Shane Rose cleared by review panel

By EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA

Equestrian Australia has concluded its review following public concerns being raised regarding three-time Olympian Shane Rose.

As is standard practice for Equestrian Australia, Mr Rose was stood down from competition while the review took place.

The Equestrian Australia Review Panel met recently and found that Mr Rose did not breach the code of conduct at Wallaby Hill on 11 February.

The Panel took into account the community event that Mr Rose was competing at, and that Mr Rose had already made a public apology. The following recommendations were handed down:

- For Equestrian Australia to work with clubs and stakeholders to assess minimum dress standards for future events.

- For Equestrian Australia to review the education modules for the High Performance program to ensure they’re fit for purpose.

Equestrian Australian CEO Darren Gocher said Equestrian Australia has an obligation to look into any concerns of this nature that comes from the community.

“Having now thoroughly reviewed the incident and spoken to relevant

parties, Equestrian Australia has confirmed that there was no breach of the code of conduct by Shane Rose,” Mr Gocher said. “We take the recommendations on board and will move quickly to ensure the relevant actions are taken.

“Our sport is made up of wonderful individuals and we have plenty to look forward to in

the year ahead.

“Shane has reflected on the incident, has apologised and understands the high standards expected of everyone involved in our High Performance program.

“With the matter now resolved, Shane and his teammates are looking forward to focusing their attention on qualifying for Paris.”

Prebiotics and Probiotics for horse health

As horse owners, we enjoy our horses being well-cared for; not treated as pampered pets but receiving the best of everything - limited only by the size of our piggy-bank.

Regardless of whether a horse is a paddock ornament, trail hack or four-star competitor, most owners enjoy, or dream of having, that luxury float, McMansion stables, beautiful green pasture, the latest health equipment, brand name rugs and matching gear for training and competing. While catering for the physical comforts of our horses is fun, it is imperative that the horse’s health is managed sensibly.

Prebiotics Probiotics and how they can benefit your horse’s health

Nutritional formulas are very popular with horse owners and products which aid digestion are becoming almost as widely used as joint supplements.

This is not surprising considering the sensitivity of the equine digestive system and the fact the horse is so reliant on the way the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) functions. Although sampling and testing a range of products to find what best works with your horse is often necessary, pro and prebiotics are two nutritional supplements that should have a priority on the equine care list.

The horse’s digestive system is not the most functional.

Many nutritionists, veterinarians, health experts and researchers believe that the health of the GI improves many aspects of health in the horse.

Wind and colic, digestion, utilisation and absorption of nutrients, assists in maintenance of immune function and protecting the horse against diarrhoea-causing organisms such as salmonella.

Ahealthy gastrointestinal tract can also reduce the risk of laminitis.

There are a number of products on the market that contain digestive enzymes, including specific herbs such as slippery elm, Aloe Vera and marshmallow root. Prebiotics and Probiotics are the most commonly used ingredients in digestive products but whilst their names are similar they are two entirely different types and have actions unique to each form.

PROBIOTICS

To put it simply probiotics are ‘good’ microbes and bacteria.

Fermentation and the break down of grass, hay and other forms of feed are

reliant on an excellent GI function; therefore the microbes and bacteria found in probiotics are essential for this to occur. The fermentation process results in the production of volatile fatty acids that provide an important energy source for the horse.

The microbes also produce B vitamins and other nutrients, which are of high importance to the overall health and well-being of the horse.

Most importantly the ‘good’microbes— yeasts, bacteria, protozoa, and fungi— keep the ‘bad’microbes (such as Salmonella and Clostridium difficile) from overpopulating the intestines, which may then cause diarrhea and illness.

Good microbes and bacteria benefit gut health

PREBIOTICS

Prebiotics are the foods that feed these good microbes and bacteria.

They are food ingredients that stimulate production or activity of the bacteria that live in the horse’s gastrointestinal tract.

Your horse does not digest these food ingredients; they are actually ‘fed’to the good bugs, and are most commonly carbohydrates— long chains of sugar molecules bound together.

Some of the most common prebiotics used in equine supplements include fructooligosaccharides, xylooligosaccharides, polydextrose, mannooligosaccharides (MOS), galactooligosaccharides, pectin, and psyllium.

These prebiotics are digested by the ‘good’microorganisms in the horse’s digestive system to increase their numbers or activity.

Two of the best known ‘good’bacteria are Bifidobacterium bifidum and Lactobacillus acidophilus.

Probiotics are the live microorganisms themselves; if administered at sufficient levels, these microorganisms present a health benefit for the horse.

To be considered a probiotic, the bacteria included in the supplement must be alive when administered and contain a taxo-

nomically defined microbe(s), including genus, species, and strain; and be safe for the intended use.

Most equine probiotics include Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species of bacteria and/or the yeast Saccharomyces boulardii.

Pre - and Probiotics benefit horses in many ways and are used by horse owners and equine health practitioners principally for GI related conditions (i.e. diarrhoea), to encourage the growth of the good microbes, and to reduce the risk of invasion and growth of disease-causing bacteria.

It is quite well-known that antibiotic administration, stress, transport, abrupt

dietary changes, and Clostridium spp. or Salmonella spp. infections can potentially alter the normal microbe population in a horse’s large intestine.

Horse owners often administer prebiotics and/or probiotics to horses that are being treated with antibiotics, have diarrhoea, are off their feed, are about to travel or are experiencing a stressful event.

The more sophisticated and complex probiotics and prebiotics are only found in the human health industry.

My personal advice is to always keep some form of pro and prebiotics on hand in the fridge and to use them when required, but also use them as a preventative measure.

Tips & tricks for keeping horses cool

To keep you horse cool during the day, ensure there is good shade and airflow available throughout the day, whether natural or manufactured.

Tarps and shade sails can offer respitewhether strung up or draped. If the horses are in stables or barns, use misters or fans. Work as early in the day as possible or later in the evening if the temperature has dropped.

After work, or if the horse is hot in the paddock, hose down with cool water paying particular attention to the jugular veins in the neck and the saphenous veins on the inside of the hindlegs.

Always scrape your horse down after hosing as even a light coating of water acts as an insulator to retain body heat.

Repeat this if necessary.

Shade, hosing then scraping, with a breeze or a fan reduces core temperature quickly. Offer fresh cool water and water containing electrolytes. Let them choose which they prefer.

Days when humidity is high are even worse as humidity keeps the sweat from evaporating so the horse's natural cooling system can't be effective.

Overweight horses have a harder time dealing with high temperatures and humidity as added body fat acts as insulation.

If you can't avoid working or competing in high temperatures do all of the above. Give homeopathic Glonoine to clear any head con-

gestion bought on by heat and exertion. Hand walk for 15 minutes to stop muscle cramping.

WHAT NOT TO DO:

Rugs have their place but it is not on a horse on hot or humid days. The rug as acts as an insulator, trapping the heat and exacerbating the situation.

The horse's core temperature increases and the heat cannot escape or sweat evaporate (horses prefer to be naked).

Do not leave the horse sweating under a rug. Sweat serves an important purpose for both horses and humans - as the moisture of the sweat evaporates, and the skin cools.

WHAT IS HEAT STRESS?

Know the signs:

* Rapid shallow respiration, flared nostrils

* Look of anxiety

* Confusion

* High temperature

* High Heart Rate

* Excess sweating or no sweating

* Dehydration - do pinch test*

* Lack of coordination

* Trembling

* Pinch the skin (normally on the neck although shoulder is also recommended), if it springs back to flat rapidly, there is no problem. But if it is slow to restore (more than 3 seconds), your horse may be dehydrated. In extreme cases call the vet.

For homeopathic treatment give homeopathic Aconite 6c. and Glonoine 6c. to reduce above symptoms - repeat dose every 15 minutes. The homeopathics will not interact with any veterinary treatments which may be given. Stop dosing immediately when the horse shows improvement.

While waiting, use iced water, paying particular attention to the jugular vein in neck, the saphenous veins on the inside of the hind legs, behind the ears and face.

Hose - scrape down - fan, repeat these steps every 15 minutes until vital signs are normal and he's cool to touch between the front legs. Hand walk for 15 minutes to minimise muscle cramping then put in the shade with a breeze, mister or fan.

Check frequently. Severe heat stress can lead to: Muscle cramping, Colic, Diarrhoea, Collapse - shock and death

Useful herbal teas to make and give the horses in hot weather are:

Lemon Balm, Chamomile, Elder Flower, Ginger, Peppermint

These can be added to water buckets and offered as an option.

These teas all have diaphoretic properties encouraging sweat, the sweat evaporates enabling the body's natural cooling system to be effective.

The amount of food your horse requires is determined by his or her size (weight), workload, age, breeding status and whether you are aiming for weight loss, maintenance or gain.

This guide outlines the five essential steps you need to follow to work out how much to feed your horse.

1. Measure or estimate your horse's weight.

2. Determine the Body Condition Score (BCS) to decide whether you want to help him/her gain, lose or stay the same weight.

3. Define your horse's workload.

4. Calculate total daily intake requirement.

5. Match calories from forage, hard feeds and supplements to your horse's daily energy requirements.

1. Measure or estimate body weight (BW) There are various methods to estimate your horse's body weight:

* Weight tapes - these measure 'heart girth' and can be surprisingly accurate, especially for mature 'TB-shaped' horses.

* Formula Method:

Horse Weight (kg)=[heart girth(cm) 2 x body length(cm)] / (11,880 cm3) where length is defined as "measuring from the point of shoulder to the point of buttock" and "heart girth" is the measurement around the body of the horse level with where the girth sits.

* Use your search engine to explore online horse weight calculators based on these formulae which are free to use.

* Livestock scales to weigh your horse are the ultimate answer to the question "What does my horse weigh?" If you have access to a vehicle weigh bridge, weighing your truck or car and float with the horse on-board and subtracting the weight of the vehicles without the horse is another method for weighing an animal as large as a horse.

2. Determine Body Condition Score (BCS)

Body Condition Scoring is a useful tool for monitoring the balance between dietary energy (calories consumed) compared to the amount of energy your horse is using (for body maintenance, keeping warm, working, etc). There are various body scoring systems

available, ranging from five point to nine point scales. They all rely on estimating body fat using a combination of visual assessment and feeling the horse.

It is recommended that all horse owners become proficient in using a BSC system so that you always know whether your horse is gaining, losing or maintaining weight.

To feed your horse correctly, at any point in time you need to accurately answer the following question:

"Does your horse need to lose, gain or maintain bodyweight?"

Use your web browser to look for pictures and information on the nine point Henneke horse body condition scoring system which is probably more user-friendly than the traditional five point scales.

The University of Minnesota has prepared an excellent teaching video to demonstrate how to look, feel and calculate your horse's Henneke BCS which is available on YouTube.

3. Define Workload

The NRC (National Research Council) defines weekly workloads in the publication 'Nutrient Requirements of Horses' to help owners and nutritionists ensure that horses are fed appropriately, according to their daily nutritional needs for their work level. These workload levels are summarised as:

Maintenance

Ahorse not being ridden or lunged can be defined as a horse at 'maintenance.' You might sometimes see this referred to as being at 'rest' or 'spelling'.

Some nutritionists even define whether the unworked horse has a high or low level of activity (depending on the paddock size and temperament of the horse).

Light Work

Ahorse in light work performs 1 - 3 hours per week: 40% walk, 50% trot, 10% canter with an average heart rate of 80 beats per minute (bpm) over the ride.

Light work could include horses used for recreational (trail or pleasure) riding, working ponies, horses during the early stages of training or beginning breaking in or show horses given occasional work.

Moderate Work

Ahorse in moderate work is performs 3 - 5 hours per week: 30% walk, 55% trot, 10% canter, 5% low jumps or other skill work with an average heart rate of 90 bpm over each ride.

This typically includes horses used for more regular recreational (trail) riding, beginning training/breaking, show horses, dressage, campdraft, polo or polocrosse, stock work, cutting horses, showjumpers and low level eventers.

Hard Work

Hard (or Heavy) work is defined when a horse performs 4-5 hours per week: 20% walk, 50% trot, 10% canter, 15% gallop, jumping or other skill work with an average heart rate of 110 bpm over the session. Hard working horses may be performing stock work, polo, high level dressage or show jumping, medium level eventing, race training.

Very Heavy Work

Very Heavy (or Intense) work is performed by racehorses, elite 3 day eventers and endurance horses.

Their work varies - it can be 1 hour per week speed work or 6 - 12 hours per week of slow work.

Their average heart beat will be in the range 110 - 150 bpm.

Once you have identified how hard your horse works, you can use this information to calculate how much food (total intake) is needed each day, and the amount of hard feed and supplements required to provide enough energy (calories), protein, vitamins and minerals.

4. Calculate Daily Intake Requirement (RDI)

The table below is a guide to estimating how much your horse needs to eat each day. Feed is measured by its Dry Matter (DM) content which is how much the feed weighs after all water content is removed.

As a rule of thumb, hay is around 80% DM, hard feeds 90% DM, powdered supplements 95 - 99% DM compared to grass which can range from as little as 20 or 30% DM when lush and leafy, to 80% or more when mature and dry.

The daily dry matter intake will vary according to workload, horse preference for the forage source, and whether the horse needs to be restricted for weight loss.

Aim to keep the percentage roughage as high as possible, whilst giving the horse its recommended daily intake and providing enough calories to fuel work and sustain a healthy body condition score.

All horses, including racehorses in very heavy work, require at least 1% of their bodyweight in roughage every day for good gut health

5. Match Calories Fed to Digestible Energy (DE) Requirement

Many horses (especially ponies, easy keepers and horses at rest or in light work) consume all the calories they need from their forage source.

Hard keepers, breeding, growing and hardworking horses often need a concentrate feed to provide enough calories to maintain body condition or gain weight.

The amount of concentrate (hard feed) required depends on:

* Workload

* Calorie content of the forage

* Calorie content of the hard feed

* Whether weight loss, gain or maintenance is required

* Individual horse metabolism.

The icing on the cake to perfect any horse diet are the vitamin, mineral, protein and omega-3 supplements needed to overcome deficiencies and create a balanced diet. Whilst the theory of calculating how much

feed your horse needs is fairly straight forward, it can be quite tricky in practice. For example, it takes experience to estimate how much grass a horse is actually consuming whilst grazing.

The abundance and quality of pasture come into consideration, along with the size of the paddock, stocking density, season and recent rainfall events.

“BYE BYE FLY”

QUEENSLAND ITCH, SWEET ITCH, SUMMER ECZEMA and EQUINE

ALLERGIC DERMATITIS are names for distressing skin conditions which affects horses in spring and summer months throughout Australia and around the world.

The usual cause is a hypersensitivity to the bites of flies (in particular sand flies or midges).

While the bite of the flies are an irritation, some horses develop sensitivity to the bite and will rub themselves so much that they cause injury to their skin.

Research shows the cause is an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the saliva of the midges (as with humans).

Not only that, but once or twice a day, stable lies come to the horse, feed vigorously for a minute or two, and then return to the shade to digest their food. These bites can cause intense irritation in some horses. The bites appear as small raised lumps with a central scab.

The effects on the horses can be dramatic. They suffer intense pruritus (itchiness) on the mane, tail, face, ears and back, resulting in biting, rubbing, hair loss, self-trauma and a change of temperament. They become miserable and irritable.

KURITCH has been specially formulated to help assist this problem effectively, in a number of ways:

Firstly, it repels the biting insects using the combination of the natural repellent “Citronella Oil” and a highly effective repellent “DEET”. Secondly, it soothes the irritated areas thus relieving the horse from biting and rubbing, which in turn allows the normal healing process to begin.

Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies.

The Horse Report Too much salt might be killing gut bacteria

The last few weeks has seen extreme weather conditions for us in Australia. Some days have been 37 degrees C (99 F) others 40 degrees celsius or higher (104 F +) To make things worse, the nights don’t cool down, with some nights remaining over 26 degrees C (79 F).

On more than one occasion I have checked temperatures between midnight and 3 am and it has been 30 degrees or more in the middle of the night!

It is HOT!!!

My horses are crusted in salt from continuous sweating. I took pity on them today and instead of having them out grazing with muzzles on they have hay in their hay pillows so they can at least stay in the shade.

But back to salt. I normally just let my horses eat salt free choice. Their balancer pellet gives them about 5 grams of salt per day and the rest of what they need they eat as loose rock salt.

BUT, the last couple of weeks I have been adding it to their feeds so I know they are getting enough to keep sweating. If horses run low on sodium or chloride they can’t sweat, and that, in these conditions is lifethreateningly dangerous.

There is a trend at the moment though for people to add large amounts of salt to their horse’s daily feeds, despite actual requirements or what may be coming from the rest of their diet.

Blanket recommendations like ‘add 10 grams of salt per 100 kg of bodyweight’seem to be commonplace, yet don’t seem to take into account a horse’s specific situation.

Take Poet’s diet for example, shown in the graph below. If I add 10 g/100 kg of BW to his diet his sodium intake is well over 200% of what he needs. In these extreme conditions this may well be accurate, but once it cools off a little this is way more sodium than he needs.

While I was out just now giving them hay I had the thought ‘I wonder what this excessive salt might be doing to the bacteria in their gut’??

Salt is, after all one of the best known and most widely used anti-bacterial agents in the world.

So I did a little research… and while not much came up, there is a recent paper, published in ‘Nature’(i.e. one of the most reputable journals in the world, so we can trust it) showing that in both mice and men adding more salt than normal to a diet affected the gut bacterial populations, in some cases it entirely wiped out certain strains of bacteria! Eek!

What is really interesting (from a human perspective) is that the researchers were then able to link those shifts in gut bacteria to high blood pressure, which may help to explain (the as yet poorly understood) link between high salt diets and hypertension. Back to your horses though… feeding excessive salt is unlikely to have any benefit and may be negatively affecting the good bacteria in your horse’s gut.

So when using FeedXL, just meet your horse’s requirement for sodium with salt that is added to the diet. Then leave free choice salt (preferably as easy to eat loose rock salt) out so they can top up any extra requirement they may have. The paper is here if anyone would like to read it in more detail:

Olivia Hamood manages the family business, 'Glen Haven Park,' in QLD. She has competed across Europe and represented Australia in a Nations Cup Team in Portugal. In 2021 she was the Australian Senior showjumping Champion and in 2022 winner of the Caboolture World Cup on her horse, Jane Fonda.

Dan Steers grew up in Western Australia. In 2007 Dan won the ACAWestern Australian Reserve Champion Open Campdraft rider, multiple campdrafts and Stock horse futurities.

He conducts regular horsemanship clinics and is well respected for his talent in the entertainment arena.

In 2008 Dan joined his good friend Dan James at El Caballo Spanish Horse Centre where they started performing as “The Dan & Dan Show” each weekend, and thus “Double Dan Horsemanship” was born.

Under the Double Dan Horsemanship banner they travel Australia and more recently the USAteaching, educating and competing.

Brett Parbery has been professionally riding, training and coaching dressage since 2000 with championship titles running into the dozens. The pinnacle of his achievements was being at the World Equestrian Games in 2010, where he came 9th individually which is the highest rank for an Australian dressage rider during the World Championships.

In 2018 he represented Australia as well during the World Equestrian Games in Tryon.

In 2010 he qualified for the World Cup Finals in S-Hertogenbosch and finished 10th.

Brett is unmatched when he combines his expertise with passion and skill as an educator.

Building confidence through responsibility

Alarge part of building confidence and partnership in our horses, is developing their responsibilities.

Just like a growing child takes on responsibilities as they grow, to prepare them for adulthood, so to do our horses.

The horse (pictured right) holds responsibility by being saddled at liberty and lining up to the mounting block.

Performing these simple tasks at liberty also allows her to show me ‘I’m not ok’or ‘I’m uncomfortable’by walking away - this gives me vital information on where she needs support, which helps me not go too fast for the individual horses.

When I’m working with horses I am creating the thinking horse - a problem solver; a thinker; a conversationalist.

Interactive horses are confident and willing to think before they react.

Shifting your perspective can help you enjoy your horse time more.

Recently we we’re doing a round table bump-in at a recent clinic, and one of the students was talking about a shift in perspective which allowed her to be not only ‘ok’with a unexpected moment, but to actually consider it beneficial.

She was preparing to head to the clinic, and her horse was being a little difficult catch. She said “I walked out and he kind of ran off, but we have been working on him cantering circles around me, with me doing as little as possible, so I just owned him running off and turned it into a canter circle’. This meant they got to work on canter circles, the shift allowed the horse to switch into training mode on his own, and, when she called him off the circle, he came right in, meaning he didn’t get to practice “running away”.

It’s a win for everyone.

When a horse doesn’t want to be caught, it often leads to two outcomes; We may have chased the horse (oh, you want to run, then run) which uses punishment as a training method.

This of course works, but punishment doesn’t really make anyone feel good.

Or we get annoyed, a start trying to trap or catch the horse, which can make a game out of it - fun for the horse, but not for the owner.

The shift in perspective makes it beneficial for everyone.

The OPPmethod is built of eight relaxation techniques that teach horses how to consciously recognise, and manage, common tension patterns that arise in their body.

Tension in horses is often a physical and emotional response to the most common tension triggers for horses such as elevated heart rate, anticipation, restrictions of movement, disturbed breathing patterns (due to panic and anxiety) just to name a few.

Optimal Performance Program is an all encompassing training where the horse learns to consciously relax directly before the activity and maintain or deepen their relaxed state during and after each phase of performance. Importantly, once the horse knows the Optimal Performance Program they own it. They use it consistently, not just during training but also downtime on the paddock, within their herd dynamics, sharing feed times and so on. It has been described by many as the 'missing link' in their horseman-ship journey and is available to all.

and from performance horses to equine companions - deserves to learn how to relax and to choose this skill when the need arises.

Relax That Stomach

Relax That Stomach is the cornerstone technique that kick starts the full OPPtraining. This is the pivotal foundation technique for all horses as it deals with the major tension networks held around anticipation. If you consider the sheer size of the digestive tract of the horse in its entirety, you can start to envisage how the impact of deeply held tensions of the smooth muscles and internal structures can play out and disrupt the function of multiple body systems.

Ulcers, colic, aggression at feed time are obvious signs of stomach tension, but the list is vast and also includes itchy skin through to behavioural and performance issues eg separation anxiety.

This technique is vital for addressing these persistent tensions and forms the major healing and rehab structure of the One Horse Life methodology hence why it is given its own focus

Residual Tension Release Therapy

RTRT provides a continuation under the banner of conscious muscle relaxation training however, this technique differs in that it is provided to the horse via the bit and through the connection to the trainer's own body. This method is unlike anything you or your horse will have experienced before. It is a great tool for introducing the bit to young horses, as well as rehabbing bit trauma for others and it literally purifies the gaits from residual tension. It is done at standstill initially, then can be moved to a long rein version and ultimately be incorporated into ridden work under saddle.

Tasmanian Yearling Sale at Quercus Park

Abeautifully presented colt by Needs Further sold for $145,000 and tops the 2024 Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling Sale at Quercus Park.

One of two six figure sellers on the day, the colt presented as Lot 5 was knocked down the bid of Brett Howard and purchased by his Randwick Bloodstock Agency in conjunction with Denise Martin's Star Thoroughbreds.

Presented by Armidale Stud, the colt is from the good eight time winner Arenzano and is a half brother to Star's four time winner Emily.

"As you know Denise (Martin) is from Tasmania and she is a huge supporter of the industry - she likes to buy a few yearlings each year and also sends runners down from the mainland and they're all trained by her brother- in- law Barry Campbell," Howard said.

"Star have had great success buying here. Barry, Denise and their owners are happy to keep supporting the Tasmanian industry and coming back here and buying more yearlings."

"I suppose you can say we've got some inside information," Howard pointed out.

"We purchased the three-yearold full brother to him called Durazzo and he's had three trials and won them all.

"He (Durazzo) is having his first start at Launceston.”

"I said to Denise I thought this colt was a nicer colt than Durazzo," Howard said.

"So if Durazzo has ability, hopefully he has better ability."

The second top seller of the day, Lot 109, the Grunt filly from Shemakhan, was snapped up by McEvoy Mitchell Racing and Belmont Bloodstock.

Co-trainer Tony McEvoy, who puts the polish on Grunts' pinup runner to date Veight, said the filly was only the second Grunt he'd purchased since Veight emerged.

"She's a very nice filly," McEvoy said.

"I bought one (Grunt filly) last year and now this filly - I've seen them all of course - and those two are the only ones who passed the criteria like he (Veight) did.

"We were underbidder on Lot 5 who I thought was the best colt in the sale and the Grunt was the best filly. I'm very pleased to be taking her home."

Across the day, $2,767,500 was traded on 90 lots sold at an average price of $30,750 and clearance rate of 70 per cent.

"It was a tough sale," Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch said.

"We've been thinking the lower end of the market might come

back a cog or two in recent times and I think it did.

"In most cases vendors were willing to meet the market but unfortunately there wasn't a willingness to participate on all horses, so a clearance rate of just 70 per cent is disappointing. "The average has come back a little bit more than I would have anticipated but what I will say when a good horse walked into the ring, and it's like that at any sale, there was strong participation for quality."

“Tasmania is slightly down on its spend from last year, but I just think we've got to work with TasBreeders, Tasracing and look at what we're doing to ensure we give ourselves the best opportunity to ensure this sale is viable into the future.

"There has been a lot more value to be found at the earlier sales this year, so from the perspective of the interstate buyer or the trader, they're probably filling their orders earlier, so there's not as much need to go to every sale"

"I think the TasBred scheme is quite good and the racing indus-

try down here is moving ahead and I would have thought we'd have had a good thirst from the local market to participate here.

"I am disappointed in what the local market was, but they've bought six more horses than last year at this point but it's just that they've spent a fair bit less on buying those horses.”

The Magic Millions focus switches to back to back auctions on the Gold Coast and in Adelaide this month.

"The Gold Coast March Yearling Sale is the best incentive sale in Australia,"Bowditch said of the auction set to be held on March 11 and 12.

"Queensland bred stallions such as Better Than Ready and Spirit of Boom are matching it with the best sires in the country."

The club operates out of the Murwillumbah Showgrounds and offers great facilities, stables, camping, canteen, new dressage arenas, jumping and sporting equipment, qualified instructors and friendly helpful members. New members are welcome to join the club and join in the fun but riders from any club are welcome to come along. Nominations are essential to attend the amp.

ITCH, SWEET ITCH, SUMMER ECZEMA and EQUINE ALLERGIC DERMATITIS are names for distressing skin conditions which affects horses in spring and summer months throughout Australia and around the world.

The usual cause is a hypersensitivity to the bites of flies (in particular sand flies or midges).

While the bite of the flies are an irritation, some horses develop sensitivity to the bite and will rub themselves so much that they cause injury to their skin.

Research shows the cause is an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the saliva of the midges (as with humans).

Not only that, but once or twice a day, stable lies come to the horse, feed vigorously for a minute or two, and then return to the shade to digest their food. These bites can cause intense irritation in some horses. The bites appear as small raised lumps with a central scab.

The effects on the horses can be dramatic. They suffer intense pruritus (itchiness) on the mane, tail, face, ears and back, resulting in biting, rubbing, hair loss, self-trauma and a change of temperament. They become miserable and irritable.

KURITCH has been specially formulated to help assist this problem effectively, in a number of ways:

Firstly, it repels the biting insects using the combination of the natural repellent “Citronella Oil” and a highly effective repellent “DEET”. Secondly, it soothes the irritated areas thus relieving the horse from biting and rubbing, which in turn allows the normal healing process to begin.

Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies.
