movement, a beautiful nature and is a pleasure to have around. He is green broken but isn’t bothered by much. Been ridden with other horses, around machinery and other livestock. very hard sale as I know this boy has so much potential but I just can’t give him the time he needs. Arcadian Patriot Pat the Pony Price: $ 15,000. 11.3 hh Grey Gelding Reg: Welsh Mountain Pony Sire: Imperial Nirvana Dam: Imperial Parfait A highly competitive registered true hunter pony with great bloodlines. Wonderful opportunity to purchase a kind quality gelding. Harry is accepted into RMS easily qualifying at ag shows. Requires minimal work and would make a wonderful rider/turnout class mount.
Stunning Galloway Mare Scarlett has the most beautiful laid back temperament. The easiest mare to have in the stables. Very trainable. Champions and Supremes in hand and ridden. Easy to ride at events and good on trails. Ridden by children.
Harry is a controlled windsucker, this does not affect his weight in anyway. He measures 16.2h and is the perfect horse for a young rider to step up onto. His last dressage outing he received scores over 65% his lateral work is well established.
Suitable for showing, pony dressage, pleasure, pony club. Recently competed in her first dressage competition scoring 66% with room for improvement. Scarlett has started lateral movements. Lots more photos and Video available upon request.

She is suited to an experienced show home who wants to be competitive at the top. Inspection will not disappoint. Genuine enquires only please as this is a very hard sale and I’m only contemplating this due to the fact my daughter just isn’t that into showing and Daisy is just way too good to sit in the paddock. Prada is easy mare to perform and show. - 2017 as a 2yr old - reserve champion led ASH mare/filly Canberra Royal - 2018 as a 3yr old at Sydney Royal, 3rd led ASH filly , 3rd working led, 5th ASH hack , and champion ANSA Youngstock - 2017/2018 show season, champion led ash, ANSA and galloway and supreme Exhibit of show. Under saddle, champion ASH hack and working, galloway hunter and supreme Ridden ASH exhibits. Prada has solid foundation under her and is forward moving, with correct movement. Is used to all farm machinery, bikes, dogs, stockwhips, fireworks, and musters cattle and sheep regularly. This spring I decided to put Prada to Bluff Downs Bega, I have had great success with his progeny at royal, state and national level. They all have great temperaments, correct conformation, and trainable minds. It was my intention to retain Prada and progeny, but due to current conditions I have had to make the hard decision to place her on the market. Rarely does a young quality performed and proven mare come onto the market.
